Endless Top-Whatever lists across the Internet got Joe thinking of the Buccaneers’ drought since their Super Bowl glory. Not a playoff victory since! And that motivated Joe to rank the 20 worst Buccaneers of the past 10 years.
Serious deliberations went into this at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters.
Beers bottles were thrown. Game film came out. Arguments ensued. Chants of Sabby from wild interns were quieted by Joe. There was even an all-night screaming session where a top intern stood on a table and repeatedly yelled, “Put the damn Rockstar on the list!!” Joe had to give the poor kid a Hooters Calendar just to distract him.
Primary consideration was given to expectations for a player combined with on-field performance. Off-field behavior was a factor, and players were not punished for injuries.
No. 14 — wide receiver Kevin Ogletree (2013)
Tampa Bay’s handpicked free agent receiver of 2013, the man the New Schiano Order tabbed from the Cowboys for the critical No. 3 wideout role last year, Kevin Ogletree, lasted only four games before being cut.
Ogletree couldn’t catch the ball. At times he made Michael Clayton look like Wes Welker. It was ironic that Ogletree got a fourth start in September, yet Greg Schiano benched Josh Freeman for “performance.”
A well spoken and super nice guy off the field, Ogletree was dreadful in a Bucs uniform. As is very common for the players on this dubious list, Ogletree, still only 26 years old, is now a man without a team.

I saw that 85 ant thought it was Maurice Stovall.. The 6’5 receiver who was apparently invisible in the red zone.. He of the 3 career TD’s.. And a high 3rd round pick.. Any chance he makes an appearance on the list?

Yeah, I thought it was stoval too… every year he was going to break out. I think this was another GM/coaching mistake. He couldn’t catch or be consitant when romo was throwing him the ball and other talented recievers around him… why did the garret brother and the rock star think he would be any good in tampa????

Fact checked myself.. Not a high third rounder but the 90th overall(still pretty high), especially considering Brandon Marshall was still on the board.. That hurts to type. And while I’m looking at that monstrosity of the 2006 draft, Alan Zemaitis HAS to make an appearance..

I don’t think he belongs on this list because he really wasn’t counted on to be much more than a competent slot/#3 receiver… He wasn’t really a high profile signing, so the fact that he ended up sucking is not a big deal.

Reejus Benn, Derrick Ward, Chris Simms, Quincy Black, Maurice Stovall and Josh Freeman.
Freeman had such ups and downs, and this past season was far worse for Free then I could’ve imagined. I was actually a little scared we were going to pay him after the 2012 season, and after the Jets game last year I knew he was done.

A guy who was undrafted out of college and signed by the Cowboys, who other than the first game of 2012 had a pretty poor year. The guy is signed by the Bucs to COMPETE for the 3rd receiver job in 2013 and is somehow worse than the No. 15 overall pick in the draft who turned out to be a straight up bust! The fact that Michael Clayton is listed behind these guys makes this list invalid.
No matter how hard you try (daily almost), you won’t discredit Joe’s list. Draft status with another team is irrelevant. Make no mistake, Ogletree was signed here to start, to improve the NFLs NINTH-ranked offense. He couldn’t catch the ball and was cut in October. Clayton’s first year had to considered in the overall picture. –Joe

Its obvious, Joes, that you see me frequent the comments section here that you can assume I enjoy the site. I do, so any differing comments I post don’t mean I do not respect what you do. I do. And appreciate it. I like the fact that you guys will engage the readers. With that said…
I just really can’t fathom Clayton not being in the top 5. I get that incredible rookie season that he had that helped the Bucs on that magical run to 5-11 that season. Then completely falling apart. The 1st round pick set the expectations very high. Then that rookie season raised the bar even higher. Then to just disappear like he did makes him, in my opinion, the Ryan Leaf of the recent Bucs organization. I’m not alone on this. So I won’t discredit your list, but you can’t discredit a very strong differing opinion. I’ll be back tomorrow.

Ogletree made the team on the strength of the recommendation of our new wide receivers coach, IIRC. I don’t see how this player merits so much scorn under Joe’s standards. Little production, true, but little invested.

If you were out of football 3-4 years after you were drafted (no second contract after your rookie contract) and you were one of the Bucs’ top draft choices in the first 3 rounds in the past 10 years and were expected to be a starter…chances are you’re on this list.

I think Brett Smith needs to be on this list for no other reason than while he was a Buc the ‘we have our franchise QB and his name is Brett Smith!’ Posse posted here more often, but that faction has since disappeared from JBF…riding off into the sunset with crushed hopes and heavy hearts. Damn that Smith guy for letting some Bucs fans down 🙂
