Lovie & Staff Embrace Steve White
May 21st, 2014Hours after taking the Buccaneers head coaching gig, Lovie Smith said he was eager to get former Glory Days Bucs into the mix of his regime. They’d be welcome with open arms to mingle, mentor, or motivate, Lovie said.
Well, Lovie was true to his word.
Former Bucs defensive end Steve White (1996-2001), former author of the renowned “Bull Rush” column on JoeBucsFan.com, is now a coaching intern on Lovie’s staff. Of course, White’s focus is on the defensive line.
White is not new to coaching, having served on Jim Leavitt’s staff at South Florida.
Like Bucs defensive line coach Joe Cullen, White learned for years under Rod Marinelli, Lovie’s close friend and former Bears defensive coordinator, and the renowned D-line guru of the Bucs’ glory days.
Getting to know White personally over the years, Joe couldn’t be happier for White and the Bucs. Joe’s not sure he’s ever met a more devoted student of the game — who wasn’t actually employed in football. A devoted Bucs fan and local resident, White has reached out, at times over the years, to Bucs defensive linemen to offer his guidance free of charge. Joe won’t get into specifics, but White has gotten opportunities to share his wisdom.
Joe remembers White, on these here pages many years ago, documented why Michael Bennett had all the makings of a future superstar and should have been a starter in 2010, and White called for Bennett to get a contract extension before his breakout season of 2012. White’s been keeping busy in various sports media of late, but now he’s back in the game.
Again, White is a coaching intern. Those positions are very temporary, but Joe has a hunch White will make the most of the opportunity.
Good luck, Steve! And listen up, DaQuan!

This is fantastic. Steve has always had good insight and evaluation in the game. A true student, and now teacher, of the game. Good luck Steve, I hope this serves you well moving forward to future endeavors (although I would hate to lose your insight during the season via articles posted online, hope that continues)…

I too I remember White singing the praises of Bennett. Too bad no one listened. White always struck me as extremely insightful and should help the team in both teaching and talent evaluation.

Wow! It keeps getting Better!
Steve White is tremendous addition to the staff- in any capacity.
This man is a defensive line genius, and a Buccaneer thru and thru.
This should of happened a long time ago.
Welcome Back, Mr.White. It’s an honor to have you working in OneBuc Place!

I know I am not alone when I say this, but this is long overdue. I always listen attentively when white is speaking on the radio. He has to be the most knowledgeble analyst in this area as it goes for X’s and O’s. He truly is a student. Ian Beckles can learn a lot from white!! Congrats Steve!!!

When did he change his name back to Steve?! I’m kidding! Congrats Steve. Help us mold this group of d-linemen into lunatic QB killas.

Congrat Steve. He’s a very informative guy when it comes to football. I’m sure his input would be helpful.

@ColoradoBuc – Joe tests the site multiple times daily via various sources and has not fielded any other complaints this week. Must be something on your end. Sorry. –Joe

Great move by Lovie, and surely a crowd pleaser!

This is probably a gift from Lovie to White for helping ouster the last coaching regime. White was one of the media who started pounding the drums early to run the coaching staff out of town. He was writing about it as early as August and was in full steam by October. Next we will see Booger McFarland get a seat at the table for his excellent work in helping get the previous regime fired.

This is something White surely deserves. Hopefully he impresses Lovie and the staff enough to earn a paying gig.

Glad to see him in board! Too bad we don’t have any one of the same caliber to come in and help with the O-Line other than Coach Warhop.
