McCoy Gets Triple-Teamed In Practice

July 30th, 2014

McCoydrillThe Bucs posted a great practice video snippet online celebrating a catch by rookie wide receiver Robert Herron. However, more interesting to Joe than Herron juggling a ball he should have caught smoothly is Gerald McCoy’s experience at the line of scrimmage.

McCoy explodes off the snap far faster than Adrian Clayborn to his left and gets engaged by right guard Patrick Omameh. Demar Dotson slides over to help contain manbeast No. 93, and then center Evan Dietrich-Smith isn’t being challenged so he comes to finish off McCoy.

You can enjoy the short video right here.

Clayborn slipped inside after Dotson and McCoy got locked up in front of him, but Clayborn appears to back off rather than explode into the A-gap and disrupt Josh McCown or physically engage Bobby Rainey. Joe’s not ripping Clayborn, linemen are typically told to lay off the initial thrust of a play, rather than potentially injure someone.

Regardless, the net result is McCoy fighting off a triple team, something the Panthers, the Bucs’ opening day opponent, did to McCoy repeatedly. This one practice play was a great illustration of how the McCoy will need help if the Bucs are going to pressure quarterbacks without endless blitzes.

GMC is a beast! looking for him to repeat his success this upcoming season. Clayborn looked like sh*t on this play.

  2. Frank87 Says:

Haven’t really heard much about our high priced free agent DE Johnson

  3. Harry Says:

I could not get the video to play 🙁

  4. BFFL Says:

More important is how quickly McCown got the ball out. That is critical to neutralize the pass rush and make it easier for the OL. Just watch NE or Denver..the ball comes out quickly. This is why Brady and Manning always have good OL play. This also makes me less concerned about the Bucs Guards. As long as the guards can push the pile for run plays then the Bucs will be fine.

  5. Dooley Says:

I’m not too worried about Clayborn, Matt Ryan knows how it feels to have AC bear down on a QB and usually when a D causes disruption in practice the offense is still afforded the opportunity to develop the play. It’s all about reps this time of year .

  6. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Soooooo, Clayborn stunted. And Joe says nothing. hmmmmmmmm.

  7. Tom Edrington Says:

Now Gerald knows what Lee Roy Selmon was up against every game in his career. Selmon played on a three-man front which made it easier for teams to triple him.

  8. BFFL Says:

I Like the quick pass from McCown. Watch NE & Denver. The ball comes out quick for Brady and Manning. This will neutralize the pass rush and make it easier on the OL. This is why the OL’s for Brady and Manning are always statistically very good. With a fast paced quick passing scheme I am less worried about the Guards for pass blocking. Hopefully they can move the pile on run plays

  9. Baz Says:

That’s a pretty saliant point, Tom. Can you IMAGINE what Selmon would have done with Sapp or GMC alongside him? /drool

  10. The_Buc_Realist Says:

    @baz

well, we know what Clayborn had done next to McCoy, basically nothing!!! that is why Lovie demoted and replaced clayborn on the first day of freeagency!!!

    Realist…ignorance must bee bliss.

Btw, Clayborn had more sacks in his first 3 years than McCoy. What’s that? McCoy was injured?

So was Clayborn. They played the same number of games.

Your insistence that Clayborn sucks doesn’t makee you look smart. It makes you look stupid.

The man is a great player who STILL had 5.5 sacks cing back from injury. McCoy only had 3 coming back from injury.

McCoy took the big leap in his 4TH year…which iss what Clyborn is entering.

And for all you idiots saying how bad he looked on this play, Joe said it himself. He is not allowed to hit the QB so he backed off. At least, in a live game situation, he would have.

Better to wonder what the ret of the dline was doing. Especially our new “Simeon Rice”.

Bonzai, I’d learn football before calling others ignorant.
McCoy was a UT drawing double and triple teams. Clayborn is an edge rushing DE.
Sack sacks don’t account for TFL, QB pressures or disrupting the running game.
McCoy is maybe the best in the game awaiting a huge contract, while AC was replaced immediately and no extension either.

    Biff is right.

Bonzai just like Clayborn because of his name and story.

Bonzai should be Mark Dominik’s biggest fan. Why? Because the rock star went after “name recognition” guys. Didn’t know anything about talent… especially not as much as Lovie.

  15. buc'd Up Says:

You can’t shoot a man with a hammer. That being said, I’m Hoping the new coaching staff will finally use their weapons properly. I’m exited for any Buc that is out there working his tail off trying to make this team. Bowers gets picked on a lot and maybe rightfully so. But, Clayborn has shown some talent and the ability to use it. I’m optimistic, but he needs to stay focused and avoid injury.

  16. Piratic Says:

Joe: If you’re gonna call him “the McCoy”, you really should use a capital T.

  17. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Biff, do you really think I do not know the difference between UT and DE??? Really???

The two are similar because, as you may recall, McCoy was drafted the year before, and both were part of “double dip” drafting classes order to fix the line. You twits are judging Clayborn harshly when he has actually shown BETTER results than McCoy.

Realist was one of the very same guys that wanted McCoy gone too.

This isn’t about different positions. It is about production. Clayborn has produced enough to be given credit, at least through this year.

Biff, before you accuse people of not knowing football, get your little head screwed on right and understand what is being said. Like I said…ignorance is bliss.

  18. PhantomVash808 Says:

Bucs need to give a new contract to McCoy ASAP and not wait like the Lions are doing with Suh.
