Draft Happenings Slapped Schiano Coaching

May 10th, 2014
"Just coach'em up, Greg. Enough with the linguini length."

“Just coach’em up, Greg. Enough with the linguini length.”

As it stands now after free agency and three rounds of the 2014 NFL Draft (the Bucs have no fourth-round pick), Tampa Bay likely will have only three new starters on defense: Alterraun Verner, Clinton McDonald and Michael Johnson.

That’s the equivalent of Lovie Smith grabbing a bullhorn and telling the world Greg Schiano didn’t know how to coach defense.

It’s pretty darn stunning.

A new defensive-minded coach comes in and only swaps out three starters? There was no top-10 Bucs defense last season. They were below average, at best.

Take it a step further; of Lovie’s nine years in Chicago, in eight of those years Lovie’s teams drafted defensive linemen with early picks.

Not this year.

Warren Sapp got in Joe’s face a bit at Super Bowl media day, telling Joe that the Bucs defense as it was on that day was just fine. DaQuan Bowers would be fine, Sapp said. Same for Adrian Clayborn. It was simply the system and coaching that was completely out of whack, Sapp said.

It seems Lovie was on the same page.

  2. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Gosh, that means that maybe, just maybe, the Rockstar was not to blame, it was the coaching all along ?

  3. DCBUCSFAN Says:

It didn’t take a draft to tell Schiano couldn’t coach!

  4. You go Joe Says:

Also giving away picks at second year. Love did a 180 on this team in one off season!!

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I don’t know about you guys…but I went nuts when I heard the Sims pick but then I watched his highlights…..this guy can burn it!!! He has some hands and some great moves…I am now excited about the pick.
There are probably some things we don’t know…..like Mike James’ health…possible trade offers for Rainey or James….the health of Nicks making OG less important.
And…most importantly….how Sims will be used in the Tedford offense vs the skillset of the other RBs….
I think our offense is much improved.

  6. Greg Says:

Sims is our Percy Harvin, his highlight reel was awesome!

  7. Max Says:

that revis deal is like losing a first round pick for nothing, really set us back

  8. Patrick McV Says:

You are your best when you are a reporter . Think about it

  9. gatrbuc17 Says:

Joe said he would bet a Bunch of money that the Bucs grab a QB and that he would be Absolutely Shocked if they didnt.
I still luv ya though Joe. Some of us told you so and you said we were dull at parties. ……………..lol

  10. gatrbuc17 Says:

Damn……some other Bucs fans are awake??? Cool

  11. williethewonder Says:

The Seattle model is to use early draft picks on offense and coach up the mid to late round defensive picks.

  12. al121976 Says:

I truly am confused. I guess that’s why I don’t make the big BUCS (pun intended) but damn, why stock up in talent that we already have that is serviceable? Asj? Tim wright did great, we could have used that pick on someone of more use. The Same could be said with our 3 pick. I understand the bpa, but c’mon, we need quality depth at much needed “other positions”

  13. williethewonder Says:

Drafting for need is why bad teams remain bad teams. The truly great teams are constantly stockpiling talent, regardless of need.

  14. Celly Says:

There’s still 3 more rounds. Plenty of time to sell get a QB.

    Aaron Murray

  15. Greg Says:

@ Willie, you are correct, the Bucs are going BPA for the areas they need to upgrade their attack (along the Seattle model). I’m starting to believe we can have a really good team within a year, probably not a championship team yet, but following the draft blueprint of the winning teams vice the perineal losers at the top of the draft is what is going to put us on the road to relevance again!

  16. Newschoolbucsfan Says:

Everyone who ever went to a Greg goodfellas game seen how he never made in game changes. The stunts they did on d line looked like elementary school square dancing.I had high hopes for this new GM,But I see he is awful, just awful at trades and with the draft. In my opinion,Unless he grows up fast,Mike evens I feel will be a big bust.I hope not but I think so.I mean he has the tools to be a dominant reciever,But after the team drafted him,I did research to see what type of player we had gotten in a draft deep with recievers. And in my mind he isnt smart or mature. He signed with cash money to represent him.lol.shakes my head…so we traded mike williams, for another mke williams???? Then in the third, getting a back when we are deep with backs???I sure hope Coach Smith can coach much better than they can pick players….we replaced one Bad GM for another.

