Pros And Cons: Mike Glennon
July 10th, 2014Though Joe likes to needle the numbers crunchers at Pro Football Focus as “nerds,” for trying to turn everything into a statistic, Joe must give them credit. They have done exhaustive work in a series breaking down quarterbacks to help fans get through the annual NFL summer siesta.
Now, Steve Palazzolo has offered detail analysis of Bucs backup quarterback Mike Glennon.
Before you start pounding your keyboard in rage at Joe, please note that Joe is simply offering findings by Palazzolo. Joe did not do the research. If you are outraged by any of the statistical gibberish, then please direct your venom at Palazzolo.
*On passes 11-30 yards downfield, Glennon was dreadful.
*On short passes and bombs, Glennon was pretty good; much better on short passes if not very good.
*Glennon got rattled too easily and opponents knew this. So Glennon’s struggles with pressure escalated because teams began throwing the kitchen sink at him with blitzes. It was an ugly downward cycle.
*When Glennon had time to set up deep in the pocket, he was one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL.
*Struggled with throwing passes to his left, something former Cowboys player personnel director Gil Brandt always harps on Glennon about.
*In a strange twist, Glennon’s main targets fueled the fire of both his detractors and supporters. Glennon’s detractors scream how he’s a checkdown artist. His supporters claim he was trapped in a dink-and-dunk offense. They’re both right. Glennon’s favorite targets were running backs in short passes (non screen passes), the most of any quarterback in the NFL.
Again, these findings belong to Pro Football Focus. So Mike Glennon Mob loyalists should please click the link above before cursing Joe and wearing their fingers raw on their keyboard.
To be honest, Joe is growing intrigued to see what Glennon could do with a different coaching staff in a different offense. No offense to Glennon, but Joe hopes Glennon is invisible during the regular season. If not, that means either starter Josh McCown is stinking the joint up or hurt.
July 10th, 2014 at 7:11 am
Or, that Glennon improved and is just better, and has more upside than Old-man McCown (career-backup).
Its funny joe, we read all the analysis of Glennon and it screams of bad o-line play. And Lovie saw the same thing and quickly scrapped the O-line as fast as he could.
July 10th, 2014 at 7:14 am
The best predictor of future performance is past performance, and since we have a very small sample of Glennon but an NFL clipboard carrying back-up career’s worth on McCown, I’m betting on McCown stinkin’ the place up by game 6, it’s his MO, nothing against him, but just go back and look at his career numbers, last season was either an anomaly and/or introduced a new offensive genius to the league in the form of Mark Trestman, or both, I’m betting both, an anomaly in McCown’s career and the introduction of a new offensive genius.
July 10th, 2014 at 7:14 am
Scariest thing about Glennon is how bad he got in December. League caught up to him and he got worse. Lovie saw it and hired the best starter he could find on the street.
July 10th, 2014 at 7:21 am
He was also a rookie thrown into a trainwreck with MRSA outbreaks and the ensuing Josh Freeman drama. It’s very easy to see why anyone wouldn’t set the league on fire. Rookie QBs never do and certainly not with the s—storm of last year.
Not saying he is the next tom Brady, I’m just saying give the kid a chance before you wrote him off.
July 10th, 2014 at 7:23 am
“Joe hopes Glennon is invisible during the regular season. If not, that means either starter Josh McCown is stinking the joint up or hurt.”
I’m cool with that. Love for Glennon to sit for a year and challenge McCown next year.
July 10th, 2014 at 7:25 am
I wonder if Pro Football Focus is going to break down McCown’s UFL season. Of course, they can’t really break down the season McCown didn’t even play due to being cut by Lovie in favor of Jason Campbell.
July 10th, 2014 at 7:28 am
Old man McCown can have success, he just needs to play the 5 bad teams he played last year over and over again.
