USA Today: 2014 Bucs Finish 3-13

June 3rd, 2014
A USA Today columnist is predicting a dire season for the Bucs if they are banking on QB Josh McCown.

A USA Today columnist predicts a dire season for the Bucs if they bank on QB Josh McCown.

Bucs coach Lovie Smith and general manager Jason Licht have enacted just about the biggest rebuild of an NFL roster as you might see in one offseason. L&L have purged so many starters, both good and bad, it sometimes spins Joe’s head.

Hell, just the offensive line alone has been gutted and maybe not for the better. Looking back on the past five months, it has been anything but quiet at One Buc Palace.

Color Nate Davis unimpressed. The USA Today football scribe put fingers to keyboard and believes the Bucs will be worse this season, not better. Worse even than the worst season under vilified former Bucs commander Greg Schiano.

Davis points to one simple reason: It begins and ends with quarterback, and let’s just say Davis is not buying what Lovie is selling with Josh McCown.

Buccaneers 3-13: Big gamble that 2013 Josh McCown is real deal, and journeyman QB of previous 11 years is gone for good.

Apparently, Davis was catching blowback from readers about his Bucs prediction, and took to Twitter to explain.

Forgive Joe for throwing water on the bonfire, but Joe thinks Davis is onto something, but Joe does not predict a second double-digit loss season. Before the regular season, Joe will throw out his annual educated guess on what may happen.

We all know about that ugly word “hope,” and the Bucs are doing a whole lotta hoping that the McCown they signed is the five-game guy from last year and not the journeyman of previous NFL seasons.

The Bucs are also doing a whole lotta hoping on the offensive line. On paper, the offensive line is maybe marginally better. Maybe. It really doesn’t matter how many weapons surround McCown. If there’s no blocking, it won’t matter.

Joe has more confidence the defense will improve than he does that the offensive line will be better; that’s for sure.

Our offensive line has been overrated for years, even when they were all playing well. The OLine will be fine, the defense will be improved and the offense in general will be competent. I see 6-8 wins personally.

  3. phil Says:

We made a mistake when we passed on Johnny Football. We still don’t have a quarterback. I don’t see McCown or Glennon taking us to the playoffs. At least 3-13 will put us in the Jameis Winston sweepstakes.

  4. BFFL Says:

Defense is what dictates wins and losses in the NFC South so please stop using offense as a reason to justify any record predictions.

  5. Macabee Says:

I don’t have a problem with Nate’s prediction. I have a problem with it being made sight unseen – before preseason, no review of what’s going on today, prediction based solely on last year’s record.

Did a little research on Nate who is probably a nice fellow, but not the first place I would go if filling out my wagers before the races. Nate picked the Falcons to win the NFC- South last year. Entitled to his opinion, but just another guy with a pen and mic in his hand!

  6. William Says:

3 step back and release is coming to Tampa. up Tempo and it helps the line jell together and avoid sacks. Sims & Height are our friends. Go Bucs!

  7. Robert7 Says:

Good thing the cannon will be starting

  8. Eric Says:

It would be impossible to fix a team that clowns like rock, Raheem, and Schiano spent five years destroying, in one offseason, to the point of no apparent weaknesses.

Lovie and company are doing a masterful job.

  9. Meh Says:

I’m not as optimistic as most, but three wins? That sounds ridiculous to me. Just improving the defensive play calling from the Schiano disaster should get us more than 3 wins.

  10. nate_tweetz Says:

3-13? Worse than last year? How are we going to be worse by not having to deal with a Josh Freeman mental breakdown?, A MRSA epidemic?, A “cupid shuffle” on the defensive line?, A rookie QB?, An awful O-line?, A starting rookie CB?, an offense so vanilla and predictable my 4 year old daughter could predict our next play.

If we could pull off 4 wins with all that crap going on how will we be even worse this year? Because of McCown? because of a new offense? That’s almost laughable to me. A new offense drawn up on a dirty napkin would be more effective than the one we ran last year. If McCown blows out loud, 2nd year Glennon will step in. with WAY MORE weapons than he had last year. Our defense should be better this year than last…. so many reasons as to why this prediction makes no sense. I’m saying we will win the Superbowl, but 3 wins??? SMH.

