Dominik Offers His QB Favorites
May 8th, 2014As many Bucs fans fantasize about who might be their next potential “franchise” quarterback, perhaps some still care who former Bucs rockstar general manager Mark Dominik thinks is worthy?
(Cue the boos.)
Speaking on the Mike and Mike show this morning, Dominik, now a “front office” insider for BSPN, said he loves Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr but only for a West Coast offense. Dominik also is a big supporter of Blake Bortles and Johnny Football. Those were the only three QBs he raved about.
Dominik emphasized that a system fit is key for any team drafting a QB. He also claimed QBs desperately need an “it-factor” that doesn’t always translate from their success in the college ranks to the NFL.
That was somewhat fascinating to Joe, considering Dominik drafted Josh Freeman for Jeff Jagodzinski’s system, but then approved booting that offense in favor of Greg Olson reviving Chucky’s West Coast playbook, a very different approach from Jagodzinski.
Dominik had plenty of interesting takes on the rest of the draft. Here’s the link. Joe was intrigued how Dominik explained that the draft-day trade down of the Bucs with Jacksonville (No. 5 to No. 7 in 2012) took 2 1/2 days to iron out.

Dang it…why did he have to like the same guy as me????!
I guess even a broken clock is right twice in a day.
May 8th, 2014 at 2:25 pm
And we all know Marky D knows knees and QB’s…
May 8th, 2014 at 2:26 pm
Oh, and coaches.. And free agents..
May 8th, 2014 at 2:29 pm
We should definitely take Bridgewater. This seals it.
May 8th, 2014 at 2:29 pm
2 1/2 days to trade down from 5 to 7.
2 1/2 minutes for Dallas to trade up to and take the player they thought would be there at 7 (Morris Claiborne).
May 8th, 2014 at 2:56 pm
Mr. Irrelevant…
May 8th, 2014 at 2:58 pm
Oh wow this is like asking George Bush who has weapons of mass destruction all over again lol…….
May 8th, 2014 at 2:58 pm
Joe
While you find it fascinating, I find it funny because Josh “pillow talk” Freeman had his best year under Olsen and Chucky’s offensive playbook.
May 8th, 2014 at 3:01 pm
The twin towers of ineptitude.
May 8th, 2014 at 3:01 pm
So your saying draft Bridgewater than….
May 8th, 2014 at 3:06 pm
As for rock star Dominik, I’d rather take fishing advice from someone living in the Sahara desert than take draft advice from Dom.
May 8th, 2014 at 3:07 pm
I’ll be LMAO when Manziel is sitting there and we pass on him!!
On the other hand, I’ll be slamming tequila if we do take him at #7!
May 8th, 2014 at 3:14 pm
My favorite QB’s:
NOT Johnny Manziel
NOT Teddy Bridgewater
That is all.
May 8th, 2014 at 3:14 pm
Cross every one off the list. Asking Dominick to draft players is like asking Oprah to get in a wet suit.
May 8th, 2014 at 3:16 pm
@OAR lol
May 8th, 2014 at 3:19 pm
If its true we are going to trade Glennon, then we may as well target Bortles or Carr!! Trade back for an extra pick and land one of them, then draft them a WR and O line protection.
I hope wherever Carr lands, his O line doesnt allow him to be killed like Houston’s O line did with his brother David!
May 8th, 2014 at 3:21 pm
@Madmax David was shell shocked after so many hits
May 8th, 2014 at 3:23 pm
The Bucs will take Manziel at #7 or they will trade down to 12 to 15. The pick there will be QB Derek Carr!
May 8th, 2014 at 3:26 pm
Manziel or one of the top OTs at #7.
May 8th, 2014 at 3:31 pm
If the ole man didn’t have his stroke this guy would have never been gm
May 8th, 2014 at 3:31 pm
Still believe Carr is, and has been, the Target.
Expect Bucs to Trade back, if possible. They want another 2nd( Glennon), and 3rd( trade back).
Hope it works.
May 8th, 2014 at 3:34 pm
Bad news for @Joe and everyone else that hoped that Manziel would be headed here:
Joe is not a message board/link festival. Never has been. –Joe

@FLBoyInDallas Says:

Way to call your shot. I guess you will wait until after the draft and see who is picked to call your shot, lol

