Mike Glennon has a starter’s mentality
Bucs fans loved Mike Glennon’s absolute bomb to Chris Owusu last night for a touchdown. They also cringed when Glennon coughed up the football needlessly.
But that’s how practice goes sometimes, and Glennon’s not pressing. He’s got a starter’s mentality.
Glennon spoke to media last night about how the addition of Josh McCown “hasn’t changed my mindset at all” and he explained that he’s still competing every day and will see “how it plays out.”
Joe likes the attitude from the Bucs’ backup, but Glennon is not competing. It’s McCown’s job; journeyman Josh is getting every first-team rep in practice, and he’s looked better than Glennon to date.
But things change fast in the NFL when you’re a 35-year-old QB. Vincent Jackson said earlier this week that Glennon did a phenomenal job in a terribly difficult situation last year and that the Buccaneers would be very confident in him if he every became the starter again.
The Mike Glennon Mob is feeling uplifted this morning.

This is a great place for Glennon to be….having some time to develop and having a selfless mentor to help.
I believe that Glennon is very talented and extremely smart…..sure he lacks some mobility….but there is a guy out at Denver that does also. Not saying he can become Manning….but he can be a lot better than he was as a rookie….and that wasn’t too bad.
I’m not in the MGM….but like most fans, I root for all Bucs to reach their greatest potential and help our team win!!!

With the O-line not being a strength, the BUCS will be in big trouble if ‘cement shoes’ becomes the starter. Glennon is fine for the short-ball but he has NOT shown the ability to extend plays and complete the long passes. They will become the dinkaneers rather than the dunkaneers

First of all, Joe, it’s McCown’s job to lose. *IF* Lovie believes, after preseason, that the team has a MUCH, MUCH better chance with Glennon, then Glennon will start. Not that I believe McCown is better than Glennon (or vise-versa), butstarting Glennon over McCown would be dangerous.
Personally, I hope that McCown starts 16 games (at least). This would be better for everyone. Glennon can only get better with a mentor like McCown, therefore, the team gets better. (*I* believe Glennon has a very high ceiling)
McCown has experience that should not be underestimated.
The team looks up to him as a leader because he commands it.
He is used to going into new systems (5,6,7?) and therefore embraces it, rather than stepping in with caution and trepidation. This gives confidence to the other players about ‘buying into’ the new playbook.
I do not believe that McCown needs to look any better than average in order for Lovie to continue with him as the starter. Playing your ‘ace’ card too soon (Glennon), looks like desperation, and leaves you with no where to go if it isn’t good enough. With all the ‘puffing’ about ‘anything short of the playoffs is a failure’, this staff has to know that an 8-8 (or better) season will be seen by the fans and owners as “going in the right direction”.

Whichever QB is starting each individual game, this Glennon fan expects better play and more wins as the result. Go Bucs QB’s.

Glennon NOW has the right coaching staff to get him ready. McCown brings plenty of knowledge for “The Cannon.”
I’m looking forward to preseason where we will see the benefits of good coaching.
Glennon will start in 2016. That’s if we don’t draft a QB within the next 2 years. Either way he should be a great asset to this team.

Having a Josh McCown plus a 1 year of experienced Mike Glennon is far far better than having last year’s Josh Freeman plus a rookie Mike Glennon. Add to this a significant upgrade in coaching staff coupled with Barth’s return and exciting offseason of free agency/draft should lead this team to at least an 8-8 season with significant hopes for the future! Go Bucs!

P’cola Buc made a VERY good point. Very little has been made of Connor Barths’ return, but, this one change from last year, could make a huge impact on the success of this years’ team.

I just don’t see Old Man McCown playing the whole season, I have not seen Old Man McCown do one thing in a bucs jersey yet, and other than Joe say that He walks in the room like a leader,( whatever that means) I have not heard anything stupendous that he has done so far. I can’t wait to see the new bucs on the field very soon so I will be able to form my own opinion of what this team looks like.

I’m glad Glennon has a talented, experienced veteran to learn from…wish he had one last year. That being said, to think that McCown will still be the starting QB at the end of the season flies in the face of history. McCown has NEVER completed a 16 game season from start to finish, as the starting QB. I hope he does, this year, but my advice to MG8 is keep training young man, your chance may come before you know it!