  17. williethewonder Says:

Pointless to try to explain it to this last guy, new school, as it’s all obviously setec astronomy to him

  18. Greg Says:

Alright boys, between the beer and the painkillers, time for bed, see you tomorrow!

  19. MadMax Says:

Jenkins was the BEST blocking/pass catching TE period! We needed that and its a huge upgrade…and its not a knock against Timmy, but Timmy isnt as big.

And Sims is the poor man’s Watkins

and Evans? Shoot, I dont even need to say anything there.

Im predicting it NOW…PLAYOFFS BABY!! YUP!

  20. williethewonder Says:

Quite right. After all, that toothie needs rest.

  21. Newschoolbucsfan Says:

I uderstand.what YOU dont seem to understad is that Tampa bay s a port city(I actually call ita town because I have seen burroughsbigger than tampa. The party scene for the players, well Josh Freeman can allegedly tell you about it. We traded a productive player for alleged off the field behavior. But that player can produce and has proven to produce.I dont think the player we drated isnt gifted or has a high ceiling,I think he probably does. But his decisionaking so far,in my oinion not fact but my thoughts are….he will be the next kellen winslow/josh freeman/talib/ish meltdown.I hope im wrong, but hes young, star struck, and in a town known for its…clubs.I think ot or og would have been the safer pick.

  22. Newschoolbucsfan Says:

I do hope I am wrong however, because i wuld love for the bucs to o deep in the playoffs in Coach Smith’s first year.

  23. Milenko Says:

Not meaning to call anyone out. The Glazers didn’t like your resume’s. They went with L&L. You know pro’s. If they fail at the end of the season, they are still better then you. Let them do their jobs, be happy we have another chance with a proven coach in the past. Stop being so critical, when they are still un-defeated. Let’s have them do work with our new players and staff, before we start with new billboards about firing them.

  24. L&L Buc Says:

Pin and mike club not getting worship (you will say respect). L&L just not intimidation from anyone effect their draft choices. I can not wait to see who is added tomorrow. OH YA, Glennon is not traded yet No new quarterback.

  25. D-Rome Says:

I tell you what, between some local sports radio hosts and other “journalists” around here it seems they’ve gone full retard when it comes to the Bucs passing on QBs in the draft especially Johnny Manziel. I’m pleased with all the picks the Bucs have made. The Bucs had a ton of problems last year and the QB position really was low on that list of problems.

  26. Greig Says:

Ah, the old myth that Lovies defense in Chicago was consistently great.
NEWSFLASH, it wasn’t it only looked that back because their offense stank so much and without a real QB or any starting level guards I don’t think our offense is going to look very good either this year playing “Lovieball.”
His average defensive rankings while in Chicago were 10th for points and 14th for yards, not exactly what you would expect from a defensive “mastermind.”
Much like his playoff success it looks better because of the 1st 3 years success, during the last 6 years where they missed the playoffs 5 times those rankings drop to 12th for points and 16th for yards, very average numbers. He basically had 4 good years and then a bunch of average at best.
Compare that with the Steelers over the same 9 year period, 4th & 3rd rankings.
People have been sold a bill of goods with Lovie big time.

  27. Tank4Jameis Says:

    @MadMax
Love your enthusiasm. Would prefer Jenkins to Ebron as well as a total package. A little concerned though after going on to the UW SB nation site and reading their comments. We’ll see. But bro, I watched only one game of UWV this year, and didn’t remember Sims. Hope he’s good but comparing him to Watkins at this point in time is foolish. I remember the first game I saw Watkins play three years ago…Hope I’m wrong

  28. ToesOnTheLine Says:

That’s the equivalent of Lovie Smith grabbing a bullhorn and telling the world Greg Schiano didn’t know how to coach

Or Lovie watched NFL Network and realized Schiano knows talent, so might as well roll with the guys he drafted (which was mainly defense). See we can all draw crazy conclusions from what Lovie does, kind of like assuming he thought Glennon wasn’t in his plans as soon as McCown was signed.

  29. mark2001 Says:

Willie…exactly…the Packers have one of the best passing games in the league…and what did they draft in the second round? A receiver.

