Mike Glennon’s Last Stand

April 21st, 2014
GlennonSchianobills

“Trust your training, my son.”

Bucs beat writer Rick Stroud believes Mike Glennon is preparing right now for what could be the biggest week of his career — in April.

This morning on WDAE-AM 620, Stroud talked about how the Buccaneers’ first minicamp under Lovie Smith (tomorrow through Thursday) could represent the time Glennon has to prove his value and save his Tampa Bay future.

Stroud made the case that Bucs coaches haven’t had a chance to see Glennon throw and scrutinize all things Glennon in the flesh. He’ll be running plays in shorts-and-helmets workouts this week, and the coaching staff needs to see significant command, per Stroud, to count him in their future.

Stroud said he’s convinced there’s only one reason the Bucs would trade up in the NFL Draft next month, and that is to draft a quarterback. He also is confident, like Joe, that the Bucs will add a promising QB at some point in the draft. So Stroud believes Glennon has a matter of hours to alter the thinking of the Bucs’ hierarchy.

Joe wrote last week about how the minicamp is critical to the futures of many returning Bucs. Glennon could be on the top of the list. Lovie already has said he plans to carry only two quarterbacks on his 53-man roster.

if i were Glennon, i’d want out. in light of what he accomplished with very little help. there are many teams that would pick him up in a heartbeat.
    can anyone remember Steve Young.

  2. lightningbuc Says:

    passthebuc,

Dead on. There’s about 31 better opportunities out there for Glennon than the Bucs’ QB Graveyard.

Although, if traded, his numbers will surely drop not having the likes of Chris Owusu, Skye Dawson, and Tiquan Underwood to throw to.

  3. gatrbuc17 Says:

Yes Pasthebuc I certainly do. I remember when we traded him for Vinny Testeverde cause all the talking heads said Vinny was so much better.

Mike Glennon became the First Rookie in NFL History to throw 10TDs to 1 INT
He became the First Rookie in NFL History to throw a TD in each of his first Eight games. He did this with 3rd and 4th string RBs, no 2WR, an Undrafted Rookie TE, a HORRID OL and the worst Coaching in the NFL. I bet he beats McCown out for the Starting position

  4. Tomcin Says:

I still think they will not draft a Qb till the 2nd or 3rd day, unless they don’t like what thet see in Glennon in mini camp. The only thing I saw last year is that he has no scrambling ability.

  5. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

All I have ever said is he played well enough for a shot. And, that’s all I expect is a shot.

If the coaches don’t like him or he doesn’t fit the scheme, that’s fine.

But, the absolute worst are the people on here who judge him by his looks, and call him stork, beeker, etc. I loathe the “swag” all hype and flash crowd. They’ve been bent out of shape since Freeman got unloaded.

  6. SAMCRO Says:

Let him go and see how fast Schiano’s buddy Belicheat puts a claim in for him. I doubt their would be a trade unless the Bucs take a 6th rounder, but why should teams spend draft picks when we will just eventually release him. I agree with lightningbuc about his opportunity here compared to other teams. The Bucs are looking for someone else so why try to hang on. If he’s not traded before or during the draft he should request his automatic release so he can have time to audition for other teams. If they draft a first round rookie, Glennon will not get a chance to compete. Wasted time. Plus, I would rather play for someone who can appreciate me.

  7. MadMax Says:

He’ll probably be just as good as McCown….just saying.

  8. Harry Says:

Glennon most definitely compares to Steve Young, not sure if its his looks or the mobility with which Glennon moves around in the pocket to buy time and extend the play for that 2, or maybe 4 yard pass. I hope Lovie recognizes what a diamond in the rough he has (“coal”?). Surely the coaches will equate the 27th/32nd ranked offense with future HOF consideration.

  9. William Says:

Connor Shaw is coming to Tampa. Glennon will be trade bate for the forth round this year. His mobility will exit him out of Tampa.

Although in the SF game Glennon did well in the no huddle offense before being shutdown by Mighty ex-Rutgers Coach because that was not parcticed during the week.

Yeah, Im glad we will have a different game plan this season. Even if finish 4- 12 this year, its going to feel like the winning the division compare to aweful coaching scenario of 2013.

  10. Buc1987 Says:

    McCown, Glennon, Kafka Period.