July 10th, 2014 at 7:28 am
I posted this earlier on another topic but I feel it’s pertains to this also, MG8 came from the same coaching tree as Russell Wilson (3rd rd pick) and Matt Ryan (1st rd pick), Tom O’Brien and Dana Bible. Ok, let’s look at Wilson’s and Ryan’s rookie year’s starting offenses coaches/players and see where they stood at the end of their first year. Wilson 11-5 with a div win and then lost to the Falcon’s… Ryan 11-5 with a wild card loss to the Cardinals (the year before 4-12 record Michael Vick’s dog fighting scandal and head coach Bobby Petrino’s abrupt resignation in 2007).
As I remember not even close to our pathetic group from play calls to protection to finish and scandal’s . So I think MG8 did not get a fair chance to shine like is college coaches two pervious studs. MG8 is a damn good coached player that got stuck on a SH*T team in 13 that is why I think L&L is keeping him in place weather he starts this year or next he IS the QB of the Bucs future!
July 10th, 2014 at 7:39 am
It’s hard to believe Glennon being slower and less mobile than a 35 year old McCown, as past comments have suggested. Taller and younger should mean faster.
July 10th, 2014 at 7:42 am
Joe
You are doing a great job of keeping us entertained this summer, you only have 15 days to the camp starts.
Having said that, like some have said above, a QB has to have receivers and a line plus a game plan to show his true colors of throwing. One thing no one has touched on is how was he under fire, did he curl up or did he learn to get rid of the ball? Could we see those stats please if they exist?
July 10th, 2014 at 7:42 am
….bad Oline, bad coaching, bad schemes, not enough weapons,… yada, yada, yada. I don’t hate The Cannon, I just wish the MGM would be a little more realistic about MG8’s contribution to these piss poor numbers. He is a great backup QB.
July 10th, 2014 at 7:52 am
A rookie who was thrown into the fire on a dreadful offense.
Great locker room too. Underachieving, overpaid veterans and or malcontents playing for a totalitarian dictator and wallowing in a MRSA pit.
Such win.
July 10th, 2014 at 7:56 am
‘The Cannon’ is a good nickname for him… He does have a pretty strong arm, but also similar mobility to the cannon in the pic above. Unfortunately, all of those stats look to be accurate. I do believe Glennon can be a successful starter with an elite OLine & better overall scheme, but I don’t think anyone would say that we currently have that (the elite OL). McCown is the QB with the appropriate skillset for us to be successful immediately. Or, at least he gives us the best chance of anyone who is currently on our roster.
July 10th, 2014 at 8:12 am
You know what that breakdown says to me? Rookie! I would venture to say that if you looked at any QB in the league in their rookie year, the stats would be similar.
It’s nothing to be ashamed of, it’s something to build upon.
July 10th, 2014 at 8:13 am
As I see it, he was a QB thrown into a horrible situation psychologically and physically. Psychologically, he had a brain-dead mentor and a HC who believed that NFL QBs didn’t need to be coached. Physically, he had an O-line that was so dreadful, the new coaching staff fired them. The #1 receiver (Jackson) had the dropsies and the next best target was a rookie TE (who was NOT a until training camp). Now you have a rookie third round QB playing like a rookie third round QB on an offensively deficient team. Lovie keeps Glennon because he believes he can be coached up into a future starter. Lovie doesn’t keep the veteran O-linemen because he doesn’t believe they can play any better?.Those who believe that Lovie is a great HC,and those who believe that hiring Lovie was a mistake, can both agree on one thing. Those two decisions are a glimpse into the future of Lovies success.
July 10th, 2014 at 8:17 am
“To be honest, Joe is growing intrigued to see what Glennon could do with a different coaching staff in a different offense.”
Congratulations Joe you’re starting to see the light…MG8 just might be more than the career backup you originally wanted to portray him as. At least he has shown enough to convince Lovie, Licht, and Tedford that he is worth seeing what they’ve got with him.
July 10th, 2014 at 8:32 am
Realistically, if we eliminated VJax’s drops on 3rd downs (from perfectly-thrown Glennon passes), we may have been able to win 3 or 4 more games last year. (even with the poor coaching, poor scheme, & all the injuries)… I believe that speaks volumes for our potential success as a team this year & Glennon’s potential success as a future starting QB.