  11. nate_tweetz Says:

**I’m NOT saying we will win the superbowl, but…**

Wonder if we’ll be all eating crab legs next mays draft

  14. SAMCRO Says:

I put Nate’s prediction in the same category as the uninformed fans wanting Wright to get axed. When a sports reporter wants to get their fix for attention and feel relative again, they just write something provocative and throw it against the wall to see if it sticks. Who’s next locally? I think Stroud is due soon. He can’t go more than 2-3 weeks without a fix. lol

  15. knucknbuc Says:

Haha yea right 3 wins? I’m sorry but just switching from Rutgers to lovie gives us 4 wins guaranteed. Not to mention we have better players and more depth that’s at least 2 wins there at least. This guy is an idiot no way do we win less games with lovie then we did Rutgers. I doubt this guy even watched any bucs games last year. Why would his opinion matter on the bucs?

  16. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

I don’t expect miracles after 5 years of Dominik. .500 would be a great start.

  19. Patrick in VA Says:

I’m with Eric. There will be holes but every team has them. That’s the nature of a league with a salary cap. Love the job they’re doing and the direction we’re heading in. We clearly were not 2 players away, like Schiano thought we were, so an overhaul was necessary. Some of these guys aren’t going to be world beaters but we need them to be serviceable while we’re building and we can get another FA/draft class in. We’ve got pros behind the wheel now, let’s let them do their jobs.

  20. Bawlmerbucfan Says:

And someone please tell me why we should actually care what this guy has to say?

  21. Harry Says:

No way just 3 wins. Panthers are going to struggle this year not having any returning WRs – rookie WRs have a learning curve, and I am not that impressed with Kelvin Benjamin’s hands. I predict a 4th place finish.

ATL, if Julio Jones is healthy, could be pretty good. But safety net TE Gonzales is gone – that will hurt, and both O & Dlines are untested. ATL will not be what they were in years past.

NO will have another great year. But NFC South is not the powerhouse it has been. I see it improving over last year, but with our D I think we can be in most games. No way just 3 wins, much closer to around 8-8

  22. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Billboard Material-GO BUCS!

  23. dick2111 Says:

@Joe “It really doesn’t matter how many weapons surround McCown. If there’s no blocking, it won’t matter.”

Concur 100% Joe. The offensive line is the key to how many wins we get this season. As it stands right now, I’m not all that impressed … too many question-marks.

However, I’m convinced that Lovie and Jason recognize the lack of quality starters and depth in several OL positions, and will address that prior to September. Lots of quality starters across the league from last year will become available prior to and during training camp. I also wouldn’t rule out any trades to get better OL starters. We’re pretty deep at several positions.

  24. RealityCheck Says:

Since we’re making predictions based on nothing, I think we go 18-23 this year.

  25. BoJim Says:

We will not lose 13 games. Probably won’t make the playoffs but we will win a few more games than last year. As for the oline, I’m worried to but we really haven’t see them play yet. Chill.

  26. Jim Walker Says:

5-11 is probably more accurate. Defense will win you 5 games if the scheme is good. However, with no o-line I don’t see the Bucs putting up the 24 or more points needed to keep up with the NFC South’s high power offenses.

  27. Kaptain Morgan Says:

    Rome wasn’t built in a day…
    Patience is a virtue…
    A watched pot never boils…

…now that I’ve run out of cliches for it being the 1st season under a new Coach & GM, I would say a step back to 3-13 with the changes made is not anticipated nor welcomed around here. I believe we have upgraded in several categories (including play calling without seeing Telford’s offense) just by the sheer fact we have a “proven NFL coach” running this team. At minimum I am expecting 6-7 wins for this team in 2014. I would be happy with 8. I would be ecstatic at 9-10. I would be over the moon at 11. And I would think of another cliche for happiness for anything over 12 wins…

  28. finishers Says:

    7-9 or 8-8

  29. Jeagan1999 Says:

It’s a free country and this guy can think whatever he wants! Of course I think that he is SMOKING CRACK if he really believes we will go 3-13! I think we are an 8-8 team at the worst…11-5 at best with a shot at a playoff spot.

  30. Dewey Selmon Says:

Our defense will win us 2-3 games, also will keep the score low enuff for the offense to score a late td/fg. No way in heck we don’t win 5 games min. This guy is just trying to stir the pot during a slow period during the off season.