  11. biff barker Says:

Glennon won’t have a problem finding an opportunity elsewhere.

  12. lightningbuc Says:

    Harry,

If it’s so easy to tell how good or not good a QB is after a rookie season, then why did the Bucs let Young go? Surely, despite his abysmal record and stats while in Tampa, the Bucs clearly could see he was a future HOF’er. Why, pray tell, did they get rid of him?

  13. William Says:

    @Harry -LMAO

  14. phattitudes Says:

I have no love or hate for Glennon. What I see is a 3rd round pick that could use some coaching. I would hate to see the Bucs discard yet another high round value pick without even attempting to develop him. So many picks have been wasted over the last six years. If the Bucs choose to draft another QB, fine but don’t just dump Glennon. Develop him as a backup. Glennon is a raw prospect that can be molded to be a highly productive player. He has been touted to be a quick learner. He is certainly qualified to be at least a backup no matter what the “system”. He can give us every bit as much as Orlovsky provided (nothing). We must start investing time and patience in these draft picks. They DO have potential and the discard if not an immediate All Pro is a recipe for disaster,

  15. Bee Says:

How can you possibly compare Glennon to Steve Young? They have very few things in common, like being QBs and playing for the Bucs, thats about it. I personally don’t think Glennon is good, he didnt make any of his teammates better, hes a sack magnet, immobile, he specializes in checkdowns, and cant make plays by his self. With that said i still wanted to see him compete against McCown and a new rook to see if he could rise to the occasion. Oh well. If Glennon is as special as ppl think maybe he wouldve been traded by now like the other “talent” we graded (if he was put on the trading block). Hard to judge a player afer one season but…he didnt do anything great in that one season. Some like to mention Glennons amazing stats but it still equated to a losing record.

  16. William Says:

The last I remember Steve Young was able to scramble.
Glennon???? Am I in the twightlight zone?

  17. Macabee Says:

It’s up to Glennon if he stays or leaves. I’m pulling for him, he’s earned a chance, but that’s all.

If they don’t think he’s the guy, then I’m good with moving on. Coaches choice – the same decision that brought him to the Bucs!

  18. Buc1987 Says:

Macabee….I’m on the same page as you.

  19. Joe Says:

if i were Glennon, i’d want out. in light of what he accomplished with very little help. there are many teams that would pick him up in a heartbeat.
    can anyone remember Steve Young.

LOL might want to lay off the liquor. Not sure how you can compare Glennon to Steve Young. Not sure too many NFL teams consider leading an offense to No. 32 is much of an accomplishment. There are dozens of quarterbacks that can duplicate that.

  20. OAR Says:

Young was pretty bad on a horrible Bucs team. Young didn’t hit the ground running with the 49ers when he was traded to them either. He learned under Walsh and backed up Joe Montana a few years before an injury to Montana allowed him to start. The rest is history.

  21. Harry Says:

    @lightningbuc;
Yes, the bucs let Young go, it happens. Same with Farve (there, I will help you with your point). However, just like drafting a QB in the 6th rd who is a HOFer as the Pats did, it is a RARITY. Someone has to win the Lotto, someone has to be struck by lightning twice, it happens. But just bc it happens does not make it the norm. MG8, IMO, does not have “IT”

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“Even for us right now, the odds are we’re not going to keep three quarterbacks on the active roster…” – Lovie Smith

I don’t buy that for a second, unless Glennon looks so bad there is reason to cut him.

    They will keep three quarterbacks.

    – Lovie said that without having evaluated Mike Glennon
    – If Mike Glennon is as good as the MGM claims, he will make it impossible to not carry three QBs
    – Josh McCown is an ancient QB playing on a team that is well known for injuries
    – Josh McCown is nowhere near as good as people think. There
will be pressure to sit him as the season progresses
    – It’s not like we won’t have a roster spot for a 3rd QB. Heck, the offense is a wasteland right now

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

sheesh, I really hacked up that post.

  24. Buc1987 Says:

“Not sure too many NFL teams consider leading an offense to No. 32 is much of an accomplishment.” – Joe

The Panthers won the division with the 26th ranked offense.

    That is all.

Big difference. Steve Young won the Outstanding Player award for the Bucs the previous year. The Bucs traded him knowing he was good. One of the worst trades in NFL history.