Cannon is the reason all these corners are hurt! He keeps throwing short and into their ankles! I’ll give him credit, he took care of the gopher problem at One Buc!

There was a QB accuracy competition last night throwing at moving targets on the field at different depths and Glennon came in dead last while Kafka even came in ahead of Josh. Kafka also had a higher velocity throwing arm than Glennon as measured at their combines, is also as smart as Glennon, is athletic where Glennon isn’t, and is an experienced QB as is Glennon. Glennon also fumbled last night and has a gift for losing the ball without contact. Did that last year too. Glennon also rated last out of all NFL QBs when blitzed last year according to football focus.com. Kafka should be the backup QB for Josh and the future backup for the Franchise QB we move up and draft next draft. Trade Glennon this week and take the pick we get to pair with our first pick to move up with in the draft next year and get a real QB talent!!!

Yeah I’m not all too crazy about McCown being the guy to win us a division or even get a wild card for that matter. But I certainly do not think glennon is anything more than a quality back up who can protect the football and make few mistakes if he has to play. Our future qb isn’t in the Tampa bay bucs lockeroom. Sorry MGM fans

Wow! Tough Crowd!
Obviously the Jury hasn’t even convened, and we haven’t seen either QB in action this year. Based on what we do know, I am not at all concerned about our QB situation heading into the 2014 campaign. I do agree that Glennon is in a good situation right now backing up McCown, and will do nothing but benefit from McCown.

Hawk… barring an injury Glennon is riding the bench. Lovie also said mccown will get the first crack at starting game 1. real coaches don’t give away starting jobs like raheem and schiano. It’s good to prepare as the starter because anything can happen but this isn’t news because lol what else is the backup supposed to do, it’s his job to be ready. Yes a bench is the best place to learn how to be a quarterback but I don’t see some Aaron Rodgers type luck because he’s sitting and learning but at the same time I hope he’s the answer because drafting and waiting for another qb to develop is worse than Glennon starting

Glennon could be called upon sooner rather than later… But things could get interesting if say, McCown gets injured and Glennon performs just as well or better. Do you go back to the aging McCown or do they stick with “the QB of the future”?
All I know is it’s going to take one of these guys stepping up big time to give us a shot at the postseason.

I chuckled a little when Glennon was referring to McCown as a guy whose been around awhile and had as much success as he’s had 🙂 I’m as hopefully as any Buc fan that 2013 McCown is where Josh is at now, but I have to see it game day to believe it at this point in time.

I would love to see a pic of Glennon “losing the handle” opn the ball when he was rolling out. Brings back horrific memories of last year.

Considering McCown won 3 of 5 starts and Glennon won 3 of 13 starts, and the Bears defense was far worse than the Bucs.. II would say McCown accomplished quite a bit more than Glennon last season.

Um Brandon you may want to go back and look at last season, make that 4 wins not 3. Also a five game stretch with 3 victories is not only a very small sample to pin your future hopes on, but it’s really not all that impressive either. It’s not like the guy went 5-0 as the starter on a talented Bears offense let alone ever being a successful starting QB. If he holds on to the starting gig then more power to him and may he do something he never has in his long career…be successful

But what kind of ‘talent’ was McCown up against? Chicago played 5 games against teams who ended up with winning records. That’s five, f-i-v-e.
The Bucs played 9 (n-i-n-e) games against teams who ended up with winning records. The win% of Chicago’s opponents was .86%. The win % of the Bucs’s opponents was 1.35%.
Chicago played only 1 (one) team that made it as far as the Divisional Playoffs.
The Bucs played 3 of the 4 teams in the Conference Championships.
With that level of competition, it’s a wonder McCown didn’t win all five games.

this is the time of year where you practice everything, whether it’s a strength or weakness, new or familiar. if we call on glennon during the season, you have to hope tedford is intelligent enough to play to his strengths on sundays with the gameplan. i believe tedford can make glennon effective even if he’s forced into action before he is the complete sort of QB they want him to be.
