“Appears That Not Many Guys Know What The Hell Is Going On”

September 20th, 2014

Falconsrun

A former glory days Buccaneer joins a longtime NFL personnel man in being completely stunned by the ineptitude and poor technical play of the Buccaneers defense.

Earlier today, longtime scout Chris Landry emerged from his film room and revealed how aghast he is by the Bucs’ “awful” run fits and coaching that isn’t sinking in.

Former Buccaneers defensive end Steve White (1996-2001), a coaching intern this spring on Lovie Smith’s staff, was every bit as biting in his critique. White shared all kinds of stuff on his Twitter account. Here are a couple of nuggets:

You can click through above to read a lot more via White’s Twitter feed. He, like Landry, was shaking his head at Johnthan Banks.

Joe’s speechless. Yes, it is this bad. White knows exactly what the defense is supposed to look like, but he’s seeing almost the opposite.

White made it clear that he’s not talking about talent level, just guys being in the right places and — to use his words — knowing “what the hell is going on.”

Joe’s off to the liquor store. Anyone need anything?

Joe’s buying? I’ll take one of everything.

  3. meh Says:

I’m worried about Joe’s liver. Will it last the whole season?

  4. FLBoyInDallas Says:

This is what you get when you change schemes (ie coaching staffs) every other damn year. A bunch of players who are confused and afraid to pull the trigger for fear of making a mistake. Folks, the Bucs have descended to the level of the Factory of Sadness…coaching change after coaching change, scheme after scheme, huge turnover in players and none of them knowing what the hell they’re supposed to do. This is what rock bottom looks like.

  5. darin Says:

No thanks Joe that teams had me in and out of AA more times than I can remember.

  6. phreakybucfan Says:

Liquor store is empty. I drank it all at half-time. My bad.

  7. MGM4Life Says:

Who the hell knows, this whole thing blows, hanging on every word of joes, tune in Sunday for a sad, sad show, getting treated like filthy ho’s, half the players should be working at loews, remember when we were a fearsome foe,
now we are confused and slow, 2003 was our high now the low is all we know.

  8. Tackleblockwin Says:

This was obvious on a few plays watching from live broadcast. Sometimes I wish I could watch the game from birds eye view. But a few plays Thursday the pass coverage was so pathetic it was mind boggling. I remember one play where a Falcon WR stopped his route and just stood waiting for a few seconds for a pass. There were three Buc defenders next to him and not one of them inched closer to cover him…lol. I didn’t see any other WRs in the area. Then Ryan completes a pass to this guy and I was blown away. Looked all 3 Buc defenders in coverage was looking at Ryan, not even noticing the WR standing there between them. It was if he was invisible to them…lol.

  9. BFFL Says:

Nice job MGM4Life…thanks for the laugh.

  10. Ed Kerber Says:

    It’s a Sucs life!

  11. Soggy Says:

    @MGM4Life , Nice..

  12. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Let’s be honest here. We KNEW from preseason that the backups sucked out loud.

Really, with so many starters injured, what did anyone expect?

  13. Soggy Says:

I was so mad looking at newtons gang laughing and joking at our players in game one, Now I know they were being kind..

  14. OB Says:

    Joe

It doesn’t matter who the coaches are as to where they should play, you always fill the holes and play your position. If you are a DB you cover the position or the person.

Offensively, you block away from the hole or you block for a pocket, you run to daylight and you pass to YOUR team mate when he is open.

If the punt returner is dangerous, you punt it out of bounds.

Not brain surgery here but if you QB is doing bad continually, you pull him, if your back keeps fumbling, you pull him, if your receiver can’t or won’t catch, you pull him.If you running play is stuffed all the time, you pass.

There are plenty of practice squad players on various team that we should try out and release some of our dummies. If VJax cano’t or won’t catch, get Sheppard from, I believe, Jacksonvilles practice squad and so on.

If our head coach says that McCown is still his starter after the first three debacles, see if he is in early dementia or drinking on the job because he is seeing something the world is not.

Find out who and what they are telling LVD because he is not where he was last year.

Now we either have a bunch of stupid players or they are playing this way on purpose.

  15. RichBucsfan Says:

Banks was lost in the Rams game. He hasn’t got a clue what he’s doing. He is slow and dumb.

  16. stratobuc Says:

Is it hockey season yet? It can’t get here fast enough. Go Lightning!

  17. SteveK Says:

Looking forward to your 9am announcement tomorrow, Joe.

  18. trox Says:

I totally agree with these opinions. The back 7 has been horrendous either in man or zone. The LBs routinely get sucked to the line of scrimmage on play action and allow easy throws over their heads. Both safeties have shown they can’t cover TEs in man coverage. The pass rush hasn’t been great, but the back 7 looks totally lost.

  19. RastaMon Says:

“White made it clear that he’s not talking about talent level, just guys being in the right places and — to use his words — knowing “what the hell is going on.”

    That would be COACHING….

  20. Lee Encinosa Says:

Is it any wonder that most NFL players know what’s going on? They’ve been pampered all the way thru high school and college just because they’re great athletes not road scholars. In other words, most of these guys are as dumb as a box of rocks.

  21. Soggy Says:

@Lee Encinosa, lol.. Jackie Gleason used to say: SHARP AS A BOWLING BALL..

