Larry English Puts Da’Quan Bowers On Notice
August 23rd, 2014You know what jumped out at Joe more than anything in today’s Bucs win over the bungling Bills? There was actually a pass rush!
Oh, of course, Gerald McCoy was bursting through the line like he always does, as if shot out of a cannon. But of the five sacks today, none came from GMC. Imagine if the Bucs can continue to get heat from others who don’t wear the No. 93?
One of those guys was a newbie by the name of Larry English. Even though he is new to the Bucs, he’s not new to the NFL. English, a former first round pick of the Chargers in 2009, was released by the Chargers just before training camp.
Today, he had to make Bucs defensive lineman Da’Quan Bowers a bit nervous. Yes, it was only preseason, but English had two sacks. Bowers has a total of 5.5 sacks … in three years!
Bowers, who is hurt again, is easily on the bubble. He is now on his third coach and second front office and neither general manager Jason Licht nor coach Lovie Smith have any ties to him.
The way English played today, Joe has a hunch Bowers may be playing guitar in a gospel troupe coming to a church near you very soon.

Bowers = toast

I’d rather him stay and back up GMC which means no snaps but I haven’t seen anyone rushing at 3 technique better as a backup. Keep him atleast this year while someone else emerges but the end positions are set already and he’s not one of them

I thought Bowers was a tackle now…
Liked the white uniforms better than the red…

Sorry to see how Bower’s NFL time seems to be riddled with injuries and sub par play. Perhaps a trade for additional o line help should be a consideration. Too bad…. he does seem like a likable guy…..

English is a threat to Mean, Gholston, and Clayborne. Bowers dt looks safe.

Yes. But Talley has gotten plenty of second team DT time. I bet none of the fourth tackle candidates are on the roster past next week. Someone will get picked up on waivers.

I’m a bass guitarist we could use him at our church lol

Cheeseburger Bowers is done. Sad that a guy with so much God given potential did not take advantage of it. No, I do not believe he just had bad luck. I think he had such little desire that he was NEVER in shape and that is the reason he is always getting hurt. I know AC has never matched the level for where he was drafted, but at least he gives his all. Maybe this will be his year. He played good tonight. Cheeseburger, your done.

I hope English works out well for the Bucs. He could be the real 2009 1st round draft pick we never had……..

When the first team left, the pass rush was sub par vs the Bills and Dolphins. Only when Gholston, Means, and Bowers was in the field did the 2nd pass rush looked pretty good vs the Jags.
Again English is only a threat to the DE. No one beside Spence have done anything at the DT on the 2nd team consistently. It showed on film how the opponent just marched down the field like it nothing. Especially, when McCoy sit out a play or two.
Personally, I would add English with Gholston, Means and Bowers for the 2nd strings or let Gholston start over Clayborn. Then Clayborn can be a DT with Bowers.

I wanted Larry English in 2009. Kind of ironic.

Means has to stay healthy. Clayborn will start at DE.

We can use Means and English on Special Teams. Put both on team along with Claiborne and Gholston because whichever is a starter at DE the other can play inside if needed. Put Bowers on IR. Problem solved.

I said earlier that English was Bower’s swan song.

Happy, happy, happy we got Larry English.
Natural 4-3 DE. Square peg in a round hole in SD. I was hoping he’d slip to the second round that draft year so we’d get him. Perhaps new life? If Gholston gets healthy and English stays on point, I can get over our potential bust of a DE in Johnson.

Bowers is a much player than English. Too bad he can’t stay healty. Give me Bowers and Gholston over any other defensive linemen that we have on the roster other than the 4 starters.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I still haven’t seen clayborne rush up the field, it’s been a stunt like 90% of the time. He keeps rushing inside the tackle. What’s up with that?
August 24th, 2014 at 1:28 pm
Perhaps that is the best way he can get results?

Oddly enough when English got his first sack he was unblocked it almost seemed like the oline was expecting the inside rush.