July 10th, 2014 at 8:59 am
Dreadful aspects of his play were evident to anyone who watched. That is hardly Cannon arm numbers on 11-30 yard passes.
He is a tough kid and hard worker, and that and 75 cents will get you a small cup of coffee.
And he got worse and worse as the season went along. Not a good sign.
And yes Josh is way more mobile than Glennon, even at 35. Just about every QB in the league is, except Manning.
Please don’t get hurt Josh, or we are doomed.
July 10th, 2014 at 9:04 am
I hope Glennon stays on the bench, not because McCown stunk it up or got hurt, but so he can learn. I think with at least a year holding the clip board and watching the game from the sideline will help develop him further, and get him ready for another shot. The NFL network was talking about Josh Gordon and how he has hurt his team by leaving the Browns very thin at receiver. Now in lieu of this new revelation a lot of analyst are thinking the Browns should sit Manziel because of the teams shortage of receivers. They are afraid it will put Manziel in a bad situation and he will struggle breaking into the NFL. Excuses already. Nobody wanted to give Glennon a pass for the horrible offense he had to take over but they are concerned that it will make Manziel vulnerable and it would make him look average or worst. Funny how excuses seem to work for a first round QB but the same people can’t afford the same excuses for a third round QB.
July 10th, 2014 at 9:11 am
That statistical analysis was exactly what I saw last season as well. He lacked any real zip or threat to put the ball 11-30 yards down the field, he relied mainly on checkdowns to pad the stats, stats that mislead some to thinking he is a special talent.
July 10th, 2014 at 9:18 am
“…if we eliminated VJax’s drops on 3rd downs (from perfectly-thrown Glennon passes), we may have been able to win 3 or 4 more games…”
It is this type of insane MGM comment that make me feel like I entered the twilight zone when I read them. This is equal to the: “Glennon is like Bress or B-rady” observations MGMers throw out there. So, it is now the fault of an Pro Bowl WR that The Cannon’s numbers suck so bad? That Kool-Aid must be some potent stuff…
July 10th, 2014 at 9:26 am
Most of the teams the Bucs faced in November and December had very good defenses, so personally I wouldn’t get too worked up over his numbers getting worse as the season progressed. No doubt some of it was because of D coordinators finding flaws in his rookie game, but Seattle, San Fran, Carolina, and New Orleans twice are a tall order for most QB’s.
July 10th, 2014 at 9:32 am
he had no weapons short of a triple covered vjax and an o line that pee wee herman could penetrate.
whatta ya want from a guy lol
July 10th, 2014 at 9:36 am
Longer stride doesn’t always mean faster. Think track and field (Usain is the rare exception…but even his starts are slower compared to the rest of the field). The longer stride will help more with the top end speed, but if you’re looking for a mobile QB (in the sense of moving around the pocket, not necessarily running downfield) then taller isn’t necessarily going to mean faster.
July 10th, 2014 at 9:51 am
Might be a good idea to follow Joe’s links and look at the PFF’s stats. I don’t intend to list them but they give McCown 9 positives to 4 negatives compared to 7 positives and 5 negatives for Cutler and 6 positives and 8 negatives for Glennon. Most concerning are his statistics while under pressure. Of course there are those that will find hundreds of excuses for the negatives and it could be that they will be proven right with time, but one thing is sure, if he takes over the team early this season he will not be ready and we will be in for a miserable time. For those who want him to start the season ……. be careful of what you wish for. For now our best chance for a successful season lies with McCown, like him or not!
July 10th, 2014 at 10:04 am
I’m not the biggest MG8 fan, but he doesn’t have to be the best QB in the NFL. Remember, he has the Dunkaneers now. If he learns Tedford system and fixes a few of his flaws….He just has to be better than average. If not we could draft a good QB in the next draft.