  22. oldfart44 Says:

FLBoyinDallas. Finally, someone who makes sense. Sir, you are absolutely right with your cogent remarks. It’s going to take time. Secondly, the turkey shoot on Thursday is better in mind than losing 19-18. If you are an athlete or a coach you may have suffered through one of these disasters. It should not leave a scar, but hopefully motivate EVERYONE to be ready for the Steelers. For you Glennon lovers, we shall see what happens. Be patient. By the way for those of you in the media and fandom who dumped all over the first two team QBs, unfortunately, some teams and subs play well. Do you really expect them to roll over and die?

  23. Tackleblockwin Says:

Yes Joe, here is my list

One 12 pack of Defenders Stout
    One bottle of Quarterback Smooth
One case of Injury Free potions
And a issue of Basic Football Strategy “football for dummies” addition.

Going by this way of thinking, we should still have Raheem Morris here. lol
It’s Rock Bottom because no decent coach will coach for the Glazers, plain & simple.

  25. Tony Says:

I’m not buying the coaching change excuse….And Reid didn’t seem to have a problem in Kansas City last year. Team are never embarrassed to LIKE. As a matter of fact, I’ve never seen an NFL game and just barely a college and high school game like THAT. It looked like a different game the Falcons were playing. Makes you wonder just how bad we really were our first two games but our opponents sucked that much. The offense, and McCown, I’m giving a pass to because of the who offensive coordinator not being there. The defense is as awful as I have ever seen. What a joke.

  26. jb Says:

    ^^^
This! Tony’s spot on. But who keeps hiring these ZEROS? The Glazers.

  27. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

Was McCoy and Mason Foster the missing link????

  28. WalkdaPlank Says:

    @Tony

Agree with everything except a pass to McCown and the offense. Scheme-wise, yes that highly affects the offense. But Tedford being there isn’t going to get Vjax and Mike Evans to catch better, nor is it going to stop McClown from making dumb decisions and throwing the ball to the other team, something he has done in every game this season. I also doubt it will get the O-line to block better.

  29. Soggy Says:

Just because we are in rebuild mode does not mean we have to be the worst, the laughing stock, the big dildo’s of the NFL.. How about we kick it back to hester and show the nfl how smart we are..

  30. Soggy Says:

    Oh we already did that, bonus on prime time, Nice move exlax [lovie}

  31. Brent Says:

Agree Tony. I don’t wanna jump the gun but this Frazier hasn’t done his job so far. To the point of being embarrassing and remarkably bad. They’ll probably get better but new scheme doesn’t explain these performances.. Bad coaching. Unless things change drastically soon Frazier should go. Let lovjie handle defense.

  32. 77 bassguitarist Says:

Being that i don’t like it seemed to do the trick…lol

  33. 77 bassguitarist Says:

I don’t drink Joe but I did try patron once being that I don’t like to fly it seemed to do the trick I was nice and calm before I boarded the plane ….lol…typo in the above thread

  34. sam Says:

Johnthan Banks, or how ever the hell you spell his name, is garbage absolute trash. Now I see why lovie was so hell bet on playing mike Jenkins, atleast Jenkins actually stayed ON HIS FREAKING MAN!!

  35. Tye Says:

Andy Reid took over the Chiefs which were the worst team the year before and coached them up to play winning ball last year.

A college coach has done the same for the Texans this year who were the worst last year.

Newly hired from college HC have their team winning already (see the Bills, Browns, Texans)

If they with no NFL head coaching experience can do it with those teams then an NFL experienced HC should do it as well or better BUT he isn’t…… So it is on Lovie and he is failing historicly!

  36. sam Says:

Joe, did you or any other member of the press happen too ask lovie why he continued too kick it too Hester?! That should’ve have been the first question you asked him, he of all people should know how dangerous Hester is! UGh, its only week 3 and watching the bucs has already made me sick of football.

  37. Kris McCarthy Says:

So I fly from Canada spend a sh*t load of money and watched the Sunday game and was in Atlanta well tell the end of the 1 st quarter ended up giving my Jackson jersey to a kid. Embarrassed big time are defense looked highschool are offense what offense josh at Qb no thank you Iam not apart of the glennon mob but sh*t. Iam gonna send all my receipts to buccaneers hahahaha

  38. Bucnjim Says:

It cracks me up when fans are screaming to be patient until they learn the defense. This defense has been around for 20 years or more and most of these guys have played it in some form since JR High School. Cover 2 is nothing more than a specific type of zone coverage which every team everywhere runs at one time or another. The problem with this system is it requires both good players as well as disciplined players. We may have some good players, but discipline is lacking on both sides of the ball.

  39. MadMax ™ Says:

You said it Bucnjim….when it all boils down to it, its straight up football talent per player and coaching talent per play call. And when ALL are just siphoning from the cash machine while they couldnt care less whats going on, then whats left to do as a fan? Laugh and shake your head and try to look forward to the next season.

These Glazer guys got me on their pump and dump zapata stock back in the 90’s and cost me a couple hundred while getting my feet wet with stock trading…..well, they’re not getting me here with this product….Im not buying into this inept mess….not one penny will they make from me!

  40. JBuc Says:

DBrooks preached patience and that this defense would take time for these players to learn. But why take his word for it?

JBuc, Exactly how much are you spending on your Season Tickets, and how long have you had ’em?

    That’s what I thought! lol

  42. JBuc Says:

Hey JB, been a fan since 76 and had season tickets for ten years prior to having two daughters. Thought about getting them again a few years back once they were old enough to follow the game. Then I remembered they’d likely be sitting next to a-holes like you for 8 games a year and I thought better of it. I still come out to 4 to 5 games a year so what’s your point?