Mike Glennon is not nearly as good as you think. Only certain Bucs fans thought he was good. No media source will cut the kid down, but they won’t say he’s the next Steven Young either.

In a trade the Bucs might have gotten a 3rd for him in a trade IF Dominick were the one negotiating. With Kason Licht? maybe a 7th.

  27. SeanyMac in SC Says:

Why does this team have Kafka on the roster? That pick up just seemed to happen in the shadows and no one really seems to know why.

  28. lightningbuc Says:

    ” it is a RARITY”

    __________

Actually, Harry, the rarity is when a rookie QB plays exceptionally well. Doesn’t happen that often. Many of the great QBs had mediocre rookie seasons.

Not saying Glennon will be great – so don’t put words in my mouth. But for you, Joe, and others to “know” he doesn’t have “it” is foolish.

Funny, cause I see this article…

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/04/20/josh-mccown-sees-young-qbs-as-nice-kids-ready-to-be-a-mentor/

And I see a positive Glennon comment…what’s that? 118 thumbs up to 12 thumbs down? I think most other fans think Glennon isn’t garbage, unlike a small (yet loud) minority of Bucs fans. It’s amazing how some people think Glennon is one of the worst QBs in modern history and needs to be dumped after last year. It’s this kind of irrational impatience that leads to fans demanding Gruden get fired…yeah the fans certainly got that one right…

You are using a comment for proof???? Really?? Those same fans say the head coach of the Patriots suck.

They also claim that Lovie will not do well in Tampa.

    Come on now…

  33. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    I agree with lightningbuc.

I would add, it works both ways. No one knows if he is good either. That’s why a QB pick in the draft is popular.

“…the rarity is when a rookie QB plays exceptionally well… Many of the great QBs had mediocre rookie seasons. Not saying Glennon will be great – so don’t put words in my mouth.”

I will disagree with part of what you said bc it pertains specifically to Glennon. I agree that “…many of the great QBs had mediocre rookie seasons..”. But I very much disagree that a rookie QB rarely play exceptionally well – up and down, yes. And at the end of the season, maybe his stats are “mediocre”, as you say. Usually, you see the greatness in them, mixed in with the frustrating stupid decisions. We could even see this in Free occasionally, that is what gave us hope for 4 freaking years. You see this in maybe all the great rookie QBs and this is exactly what is missing in Glennon.

We don’t see the “WOW”. We see MG8 with safe passes, nothing creative, nothing inspiring. A lot of the MGMers blame MG8’s poor showing on Schiano, yet point out Glennon’s 19-9 TD-INT ratio. I give the credit to that ratio partially to Schiano the control freak. So my point is that maybe Schiano made Glennon look better than he really is.

Right, but you’re acting like the overwhelming majority of people want to draft a QB at #7 (not true), that Glennon sucks (not true) and that the media thinks Glennon is a future backup (again, not true). In fact many questioned the signing of McCown because most feel Glennon is at least equal when factoring in age.

That was the point. This site, for instance, is an even worse judge of Glennon’s status in the team. This is the most extremes, from both sides. If you think the 10 extreme Glennon haters and the 10 extreme Glennon lovers repreent anything other than the extremes, then I don’t know what to say. Glennon is not held in as poor regard as you suggest.

  36. Barry Says:

Smith and Licht asses are on the hook concerning Glennon. They better be right. Also I’m confident Glennon will perform well next week. He is the better QB between the two.

  37. MR.T Says:

Glennon played better than both Geno Smith and E J Manuel and they are both the projected starters for their teams yet a number of you armchair experts want Glennon gone. If he is indeed traded I’m sure he will do quite well elsewhere. We’ll see what happens this week and what if any comments the coaches make on our QB situation after the mini camp is over.

  38. Buc1987 Says:

Schiano and Sully are gone so now it’s Glennon’s fault for leading the 32nd ranked offense with little talent around him in his rookie season. For if Schiano was never fired, and Sully let go, some would be blaming Sully and not Glennon.

In 2012 Phillip Rivers(not a rookie) led the 31st ranked offense. Perhaps he should have been let go too????