July 10th, 2014 at 10:21 am
@ Harry
I’m not a MGM’ster. I’m actually the co-captain of the JMP (Josh McCown Posse)… And I love VJax, but his drops last year (especially on 3rd downs in key game-changing situations) were ridiculous. Just calling it like it is, sir.
July 10th, 2014 at 10:33 am
Mike Glennon is our QB of the future.
– Lovie Smith
Mike Glennon has a cannon.
– Jason Licht
Mike Glennon is a more advanced pocket passer than RG3.
-Greg Cosell
Glennon has a chance to develop into our franchise QB, and that excites me. The kid works his tail off, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to have him on our team.
Glennon remained on the roster, while several O-Linemen have not. Addtionally, we passed on John Manziel and any other QB in this past draft. That tells me they really do like Glennon.
July 10th, 2014 at 10:50 am
I think some people just look at the numbers against blitzes and pressures and say that MG8 cannot handle it. But when you take into account that MG8 is a rookie, and the fact that you have a rookie in the back field that is supposed to help pickup the blitz. you have a rookie TE that is supposed to help pickup the blitz. take this into the numbers and you wonder how Glennon survived the season at all. ( and that is something old man mccown has never down.) (ever in 15 seasons)
July 10th, 2014 at 10:52 am
You MG doubters lost the push to have him traded away during the offseason or draft period, all you got left now is keep him off the field because McCown is better and the real QB here. I’m not convinced.
July 10th, 2014 at 11:06 am
After reading those points I can’t help but think they took in Charles Simms for MG8. That and other reasons too.
July 10th, 2014 at 11:16 am
Glennon will have a more successful NFL career than Johnny Manziel. Book it.
July 10th, 2014 at 11:27 am
Excuses, excuses, excuses… that’s all I ever see here from these MGMsters. M. Ryan had nothing to work with last year, but still showed guts, managed to put up good numbers (4500+), and lead his O to a 14th overall ranking. Even sleepy, leaky Rip Van Freeman managed to pull off comeback wins in spite of no weapons and very mediocre o-line play his first 2 years. MG8 lost games for us last year (remember AZ?) and disappeared in the second half games completely all year. If he had any “Franchise” potential at all shouldn’t he have pulled off at least 1 comeback win by putting the team on his back leading them??
I’m not an MG8 hater, but open your eyes people, he’s not very good right now. Maybe a year or two of good coaching and letting the game slow down a bit will do him some good and he can turn into a average/decent starter. But he just doesn’t have the “it” factor.
I have faith in a strong Lovie D and thou he’s not great, McCown is a leader and I “hope” he can give us what he displayed in those games last year cause that is really our only chance at a .500+ season this year.
July 10th, 2014 at 11:37 am
Joe,
I’m sure the information from PFF you write about is probably accurate…but it still doesn’t mean the MG8 doesn’t have a bright future ahead of him as a starting QB. Statistically, Glennon had the same type of numbers that other rookie QB’s named Manning, Brady, Wilson, Ryan, Dalton, Romo, Rothlisberger, Flacco, etc.. had their rookie seasons. Most rookies struggle reading defenses and delivering the ball under pressure. I’m sure it didn’t help that Glennon was kept on a very tight leash by Shiano/Sullivan. I don’t think anyone is saying that Glennon is anywhere close to being a finished product…but I don’t get all the negativity by some that he can’t be every bit as good as the other QB’s I mentioned….because statistically, he’s solidly in the same zone they all were after one year!
July 10th, 2014 at 11:51 am
Why are we talking about our backup qb.
July 10th, 2014 at 12:01 pm
Being a little rattled by the blitz is pretty much indicative of any rookie QB, I don’t see anything really Earth shattering here.
McCown has a similar split when it comes to 11-30 yds compared to his short/bomb passes as well, IIRC.
Nothing to see here, can’t wait for real football.
July 10th, 2014 at 12:05 pm
I don’t know what the heck people expect from these players. It’s not like he was a 1st round pick where there are lofty expectations. I’m not in the “MGM” and I don’t care what stats you throw out. If you expected Mike Glennon to come out of the box a pro bowl QB you’re an idiot and delusional. Do yourself a favor before you regurgitate some other anti-Glennon nonsense and look up Peyton’s rookie stats.
