An ESPN blogger believes banking on Josh McCown is the Bucs’ riskiest offseason move
The old saying goes, ‘if you don’t have a franchise quarterback, then you will always be looking for one.’
As much as many Bucs fans will have you believe a linebacker can play quarterback; that a quarterback is not necessary to win a Super Bowl in the 21st Century, that simply is bunk.
(Spare Joe the Russell Wilson lines. It’s not like this guy is Dieter Brock. Besides, Wilson is a damn fine quarterback).
This is why Pat Yasinskas of ESPN thinks the riskiest move the Bucs made in the offseason was banking on journeyman Josh McCown to replicate his five-game magic with the Bears last year.
Riskiest move: The Bucs quickly signed veteran quarterback Josh McCown and named him the starter. For a team that clearly is in a win-now mode, this is a risky move. McCown has been a backup most of his career and has made only 38 starts. He played well in relief of an injured Jay Cutler in Chicago last season. But there’s nothing in McCown’s track record to suggest that he can win consistently over the long haul. Coach Lovie Smith has history with McCown and is comfortable with the veteran quarterback. But the Bucs were in a position to get a potential franchise quarterback in the draft and they passed. Smith has gone out on a limb with McCown and second-year pro Mike Glennon is the only safety net.
It’s a fair assessment. From the morsels of information that have been dropped, the Bucs are going to throw the ball. The latest crumbs of evidence came from the draft — a wide receiver in the first round, a pass-catching tight end in the second around and a pass-catching back in the third round. Everything the Bucs have done suggests the Bucs will throw the ball often.
That puts a lot of pressure on a guy like McCown, or any unproven full-time starter. Can McCown show that last season was not a fluke? This will be the biggest question for the Bucs until the regular season begins, and maybe a few games into the regular season.

Yasinskas is just making print. What McCown did last year is not like a one game fluke. And to suggest that there was a franchise quarterback in the draft is far from guaranteed. Who can say at this point whether any QB in the draft is going to be better than Glennon. It’s just filling print during the off season.

JOE, you are just unwilling to give Glennon the time to develop. It seems that you and the rest of your ilk would nothing more than like to see Glennon thrown to the wolves. If we had drafted Manziel, you were ready to let him ride the pine for a year behind McCown, but since that didn’t happen all of a sudden, you Manziel/Freeman panty huggers think McCown’s not good enough. You guys want Glennon to fail so much just to prove your point. It is what it is. I’m actually starting to question your loyalty to my team. It’s McCown and Glennon, either get onboard or come across as chumps. …and JOE, see if Glennon will throw you a pass?

The Bucs have already made it known that Glennon is their QB of the future,
ergo “franchise QB” so why don’t we just wait and see how all this works out instead of replaying this same topic endlessly. Personally I think Glennon will be a good starting QB for us whether it’s this year or later.

Lovie & Licht have a plan. We have the right coaches in place to improve our QBs. I rather have McCown in place rather than 2nd year QB Glennon at starting QB. The scenario in place makes the most logical sense if they are happy with what they saw in Glennon. Obviously Glennon is lacking expereince although his no longer a rookie working on his mechanics plus learning from McCown will prove beneficial for the QB of the future. Key word FUTURE.
From what I seen so far this offseason Lovie and Light make me feel upbeat about the future. I hear Yasinskas. But the key word he used is “potential” (franchise QB.) As we know potential is not decisive. There was no Andrew Luck available.
I’m with Lovie & Licht on this decision.

People are wondering if McCown will repeat last years performance but I’m starting to wonder if we might see improvement from McCown this year. Hopefully Tedford and Arroyo can share some new light with McCown. We know Glennon will benefit greatly from these coaches but you know McCown is a sharp willing player looking to be the best he could be for this team. May be there is untapped potential in McCown.

Anyone that trust our two QB is a fool. josh has almost as may int’s as td. Mike numbers sucked last year and to this point has never done anything to show different. So until they prove them selfs there is a huge ? at QB and I think a team needs to draft one every year till you get one. I don’t wanna hear the bullshit about our WR or o line how many WR did Brady have? A ton of teams don’t have star wideouts and still get it done so no one wants to hear it

Here we go again….our draft is over….FA QB brought in and we’re still talking about the QB position…..how ’bout lets see what happens….as for risk….I see it as being riskier going with Glennon or a new rookie….there is no sure thing.
Risks have been minimized by drafting some weapons for our QB and hopefully good coaching.

I feel better with a veteran qb who has a smaller resume with some success then someone like johnny football who has no nfl experience. If Mccown can protect the football and sustain drives I think we have a shot to be a contender.

I concur Richardtyson but i really think Joe has soured alot of people on Glennon by only stating his worst numbers and not acknowledging the fact of no OL, no 2 WR etc etc. Glennon could very well be in position to take the job come season time but Lovie will probably still stick with McCown. His first yr IS guaranteed after all.

Can’t spare you the Russell Wilson line….there’s a good 15 QBs that win that Super Bowl with Seattle’s defense. Brady hasn’t won a SB in a decade and Peyton just got shut down by Seattles defense. Teams like Seattle, SF, and Carolina were in the position they were in because of their defenses giving up 12 points per game, not because of franchise QBs. Hypothetically speaking… let’s say Josh continues on the 13-1 ratio and wins 11 games. Does this make him a franchise QB or just a stop gap fill? Brady was drafted in the 6th or 7th round and surpassed all of the supposed franchise QB in that draft. This article has no merit until Josh has taken a regular season snap.