  39. Buc1987 Says:

In 2013 Joe Flacco(not a rookie) led the 29th ranked offense. Get rid of him.
In 2013 Eli Manning(not a rookie) led the 28th ranked offense. Get rid of him.
In 2013 Cam Newton(not a rookie) led the 26th ranked the offense. Get rid of him.

  40. Joe Says:

    1987:

Clearly Licht, Lovie and Tedford watched more tape of Glennon than any fan has access to; they have all the stat-geek numbers at their fingertips. They determined they couldn’t win right now with Glennon. So if Glennon is so misunderstood, please point out what the Bucs braintrust is missing. Joe knows people in that building read this site.

Offer up what you see in Glennon the Bucs don’t. Hell, you might even get a job out of it.

  41. tickrdr Says:

@ BEE and @ Harry and whoever.

IIRC, the Colts went 4-12 which gave them the first overall pick when they drafted Peyton Manning. The following year the Colts went 3-13!
Manning clearly had “it” as a first round draft pick and rookie, but that did not translate into more wins during his ROOKIE season.

Out of 51 QBs taken in the FIRST round over the last 20 years:
Only 7 had a QB rating higher than MG8’s 83.9
Only 3 threw for as many as 19 TDs, and MG8 did it in only 13 games.
    Only 1 had a TD/INT ratio better than mg8’s 19/9.
Even after their rookie seasons more than half of their seasons do not better Mike’s rookie season, no matter how much experience they gain.

But I agree with lightningbuc and Bucrightoff and Buc 1987 that we absolutely have to get rid of him before he actually throws a pass in front of the new coaching staff.

  42. Brandon Says:

I remember Steve Young… he was a talented playmaker with a ton of upside. Glennon is NOT!

  43. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

“They determined they couldn’t win right now with Glennon. ”

    They told you this?

In my mind, nothing has been decided yet. They signed McCown, but, it’s pretty low for FA QB. In fact, I can’t think of any presumed starters making less besides rookie contracts. Can you?

  44. Buc1987 Says:

Joe I see him as s quality back up just like you do. Maybe I’m the only one on the planet that doesn’t think they will take a QB in this draft and that they keep Glennon. So be it. We’ll see.

I’m merely blowing a HUGE hole through you’re 32nd ranked offense theory by mentioning other notable QB’s (some SB winners) leading low ranked offenses. Sorry if you don’t like it.

  45. Buc1987 Says:

Let me also add that if they do keep Glennon on the roster that I think he will give McCown(a back up most of his career) a run for his money in training camp in his 2nd season.

  46. Harry Says:

    @tickrdr,
I am not sure why you are talking to me when you did not quote anything I said. I did not bring up the Bucs 4-12 record. I spoke of QB play, and that I did NOT see the “IT” factor in Glennon. It is a team game, and comparing W-L records with other rookie QBs is completely and totally unrelated. I also did not say we should get rid of MG8. BUT I am a big advocate of drafting a QB at #7 if L&L think there is one there that merits it.

As Joe pointed out after my comment, once L&L had watched endless amount of tape on Glennon, they elected to pay $10M to McCown – not exactly an endorsement.

  47. Joe Says:

“They determined they couldn’t win right now with Glennon. ”

    They told you this?

Um, they declared very publicly that McCown is the starter a few weeks ago before many reporters including Joe. Go ahead and use Google for evidence.

  48. tickrdr Says:

    Steve Young………….Peyton Manning……………….Tom Brady……………. etc.

Just setting up a few straw men you can all knock down.
I have read ALL of these posts, and NOT ONE of the Mike Glennon supporters
is comparing him to any of these Hall of Fame performers.

When you were youngsters were you all voted “most likely to succeed” every year, and then your proud parents just stood by while you rose to greater and greater heights. I am sure that the Joe’s had the most successful and visited Bucs site after their very first year on the interwebs. I’ll even bet there were never any naysayers telling them they would never succeed at this. I’ll even guess that if you found a LOTTO ticket on the street in the general vicinity that the winning ticket had been sold and reportedly yet unclaimed, that you would simply toss it away, and not even check the numbers to see if it was any good.

  49. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Agree with ODB the signing of McCown says to me they want to have two QB’s on the roster who have shown they can step in as NFL starters and play well instead of wilt under pressure. I don’t see how anything Lovie or Licht has done so far points to Mike Glennon not at the very least being in the Bucs QB mix (obviously that could change if they draft a QB in day one…or maybe they keep Glennon and dump McCown depending on what they see in practice?)