  31. DallasBuc Says:

We are rebuilding in a major way and our QB is another McCown. What the eff? His brother Luke is probably a better QB. 3-13 is very possible…much more likely than 13-3 or anything close to a winning season.
Hope I am wrong! Go Bucs

  32. gatrbuc17 Says:

Just start the Cannon and we will be fine

  33. Drew Says:

The truth… They will either be really good or really bad. Media Moguls will write what they write and I personally don’t pay much attention to individuals who report through a crystal ball medium.

  34. You Go Joe Says:

I like Joe’s view of hope, because it is a gamble in offense at the very least. Defense we will be solid, but when the O-Line does not work and fails to perform it’ll be 2013 season all over again, just less expensive. And I mean our Guard issues.

  35. Oracle Says:

As much as I would love to see a winning season in year one for the new regime, as the traumatized fan that I am over the last decade of bad football, I think the win loss column has to take a backseat to fool ol fashioned competitive football. Would love to believe that every Sunday we will be in games with a chance to win. Who knows maybe will get bad at darts again…wouldn’t that be something!!

  36. ChrisCo4Bucs Says:

    10-6

  37. BigMacAttack Says:

Jameis Winston is an idiot. He makes Cam Newton look like Einstein.

Doom and Gloom, doom and gloom, one too many Artie shells to the head.

I think the Bucs have all the tools to do what Carolina did last year and better coaches. If they stay healthy through camp, I can see 10 or 11 wins.

  38. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Ouch, but I doubted the 6-10 National press naysayers last year too (and they were a lot closer than my 10-6 prediction)

Hopefully they have it reversed and the Bucs go 13-3 regular season with the rally cry of Win it for Malcolm!

  39. Rex Says:

@nate_tweetz you are the most knowledgable person I’ve heard all offseason. I agree 100% with you on this!

  40. Buchead407 Says:

We will win more than three games. That’s ridiculous

  41. Buccanole Says:

There was a USA Today column last year that had the Texans winning the AFC South and the Falcons in the Super Bowl sooooooooooo……. yeah take this prediction seriously folks

  42. Jordan Says:

Buc’s “strength of schedule” in 2013 was one of the highest of the last decade. It would be quite improbable that their SOS in 2014 will be as high. You could put out the exact same team from last year, and expect at least a 5-11 record.

  43. Netwalker Says:

A much improved defense, from an improved D line and a scheme that has the line rushing the passer instead of dancing the doh se doh, will help a great deal. A quarter back that knows what he’s doing, with several upgrades in receivers, and hopefully an offensive scheme that makes use of the skill players, is a real improvement.

The line is concerning, but I have to think that Lovie knows that and has a plan. Record: 9 and 6.

  44. Netwalker Says:

    Err… make that 9 and 7.

  45. BirdDoggers Says:

The Bucs should see a turnaround this year with at least 6-7 wins. The one thing about Lovie, he usually has his team ready to play. The same can’t be said for the previous two head coaches.

  46. passthebuc Says:

I would be willing to bet 100K against 3-13.
wonder if he would be willing to put his money where his mouth is.

  47. ander Says:

so much negativity for you fans especially from you joe. this guy is predicting us to go 3 and 13 when we got better at every position in our team yes bucs have better receivers and the o line is better, lets be serious the o line sucked last year joseph played terrible most of the season, penn was giving up sacks like crazy and zuttah is not a good center, imo he will be better at guard. so lets stop the negativity and i know joe is still mad about the jonny football not getting drafted to the bucs but get over it, and be optimistic about mccown, i know he has been a journeymen however the guy play some good football last year so lets see what he can do. go bucs

  48. FIRETHECANNONS Says:

No blocking… hmm, that sound’s like last year. No wonder they gutted the oline.

  49. Buc the Haters Says:

Haha… This guy’s opinion was so stupid that he instantly had to start caving under the heavy wave of logic. Instant retract! What an idiot… Oh, I don’t think anyone is equipped to cover your receivers, but you’re going to lose 13 games somehow. Omg, my pinky is more knowledgeable about Buc football than this tool.

  50. Martinii Says:

Just put the pads on and turn the horses loose. Nobody alive today can tell whether the Bucs will stampede, trott, or graze. Especially this Nate dude….

