Growing buzz places a top QB prospect at the Bucs’ feet
This isn’t Joe’s quote, it’s from one of the three big cheese NFL Network draft gurus, Daniel Jeremiah, the former NFL scout.
Jeremiah spoke on the recent “Path to the Draft” show Thursday.
“We’ve heard a lot about the Browns, we’ve heard a lot about the Jaguars. But I think you slide down to pick No. 7 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I think that’s a perfect fit for him,” Jeremiah said. “You’ve got a good running game behind you in Doug Martin. I love what Jason Licht has done in his first season with the team, very aggressive in free agency to fill a lot of holes.”
“I think they have a luxury here. You’ve got [Josh] McCown here at quarterback so he could play to start them off and then eventually you can slide in Johnny Football and go.”
There’s growing buzz that the Browns will use their second pick in the first round and take Fresno State QB Derek Carr. The key point is they’ll pass on drafting a QB with their No. 3 overall pick. Many believe either the Texans (No. 1) or Jaguars (No.3) will take a quarterback (not both) and the Raiders and Falcons won’t go QB, either.
And that scenario likely would leave either Teddy Bridgewater or Johnny Football sitting there for the Bucs.
Oh, the next 7 1/2 weeks are going to be filled with excellent fantasies for Joe.
Hopefully, the Bucs will never have this good a draft position again under Lovie Smith. They need a QB for the future. This year should be their best shot to score a first-round superstar.

I’m confident that the Bucs will draft a QB in one of the first 3 rounds, and that they already have their eye on whoever that is. Don’t believe it’s Manziel or Bridgewater however. Possibly Bortles, possibly Carr, but I doubt it’s even one of those two. My guess is that in the first 3 rounds they’ll select an OL, a WR plus a QB. Key word in that statement is ‘guess’ however; only Lovie and Licht and Tedford know for sure who they want to target.

If I were a betting man, I’d say they’d pass on Johnny Sportsball. Not everyone in the NFL is sold on him. In fact an informal anonymous poll of NFL QB coaches conducted recently revealed that no less than 17 of them prefer Derek Carr to Jimmy Dodgeball. Based on the “controlled” and detail oriented offense that Tedford runs, I think they would be less interested in a sandlot style player like Fruity Fruitball. Joe, you need to give it up. You’re pushing the issue beyond reasonable limits and you are bound to be disappointed. Seriously. Juicy Fruitballs will not be playing in a Bucs uniform.

Sorry Joe, Jason Licht was the college scout for the Patriots when they selected Tom Brady in the 6th round. He is 1 for 1 in finding franchise QB’s and that QB was a value pick in the 6th round.

I wouldn’t preclude *any* team from taking a QB. With the season that Matty Ice just had, he certainly didn’t show that ‘wow’ factor. Nor did he raise the play of the other members of his team. It’s possible that last season, he was the 4th best QB in the NFCSouth. Will the Falcons take a chance on missing a ‘franchise’ QB, if one is there. They certainly don’t expect to be drafting this high again any time soon.

Of course I will be willing to eat plenty of crow if Manziel pans out, but I don’t think I will need any utensils at all. If he drops to 7 and they draft him, I will have no choice but to become a bigger Johnny Football fan than Joe Why, because that’s how I roll.

that would be so cool. Bucs fans could finally get excited about watching the team’s FIRST EVER franchise QB play on Sundays. It has been exciting at time in the past to watch the D play, and certain parts of the offense, like Doug Martin and VJ. And now hopefully a real QB. Bring on Teddy/Johnny!!!

I am willing to bet that regardless of which team he plays for, that Johnny Manziel will not beat the rookie year stats of Mike Glennon. Even if he ends up here with a much better supporting cast than MG8 had. And I fully admit that I have never seem JM play.
Specifically: 3 separate bets.
1) his QBR (minimum of 300 attempts) will be less than 83.9 for 2014.
2) his TD total will be less than 19 for his first thirteen games.
3) his TD/INT ratio will be less than 19/9 .
If he doesn’t play = I win the bet.

