Will The Cover-2 Work?
August 8th, 2014No, the Bucs don’t run a Cover-2 defense all the time. But it very much is key component into Lovie Smith’s defense. As Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks have said since Lovie was hired, it’s not a defense that can be picked up overnight.
Joe knows Bucs fans both near Tampa and far from the Tampa Bay area would love to see a return to when the Bucs punished opponents on a weekly basis like the old days.
In this TBO.com video, TBO’s Olivia Stacey and Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune discuss what needs to happen for the Bucs to be successful defensively (and offensively) and that begins tonight.

I’m honestly more concerned about our defense than our offense. I feel like any good QB knows how to pick apart the Tampa-2 and find the holes in the zone at this point. I hope we get a consistently strong pass rush and that our guys can gel quickly or we are going to be relying heavily on our offense for victories. Thankfully, we have as much talent on offense as virtually any team in the league and I see us averaging around 30 points per game.

Let’s all raise a glass in hopes that the Tampa-2 will finally come back to Tampa.

If the Bucs offense averages 30 points a game this season I will be fully flabbergasted.

@Buc the Haters
Not really a Tampa 2, has some of Lovie’s own elements in it. It was doing well two seasons ago so I expect it should do well this season.

This is a poor question. All forms of defense and offense can work depending on the talent and execution. The question should read “will it work based on the talent and coaches we have?”

Luckily we have four games before our defense faces drew brees. Hopefully the defense will gel somewhat by that point.

Hopefully our defense will star to gel before we face Drew Brees and The Saints in week 5. In new Orleans…ouch.

Cover 2 is no miracle D, but it is a good way to slow down this pass happy NFL. When used the right way the cover 2 can take away the outside as well as the deep ball. This does leave the middle run and middle pass susceptible to good QB’s. This is why a good middle LB is usually a must. The cover 2 also tries to direct plays into a certain area where LB’s like Brook’s & LD are waiting to make the tackle.
