Mocking Round 2
May 9th, 2014How about another mock draft, just in case you didn’t get your fill.
This one, however, is a second-round mock, and the Bucs are on the clock in roughly three hours. NFL Network draft guru Bucky Brooks weighs in and seems to be thinking like Joe.
33. Houston Texans: Carlos Hyde, Ohio State, RB
If the Texans make the move for Ryan Mallet, the team can set its sights on adding a running mate for Arian Foster.
34. Washington Redskins: Morgan Moses, Virginia, OT
Jay Gruden must get RG3 back on track. Beefing up the offensive line is a good start.35. Cleveland Browns: Marqise Lee, USC, WR
After bypassing Sammy Watkins on Day 1, GM Ray Farmer grabs one of the most electrifying playmakers in college football near the top of the second round.36. Oakland Raiders: Derek Carr, Fresno State, QB
Dennis Allen is reportedly smitten by Carr’s arm talent and moxie. Could be a terrific get at this point of the draft.37. Atlanta Falcons: Jace Amaro, Texas Tech, TE
The Falcons need a pass rusher, but adding a dynamic tight end is also a priority after Tony Gonzalez’s retirement.38: Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Xavier Su’a-Filo, UCLA, OG
Su’a Filo’s physicality and toughness makes him a perfect fit in the Buccaneers’ revamped offense.
Barring an emotional breakup of Lovie Smith and Mike Glennon, Joe suspects the Bucs will go O-line in the second round. Earlier, Joe wrote about tough guy tackle/guard Joel Bitonio of Nevada.
Su’a-Filo (6-4, 308) is an attractive choice, too. His preferred position is left guard. Interestingly, he took a couple years off after his freshman year to go on a church mission. That probably scores a couple of points with Lovie Smith.
Su’a-Filo also is very high on Shaun King’s list of preferred Bucs in the second round, per King’s comments today on the Ron and Ian show on WDAE-AM 620.

I think he’d be a good pickup. Hopefully we have Nicks and he can handle the right guard spot. I’m pretty sure he’d be an upgrade over Meredith.

Su’a-Filo or Bitonio would be good selections. We seriously need to come away from this draft with a starting guard. Not a guard…a STARTING guard. A guy who steps in immediately and provides a boost to this offensive line.
May 9th, 2014 at 4:45 pm
God I hope he’s still there….we may have to trade up for him (worth it to me)
Btw, while watching the Jags war room, GM on the phone with Bortles, and it seems he asked them “was there ever any doubt”…that right there is what I love about the kid! He’ll be good in the NFL, but I hope we sack him plenty when we play him.
May 9th, 2014 at 4:46 pm
Joel Bitonio will be there if Xavier Su’a-Filo isn’t….lets not get crazy with this pick…..
I could see us selecting another WR here & would be OK with that.
No surprises please!!!

Gotta be a guard, though if Lee falls the thought of a Jackson/Evans/Lee trifecta is rather tempting…but the QB has to be able to throw them the ball first of course.
May 9th, 2014 at 4:57 pm
I also predict either Su’a-Filo or Bitonio; but man, if Lee is there we can’t pass that up, right?? He would be so perfect with VJ and Evans and Wright at TE.
I am very surprised Brooks does not have the Texans taking Carr.
May 9th, 2014 at 4:57 pm
My guess for the remainder of the draft….don’t think we take a QB….Round 2…Austin Sefarian Jenkins-TE, Round 3…Gabe Jackson-OG, Round 4…N/A, Round 5…Travis Swanson-C/G, Round 6…Jeff Janis-WR, Round 7…Kevin Pierre-Louis-OLB.
May 9th, 2014 at 5:04 pm
I think prob Oline or WR too. They sure are doing a great job of keeping us guessing…lol
May 9th, 2014 at 5:10 pm
If a starter at guard is there, you pick him. No question.
May 9th, 2014 at 5:18 pm
Taking a couple years off also means less wear and tear on his body.
May 9th, 2014 at 5:19 pm
Lattimer would also be a nice addition. You can find gems on the o line late in the draft. This can also be said for receiver but wr is so hit or miss. Big beefy guards can be had in later rounds
May 9th, 2014 at 5:20 pm
If we don’t pick one of the two guards I’d be happy with a DT.
May 9th, 2014 at 5:23 pm
If the texans don’t take Carr, I am 100% for trading up with the browns for him.
May 9th, 2014 at 5:33 pm
O-Line next…keep whoever is throwing the deep ball to VJax or Evans from getting pasted to the turf. Again for the QB dreamers there are more pressing needs this year. If the Bucs look at the tape after this season and feel they need to upgrade the position they’ll do it then

@Joe
In the case of If we draft Su’a-Filo-Hopefully Christians & Mormons-Can get along (Not always the case). IMO LT/G Joe Bitonio is the versatile pick(Can play any position on the line)-extremely technical. I’m not just saying this because he was coached up (initially) by Cameron Norcross.
But thinking outside of the box
What if they draft-the 6’7 TE Troy Niklas?

@Buccaneer Bonzai
Still tryna live the dream huh bro? lol
May 9th, 2014 at 5:42 pm
Guard is a glaring hole. No guards no running game.
May 9th, 2014 at 5:44 pm
It’d be nice if we could get’em both (Su’a-Filo & Bitonio)…Then we could just let our O-line maul opposing defenses into submission every week…thanks to the addition of Mike Evans teams wont be able to drop an 8th man in the box to stop our running game; look for Doug Martin & Co to go HaM! this season…
May 9th, 2014 at 5:52 pm
Sounding like a trade down is also in the mix. Wouldn’t be disappointed with that either.
May 9th, 2014 at 6:05 pm
Go Bucs!
May 9th, 2014 at 6:10 pm
If anything we should be trading up….not back….I smell smokescreen 😉
May 9th, 2014 at 6:11 pm
and if we dont go O line, then go after Lee!
May 9th, 2014 at 6:18 pm
Oh SNAP, Josh Gordon could be suspended for failing a drug test!!!
Can we just make Mary Jane legal in all states (and I havent hit it in 15 years)
May 9th, 2014 at 6:19 pm
Agree Couch, it would be great to move back a few in Rnd2 and pick up a 4th in the process. Still could probably get a good OG and even use the 4th for a luxury pick to soothe the masses (like a Murray or other day 3 QB). Why burn a 2nd Rnd pick on a QB who will sit longer than Lovie has time to win or be fired?
May 9th, 2014 at 6:20 pm
Lol there goes Johnny’s best receiver. Browns might wanna trade up for Lee.
May 9th, 2014 at 6:37 pm
Su’a-Filo went on an LDS Mormon mission, most hardcore Christians don’t view Mormons the same as they view themselves. They see it as a negative. I don’t think this will score points with Smith, nor will being slightly over-aged.
May 9th, 2014 at 6:42 pm
@Brandon
That was my thinking as well
May 9th, 2014 at 6:47 pm
Point is he went on a mission to serve and help people….if that isnt good enough for ANY religion, then it further confirms my reasons to stay away from religions period!
May 9th, 2014 at 6:53 pm
@MadMax
It amazes me that it would be a conflict of interest by any means.
May 9th, 2014 at 7:22 pm
And he’s gone
May 9th, 2014 at 7:24 pm
And so is joes pick
