Josh McCown = Tough

Former Super Bowl quarterback Rich Gannon talks Josh McCown.

A lot of football types are trying to make the connection between Bucs quarterback Josh McCown and former Super Bowl quarterback Rich Gannon. Like Gannon, McCown was a journeyman backup who, at 34, caught fire for five games with the Bears as he filled in for bratty Jay Cutler.

Gannon woeful with the Chiefs and had a modicum of success with the Vikings before he ignited after Chucky got a hold of him in Oakland.

While many like to connect the dots between McCown and Gannon, Gannon, speaking to Booger McFarland of WHFS-FM 98.7 recently, did not say McCown is the modern-day version of himself. But Gannon raved about McCown and thinks the Bucs have a gem.

“Booger, I like a lot of things about Josh,” Gannon said. “First and foremost I like his toughness. He has had to overcome a lot of adversity. He bounced around. Then he spent three years in Chicago and he has matured not only physically as a passer but as a person. I think he is ready for this opportunity. He was ready in Chicago, clearly. Very efficient and he finally got into a system with Marc Trestman in Chicago that made sense for him.

“I got a chance to work with him for a day along with the rest of the quarterbacks up in Chicago and I came away thoroughly impressed. He’s been through battles and he is battle-tested and a tough guy who I think will play all 16 games.”

Gannon did something rare as a player. He was on the verge of seeing his professional days over and the light bulb went on.

Now, was that his doing or was it Chucky’s or was it just a perfect confluence of Gannon’s skills arriving in Oakland at the right time to fit Chucky’s offense?

Another question to ponder: A lot of people are referring to Trestman as a guru of quarterbacks and offense. He has a history of doing those things in his long pro career. Bucs offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford has a long history of quarterback development, too, but on the college level.

As all Bucs fans learned last year, not all college guys are good fits in the NFL.

I’m a Tedford man. He’s got my support. I cant wait to see what he got!!

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Tough may be necessary with our O-line.
Mental toughness is definately necessary for any Buc QB.

What real Buc Fan doesn’t wish this guy great success?….I hope he has 3 or 4 fantastic years left in him!!!

  3. Buc the Haters Says:

I love this recent quote by Major Wright: ‘Jfrosh McCown is the real deal, believe me,’’ Wright said. “He studies the game so well that when he comes out on the field, it’s like boom, he’s got this. I wasn’t surprised by his success last year.”

  4. Buc the Haters Says:

    L.O.L. Typo…. Jfrosh?!? Omg hilarious

  5. Atlbuc40 Says:

Joe, Thank you for letting me rant on this subject last night. keep up the awesome work and thanks again for feeding my Buccaneers addiction!!!! from 600 miles away!

  6. gatrbuc17 Says:

I like Josh I really do. I liked his brother when he was here. If you guys remember when Luke was here he was widely considered the best athlete on the team. I hope he can thrive in Tedfords system but I fully believe that Glennon will be the better QB soon. Sooner rather than later I think. If the kid had any scrambling ability whatsoever I would say that he would beat Josh out before Kickoff but his limited mobility may be his achilles heel with Tedford. Either way I am more excited than Ive been in a long time for Bucs football. Nasty D coming and some Real Offensive weapons. Oline is the only ?

  7. buccinstopit Says:

Representing from Charlotte(for now). Anybody representing from Nawlins?

  8. pablo Says:

Pablo is NOT a believer in Josh. YOU ALL Know Pablo is the Leader of The MCM (Mike Cannon Mob)

Does Pablo hope Josh fails so he can be right? No..

Pablo just has seen this happen too many times in the past. . Do you guys remember when Matt Flynn had that one good game so Seattle signed him to a big contract? Or how about that great season Matt Cassel had and every one thought he’d be a solid starter? Or how about even Billy Volek? ??

Pablo doesnt wanna go down this road . Lovie do what’s right and give the keys to the offense to Mike Cannon

  9. kevin Says:

Its not impossible since its happened before. Im excited to see what happens. As for Glennon….everyone in philly speculated that chip kelly would never roll with Nick Foles due to his lack of mobility. Tedford may be the same way. Foles and Glennon are very much alike and I like Mike Glennons chances. Holy Crap is it September yet??????

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Lets have the competition…..all things equal…let McCown have the start….experience/mobility….has Lovie’s trust….lets see how it goes. We are fortunate to have Glennon as the backup.
Give the kid a couple years of mentoring/coaching and he has a chance of being really good. If McCown falters at all…yank him!!!

  11. Buc1987 Says:

“Mental toughness is definately necessary for any Buc QB.”

TBBF…the same can be said for a Buc fan as well.

  12. Andrew 1 Says:

Pablo can have Glennon. Andrew leads the JMP (Josh McCown Posse). Open to new members. Better get on before its “I told you so” time.

  13. Andrew 1 Says:

Lets not all come forward at once. Jeez.

  14. Buc1987 Says:

LOL Andrew I’m actually part of the Lovie Smith Mob the LSM. Lovie says Glennon is the future. So I don’t really need to be part of the MGM. My mob boss calls all the shots.

  15. Couch Fan Says:

Andrew 1, only I told you so’s will be coming from the MGM. 😀

Seriously though which is more likely to happen: A rookie that blossoms in his 2nd season or a 34 year old career back up that suddenly blossoms in his.. 13th season? or something close to that.

  16. BigMacAttack Says:

I’m gonna trust in Lovie and his judgement with McCown and Tedford. It’s easy for the media types to hedge their bets and play the “I don’t know” card. The truth is that the media types who haven’t been in the fire don’t really know or have the cajones to just say what they have to say. Always backhanded half doubts so when things do go well they don’t seem to be as big of fools as they really are. In closing, never trust the media because they all suck.