HE WAS A ROOKIE! THAT’S WHAT HAPPENS TO ROOKIES.
July 10th, 2014 at 12:27 pm
These are the same people that praised a turnover prone 1st round bust who was invisible for 3 qts and when he wasn’t invisible all he could do was throw a deep ball. (I know I know it was all Schiano’s fault.) Your opinions mean nothing. Your not talent evaluators and your not as smart as you claim to be. MG8 is the future. Embrace it. Love it. Accept it.
–LONG LIVE THE MGM!!!
July 10th, 2014 at 12:27 pm
Comparing glennons rookie numbers to peyton mannings rookie season is the most foolish and naive argument given by MGM’sters
July 10th, 2014 at 12:34 pm
Peyton had comeback wins his first year and didn’t disappear on his team in the second half of games… bad comparison. Potential “franchise” QBs show more EVEN AS A ROOKIE.
I didn’t expect much from Glennon last year, but for some of you to call him the next Flacco, Ryan, Wilson, etc… is just plan ludicrous… based on what? You’re talking about 3 QBs that, even as rookie, lead their teams to the playoffs. Glennon couldn’t lead 1 comeback win much less an attempt in 13 games When the game was on the line he crumbled throwing bad passes, picks, taking bad sacks, and going 3 and out. You really expect me to believe he shares no blame in a 4-12 record and the 32nd ranked offense??
Somebody please provide valid evidence showing me he has “franchise” potential instead of giving me a bunch of excuses….? At this point he has more good backup potential than anything else. I’m not counting him out, he is a hard worker and with good coaching maybe turnout to be decent.
July 10th, 2014 at 12:40 pm
^^^
I believe Stevek did that, you just are choosing to ignore it
July 10th, 2014 at 12:50 pm
Yeah he’s another Manning.
Just like Raheem was the next Chuck Noll since they had the same record their first year of coaching.
Lunacy.
Even Schiano didn’t have enough confidence in the guy to let him do anything much beyond glorified handoffs.
Not gonna cut it.
July 10th, 2014 at 12:56 pm
Comparing the #’s of MG8 and Matt Ryan from last year is just a bad idea. MG8 was a ROOKIE for crying out loud !!!!!!!
July 10th, 2014 at 12:59 pm
McCown and Glennon both have stats/analysis on that sight…
July 10th, 2014 at 1:31 pm
@ Eric
Well I’ve read some of your posts and you seem to think highly of Lovie as a coach, so with that in mind then you have to believe that (as Joe used to love to point out) whatever fears L&L had about Glennon before they held mini-camp were completely gone afterwards. These guys are betting their jobs on Glennon being a franchise QB based on their word and actions this past draft. I would say it might be a good idea to learn to like MG8, he may be here for awhile and could even end up starting sooner than some would like to imagine.
July 10th, 2014 at 1:43 pm
@toes.
I don’t think they are basing their jobs on that. Lovie doesn’t want to add an inexperienced QB into the mix with all the changes in place on offense, with a new system.
You are putting way to much faith in coach speak.
Remember Reevis? Chucky used to rave about Chris Sims. Its a game they all play. Ask any NFL coach about their back up QB and your gonna get the same answer.
Lovie isn’t going to state his back up QB stinks. He may have to use the guy.
If he was that high on him, he wouldn’t have gotten Josh and named him starter.
July 10th, 2014 at 2:42 pm
You guys take everything so literally! By no means am I comparing their statistics side by side. The point is, for those who need to buy a clue, is that rookies make mistakes even eventual hall of famers. If you bothered to look at the stats he threw for 26 TDs and 28 INTs. 28 INTERCEPTIONS. Now, given the situation and talent level(as pointed out above, Glennon 3rd round, Peyton 1st), he played like a rookie. Buc89 and Bucsrokk-That is the point!
