New Faces Include A Frazier Cornerback
June 10th, 2014The Bucs will have six new, live bodies on the field this afternoon for the kickoff of the three-day mandatory minicamp at steamy One Buc Palace.
Joe’s especially interested in the connections of two.
Cornerback Kip Edwards is one of the six tryout players. He’s finished 2013 on the Vikings practice squad and was re-signed by the team but cut last week.
A former cornerback with a Super Bowl ring himself, Bucs defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier was the Vikings head coach last season and surely is intimately familiar with Edwards, who is one of the “long” athletic corner types Lovie Smith seems to crave. He is 6-0 or 6-1, depending on who’s measuring, and is an athletic dude at 195 pounds with good speed.
Joe’s not overhyping Edwards, but the Bucs take their cornerback evaluation and coaching seriously. Lovie Smith is a former secondary coach, Frazier, too. And current cornerbacks coach Gil Byrd is a former Pro Bowler. They see something in Edwards, who was an undrafted free agent last year out of Missouri.
Another guy to ponder is defensive tackle Ronald Talley, who was a bottom-of-the-roster guy the past few seasons in Arizona, where Bucs general manager Jason Licht was the No. 2 man.

hmmmm, no guards? I guess they are comfortable. I would not expect to find a starter or even a major contributor, but I am a little surprised

Would have liked to have seen a guard (or 3) on this list.

What about the punter? That’s the only roster position without competition at this time… Does this Van Der Kamp dude have a chance?

Orca,
Excerpts from the Iowa State Daily:
Van Der Kamp was a four-year starter at Iowa State. He was selected as a Freshman-All American in 2010, averaging more than 45 yards per punt during his first season at Iowa State, which is the second-best yardage average for a punter in school history.
A Second Team All-Big 12 selection in 2013, Van Der Kamp has placed 99 punts inside the 20-yard line throughout his career and has netted punts of more than 50 yards on 71 occasions. He has punted the ball 289 total times during his collegiate career, which is the most in Big 12 conference history.

Van Der Kamp could have a shot because of the high price for Koenen. He wasn’t drafted but was ranked the number one punter.

I know Koenen performance wasn’t stellar last year and having someone who can match his poor performance or better for the chap will be a plus. Just like a few I’m also surprise no Guards came in. Either the players available are really bad compared to ours or our current guards are doing really good.

^^ They’re going with the guards on the roster unless a quality starter becomes available…

What is the definition of a quality starter?

I would be impressed if Frazier signed 6 x pro bowl and 5 x all pro DT Kevin Williams, his old but dependable DT at the Vikings to a 1 year contract. Williams could rotate with McDonald next to McCoy on run/pass downs. Still got something in the tank (3.5 sacks in 2013) and can be had on a John Abraham-like contract.
One old dude who knows how to play could add more experience and leadership to the D-Line. Frazier knows what this guy can do!

Don’t worry – The Bucs will raid other teams practice squads after the final preseason games. There will be plenty of good young guards available then at little cost.

Hopefully van Der kamp beats put koenan. Not only is koenan obscenely overpaid. He sucks I’d feel comfortable going with a rookie there koenan shanked more punts last year then I can remember any rookie doing. He’ll what Brent Bowden doing these days (the dude we picked over Greg hardy) maybe dum dum dominik left his number in his old desk at obp.

What is the definition of a quality starter?….One that cranks with every turn of the ignition key!

we have more cap room than we can possibly make use of during the remainder of this offseason. i have zero concern over koenen’s salary or cap value in 2014
