“Things Around The Building”
August 14th, 2014“The ball is the program.”
Damn, Joe heard Greg Schiano say that repeatedly. The man was obsessed with protecting the football and generating turnovers. Consider not a single Tampa Bay wide receiver caught a ball and fumbled it in 2012.
But Gerald McCoy says Lovie Smith is in another league when it comes to forcing turnovers.
McCoy was asked about Lovie’s emphasis on that after practice today. And No. 93 acknowledged his teammates were excellent at takeaways last season (third best in the NFL) but Lovie is more focused than Schiano or any other coach he’s worked under.
“We do some things around the building that helps us to remember to take the ball away. He’s emphasizing it all day at practice. We do drills for it. Everything is about taking the ball away,” McCoy said. “We want to score touchdowns on defense, too. It’s not just about the offense”
McCoy was pressed to reveal what these “things around the building” are that Lovie employs. McCoy wasn’t biting.
“Just some stuff, some stuff. That’s why I said it’s in the building. It’s going to stay in the building,” he said.
It all sounds great. Joe just hopes the Bucs can snatch some footballs from opponents. This defense, as it did Friday, gets its hands on a lot of balls, but hasn’t secured a great percentage yet.

lol “some stuff” – let me guess they’re trying to strip the ball from runner in practice. you honestly think love invented some new practice method to improve turnover efficiency? you and i know thats complete bullshit… lol.

I love the third person references. Jaycee thinks that Joe is mocking the pro athletes who talk about themselves in the third person. Is Jaycee correct?

Joe said “snatch”!!!!!!! LOL

They may not get them all but it does increase their percentage of takeaways by concentrating on creating more separations. This has always been known, and all coaches agree, it’s just that Lovie seems to emphasize it in every passing conversation. He won’t let them forget. He makes them think about it all the time. He probably even has some game going on around the palace that they all are playing, and that’s what Geraldini is referring too when he said, “things around the building” .

I’ve noticed in the footage I’ve seen online that every time someone has the ball, the defenders are coming in trying to rip the ball out. I would expect a lot of turnovers in our favor. Of course the downside is we may either miss more tackles, or the runner might drag our defender for a few extra yards as a result. I can live with that if the fumbles pile up.

I can imagine a lot of missed tackles if they focus on the ball rather than wrapping up!

No mention of signing Larry English? I mean, its not a big deal, but he was signed.

You guys have got too see the big picture here.If the Bucs win 5 games this year but the defense shines and shows what it will be next season. Then that’s great along with the offense showing what it will morph into with the number 1 or 2 pick next, then i’m good. Pick a qb in the first round, offensive lineman in the second, edge rusher in the third, lineman in the fourth. Develop that qb behind Josh behind a nice o-line, great weapons and awesome D, GREAT. New Orleans will be old at qb (window shut), Matty Ice ceiling reached with old and broken down receivers. Carolina will start to find its stride again but depend on their D to keep things close. The Bucs own the division for the next four years.

@Newbucsfan!!!: im all in sound good
But: “you play, to win, the game” . “you play to win the game!”
And they wont be in position to win anything if they keep giving away servicable players like presents and keep having horrible draft plans
They could make some noise next seasons, quite possible, but so far they couldn´t didly di poo

I have an idea hire Shawn king @ guard and bring in Incognito to run off Meredith and Cousins.

You talk like last year’s defense didn’t get turnovers because it did so lovie is still inheriting a really good defensive players, no one remembers Greg schiano s first preseason game, no one thought they’ve have #1 run defense.

Same thing every year no matter what. LOL