Look it up. Jerry Langton, one of the most respected sport reporters in the business came out with the NFL’s strongest passing arms. These included back up QB’s as well. Glennon was rated the 10th strongest arm in the NFL.
So Big Dog, for all your ranting and raving about how weak Glennon is, suck it! You brag about how bad Dilfer was and you saw it from the start. The guy won the Super Bowl and is now one of the best ESPN analysis on ESPN. If you are such a quaterback guru, why are you still on a local market radio show?

It’s funny when you post a response to a QB article and mention the QB in NE by name Joe’s filter flushes it down the toilet.
Drafted in the 6th or 7th round, passed on by many teams and became a franchise QB who’s won a few championships along the way while setting a few records.
I can only imagine what Joe would’ve written about this unnamed QB if he was a Buc and they passed on Johnny Football in the draft.

We did McCown a favor. He and Lovie are tight and we really didn’t have any money tied up at QB. Glennon will do McCown another favor by lighting it up in camp and allowing Josh to get that five mil on the pine.

Patently false. Joe hopes whoever is quarterback breaks every franchise record and gets the Bucs to the Super Bowl. Why is it so criminal if Joe isn’t (yet) a believer? It is not as if Joe is wanting John Elway to get benched.
No different than if Luke Stocker is the starting tight end. Joe would want him to be an All-Pro. Joe doesn’t see that happening, either. How come you don’t crucify Joe for wanting the Bucs to move on from Stocker (it appears, they have).

The only thing Glennon does well is throw the ball away when there is nothing there, and hold on to the ball when being sacked. Outside that, he is terrible. Hopefully Lovie will show him how to find the first down marker.

Tampa Bay is a Top 20 radio market and as much as you may hate it, Duemig gets ratings which means big bucks. Joe knows of no successful sports radio personality that works 80 hours a week.

Everything is risky, until it works.
Try for the franchise guy is risky, as we know all too well with Freeman. Getting a vet like McCown is risky too.
But on the risky scale, getting McCown pails in comparison to hiring a guy from the Big East to be a head coach coach in the NFL.
Now that is turbo charged risky.

Who is this “franchise Quarterback” that the Bucs passed on. McCown was the top rated QB available in Free Agency and the Bucs signed him. The consensus view of the draft was that no “franchise Quarterbacks” were available. The Bucs were not alone in passing on this mediocre group with their first pick. Now in the self serving world of bloggers and talk shoe hosts, JOHNNY was the obvious answer that was there for the taking. Johnny is a dream come true. You can praise Johnny. You can rip Johnny. You can talk about Johnny on the field. You can talk about Johnny off the field. If Johnny doesn’t play the coaches are idiots. If Johnny does play and they lose, it is because of stupid coaches, GMs or inadequate support. If he plays and wins, the ultimate redemption, I TOLD YOU SO. Bloggers dream, undoubtedly. As a rookie GM, your job is on the line. Do you build a top 5-10 defense and take the best FA QB available, who had a 13-1 TD/int last year with similar skill players? Or take a rookie QB that 20+ teams passed on and hope he pans out in a few years. Which one are you betting your job on?

Safe money = mediocre in the NFL
Calculated risks/prepared for worst = high reward
Defense and good coaching will keep us in games and the offense efficiency/potency will make the team exceptional.
Stop speaking for Lovie people – again this is stupid. Lovie chose his qb and just trust his judgement. What other recent sample do we have to use as a better model in Tampa (Raheem/Schiano?????)

Idk how people can describe it as passing on Manziel or Bridgewater when you have a franchise QB already?
Rams Falcons Bills Lions Giants Bears Steelers Cowboys Ravens Jets Dolphins Packers Eagles Chiefs Bengals all have franchise QB’s(or what they believe to be franchise QB’s) that are relatively young(Cutler Eli Ben only ones 30 and older) so why would you take a QB in the 1st round?
Are the Colts or Redskins going to draft Winston with their 1st pick next year because he might be the best player available? If you want to come up with good points then say of the teams that NEEDED a QB passed on them (Texans Jaguars Raiders Titans and to an extent Browns and Vikings with their first pick).

I have heard this phrase several times since Lovie/Licht were hired. I know that THEY have said that they want to “win now”, but of course, we know the local media sharks would eat them alive if they said they were going to build on a “five year plan”. But when you make ‘wholesale’ changes on BOTH sides of the ball, you are going to be damn lucky to be fighting for a playoff spot. ESPECIALLY, in the NFC South.
With the ‘hits’ (and misses) made in the draft and free agency, I see the Lovie/Licht plan as aiming at new heights (consistently) in 2-3 years.

I had to go back and reread the article to make sure what this was about.
On that note, I find the move the least bit risky. There are not a whole lot of teams that have back-ups with legitimate regular season starter experience. So, whether McCown starts or Glennon starts, they have a capable back-up in place.
It seems redundant to keep mentioning that rookies have zero experience and that there is no guarantee of success based on where you’re drafted. I am more comfortable with a veteran at the helm than a rookie.
I believe that they are building for the long haul and, as such, people may want to temper their enthusiasm as it pertains to this year.