Now you can both cry about the Bucs not drafting a QB or, you can get on board and stop being a-holes!
July 10th, 2014 at 3:06 pm
Rookie of the Year… Next. Now go grab a beer and a Massage at Asian Therapy. That’s the only Happy Ending the Mike Cannon lynch mob will get.
July 10th, 2014 at 3:17 pm
@Barry- There’s pretty much nothing else to say to that! Zing!!!
July 10th, 2014 at 3:40 pm
@bucsfanman
The point is that even though MG8 had better stats than peytons rookie season, peyton manning showed much more promise and a higher ceiling than glennon did. Maybe the terms “higher ceiling” and “promise” are confusing to you and the rest of the mob. Manning wowed people with his play as a rookie and showed he had a high ceiling by carrying the team on his back and winning. That gives you something to look for in the future, regardless of interceptions. Glennon never wowed me and I watched all of his games, I can honestly only remember one play(where glennon threw a laser to underwood for a TD) that I was impressed with glennon. Glennon has shown very little reason to think he will ever be a star, or even a top 15 quarterback. He does not lead from behind, he does not make people around him better, he does not have that fire in his eyes you see other qb’s have(which was shown in mannings rookie season, NOT glennons.)
@Toes
Lovie/Licht can easily be saying “lies” about their backup qb to try and raise his value to be traded later, this year or next, and they could have thought next years draft class of qb’s is better than this years. Just because you pass on qb in one draft doesn’t mean the backup is the qb of the future. Just because Lovie and Licht say glennon is the qb of the future doesn’t mean he is the qb of the future. NFL management is a big poker game, you never announce your hand. You do what you think will be the most beneficial for your team. For example, saying glennon is a great qb then trading him for more than he’s worth.
July 10th, 2014 at 5:09 pm
Wow Bucsfanman you really missed the point didn’t you?… Bucs89 you summed it up nicely well said.”Potential, high ceiling, and promise” are all good words, but unfortunately none describe Glennon, IMO. He may turn out to be an OK, middle of the pack type QB in a couple years, but “Franchise” or ‘Elite”? No way!
Yes, he was a rookie and of course they make mistakes and you have to expect that. But he did nothing to give me “hope” for future greatness or even impress me at all. AGAIN, every top QB was a rookie at one time and ALL had a come from behind signature win at some point in that season showing “promise””potential” or “high ceiling”. Hell even Geno Smith and EJ Manual had that last year! Glennon, nope! He disappeared in the second half. If you want a mediocre QB that can’t bring his team from behind and crumbles under pressure, then I guess Glennon is your man. I personally would love to see the day when we actually had a “Franchise” type QB.
And for the record I never said anything about drafting a QB, you need to reread my two posts. Also, the only reason I compared him with M.Ryan was cause some of you in this thread have made that comparison, well Ryan did damn good job with all of the same excuses you guys are making for Glennon in both his Rookie year AND last year.
Again…”Somebody please provide valid evidence showing me he has “franchise” potential instead of giving me a bunch of excuses….?”
July 10th, 2014 at 6:51 pm
Joe, I’m curious as to why you think Josh McCown is that much better than glennon? To me, and I’m not your MGM member or supported. I think we have two back ups in these qbs. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised to see glennon beat out McCown. I’d rather see glennon beat out McCown and see what he does rather than McCown play qb who’s a 35 year old journey man and know what he is and it’s not the future franchise. Glenno will either improve or lead us to drafting an elite prospect at qb.
July 10th, 2014 at 7:46 pm
“Lovie/Licht can easily be saying “lies” about their backup qb to….”
They could be full of sh!t, or (and I know this is going to sound like crazy talk to some) they could actually be pretty high on Glennon and are telling the fans and general public their genuine opinion about the guy. Perhaps the Bucs coaches are better at recognizing talent than the typical JBF blogger?