  50. tickrdr Says:

    @ Harry

Completely agree with your entire post there.

I included you in the first post to talk about the IT factor, as it seems to me that many players have “it” some years, but certainly have less of “it” in other years.

  51. tickrdr Says:

    @ Toes on the line:

    Agree completely.

In fact, with respect to the exact wording that Lovie and Licht used, could someone with better hearing than I have please re-listen to their interview. I’m not sure I ever heard the exact word “starter”, but rather that there had to be a “starting point”, or someone who would go first in the rotations in practice, i.e. first on the depth chart, which may have been offered to McCown as an inducement to sign here. (Besides the millions LOL)

    tickrdr

  52. Buc1987 Says:

tickrdr…correct and Phillip Rivers did not have that “it” factor in 2012 and rebounded to have the “it” factor in 2013.

  53. Buc1987 Says:

tickrdr…I just looked it up. Lovie was asked by reporters supposedly point blank if McCown is the starter and he said. “Yes he is”. I don’t for the life of me remember Joe ever putting an article about it. I do remember the quote that you were mentioning about the starting pointy thingy.

  54. Buc1987 Says:

“During the press conference to announce McCown’s signing, Smith was asked if the 34-year-old journeyman would be his starter heading toward the 2014 season.”

    Smith’s reply: “Yes, he is.”

  56. Uk_Buc Says:

Football is a team sport….no QB was ever solely responsible for a win, nor solely responsible for a loss….this nonsense about “wins” when talking about a QB is brainless.

The same goes for the ranking of an offence…..how good would Ponder’s ranking have been a couple of years ago, in the same offence as AP and his O-line? If that put the Vikings in the top ten offence rankings (no idea if they did or not, just illustrating point), does that make him a top ten Qb?? No, it means he was one part of a top ten offence.

I don’t really care if we stick with glennon or not, but anyone discounting the fact he had no support cast around him plays too much Madden.

  57. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

” they declared very publicly that McCown is the starter a few weeks ago. Go ahead and use Google for evidence.”

You can also Google Lovie’s plan for Revis if you want…….

or you can Google Mike Williams fresh start here in Tampa. Wait, nm, I read that here. 😉

  58. getaclue Says:

Glennon was the most-sacked quarterback in the NFL during the 13 weeks he played (43), and was under pressure on 43.4 percent of his dropbacks (second most). He tied for the second-most pass attempts during which he was hit by a defender (8), despite his playing three fewer games than anyone in the top nine in the category. When under pressure, Glennon averaged 4.4 yards per attempt, threw seven touchdowns to six interceptions, and posted a 55.7 QBR. With no pressure, he averaged 7.4 yards per attempt, threw 12 scores and three picks, and put up a 101.4 QBR. Every quarterback wants a clean pocket, but it is apparent that Tampa Bay’s protection issues took their toll on the rookie passer.

  59. Bucsfanman Says:

Boy, nothing stirs the pot like Glennon or Manziel!
This is normal. Glennon will want to showcase his talents regardless. That said, there is ZERO reason to (a) trade him or (b) release him. Every starter is one hit from the DL. Would you rather Glennon or Kafka?!
    Don’t be foolish.

  60. Buc1987 Says:

Bucsfanman…there’s another great point. The Bucs sign Kafka, but yet might let go or trade Glennon away??? That part makes no sense at all.

  61. QB or burst Bucfan Says:

    Joe,
Your assessment is correct. It’s more than apparent.
The new regime reviewed all the tape from last season, and decided that Glennon is not starter material. They payed McCown to start.
They are looking at every QB in this draft.

Glennon is not their man. He will be traded if possible, cut if not.
Management has shown no interest in Glennon at all. After last season, no one would.
Our future QB has not been drafted yet.

  62. Eric Says:

Lovie didn’t come back to the NFL to play Mike Glennon at QB.

    Not happening, period.

  63. BucfaninMi Says:

This overhaul better work out, I think Lovies ego has got the best of him. What if they finish 4-12 again? It’s possible. I’m rooting for success no matter who the coach is, if this backfires, this franchise will be a huge joke!

