Josh McCown offered a take on being a backup
Joe has spent plenty of time studying all things Josh McCown. And why not? He is the quarterback handpicked to lead the Bucs to the promised land, so of course Joe needs to know everything he can about the man.
In 2011, McCown was looking to get back into the NFL and signed on with San Francisco, where he essentially was post-lockout, training-camp meat for Jim Harbaugh. (That was before Lovie Smith cut McCown after the 2012 preseason.)
During his summer in San Francisco, McCown gave an extensive interview recorded by the Press Democrat. You can enjoy that here.
What stood out to Joe was a comment McCown made when asked about his 2010 season with the Hartford Colonials of the defunct United Football League. McCown made it clear that he believes quarterbacks can only develop when they get playing time.
Q: What was the UFL like?
McCOWN: It was a great experience. It was different. The competition was a lot better than people would have thought, and I had a good time. It was a chance for me to continue to play, and play games. I think I’m further along now than had I sat on a roster last year and been a backup, because I played eight games. I think you’re only getting better when you’re taking reps, and so I really valued that. That’s what my agent and I were looking at going into it – a chance to play, because I had sat there for two years behind Jake (Delhomme) in Carolina. I hadn’t gone that long [without] playing, being the starter or the backup. Being on IR that last year and sitting was frustrating, so you just want to get back out and play.
Joe finds it interesting that McCown, per his take above, believes Mike Glennon won’t get better sitting on the bench. Joe not sure that jibes with what Lovie Smith and Jason Licht believe about their “quarterback of the future.”
Yes, plenty of QBs have matured on the bench, including Aaron Rodgers, but there’s probably just as many who have rotted without playing time and/or stagnated holding a clipboard.
Joe has no idea how Glennon will respond to his demotion.

@WhiteTiger – Joe is not “worrying” about Glennon. There was no worry expressed here. Joe found it interesting that one of the NFL’s most traveled and experienced backups in league history doesn’t believe QBs get better on the bench. Why would Joe not share this interesting tidbit given the Bucs’ QB situation.

Glennon’s future almost entirely rests on his pre-season performance. He doesn’t have to win the starting job, but he does have to show he can play in the system under fire and perform well. ‘QB of the future’ doesn’t exist in the NFL. The future is always now. And if you’re not good enough to play QB now, the odds of you being good enough in the future are pretty small. Ask Josh McCown how lucky he is to be getting a second chance. Hell, even Blaine Gabbert got to start in his second season.

What Drew said. Kaepernick sat on the bench too. Wishful thinking that the bench will do for Glennon as it did for Kaepernick but you never know.

Glennon hasen’t been demoted until he’s a back up when the season starts. Gonna be funny as hell if he is named Starter before game 1. Will be a lot of back tracking to do for some.

Talking/texting with a trusted Bucs source a month or two ago, Joe would be very surprised if they washed their hands of Cannon based solely on this summer’s preseason. Besides, he, like McCown, are learning a new offense. There are bound to be hiccups.

Between the two of them, McCown and Glennon, we have at least one good QB. Right now a half a one apiece.

Understood, point being if that’s the only game tape he gets in 2014, and it’s not good – how much more tempting it is to take a QB in the 2015 draft? A bad showing may not doom him, but it might end his chances of being ‘the future’.

I think in 2 years Glennon will be given a shot. With his work ethics this can be proven to be a very valuable time for him to learn about our offense. On the other hand it will also give him plenty of looks to different defenses we will be facing. Not part of the MGM but I support him. I like McCown as our stater for now…

@joe – glad you caught that first line,buried as it was under my contempt for anything that looks like an argument crafted to illicit responses from the MG8 crowd…
Maybe McCown’s message was that the guy needs SO much work to even be considered as a legit NFL QB by any other team – he needs to play everyday (ala Brad Johnson – who also used an NFL-Europe starting gig to work on things like his release, his foot-speed, timing, arm-strength, etc.).

Having a dominant defense, great running game, great receivers and good coaching is what helps a QB develop.

Glennon is going to be the answer for the Bucs, one day.
Much to the dismay of the Freemanites, Glennon will only get better and prove more to be a franchise QB.