No, if Mancrush doesn’t get past Glennon numbers it’s probably because he will be on IR before week 8 if he runs half as much as he did at A&M. Look at Vick, RGlll. Mancrush is smaller than those guys and plays more recklessly. Imagine JF running across the middle and getting blasted by Goldson or Barron. Or worse, getting blindsided by someone like Clowney or J.J Watt. Ugh.

My reasons for the bets only have to do with historical statistics. Over the last twenty years, only 7 of 51 QB’s drafted in the first round have had a QBR > 83.9 in their rookie years. Only 3 of 51 have thrown for as many as 19 TDs in their ROOKIE season. And only 1 of 51 has had a TD/INT ratio > MG8’s 19/9! I would be ahead on the bet even if we’re discussing the last consensus “franchise” QB, i.e. Andrew Luck.He did throw for 23 TDs over his 16 game rookie season, but also had 18 INT’s, while posting a rookie QB rating of 76.5. So he fails to win two of the three bets vs. MG8’s stats. The only QB drafted in the first round who would win all three of those bets is RG III during his rookie season. (QBR 102.4, 20 TDs, and only 5 INTs.

Licht has hinted heavily that they have some franchise QBs in mind that may be available outside of the first round. I have a feeling that this is going to be their preference, since they’ve got McCown to hold down the fort for a year or two. That way they can draft WR, OL, DE, or LB with the earlier picks. The big 3 QBs might be a bit overrated… getting more and more of a sense as days pass that there isn’t as much interest in Bridgewater, Bortles, and Fruityball… It’s going to be hilarious to see Fruityball on the board in the second round and read Joe’s moaning about it when the Bucs pass on him twice!!!

Like I said before, bad teams like the Jags and Browns draft players like Manziel. If the Bucs draft this guy, they’ll be in the mix for Jameis Winston(If he doesn’t come out next season) and Christian Hackenberg in 2 years.

I don’t see Bridgewater or Manziel being there. I’m not an advocate of Manziel either. I think the Buccs will land a suoerstar, though our last seventh pick overall hasnt worked out (yet). I feel one will slip…just don’t see manziel’s make-up making it in the league, but will def. root for him and be excited if we draft him.
how many winners (ala heisman) come into the league with a lot of hype only to fail at qb? Rodney Pete anyone? we can go down the list…
I say the Buccs go d’ (Clowney, Mack), Olineman. I hate to take a chance on receiver that high, but like Watkins right away being able to be productive in our offense in a win now league.

Since you are, obviously, a new Buc fan, you are excused from being ignorant of former Bucs who were ‘franchise’ QBs.
Since the criteria seems be ‘selected in the first round’, you might want to research the names of Steve Spurrier, Doug Williams, Jack Thompson, Vinny Testeverde, Chris Chandler, Trent Dilfer and Josh Freeman. Yep, these are the guys who took the Bucs to the promised land, for many years, with their ‘wow’ factor and the elevation of the players around them.
And ignore that *NINTH* round pick, Brad Johnson. No ‘wow’. No elevation of his teammates.

Agree but his moves are entire different from mark dominik. Mark dominik just looked to collect players regardless of system fit and in terms overpaid big time.
Licht spends wisely and how players fit the scheme. To me this had to be done. Dom screwed up many drafts and FA signings and what lovie wanted to do , he needed the players and the cap. I bet lovie and licht want goldsons 9 mm off but they can’t simply do it bc of Dom. Same with nicks. But he’s got 7 mm guaranteed as well.

No Manziel is not the perfect fit. If you read what you put on here about Lovie’s ideal QB, that is not Manziel. Actually, it sounds like AJ McCarron is a perfect fit. No one seems to mention that McCarron is the game manager that Lovie covets, plus he’s a ton of experience against the best defenses in college football.