  30. BranonBucsFan Says:

It’s clear that no one, NO ONE, knows what the Bucs blueprint looks like, so it’s like evaluating parts for finished product that we don’t know what it is. Yeah, lack of O line picks gets my attention but we also don’t know FA Round 2 plans are or what this group of coaches has seen in the short time they’ve been here. Don’t forget, bad coaching like the last two years will make good players perform lower than their capabilities. Sure, be puzzled bout the picks and ask “why,” but only a fool judges the picks without knowing what the blueprint is.

  31. Thomas Says:

I still hope they trade Glennon and get a Qb in this draft, but I doubt it will happen now.

  32. Ted Says:

@D-Rome: QB was a problem last year. Even after the Freeman circus ended and Glennon was anointed, we had problems. This is my biggest issue with Glennon and his supporters; none of you seem to realize that he didn’t take over the game in one of his 13 starts. He had a decent rookie year, but not once did he really put us over with his ability to throw the ball. What I mean is, he missed opportunities for a 3rd or even 3rd and 4th TD pass. When your offense puts up 4 scores you’re going to win a lot of games. But Glennon missed those chances (even though it wasn’t always all his fault) and that’s why I’m concerned. In 13 starts he didn’t once put the team on his back and will is to victory. He’s solid, not spectacular. And I’ll feel that way until he proves otherwise. Even everyone’s favorite punching bag Josh Freeman showed that ability from time to time. Mike Glannon has not. And he’s supposed to lose his job to a career backup/journeyman? If he can’t beat out McCown, how can he possibly be the QB if the future?

  33. canabuc Says:

Let’s not forget that Lovie brought in 1 New cb 1 new safety one new lb as well as Johnson and McDonald. SO likely we have between draft and Free agency about 50% roster churn

  34. Ra'Shad Says:

    @newschoolbucsfan

What does signing with cash money have to do with anything? It is no different than signing with Sean Carter (Jay-z). Cash Money is more than rappers. The owner started the label with his own money in the late 90’s and he is a successful businessman. He’s actually smarter than people give him credit for and he’s rarely seen because he handles the majority of the business himself. So because Evans has Cash Money representing him doesn’t make immature or not smart. Quit hating and let the team and that man be..

  35. Kevin Says:

I been saying this all along. We are fine on defense. I’m sure they grab some depth for it somewhere today but it was the coaching…..just watch when it counts the results will be there

  36. Bk Says:

Wow. New school sentence writing is an art. I don’t see a future for you at joebucsfan.com

Anyone who tries to compare the bucs to the bears is a moron. Stop it with that nonsense. Comparing what Lovie did there is to his tenure here that hasn’t started yet is futile. It’s much like trying to predict the Super Bowl winner for next year.

  37. Bk Says:

I would encourage everyone to wait until week 9 prior to making any team assessments. Nobody has a clue what they will do or how they will perform including me.

  38. pete Says:

L & L drafted last night like parents of hungry children who buy a big screen TV!

  39. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Looks like Lovie has restrained himself from drafting defensive players…..good…the offense needed lots of help and is getting it. We have gotten considerably better.
Think about the Sims pick…Leonard was OK on third down….but watch this guy’s reel….he is explosive.
We finally have a real TE….a beast!!!
And…while I wanted Sammy @ 7…..who can complain about ME?….We will be rally tough to match up.
Yes the offense got much better.
For all the whiniers out there…..How do you know how our “stable” of RBs fits into the Tedford offense?…..I think we just got the answer with the Sims pick!!!

  40. Bobby M. Says:

Here’s the facts…..Schianos guys stayed on the roster because they are productive and professional……The Rockstars, not so much.

Schiano will learn and likely will get another shot similar to Pete Carroll because it’s well documented he knows talent. Dominik….again, not so much. There was nothing he did correctly as a GM…..Well except feed the local media boards to keep the focus off of him with the fan base.

  41. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Schiano knows talent but didn’t know how to coach it. I think Lovie knows how to coach it. Hopefully, Licht knows talent.
They made a huge gamble (didn’t need to take) by picking Sims. The entire fanbase will be watching what happens next….how will that pick look if we get a draft pick for Rainey or James? How will it look if Sims performs far better than Leonard on third downs?
I think they knwe exactly what they were doing…..