  17. Buc1987 Says:

    BigMacAttack …Bravo!

  18. Discount08 Says:

    Pablo—–
nobody likes a negative nancy okay. Just give this guy a chance to sit back and throw 50/50 balls all day long in the red zone to these MONSTER wide receivers he has got now and lets be excited and see what happens. Plus lets not forget about our nasty new defense and offensive lines that are in progress, plus all our freakin running backs for crying out loud ok!

  19. Bucfan#37 Says:

We all have Lovie, MG8 and McCown. What’s not to be enthused about? They are all on board the ship. They have to keep it afloat and steer around storms, icebergs and pitfalls.

  20. Captain Stagger Says:

The Trestman connection is huge. Trestman…who we should have hired instead of Schiano….was the OC and QB coach for Gruden in Oakland. So it seems under the coaching of Trestman the light came on for both Gannon and McCown.

  21. BFFL Says:

Glennon’s size, intelligence, accuracy and arm strength just cannot be overmatched by McCown. It’s just a matter of time before this becomes obvious to the coaches.

  22. BucsFanSince89 Says:

We will all be watching ESPN on October talking about how the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense is unstoppable! You read it here first! Remember me BucsFanSince89!

  23. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ BucsfanSince89

That would be a nice change of pace. As if I really had to ask, but who do see leading this unstoppable offense? long live the JMP!

  24. Drew Says:

In general… can’t wait to see what we have as a team. Something tells me these perceived under achieving players openly being discussed are going to pleasantly surprise all of us.

Here’s to the success of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2014. Coined from the way Pablo expresses himself in third person. Drew say, this is the year!

  25. Your mom Says:

    Insane McCown Posse, I’m in.

  26. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Your mom

Nice. was kind of iffy on the Insane Clown Posse reference, but screw it, its the Insane McCown Posse from here on out. who else wants to join the IMP?

  27. BigMacAttack Says:

    Just Win Baby!!!

  28. BigMacAttack Says:

Get your tickets now if you don’t already have them. It’s gonna be a fun ride!

  29. buc4lyfe Says:

    There’s pablo

I don’t know if it’s more fun clowning you or Josh Freeman here. Matt flynn, matt cassel that’s your best? Technically you can add Mccown to that list. Won’t call you any names because I don’t want you to change you’re handle I enjoy when the entire site makes fun of you. The way I see it I’m laughing at MCM…wake up those two guys pablo mentioned and every qb bust to ever put on a jersey were all rookies at some point, headed into their 2nd year with someone hoping they were the franchise qb they were looking for, both had great games and potential in the beginning…….remind you of anyone? Except glennon hasn’t had a dominating game yet but lol keep on looking at the tape

  30. jgw Says:

I can’t determine what has been more annoying over the last few months: Joe’s infatuation with an inept college qb, or Pablo. It’s like, would I rather have Joe as GM and set the franchise back 5 years, or spend 5 minutes with Pablo? I just don’t know.

  31. Buc the Haters Says:

I am an official member of the JMP… And I think he’ll possibly take us to a couple Superbowls before Glennon finally gets his chance to start. I’d bet money on it, too.

  32. b.Bruce Says:

Glennon will come in for an injured Josh McCown and never look back on his way to the Superbowl.

  33. Buc the Haters Says:

I do like Glennon, but McCown is just a little bit better than Glennon in virtually every aspect of the game as of right now. And we need his mobility while our line gels.

  34. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Buc the Haters

That’s cool. looks like the McCown posse is growing now! whoop whoop.

  35. Joe Says:

    inept college qb

    (Rolls eyes, smh)

  36. Eric Says:

If the cannon has put on a lot of muscle I’d hate to see what he looked like before.

  37. PRBucFan Says:

    I’m a member of BOM

    Believers of McCown

    😀

  38. PRBucFan Says:

“a 34 year old career back up that suddenly blossoms in his..”

On the contrary he already showed that he began that process last year broski, and it’s not like he’s gotten 13 years of chances to be the starter for his prospective teams.

His time is now, Glennon’s may be later, hopefully he is taking those ballet lessons cause he’ll need those pretty moves to make something of himself in this league or else it sack master Glennon all over again.

  39. PRBucFan Says:

    LONG LIVE THE BOM!

  40. JC De La Torre Says:

Count me in as a member of the Insane McCown Posse. If MG8 sees the field, things have gone very…very wrong.

  41. Couch Fan Says:

On the contrary he already showed that he began that process last year broski, and it’s not like he’s gotten 13 years of chances to be the starter for his prospective teams.
    ——————-
for 5 games against bad teams? If thats what you call blossoming then Glennon is also blossoming since he had a good 4 game stretch against much better better teams. 😉

  42. BoJim Says:

As much as I would like Glennon to play now, think he would benefit greatly from sitting behind McCown for a year. I wanna see Josh play great. We’re all Bucs Fans.

  43. PRBucFan Says:

Wait so when someone blossoms they don’t have to start from point A?

They just magically one day get deemed successful?

And BTW Glennon in his 13 games did not have the 5 game span McCown did, so no I don’t think they would compare lol.

And it was considered enough of something that many experts at the time believed it was the real deal.

Ask Chicago fans who they would have rather kept this offseason, many believe in McCown.

No worries thought converts are a common thing in Tampa lol 😉

  44. PRBucFan Says:

    IMP? Ahahahaha

  45. buc'd Up Says:

Ok. So you have to buy one of these jerseys….
    A. McCown
    B. Glennon
    C. David.

Ill go with the only one that truely has the potential to be a super star. David. I know he isn’t a qb, but it is what it is.