Joe- you can shout it till the cows come home..but can’t see Lovie married at the hip with JF. Two completely different personalities and lifestyles. HE will go with Tedford wanting Carr after they trade down and pick up another third or fourth round pick.
We still need a third CB since we didn’t get Tillman and we need a SAM..Cassillas isn’t the answer.. STILL no 3rd WR. Still a bunch of holes but a LOT better off than we were a week ago!

I realize that most NFL players are egotistical, but I cannot think of one individual on the Bucs’ current roster who can even come close to matching the the cockiness of Johnny “Pompous-Narcissist” Football. The thought of this scenario makes me want to throw up . . . wait . . ., I just did . . . .
While I know this makes zero impact whatsoever for the rest of football-humanity, but I, myself, will quit being a Bucs fan if he is drafted and as long as he remains on the team.
I earnestly hope another team is stupid enough to take him before the Bucs even have a chance to actually consider it.

“Franchise player is an athlete who is not simply the best player on their team, but a player that the team can build their “franchise” (team) around for the foreseeable future.” It does not appear that even your Brad Johnson would fall into that category. I like Brad, but he was a game manager, only.

I don’t know enough about Manziel, have’nt seen enough of his play to say whether or not he would fit in the Bucs plans. Even though some say his stock has fallen, I think he will be gone before the 7th pick. I don’t see a QB pick for the Bucs in the first round.

Yes, Licht has clearly intimated that his franchise QB is not one of the “big names” being talked about so that pretty much rules out a QB pick at 7 unless he’s just putting out a smoke screen.

Hopefully our new Josh will be better than our old Josh. That “franchise” QB managed to take two consecutive delay of game penalties, and couldn’t even audible to avoid throwing away the timeouts, despite being our 5th year starter. All he could do was point at his helmet, and tell us what most of us already knew…… there was nothing between the earholes.

I apologize if calling you a new Buc fan insulted you. *My* intention was not to insult, but educate. I thought you *were* a new fan. Since I’ve seen you post on numerous articles, I thought you were of the same mind as most in here; and that is that a QB taken high in the first round is being taken because the team believes this is a ‘franchise QB’. Even though I do not remember you arguing against that definition, I’ll take you at your word that you do not believe that a high first round QB is a ‘franchise QB’. Even with my eighth grade education I know, that to take one for a backup role is beyond stupid. That being said, I stand behind my assertion, that the Bucs have had 7 (seven) ‘franchise QBs’ ( all taken with a first round pick) in their history.
Congrats on being a Buc fan for 20 years. That’s a long time for us to have something in common and yet argue.
BTW, I agree (another miracle!) with you about Brad Johnson. I never said or implied that he was a franchise QB . As with so many other Super Bowl winning teams, a franchise QB was not necessary (wanted, but not necessary).
Where I believe we truly disagree, is with the use of the first round for a QB. At #7, I believe that the Bucs can make a bigger impact than with a QB.
If you wish to hurl more insults, be my guest. With my eight grade education, I probably won’t understand most of them. OTOH, if you just disagree with my position, and accept my apology, we can argue/agree about anything else you wish. :^)

Your not alone in your opinion that you “…believe that the Bucs can make a bigger impact than with a QB…”. To be honest, you could be correct, it just depends on what L&L see in the potential of available QBs versus Watkins, et al. But if L&L believe Teddy/Johnny can be that guy, no other position on the football team can have the impact the QB can have. And statistics show that drafting a QB in a lower round is a total crap shoot. So if L&L don’t do it with the first pick, I hope they don’t do it at all – just a waste of a pick (unless its the 6th or 7th rd, then who cares.)

I am shocked that more people aren’t alarmed by our linebacker situation. Hayward and Watson are gone (although main contributions were on special teams) and there is NO WAY that Foster will be able to fill the MIKE roll in this defense. Re-signing Casillas is ok but we still need starters at SAM and MIKE. My guess would be to trade down a few spots to get extra picks and draft Mack, Barr, or Shazier. I am more than OK with McCarron or Carr in rounds 2-3.

I don’t know. If a QB is available at #7 then we should take him. As Joe says, we may not draft this high for a while. I like Derrick Carr but not at #7.
