McCown Was Pretty Consistent In 2013
June 3rd, 2014It helps an offense immeasurably when the quarterback plays well. Misguided Bucs fans think Akeem Spence could play quarterback and just hand the ball off and the team could win a Super Bowl.
Joe has news for these types: Woody Hayes is dead.
No, the most important player on offense is the guy who touches the ball on each play, and who calls audibles when a defense is set up to stop a specific play radioed in from the sidelines.
The stat nerds over at Pro Football Focus actually coughed up some cool QB data. They broke down each quarterback’s numbers based on first down, second down and third down.
Bucs quarterback Josh McCown, playing for the Bears, was pretty damned consistent and overall had high marks, per the spreadsheeters. On first down, McCown completed 68 percent of his passes. On second down, 69 percent. On third down, McCown’s numbers dropped a bit as he connected on 62 percent of his attempts.
The third down numbers don’t shock Joe because, unless it is short-yardage situations, defenses pretty much expect passes on third downs. Those stats are actually pretty good.
If the Bucs can get that kind of consistency from McCown, then well, maybe the Bucs offense may just scare some teams, or at least force a few defensive coordinators to lose sleep.

Or bring in some real compition ala Conor Shaw (browns) a little trade. Shaw is definitely able to make sth. happen – real cannon arm (real blastanova compared to glenon), dangerous accurate on deep ones (not like glennon), uses legs pretty well (not exactly like glennon), ability looking defenses off is my biggest concern, but hey, that for: Tedford(s-sheme).
Bring in Shaw!

this is even more impressive about McCown considering the #29 pass blocking ranking (#19 overall) PFF gave the Bears Oline. So he did not have great blocking with the Bears which is likely to also be the case with the Bucs.
June 3rd, 2014 at 8:11 am
Right behind Flacco, ahead of RGIII and Eli Manning – not bad!

June 3rd, 2014 at 8:27 am
@Macabee,
Interesting, even if #19; I’ll take him at #19 as that is a huge improvement over last year. And with an all new Oline, NFL newbie OC and QB coach and one rookie WR and TE, its probably fairly realistic. But with our D, I will happily take it.
Its also interesting they have Newton at #13. The Panthers are worth watching. Although their D should be awesome once again, I think their O is going to suck with all new WRs. Newtons stats and the Panthers record is going to take a dive this year. I predict they end up 4th in NFC South

@Harry,
“Newtons stats and the Panthers record is going to take a dive this year.”
I think and hope you are right. And the cherry on top is when things go bad for Cam, watching him sulk in his own misery is very rewarding.

A lot of ppl are going to be surprised how good mccown will do this year.barring injury glennon will not see the field.
June 3rd, 2014 at 8:44 am
Who says Spence can’t throw the ball? Maybe just maybe we have the 4th, 5th, aaaaand 6th best qbs in the division.
June 3rd, 2014 at 9:16 am
whoever starts should do well. if you can’t find a weapon to get the ball off to quickly with these weapons you don’t belong in the NFL. I hope Mccown light it up!….but if he doesn’t I know someone who knows how to read a defense, has quick release and a cannon who iswaiting patiently
June 3rd, 2014 at 9:17 am
@louden – I like the way you think. I was hoping we drafted Shaw. No luck. Wish him the best.
Everybody should take notes Joe did not mention Glennon in any way positive or negative. People keep throwing eggs at Joe in reference to putting down Glennon. I never see it as bad as people put it. But I must point this out. Is only fair.
Connor Shaw should be in Tampa…
June 3rd, 2014 at 9:22 am
In regard to the offensive line, the folks at pro football focus ranked the bears line 30th in pass blocking.
So, McCown was under lots of pressure last year, and still had his magical results.
If you look at his highlights, he was routinely avoiding the rush and throwing with guys in his face.
I’m not saying OL isn’t important, but I think we can work with what we have and be at least mediocre – with Collins and Smith – as LT and center are crucial. Both of those guys are coming off good play for playoff teams.
June 3rd, 2014 at 9:27 am
No worries – we have ‘cement shoes’ aka Mike Glennon to fall back on.
June 3rd, 2014 at 9:32 am
Good point Eric. There is no need to panic. I believe Lovie & Licht will add more linemen to compete.
The sooner our defense start playing Bucs D we will be in good odds to have a chance to win games.
Everything is right on track. Come on preseason!!!
June 3rd, 2014 at 9:35 am
No worries – we have a pocket passer who is more fleet of foot than both Manning’s, Bradee, and Flacco aka Mike Glennon to fall back on.
June 3rd, 2014 at 9:41 am
Come to think of it, Glennon has the third best 40 time in the division. Better than Matt Ryan.
June 3rd, 2014 at 9:43 am
Those jump balls to Brandon/Alshon helped his numbers, just like VJax/Evans will help bail him out. I look for ASJ to be huge this year! Go BUCS!

