Cousins: Loss Was On Bucs’ Offensive Line
August 11th, 2014If there is one thing Joe has learned about professional athletes, it’s to go gentle immediately after a practice or a game (especially a loss). Generally, they are so worn out talking isn’t always what they want to do.
Hell, Joe was once cussed out by Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Gibson after the then-60-something threw batting practice (Gibson later apologized to Joe because he said he was having an asthma attack and couldn’t talk at the time he left the field because he couldn’t breathe).
It seemed Bucs guard Oneil Cousins was sort of in an angry mood after Sunday’s practice, and it wasn’t because there were a gaggle of reporters wanting to talk to him. Friday’s loss to Jacksonville was jarring in how the first team offensive line couldn’t block a cool breeze. Because of that, Cousins had a chip on his shoulder and he believed he and his linemates let the rest of their teammates down.
“The offensive line, we felt like that game was on us,” Cousins said. “I put it personally on myself.”
Cousins said the answer to the riddle of the offensive line lies in hard work and fundamentals, the latter he said the offensive line lacked Friday night.
“We have to continue to chop wood,” he said.

I must say, I agree with Mr. Cousins.

Maybe a chop block would be a better place to start than wood.

I agree that hard work is necessary….but it helps to have talent…I’m afraid we don’t stack up so well there…..

After watching the game again on the DVR, it seemed that the Jags new the snap count better than the O-line. McCown did not do too much to help either. He and Tedford take some blame for this. Then I reminder myself its only the first Pre-season game and to just relax. The Kool-aid is starting to wear off.

Nobody knows who those guys on the OL line are for teams like the colts and patriots. They just have a better system and coaching staff to put it all together. Of course having an above average QB that can get the ball out quick obviously helps.

Wasn’t “choppin wood” one of those dreadful Schianoisms?
Sheesh.

No, that was a Jack Del Rio -ism. He took it literally and had players take whacks at a block of wood. It was a great idea until his punter hit himself in the foot.

Cousins should feel like the loss was on him. I don’t believe he won a single pass-blocking down. He looked more like a swinging saloon door as he got beat to the inside just about every play. It will be a long year if we don’t bring in some serviceable guards.

Joe that is not even Oneil Cousins in your photo of an article about him. C’mon man! I see you do stuff like that many times. And when I look at twitter during practice you and Pewter Report often report about the same play happening but two different corners listed as the one getting beat. I’m starting to think they are the ones reporting the right one.

False alarm that is Oneil Cousins in the photo, but as far as my comment about twitter I see that a lot

I think when Tony Sparano backed out of the O-Line Job, Lovie’s desire to re-build the O-Line took a nose dive. When reading George Warhop’s extensive resume, I find some disturbing trends. I assume he brought along Cousins as both had been released from the Browns – the 4th time Warhop has been released from an NFL O-Line coaches job – even released mid-year from the 49ers.
I want to be careful not to cast unfair dispersions, but the trend is there in black and white! Hopefully, like Cousins, he can change that trend with the Bucs!

chop wood? more like cut the shit. in this case, cut this cant-block piece of crap off our football team.

I couldn’t even tell we had an offensive line!
Chop wood, chop house, chop suey, chop sticks, karate chop, pork chop, I don’t care what they chop……just friggin chop something!
Or as Arnie says …get to da chopper!

Man this guy sound like Donald Penn he want get better because he do not have the skill set to get better cut this clown at least with the young guys we expect some down plays!

@ Brandon: Then Schiano stole it from him, he was using the “choppin wood” deal at Rutgers and they too had an axe they kept around practice and even had it on the gameday sideline……

This guy is 3rd string at best, and a bottled water truck driver at worst.

Clearly the Bucs Offense didn’t play very well as a whole on Friday. BUT I will say I’m willing to let Lovie and his staff have the rest of pre-season to adjust and continue to make progress.
40+ new players and a whole new coaching staff takes some time compared to teams who have mostly returning players and staff from last year.
My expectations as a fan are still high but I am willing to give them a little slack on the first pre-season game. I’m hoping they give McCown at least 15 snaps against Miami this week. And maybe…just maybe our O-lone comes out pissed with something to prove.

Blunt:
That is Oneil Cousins, unless it is someone wearing an Oneil Cousins mask who is also wearing his jersey during practice.
As for Twitter, Joe can’t predict nor tell someone else what to Twitter any more than they can tell Joe what to Twitter. If a guy makes a play in practice or a game, Joe is supposed to check with someone 100 yards away what to Twitter? Really?
Maybe you might want to just shut Twitter off during practice? Not everyone who follows Joe follows the Pewter fellows, and vice-versa.
