Gerald McCoy And His Contract
April 16th, 2014Yes, Bucs stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy made waves yesterday when he boldly stated, with that signature ear-to-ear grin on his face, that when training camp starts, he will be on the practice fields at One Buc Palace.
GMC is being given a ton of responsibilities in the new/old defense run by head coach Lovie Smith. And GMC is the unquestioned leader of the defense, and perhaps the team. So it would not be the sign of a leader to sit out and squeeze the Bucs to re-up his contract, which ends after this coming season.
The BSPN talking heads of Jim Basquil and Jeff Saturday discuss GMC’s contract, and the Bucs’ defensive line as a whole, which Saturday said will cash in under the guidance of Lovie.

Looks like Ive found my next jersey…..#93 McCoy…although a different color, I’ll wear it PROUD!

I think its pretty ridiculous how the media made this such a big story. Its not like he is making chump change this season. His contract is under the old CBA where rookies in the top 5 picks were getting big time contracts. Now if this were LaVonte David it would be a different story since he has clearly already out played his rookie contract.

Glad to have guys like McCoy on this team. I hope the Bucs take good care of him.

@RCH Thats a good point, they should lock up David asap while he is still affordable 🙂

GMC agent won’t do a deal until after Suh is signed.
April 16th, 2014 at 12:44 pm
Phil is correct. GMC will let Suh set the market and will negotiate after that. It’s the smart move on his part.
April 16th, 2014 at 1:28 pm
If I remember correctly, the Bucs can’t negotiate a new contract with Lavonte David until after the end of the 2014 season. With the new rookie contracts, I believe it’s three years before a new deal can be signed.
As for McCoy, he’s a class act and a dominant player. I hope the Bucs works something out soon.

I think he is askin 11 mill a year like the deal geno atkins got. Best defensive player or not I don’t think he should get more than 8 mill a year. Why u might ask, n I will tell u why. If he takes an 11 mill a year it’ll be like the revis deal where we pay sh’tload on one player. Do u guys like having a crippled salary cuz I don’t. Its ridiculous to think how greedy professional players are. They are a part of a sport that we love n they get paid ridiculously for it. Its not like theyre doctors or scientists finding a cure for cancer. I will be pissed if mccoy goes after the bucs wallet. 8 mill a year is a team players salary a player who wants to win for many years. But he will get the fat pay day.
April 16th, 2014 at 2:26 pm
delsen, he is already getting $11 million.
He’ll want more, most likely 15-17 mill. More if he hits double digit sacks this year, which is why the Bucs should lock him up quickly.
April 16th, 2014 at 3:32 pm
GMC should be coming into his prime right about …………
April 16th, 2014 at 3:47 pm
That picture reminds me of Shaq. Just hope he doesn’t pull something on us like Shaq did to Orlando. Just kidding. He won’t.
April 16th, 2014 at 4:35 pm
He is getting 15.8 or somethin like that this season from his rookie contract
April 16th, 2014 at 4:46 pm
He is making 13 million this year. Take a 5 million dollar pay cut is just ridiculous. Team players restructure their contact if the team needs the cap room not play for less money then they deserve. They deserve it because there is a demand, they are the best their craft and their product generates profits. It will probably be a 4 year 58-60 million dollar deal.
April 16th, 2014 at 5:25 pm
Great for Gerald.
I still have question for Joe, do you not have any other pictures of the stud captain of the team to run with a story about his contract extension? Maybe his official team picture – http://imageshack.com/a/img838/2372/r56h.png – instead that silliness you roll out all the time.
April 16th, 2014 at 6:41 pm
That’s an unrealistic figure no way he gets paid 15 mill a year. I’m saying 11 for 5 or 6 years. If dominik was here he’d probably get 15 a year
April 16th, 2014 at 9:09 pm
delson, wake up man.
suh is pushing for close to $20 million. not that he’ll get it. the salary cap goes up and up. the good ole boys network is making fistful of $$$. please stop. our whole society is screwed up with sports and acting vs teaching and police, but don’t fault the players only.

Football is a multi multi billion dollar business and the best players should get compensated with what the market will bear. They provide the entertainment. Yes it is a ridiculous amount of money but it’s a short career and it’s no different than other ‘entertainers’ making huge dollars off of movies, concerts, etc. It’s capitalism at it’s best. I personally have no issue with it. The money isn’t coming out of my pocket and if it’s too much the NFL teams know how to say ‘no’.
April 16th, 2014 at 11:44 pm
Gmc is amazing but was sapp the leader of the defense or Brooks?
I’m thinking LVD will take that roll very soon if he hasn’t already.
April 16th, 2014 at 11:45 pm
And Gmc already has a pretty high contract won’t be too much more they’ll have to spend to lock him up.