  42. buc4lyfe Says:

That’s not news Joe that was obvious as soon as he got here, obvious schiano was below average even little kids knew that, the coach/gm tandem was worse than that Cleveland crew that got fired after one season

  43. Josh P Says:

    @Bobby M

Is that based on all that talet he couldn’t win with at Rutgers also?? So maybe greg needs to be a GM instead of a coach because he sure as hell can’t win with all that talent he knows. He’s a bum!!!

  44. The_Buc_Realist Says:

I remember the day after Coach Schiano was fired that this defense only needed a piece or 2 and it would be a very good defense. Looks like Schiano was right again.

And the caption should have read ” Its going to take a couple of years to fix the mess you made rock star!”

    #rockstar + rah = drunkeneers

  45. Brandon Says:

Joe- Did you see this New England Patriots leaked scouting report of Johnny Manziel?

    http://www.brobible.com/sports/article/johnny-manziel-scoutin-report-new-england-patriots/

If this is true then my suspicions were right. I still think he can play and could succeed.

  46. Brandon Says:

I get the Sims pick. We’ve got Martin, Rainey, James, and Smith… 4 very similar running styles and body-types. Sims brings a little more athleticism and versatility (and height) to the position.

  47. Bucfan#37 Says:

Schiano’s style of of coaching did’nt work for the Bucs. He did’nt like Freeman as QB material. He was spot on in that judgement. When Glennon was drafted, that was a blow to Freeman’s fragile ego, he melted down and folded like a soggy newspaper. On the draft, Tedford got the offensive playmakers that he wanted. So far, I like the talent drafted. Go Bucs!

    ========================

No, Schiano had no eye for offensive talent. He was a major cause of Freeman’s meltdown and he didn’t seem to mind doing it. He hit on a few picks defensively… but still let Bennett walk, drafted an overrated, overhyped S in the top 10 (a known draft “don’t”) with other much better defenders on the board. At this point, he probably got lucky with Martin and David. What else do we have to show for him? Frankly, he’s an egomaniac that was a complete fool when it came to X’s and O’s… the anti-Bill Walsh.

  50. Josh P Says:

So here is the talent Mr. Schiano drafted.

    Barron – Martin – LVD – Goode – Tandy – Smith, M – Dunsmore – Banks – Glennon – Spence – Gholston – Means -James.

LVD is the only one that he hit a homerun on….

  51. johnnytheMOON Says:

Dominc was Horrible ..could you imagine in 4 years that the guys we draft this year will all be gone , as with the 2009 draft all gone by 2013 ..Please never defend that guy …

    @Bobby

“there are no starving people in this country other than by choice”

What an ignorant comment!!! You and Donald Sterling go to dinner last night?

  53. Josh P Says:

    @Brandon^^^

  54. Jim Walker Says:

Chasing your tail drafting is no way to draft either. The only reason Evans is a Buc is because of the decision to dump Williams. That is drafting for need, not the best player.

  55. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Jim Walker

In your opinion….who was the best player @ 7 if it wasn’t Evans?

  56. Andrew 1 Says:

Charles Sims = Matt Forte. Same running style, and every bit the receiver Forte is. At first I thought we drafted him with the idea of moving him to slot receiver, but now I think Lovie drafted him fully intent on finding his next Matt Forte. Seems more like a luxury pick considering we already have a damn good RB, but if he does turn out to be Forte then it was a good pick.

  57. Kingpin Says:

I’m loving this draft far! All I hear is how bad our offense was last year! We’ll hear you go change is coming on offense. New WR, Te, & RB. This will help out our future QB MG8!! Joe I guess you can say that Lovie has joined the Mike Glennon Mob! There is always room for you Joe!!!

  58. Andrew 1 Says:

I also dont think Doug Martin is in any danger of leaving for the time being because Sims will be probably be used more as a 3rd down back to start his career. Still think we could have gotten better “value” as Licht Likes to put it, with that third pick, but like i said if he turns into Forte then it was well worth it.