  64. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    bucrightoff,

I’m not trying to start anything, but I really think you are mistaken. First, claiming that Glennon is at least equal to McCown is not a good thing. I happen to agree on that point, but the issue is that McCown isn’t much good either.

I even think Glennon can potentially be better than McCown in the long run. McCown is a career backup. That’s all he will ever be. He was planning to retire this year and decided against it because he realized he could finally make some money.

I’ll say this. I think that even if the Bucs draft a QB, McCown will be the worse QB on the roster.

We don’t know the ceiling or floor on Glennon. That’s why we need true competition. McCown will be out starter come game one. But he may not hold onto the position. If he turns out to be really, really bad, there will be pressure to bench him.

And that’s why I think we keep 3 QBs. And why I feel we draft a QB in round one or two.

  65. Scoobs Says:

If a QB is taken Napoleon Dynamite is cooked!!

  66. Patrick Says:

Mike Glennon had such a dreadful rookie season. Throwing for a 2:1 td-int ratio and completing 60% of your passes in your first 13 NFL games is completely unacceptable.

  67. NY Buc Says:

    ^^^

How embarrassing will it be for the Bucs if they cut or trade Glennon to a team, he ends up starting on said team, and winds up posting better numbers than whoever the Bucs starting QB in 2014 is. I am a Bucs fan and hate to see the team get rid of talented guys, but I would enjoy the ‘told you so’ comments pointed at the guys here who wanted Glennon gone and said he stinks.

  68. Bucfan#37 Says:

I’ll remain a Glennon supporter no matter the doubters and the outright haters of his potential as a starting QB. I can see him traded also. Many obviously think he is’nt even a legitimate NFL backup. The draft is really a crapshoot, with the Bucs in the past making more than their share of picks that did’nt work out. Lovie and the coaching staff have and will improve the team. That’s all a fan can ask for.

  69. Patrick Says:

Glennon is the best quarterback on the Bucs roster right now. Marc Trestman isn’t on the Bucs coaching staff so prepare yourselves for McCown to revert back to his old self if he’s our quarterback.

  70. BUCSLEGENDS Says:

Not sure what Glennon can be, but I sure wish I could have seen him in an offense that didn’t handcuff him constantly.

  71. Not Joe Says:

Glennon will be gone and not many teams will pick him up as a starter. back up at best.

  72. Buc1987 Says:

QB or burst Bucfan…please do stop in more from to time to time. Pick a name any name you choose if you like.

My assessments are not always right. The same can be said for Joe on a number of things, by a number of people who frequent these blogs. 🙂

  73. BamBamBuc Says:

For the record, I do think they should keep Glennon even if they draft a QB in the 1st round. I like the idea of McCown starting/mentoring, the rookie learning, and Glennon inactive but here in case of injury. Glennon should make a very good backup and part time starter. He has surpassed expectations of a 3rd round pick and could have very good value.

That said, I don’t believe he will ever be anything spectacular. That is my opinion, nothing more. I can only see in 13 games what anyone else can and form an opinion, right or wrong. I do believe there are QBs in this draft that have much greater potential than Glennon and are worth a 1st round pick. None are without issues/flaws, but I believe the ceiling is higher. Again, right or wrong. Other QBs have fallen in the draft for similar flaws…. Wilson was too small (Manziel and Bridgewater), Kaepernick was from a smaller school, lower level competition. This is why there are QBs having success outside the 1st round. Teams overvalued the flaws and undervalued the talent.

  74. Drew Thomas Says:

If you think Glennon is a starter in this league, you need to wake up. I have never, never see a qb so bad in the red zone its actually funny. He is a dinosaur, his style is dead. Especially when you can’t put the ball in the end zone from 10 yards in. Or hit wide open receivers in stride down the field. The reason we where the 32nd ranked offense is because of Glennon. YOU KNOW WHO GLENNON IS IDENTICAL TOO??? DILFER AND GLENNON = IDENTICAL QUARTERBACKS. GLENNON MOB SHUT UP. You are making buc fans look like morons.

  75. MadMax Says:

Cant WAIT to see Glennon as our starter with better O line protection and WR’s….of with BOTH positions will be upgraded through the draft and before the season starts! Mark my words!!!!!!!!!!
