Today’s Bucs-Pats trade sending Logan Mankins to the Bucs is a stunner in Boston
There is no dancing this afternoon in Copley Square, no celebrating at the Cape. Patriots Nation is stunned by the trade of Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins to the Buccaneers for Tim Wright and a fourth-round draft pick.
NESN.com Pats beat writer Doug Kyed pulls no punches in his report.
The Patriots are never short on surprises, but this move is among their most shocking in recent memory. Mankins’ skills had appeared to be declining after he played through a torn ACL in 2011, but he still was one of the Patriots’ top offensive linemen. With long-time offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia gone, as well as Mankins, the Patriots’ offensive line might not be as consistent as they have been in Tom Brady’s tenure under center.
Yes, you read that correctly. Mankins, 32, played through an ACL tear in 2011. What a warrior!
He may not be what he was, but the guy started 16 games last year and made the Pro Bowl.
And Patriots fans are stunned. Joe’s been enjoying some sports radio in Boston this afternoon. Wow!

I’m excited…but we haven’t had the best of luck trading with the Pats and Mankins is getting up there in age, so I’m skeptical.

This is a great trade for both parties. We’re hurting at guard, they’re hurting at TE. Sefarian-Jenkins is going to be a BEAST so I’m not worried about our TE situation.

football is a business guys, some of you just don’t get it. we got fleeced. lost a 4th and a promising TE, arguably our best player last year. and it cost us 10 mill when incognito could have done the job for pennies on the dollar. WTF is all I can say.
let’s hope he will teach the young guys, but what motivation does he have to do that. he teaches them and they get good he gets released next year.

Pablo….they traded for another guard to compete for the right side. Mankins solidifies one side of the line and will leave Evan Dietrich-Smith to give support on the right side……it makes the whole line better to put it layman’sterms

Robert: the reports say the cap hit this year is a shade under 7 mill while the next 2 years are a shade over 7 mill. Who’s to say he isn’t open to restructure.

Patriots are absolutely freeing up money to go WR shopping (Andre Johnson perhaps?). Mankins is better than what was starting on the Bucs, but let’s be real he’s getting older and has a big salary. I understand the desperation, but I think the Pats fleeced Licht by getting a productive young player who has room for improvement plus a 4th round pick when you figure we could have kept Zuttah for less money (and the 5th round pick was already traded away this year for another 4th round this year)

@robert9 yeah his cap hit is 10 million but we only pay 5.5 million of that this year. And 6.25 next year. The pats are on the hook for the remaining 4 million because it was salary cap money. And a 4th rounder and a back up tight end for a 6x pro bowler yeah that’s horrible. Cause we would have got the best guard to play the game in the 4th round. Some of you just like to complain are team just got better today and you are worrying about losing a 4th rd pick. WOW

At the end of the 2014 season, Mankins will have completed a full decade in a Patriots uniform, becoming as synonymous with New England’s run of success as any player not named Tom Brady. And for good reason, as the left guard has earned a trip to the Pro Bowl following each of the past five seasons, a testament to the fact that he’s always the consistently good element in the trenches for Bill Belichick and Company.
In this article he was rated the number 3 interior lineman in the game. So he’s not over the hill stop the complaining

Wright was promising, make no mistake, after one year of play.
But, so, was Michael Clayton after one season. Mankins is a KNOWN quantity.
The team felt TE was a position of depth. I was zero qualms with the trade.

Had the plan been to cut Wright then yes you are correct. Why they would have cut a guy who had as productive a rookie campaign as Wright did and had such a small salary does seen unlikely though? As I said I understand the desperation on the Bucs part, they probably realized in hindsight that they should have kept either Joseph or Zuttah and did what they had to in order to have a chance at keeping any QB alive. I just think they paid a lot for a guy who is on the decline (yet sadly still far better than the other starting guards the Bucs were using)

Yes, if Mankins’ makes another pro bowl this year and Wright is as productive at TE as Aaron Hernandez was last year, I’ll be damn ecstatic that ‘Tampa’ got over on ‘New England’ and specifically Boston!

I’m a Bucs fan living in NE and I can tell you that Mankins is a fan favorite up here. They have no clue who Tim Wright is. Typical NE fans only know their own players. I guarantee you Beltichick has big plans to use Wright to fill that 2 TE scheme.

This is even more impressive – I remember him playing through the injury and this was after he signed his deal.
This is nothing short of brilliant! Guards that are lucky and keep themselves in great fitness/football shape can play into mid to late 30s.
I think we should be able to get 3 solid years from him.

I can’t help wonder if NE was holding out wanting a higher round draft pick (than just a 4th RD) from the Bucs in this deal until Incognito showed up at One Buc for interviews. If this deal was indeed in the works for close to a month, the timing of the announcement is interesting. I’m sure Incognito was brought to Tampa to either make NE crap or get off the pot OR help the Bucs determine if the offer on the table for Mankins was something they should pull the trigger on. Either way, Incognito probably got played here.

I see this trade as a win-win for all parties involved. The Bucs get some much needed help on the offensive line with a proven NFL player and the Pats get another receiver for Tom Brady. Wright seemed like he was going to be the odd man out since the Bucs are deep at tight end and he is a poor blocker. Austin Sefarian Jenkins is a second round draft pick that is definitely going to get his chance to show what he can do at the TE spot and has a much higher ceiling than the, WR turned TE, Tim Wright.

I am confused by this trade. I love that we got a very good guard. But doesn’t Wright have the potential to be a very good TE. A 4th rd pick by itself should draw pretty good trade interest for a veteran 32yo guard. But, because of the gutting of the Oline, we were desperate. Hence the consideration of Joe’s hated buddy Incognito. Even though I am excited we have a big upgrade at G, I am not sure this is a good deal for us, but as I said, we are desperate.

I am shocked that there are clowns out there who don’t like tthis trade! I have been critical of L & L for plenty of the offseason moves – specifically the Mike Williams and Zuttah trades where we got robbed and the total misevaluation of the “talent” that they brought in to play on the O-line.
We were deep at only two positions – RB and TE. (If u think we have talented 2’s on defense, you’re deluding yourself.) We traded a position of strength for a desparate need. I assume the Pats did the same thing. It’s a win-win. This is a no-brainer trade for us. Jeez, Wright was running with the 3rd team. We got a Pro Bowler

It was a great trade for us. We got The Pats in a moment of dire need.
They needed both a Hback/TE, and a Wr . Brady needs weapons.
And they were Money Tight.
They gave up someone they didn’t want- but addressed all 3 issues.
For us- we got be of the top 3 guards in the League.
Let that set in! Yeeesss!
Wright is to little to block effectively. Lovie wants TEs that can block. The Pats let Gronk block- wright can float.
Scheme wise- wright is a great fit there, an Ok fit here. I wish him luck.

@Harry – dude was on his way out. They’re not going to Draft asj, sign Myers in the off season as part of their initial big roster turnover and keep Wright. Stocker will be their blocker if he can stay on the field and the other two do everything that Wright did.

He’s only $6 mil a season, just what we were paying our other OGs, the Pats are on the hook for $4 mil a season in dead money for the next two seasons as that was part of his prorated $20 million signing bonus money…please learn and understand how NFL contracts work when it comes to money and guarantees and bonuses before you start whining about the Bucs being on the hook for $10 mil a season for a guard. Our cap hit is just the $6 mil a season,