  59. ToesOnTheLine Says:

    @ Josh P

Um rookie QB last year (Glennon), best rookie RB two seasons ago (Martin), 6th round safety (Tandy) graded better than Goldston. Hate Schiano the coach all you want, but his draft skills are not luck or a fluke. Dude knows how to evaluate talent in the draft

  60. theoretical Says:

I disagree with the premise for a number of reasons. Schiano made a horrible defense much better. Turning around a very bad run defense in year one and then completely rebuilding the secondary in the second year. We had more pass rush and INTs last year than we’ve had in years. So, Schiano and MD got a lot of talent on the D before Lovie got here. Our D held up well in Schiano’s scheme but our O didn’t pull the weight (largely due to injuries and Freeman’s implosion) which meant our D’s stats looked worse than it was. I loved watching our D play – particularly the first half the year.

But I also think there’s likely more turn over than you think. I’m pretty sure there will be a new nickel, which is a “starter”, right? There’s also a possibility that there’s a shake up at LB. And the draft isn’t over! As many as 5 new starters on D? That’s quite a bit of turn over for one year given how much had to be spent fixing the Offense.

  61. lightningbuc Says:

This draft is panning out just like Joe predicted:

    Trade Glennon – check
    Draft “franchise QB” – check
    Draft O-Line – check
Don’t draft a WR to later rounds cuz draft is deep with ’em – check

    JOE KNOWS DRAFTS

Make sure you remember Joe’s priorities from this draft. Thanks for the reminder. Also remember Joe talking about Doug Martin’s questionable future, as well as Joe writing about Revis getting the boot hours after Lovie was hired.–Joe

    We could still trade Glennon
We could still pick a Francise QB Rounds 5-7
We could still draft 0line 5-7

  68. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Schiano: great talent evaluator, bad NFL coach.

Dominik: great salary cap guy, poor talent evaluator.

With two guys like that heading an organization you can’t help but go wrong.

  69. Harry Says:

After sleeping on it, I have come around to being excited about the ASJ pick. My only reservation was we took a player for a position we did not have a need for, AND we have some serious needs. With what we have on the roster, it appears we won’t run a lot of 3 WR sets but maybe instead we go with a lot of double tight end sets – I’m cool with that. What I like about all the draft picks so far is they are said to have great hands – just get the ball close to them and they will catch it.

Charles Sims: Although, as I said I like the ASJ pick, I hate this one. Nothing against Sims, but we absolutely did not need him. The Bucs needed a freaking OG. THAT is the position that makes the run game work. Yea, we can pick up another teams cast offs when they are cut to make room for new draft picks, but to take a RB in the top 70 picks is crazy. Are you telling me we could not have done better with another OG? WR? DE? DT? This was a stupid pick. Go drink more Kool-Aid

  70. Josh P Says:

    @ToesOnTheLine

Really Glennon? So he was the best rookie QB in class that was probably one of the worst in the past 25 years. Aweful deep pass, ranked 37th in yards per attempt. 37th, there are only 32 teams, you do the math. Lets not talk about his mobility..

Martin – Yes great rookie season, last year he was only averaging 75 yards a game to go along with 3.6 yards per carry. This all prior to his injury. Slow down on Martin, the jury is still out on the this kid.

Tandy – He is a good player, he’s not going to be an every down safety in this league.

Maybe the Bucs should have promoted (???) Schiano to GM or director of player personnel. I don’t know how anyone can say he doesn’t know talent, I think in a few years the 2012 and 2013 drafts are going to look terrific. He just isn’t a very good coach in terms of game planning and in game adjustments. But great talent judge, he had to be to make Rutgers relevant combing over the big program’s scraps.

Joe, Just giving you some sarcastic crap. I’d be lying if I said I, too, wasn’t surprised about the 2nd and 3rd picks. No one could have predicted that! Have to be an O-lineman sometime today.

    “Go drink more Kool-Aid”

Drinking koolaid is thinking Dominik would get fired here and go elsewhere and be a real rockstar.

  75. Josh P Says:

Please stop with the rutgers relavent comments. 68-67, 0 conference championships in the Big East/American is not relavent. If he had that record in the SEC, PAC 16, ACC he would have been fired…

  76. bucrightoff Says:

And once again, can people please apply context to Rutgers being relevant? They were, at best, one of the 3 worst programs in America when Schiano got there. They have a terrible recruiting location (the heart of basketball country, the NYC-Philly corridor), and again are combing over the scraps bigger programs

Did he make them a national title contender? No. He did get them into the top 10, which is a borderline miracle. And he got them invited to the Big Ten, which would not have happened if they were still a bottom 3 program. Nobody is saying great coach, but he did build up a horrible program basically from the ground up. Credit where it is due, I know some people think Schiano kicks puppies in his spare time but he’s not a bad dude, just a crappy coach.