@ Jim – lol
Hey from what I read on comments this year we should be in good hands when MG8 starts. In JBF comments section he has been compared to:
Matt Ryan
Steve Young
Tom Brady
Joe Flacco
MGM has a vivid imagination. I’m waiting for somebody to compare him to Montana. Or maybe I missed that one….I think he will be just fine when he starts whether is here or another team. .
I feel good about McCown too.

Interesting, no article about “sleepy-leaky” Freeman. I have a funny feeling that the stuttering-stammering show host, put the kibash on such reports.

Woody Hayes is dead?
June 3rd, 2014 at 10:34 am
Confusing how stats can be used to make a case for McCown but only wins and losses count for Glennon’s performance?

I really don’t like Glennon, but seriously, Connor Shaw? He of the tiny stature, constant injuries, and popgun arm? Why would we trade for him when he will definitely be available when Browns make their final cuts?

McCown was 3-2 in 5 starts behind a terrible defense. Glennon won one more game in 8 more starts behind a much better defense.

Flip side to your argument Brandon could be McCown put up his numbers in 5 games with Marshall, Jeffreys, Martellus Bennett, and Forte…VJax was the only healthy proven commodity Glennon had for the majority of his 13 games. As you can see we can both spin the situation to fit out argument
June 3rd, 2014 at 11:59 am
Just curious as to why we still only have the 4th best QB in the division only gets thrown around when we are talking about Glennon? Is McCown better than anyone else in this division?
–LOVE LIVE THE MGM!!!

William, did you notice that both Glennon and Montana have the SAME number of letters in their last names. Coincidence?? I don’t think so!

The real flip side of his argument is this as well:
McCown was 3-2 in 5 starts AGAINST terrible defenses. Glennon won one more game in 8 more starts AGAINST much better defenses. Five of those losses came against the #1st,2nd,3rd,and 4th ranked defenses last year.

Nice link Joe.. If any of the MGM actually bothered to look in detail at those 1st, 2nd, and 3rd down QB breakdowns… Glennon is absolutely HORRIFIC on 2nd and 3rd downs.. kind of like he was in the 3rd & 4th quarters.
Hopefully a few years on the bench watching Josh McCannon will get him ready for 2017.
June 3rd, 2014 at 6:56 pm
I agree that Glennon is intelligent enough and also physically capable of excelling in this kind of offense, but McCown is a better option for us right now because he’s a little better than Glennon in virtually every aspect of the game; mentally and physically. That’s the Truth. You can accept it or deny it. You can either join the JMP or the MP (Josh McCown Posse or McCown Pessimists Aka the Major P”$$1E$) dual post, sorry

Not true.
June 4th, 2014 at 6:21 am
@Brandon: Hope youre right and he gets cut by browns – would be good chance, to get good compitition. Dont know if he is gonna make it in NFL, but he was one of my favorite QB-targets in this years draft (i assume your too?). His effectiveness would be as much an ? as Glennons (new O) – so perfect compi (and potetialy more potential with/in Shaw).
hopefully McCown and Glennon will rock. but gotta think rock-solid is the ceiling for Glenno —- anyway, best team wins SB – GoBucs