  51. Buc the Haters Says:

So far, DallasBuc is the dumbest commenter of the day… Congratulations.

  52. DallasBuc Says:

  53. DallasBuc Says:

  54. Buc1987 Says:

Lots of analysts were predicting the Bucs to go backwards from 7-9 in 2012 to like 5-11 or 6-10 in 2013 before last season.

How could this be many Bucs fans wondered back then? They added Revis and Goldson, so surely they could only get better from 7-9 right. Wrong.

I’m not saying this clown is right or wrong. I’m just reminding fans about the predictions prior to last season. They all proved they were wrong. The average prediction was like 6 wins and the Bucs did worse than that.

I’m still excited for the season though. As I don’t see how the O can get much worse than last season. You can only go up or stay at 32.

Basically what I’m trying to say is. I won’t be surprised if they do go 3-13.

Care to tell us how you think that’s working out for you or ya just gonna “buc the haters maaaaaan!”

  58. Couch Fan Says:

Wow… Lol, Lovie needs to do better than 3 wins or he will be on the hot seal quickly. People dont think its possible that they get rid of Lovie quickly. I think its very possible and likely if he gets off to a Schiano type of start.

  59. Oingo Boingo Says:

Anyone predicting more than seven wins must be on crack.

  60. Swaggy64 Says:

Unfortunately, 3-13 is possible. Fortunately, it’s not likely. It could happen if all the wheels come off. If we have several major injuries and/or player suspensions. 6-8 wins is more likely, with 9 or better possible if the football gods are on our side and injuries and off the field turmoil are minimized. It seems to me that Nate is predicting a worst-case scenario for us in 2014. As a Buc fan and citizen of Tampa, I’m used to the lack of respect and general condescension from the national media. The only way to rectify that is for the Bucs to start winning and keep winning a bunch of seasons in a row. I’m hoping the Lovie Smith regime is geared to start doing that and soon.

  61. Piratic Says:

    First things first:

Someone needs to tell Lovie that his ship is listing to the left.

  62. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I think the guy is wrong, but he COULD be right if GMC and Michael Johnson get injured.

It all depends on how the injury bug falls, how the refs call games, etc.

Now that refs can easily make game changing calls, whether right or not, they are the deciding factor now. Lovie Smith is a friendly face to them, but Goldson will offset his influence.

We would be having this discusion even if we had drafted Manziel, Carr, orr Bridgewater. Why? The offensive line.

I don’t believe McCown will make it through a whole season as starter behind a great oline…and we don’t have that.

And sorry, MGMers, barring self deestruction or injury, McCowm WILL be the starterr game 1.

I think, because he had to blow up the roster, it will buy him a third year…but if they have a losing record, he’ll be forced to draft or trade for a better QB.

  66. Orca Says:

It wouldn’t take much for the O-line to be better. The overpriced, overhyped line we had never really got it done (for years). They’ve got a decent amount of talent to work with there now and a lot of upside. Lets hope Warhop knows how to mold them into a unit.

  67. Buc the Haters Says:

DBuc, your obviously out-of-touch-with-reality assessment of McCown’s potential & ability is what made me say that your above comment was dumb; that was the only logical conclusion, based on the evidence. Do you seriously think that McCown can’t effectively distribute the ball to our playmakers?? That’s all he needs to do. We don’t need a superstar QB to win games with all of our weapons & talent. I could prob take us to the playoffs & I haven’t QB’d since junior high.

Think, …if you say a college QB, then I agree with Buc the Haters. There is none to this point that had proven they are better than McCown. Not even Manziel or Bridgewater or whoever. There were no FA’s that were as qualified as McCown unless you wanted to try out all the other has beens or rehash old flames with Freeman. Johnny might be a good QB someday, but it wasn’t a mistake for the Bucs to pass on him. They had the opportunity, and clearly were NOT comfortable with him for their team (for whatever reason).

  89. Buc the Haters Says:

    12-4

  90. Thomas Says:

IF he is right, then the Bucs pick really early in the draft AND get to clear around another 25-29 million from the books (Goldson and Nicks).

Don’t worry, he is dead wrong. We will compete this year. I see a rude awakening for the haters out there. We added a couple more rows of cannons to our pirate ship this year in the off season and we;re not afraid to use them.