Jfro 6-pak started for 4 and 1/4 years and he never got better. everyone is different. As for MG8, I think it will do him good to sit back and take in what a professional ( that actually takes his job seriously ) does to prepare for gameday.
To Old Man McCown’s point. you rot on the bench when you have been a backup for the last 7 years. not for 1 year.

I agree with BFFL, look at Russel Wilson and Colin Kapernick, they’re both great because their defenses keeps them in games and they have a dominant run game.
With Lovie, I believe our Defense will be top 5, our run game will get better because of better blocking (Nicks is coming back, count on it) and defenses won’t be able to put 8 men in the box because of the Twin Towers (Jackson and Evans). Football can’t come soon enough!

Glennon was a third round draft pick. Not a first rounder. If he were a first round pick then I would say get him in there. Just like if we had drafted a QB this year with our first round pick, I would expect that rookie to start, but Glennon was a 3rd rounder, and should benefit from sitting and learning. If we had drafted say, JOE’S boy Manziel, I would be really pi$$ed off if they sat him. Glennon will get another shot and may surprise some after he’s had time to develop.

No, I believe Glennon will not rot on the bench and in fact believe after a very strong camp and preseason will give Bucs coaching a very difficult decision on who to name the starter come opening day. At least that’s what I saw in my crystal ball 🙂

You can very easily dispute this by looking at Josh in Chicago. He unquestionably got better sitting behind Cutler and learning from his coaches.

1. Playing in the UFL
2. Camp meat in an effort to get a paycheck
3. Cut by his now head coach in favor of Jason Campbell

He will if Joe and DaDog has anything to do with it. Bet it want be 7 minuets into the show after commercials and intro that it Glennon bashing time again at 5pm. Any takers? I see this article as a CYA attempt when Glennon either starts first game or takes over again very soon as he had to do for Freeman (Joe & dog’s man) last year. Joe nomater what you say you are on the record not wanting Glennon on our team.

I would say that Glennon will benefit more this year than any other year. He has a real coach and a true veteran to study under. Win Win situation for him.

I think in terms of Glennon improving it would be better if he played. No substitute for live action.
But for the team, better to start Josh as he gives us the best shot at winning now and contending IMO.
That theory will hold true unless were not in the mix, then they will do what everyone else does, start the younger guy and see what they got.

I believe that Glennon will continue to get better & better wherever he is. He’s got the work ethic, internal drive, & intelligence to do so… & it doesn’t seem like he cares about partying & pimpin girls like ‘he who shall not be named’

I agree with some of the comments in that I think we’ll see Glennon sooner as opposed to later. We’ve got a decent(I didn’t say good!) situation here with McCown/Glennon. McCown is servicable and Glennon can continue to hone his craft with a willing mentor. In the end, if neither pan out, we can always acquire the greatness that is Ryan Mallet!!! Or, will he rot too?!
There’s no substitute for game day experience.

I think rot is a strong word. That point in McCown’s career was quite different from where Glennon is now. I think time on the bench could do MG favors rather than harm

The “quarterback of the future” is not on the squad right now. IMO neither one of these quarterbacks is really that good. Everyone keeps saying that McCown is “good enough” to win some game, which may be the case, but it’s about winning championships. The Bucs need a true franchise QB to take them to the next level. The Bucs have been in existence for about 40 years and still have never had a really great QB.

A lot of NFL teams have never had a great QB, so the Bucs are not alone in that boat. Good ones sure, but great ones you can argue only about half the teams have had one of those (and then there a teams like the Packers who have had a few)

MG8 came from the same coaching tree as Russell Wilson 3rd rd pick and Matt Ryan 1st rd pick, Tom O’Brien and Dana Bible. Ok, let’s look at Wilson and Ryan’s rookie year starting offense coaches/players and see where they stood at the end of their first year. Wilson 11-5 with a div win and then lost to the Falcon’s… Ryan 11-5 with a wild card loss to the Cardinals (the year before 4-12 record Michael Vick’s dog fighting scandal and head coach Bobby Petrino’s abrupt resignation in 2007).
As I remember not even close to our pathetic group from play calls to protection to finish and scandal’s . So I think MG8 did not get a fair chance to shine like is college coaches two pervious studs. MG8 is a damn good coached player that got stuck on a SH*T team in 13 that is why I think L&L is keeping him in place weather he starts this year or next he IS the QB of the Bucs future!