  77. JBuc Says:

Hey Harry, much harder to get physically gifted freakish skill players than it is to find big guards that can block. We currently have gaurs and they will pick up more but I’d pick Jimmy Graham all day over any offensive lineman. You can compensate for line deficiencies in a lot of ways. There is no way to compensate for a lack of talent as we have seen with the Bucs in the past.

  78. Couch Fan Says:

Please stop telling us what we need and don’t need. Considering nobody knows what kind of offense we will run, the only ones who know what we “need” are the ones making the selections. I promise none of you know better than them as to what we need. Let’s try being more of a fan and less of a hateful couch GM.

  79. Back, from Davie Jones Locker Says:

I’m loving this Draft. We are drafting A Wr corp, and TE corp- that combined create a major mismatch. With Jackson, Evans,Jenkins, and Wright- you have 4 Recievers at 6’5″. There aren’t any 6’5″ defensive backs.

Then they draft Sims. That pick confused me at first. Then I reviewed a lot of his tape.
He was drafted to be a recieving threat. Our backs are great runners. None were great recieving threats.

Tedford’s offense may be a mystery, but this much has become crystal clear.
He intends to throw. A lot.

This draft proves it. I’m really excited about that

  80. Back, from Davie Jones Locker Says:

Like everyone- I’m concerned about the line.
    But
What do Roman Oben, Kerry Jenkins, and Jeff Christy have in common?
They were 3 of our 5 Super Bowl starting linemen. Also all 3 were not drafted by the Bucs. They were all 3 signed via free agency or Trade.

We can’t plug all the holes on this team with one draft

  81. James Says:

FYI for everyone ready to jump off the skyway because we didn’t pick O-line in third. Some guy named Carl Nicks was originally a 5th round pick. Donald Penn – undrafted free agent, Evan Dietrich-Smith – undrafted free agent, Demar Dotson, – undrafted free agent, Anthony Collins-fourth round.

  82. Josh P Says:

Yeah the fact that Miami, VT, and Boston College leaving the Conference didn’t have anything to do with helping them add a few more victories a season. UM and VT left in 04 then BC on 05. Then Schiono started having success. He was 0-10 vs those 3 schools from 01-04.

  83. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Josh P is obviously on the Schiano hate wagon, so no sense in trying to reason or use any logic on the matter of Schiano. I’ll sum it up for him though very good draft guy, good coach not ready for NFL yet, lightning rod for media hate starting with victory formation play and hated by Freemanites worldwide. Agree with the poster that said he would have been better as a GM/personnel guy

  84. James Says:

    @ToesOnTheLine

    Well said ^

  85. Josh P Says:

Once again show me where he was a successful college coach? Who was better Levit or Schiano in college?? and once again the only player that was drafted during his time here that you can for sure say is going to have a successful career barring an injury is LVD. You can’t even say Martin is going have a successful career. One good season does not constatute a for sure thing. I hope he does but i wouldn’t bet any money on it. Not in this pass happy league now.

  86. Josh P Says:

For a guy you all think is such a great judge of talent then why doesn’t he have a job in either college or NFL??

Why coach when you can be paid $3.5 million for the next couple years not to? DUH!

  88. Josh P Says:

Because he can get pain $5+ million to coach or as some of you think he could be a GM. You guys are rediculous if you can honesly say he was a good judge of talent. Other than LVD and ill give you Martin, what did he bring in that was so great??

  89. Josh P Says:

@lightningbuc not to sure where you came up with your $3.5 million dollar figure either..

  90. Red86 Says:

    I can’t believe my eyes.

Anyway I agree that a big reason Schiano isn’t a Bucs coach. He just didn’t use his guy that well. His coaching was horrible with the many 2nd & 3rd and 20 runs. His constant stunt that was like 10 out 1000 success rate. The many first downs given up on defense with 3rd & 15 or more. I’m glad he’s not the coach anymore.

It doesn’t matter if he’s good at evaluating talent. He’s should be a scout if you feel that’s the case. He showed he was horrible at using everyone abilities to the highest potential.