@Joe, sorry for the full redirect link. i must’ve missed a space somewhere…

Jay Glazer is the best in the business and they only guy I’d trust if he was reporting something (not that I believe him per se, just he’d consistently shown to be more accurate and reliable). The Bucs all along have wanted all 3 QBs gone in a dream world, because then they’ll be assure of getting someone they want at a position of need (OT or WR with one of Evans, Watkins, Matthews and Robinson available, plus either Mack or Clowney too). It’s a dream scenario for non-Johnny lovers.
May 8th, 2014 at 3:40 pm
Hey Joe’s,
Would you please do one last shameless, man-loving
love-letter to Johnny Flash before the draft, please?
I’d pull out all the stops for this one if I were you.
Just let it rip.
It’ll be the Johnny post to end all Johnny posts.
Carry on.
May 8th, 2014 at 3:40 pm
I’ thinking Manziel or OT at #7, WR in 2nd rd, DE in 3rd rd (if an OT is taken at #7, otherwise an OT will be drafted in the 3rd and play G for a year or two).
May 8th, 2014 at 3:52 pm
I think what Glazer really meant in his “report” was he doesn’t think Manziel will make it to #7.
May 8th, 2014 at 3:52 pm
Hey guys,
I don’t know jack about the draft and don’t care! I reported what I said because I just saw a video of Michelle Steele/espn who is in the Bucs war room just said that Jason licht said they would take Manziel if he’s there otherwise trading down. She also said he already had the trades locked in. Of course Michelle could be lying too!
May 8th, 2014 at 3:57 pm
Shhhhh….nobody tell Joe about the Jay Glazer report. Keep it on the down low, just between us.
May 8th, 2014 at 4:09 pm
Note to all gms : stay away from those 3.
May 8th, 2014 at 4:13 pm
ESPN reported “Everybody likes everyone”
A follow up report from NFL Network noted “Nobody likes anyone.”
I’m getting a headache.
May 8th, 2014 at 4:18 pm
Just heard that Jay Glazer said that the Bucs interest in Johnny Football is a smokescreen, where is Joe to report this news?
May 8th, 2014 at 4:21 pm
Nick2 Says:
“Oh, wow this is like asking George Bush who has weapons of mass destruction…”
Even worse! This is more like asking Barrack Obama for advice on how to grow an economy, reduce a deficit or create jobs! THAT’S HOW BAD AN IDEA THIS IS!!
May 8th, 2014 at 4:22 pm
Cruel but real possibility here. By all reports dallas has JF as #1 on their board. Tampa takes him at 7. Joe releases his Pulitzer Prize winning article he has been crafting on the jbf site. Then a trade with the cowboys is announced and we get there 2014 1st and 3rd along with their 1st in 2015.
May 8th, 2014 at 4:28 pm
Pick Odell Becham at 16, trade Glennon for a third then move that third and the second back in late in the first for Carr.
So that is my dream
May 8th, 2014 at 4:28 pm
@Tnew…I’d do that deal all day long! I only hope that IF that is the case we could get Eric Ebron or Taylor Lewan in the Cowboys spot! It would be great to have 2 #1’s next season!

Carr.
May 8th, 2014 at 4:33 pm
There won’t be any trades of more than a couple spots.
May 8th, 2014 at 4:34 pm
In the first round, I mean.
May 8th, 2014 at 4:37 pm
You know, when you listen to these guys on nfln and espn talk about the QBs, they really talk Carr up big…yet they claim he’ll fall.
Heck, McShay is the only one that hates him…which is a good thing because McShay gets it wrong all the time.
May 8th, 2014 at 4:51 pm
Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
May 8th, 2014 at 6:25 pm
OAR
Why’d you stop you were on a roll…..seriously who cares what Dominick thinks. Freeman did have one of his best seasons under olsen but was also top 10 in passing yards under sully’s pathetic offense to, its bad enough he drafted Freeman but even worse he let Glennon take over to led dead last offense. Party off his job is saving the owner money, he made Freeman even more rich for doing nothing….he’s a cap guy anyway
Classic example of why this off-season was so unbearable, what did he do to earn a spot on Mike and Mike to talk about quarterbacks? Anyone see where I’m going with this because I’d take Joe’s analysis over dom’s unless he wants johnny football
