Lovie: Three Quarterbacks Unneccessary

Lovie Smith explains his big-receivers philosophy, how the Bucs’ talent stacks up, his QB philosophy, and more.
Lovie went deep into his draft-day mindset and decisions this morning on WDAE-AM 620. Of course, the subject of quarterback came up, and it spelled doom for the burgeoning Brett Smith cheerleading section, and reinforced the Mike Glennon Mob euphoria.
“I just don’t think you need three good quarterbacks on the roster,” Lovie said.
“I made it clear right away that Josh McCown is our starter, which he is. And hopefully for quite a few years he will be. And I said I really like Mike Glennon. Mike’s a young player coming up. In an ideal situation you don’t want young players to have to come in and start right away, you want them to be around an established veteran,” Lovie continued
“This is the best situation for Mike Glennon to be in. He is our quarterback of the future. He’ll play, you know, for us some day and he’ll play good football. But there’s a progression you have to go through.”
Lovie went on to say McCown, Gerald McCoy and Lavonte David all have to win their starting jobs, so nothing is etched in stone in May.

On third-round pick, running back Charles Sims: We like the potential of Charles. We thought he brought something different to the running back position. And I’m talking about as a pass catcher in the backfield and splitting him out wide. … As long as you have different flavors to your running backs, there’s a place for all of those guys to be able to play.
On big receivers and tight ends: The average defensive back in the league is 5-10, 5-10 1/2. So you do have an advantage when you can have two receivers over 6-5 and a tight end over 6-6, whatever. And not just the red zone. … And then if you have great players like that with great vertical [leaps] … that is a weapon. Chicago did have success with it last year, and of course Josh knows how to throw the ball to big receivers.

With the league making it harder to hit defenseless receivers it makes sense to have the tall guys stretch out to catch passes. Like the move in current flag football rules that handcuff hard hitting safeties

Maybe Brett Smith beats out Kafka in camp and gets a practice squad spot for now until McCown retires? Then Smith would be able to take over as MG’s backup

I know what Lovie says but I also know Lovie is too smart to not remember back a very short few years ago when Cutler got hurt, Todd Collins got hurt or was ineffective, and Caleb Hannie, the 3rd QB had to come into the game. It was the playoffs…and Lovie says he doesn’t need 3 QBs on the roster.

They way I see it:
– Brett Smith takes PS spot over Kafka.
– Glennon is #2 and continues to develop/learn.
– When McCown moves on, Bucs take a view on the progression of both Glennon and Smith, and make a decision from there.

About the McCown statement, Lovie also added/said that’s how HE thought it would play out heading into the season. But, there is completion at all positions.

Kafka’s been in the league too long to be practice squad eligible, so there’s no competition with Brett Smith for that. Not sure why that even came up.

Two things that worry me about MG. No mobility & looks very fragile. Reminds me a little bit of Icabod Crane.