July 10th, 2014 at 10:15 pm
Where is that video of McCown playing basketball? He’s very athletic…
July 10th, 2014 at 10:35 pm
Interesting article. I’m beginning to think Glennon might be the QB version of Forrest Gump. He is very lucky if you think about it, maybe his whole career will be charmed. The guy is drafted in the 3rd round by a team with a young 1st round “franchise” quarterback, yet he gets named the starter in his rookie year and starts 12 games. Other rookie 3rd round QBs would kill to get that much NFL game time experience. The entire coaching staff that chose him gets canned and he is “demoted” to backup QB. So now he is off the hook for the team’s performance this season. He can spend this year studying the new playbook and soaking up as much knowledge from probably the friendliest veteran QB around. Someone who is truly willing to be his friend and give all the advice he has learned from his many years in the league. I will be interested in seeing if Glennon will put it all together by year 3. He has been very fortunate so far, I hope his luck will be our luck.
July 11th, 2014 at 7:36 am
@Buc89 and Bucsrokk- No, I get the point. There were higher expectations for Manning AND Ryan(since we’re talking about him also) BECAUSE they were 1st round draft picks and picked there because of their “ceiling and promise”. Personally, I think Glennon has a long way to go to reach that level(for the record, I never said he was elite or a franchise guy)
To beat a dead horse, I was merely offering that the expectations for a 3rd round draft pick starting his rookie season were a little lofty.
I don’t subscribe to the “mob” as it’s termed here. I think that some of the criticisms are unfair and that’s my opinion. The best QB will start on Sundays and whoever that might be will have this rabid fan foaming at the mouth.
The problem with blogs is that the written word can be read differently than the context it was intended. This is a prime example. Show me where I coined Glennon a “Franchise or elite QB”. That I am willing to acquiesce football knowledge to the coaches and people running the team suddenly makes me a “mob” member! Forgive me for wading through the vitriol for a team that people here supposedly are fans of.
Like I said before, there’s room on this wagon. You can stand there and throw barbs or you can climb aboard. Either way it won’t change our QB situation…..again, that’s the point!
July 11th, 2014 at 9:47 am
I gotcha and trust me when I say that whomever the QB, is I’m a Bucs fan and will always support my team! Right now it’s McCown and I’m all in. That could very well change in the coming months and I’ll except that and support Glennon at that time.
QB is the most important position on field. So regardless of ones draft position, when that QB takes the field as a starter, there will be expectations and he will be judged as such. I never brought up Manning or Ryan originally, my opinion of the matter was only in rebuttal of previous posts. I understand there is a difference in a 1st rounder and a 3rd rounder. It just errks me when many (mobsters) believe this kid is the next coming… based on what?? What the hell are these people seeing that I’m not?? Please show me, I’m open to it.
For now the coaches and the people running the team with the best football knowledge have spoken and McCown was brought and named the Starter. So that settles that for now.
I’m not a Glennon hater at all and believe he may turn out to be another decent “bridge” QB to the one that may get drafted next year (or the year after). I just don’t see a very high ceiling on the kid and don’t think he’ll get that much better than what we saw from him last year.
So for now I’ll echo a previous post from Buchead407 above…
“Why are we talking about our backup qb”
Go Bucs!!!

Well said.
I think we’ll see what we have come preseason. It’s going to play out one way or another. For our sake, let’s hope that the guys we have get it done this year.

I’m a little confused. Can someone please explain exactly how you can pre-determine someone else’s ‘ceiling’ after less than a year in a new job? And before someone starts, I’ll have you know that I don’t believe in ‘crystal balls’ or ‘Ouji boards’.
Now ‘if’ we were talking about someone who has been playing for, oh, say, 12 years, for EIGHT different teams, and was considered a ‘backup’ on most of them, then *maybe*, you can start the ‘ceiling’ conversation.

The answers are in the stats, but that doesn”t mean what the MG8 Mob thinks it means…
Perhaps Glennon isn’t starting, because the o-line is such a question mark? At the very least, the line isn’t stable – which requires movement from the QB – and I don’t know if YOU’VE noticed but that isn’t Herr Glennon’s thang.
