No More Queries About Sammy Watkins

Joe likes WR Sammy Watkins but wouldn’t draft him if he was Bucs GM Jason Licht.
Joe finally reached his fill last night. For the — Joe can’t count that high — day/evening in a row, some Bucs fan Twittered Joe all but demanding Joe agree with him that the Bucs should grab Sammy Watkins at No. 7. Joe is simply sick of typing the same reply.
(Shoot, Joe gets this Watkins question more than he sends out stalkerish e-mails to Rachel Watson.)
Joe will not lobby for a Watkins pick at No. 7, though Joe surely won’t lose sleep if the Bucs select Watkins. Joe Twittered out what he is about to type in the following paragraph. And Joe won’t type it again, on any forum.
Joe would pass on drafting Watkins. For two reasons: One, the Bucs have more glaring needs. Two, the draft is so deep with wide receivers, lousy with wide receivers even, the Bucs can get a productive starter in the third round (Joe has typed the name “Allen Robinson” as often as he has typed his explanation).
We all know who Joe would select at No. 7 (if for some odd reason you don’t know, check Joe’s archives). Short of that, Joe would pick the highest-rated offensive tackle on the board whether it is Greg Robinson, Jake Matthews or Taylor Lewan. No, Joe is not sold on the strength of the Bucs offensive line. A six-year veteran who has never started a full-season slotted at left tackle and a marginal starter at right tackle does not help Joe rest at night.
So please copy and paste this explanation into a Word file and save yourself some time. No need to query Joe about Watkins. You have your answer here. If you forget, refer to the file you saved.
If you ask Joe on Twitter again about Watkins, Joe will pull a Tom Crean and ignore it.

No Sammy…trade down. I really think we will trade down if possible. If we would cut Revis to go from 4th to third, would it surprise anyone if we traded down for a middle first, second, and maybe a forth? Then use them for a QB and two high WR’s.

So Watkins draft stock is rising while your man love’s stock is declining along with Bridgewaters…… BTW all of us Watkins lovers (who will already be taken by the time the Bucs pick) would tell you there will be a franchise quarterback available in the 3rd round as well. Our new GM even indicated that.
So as much as you are tired of the Watkins drum beat we are completely over the Manziel love. You want to call a truce we can move on. Keep mentioning Johnny Football and we will keep countering with Watkins.

Joe, your draft analysis is as bad as your air of self-importance. Watkins is head and shoulders—by far–the best receiver available no matter how you and your ilk keep repeating that the draft is “deep” at WR. The Dungy disciple who was a fail in Chitown needs to declare the QB job open and be prepared to draft a potent offensive weapon with the seventh pick.

Great response to NOT drafting Sammy Watkins.. Allen Robinson, a Mike Williams clone. Big, athletic, can’t separate vertically or short with anything other than size. You could have at least said, “Brandin Cooks” or somebody that offers something different than what we already have.

To overanalyze it: Cutting Penn for Collins saved us some, but didn´t make us better – anyhow, we got ourselves a capable starter and maybe he can play RT also and our draft pick will be LT.. or better we find that LT elsewhere and use that draft pick on.. quite a few players would be very nice.. and trading back also helps a lot.. lets see what happens (please no QB outside of Bridgewater and to hell with Mack at the 7th)

I’m all for drafting Watkins but your shots at Smith are unwarranted and idiotic by you. What other coach COULD we have gotten with a better resume than Smith? Seriously, Lovie was by far the best of a fairly unimpressive lot of coaches…and even if the group was impressive, Smith’s credentials are every bit as impressive as Andy Reid’s.

Sammy Watkins will have to get past the Rams and the Raiders to be there at #7 if the latest mocks are to be believed. If the confidence in the top 5 QBs continues to erode, it is highly unlikely that he will be there.
With the weapons war going on among the top NFL teams, do not be surprised if one of them offers a king’s ransom and trades up to acquire Watkins. The 49ers have 12 draft picks and 3 third round picks and Watson is a game-changer.
Since the Bucs named McCown the starting QB and only gave him a 2yr contract, together with the questions about the Top QBs and Bridgewater’s pro day, I’m seeing mocks with the Bucs taking a QB at #7. This is a real alternative.
If the decision to trade Revis is an indicator, would the Bucs trade Watkins or another top 5 QB for a windfall of draft picks? If Watson and Robinson are there, given the need to overhaul the O-Line, would the Bucs take Watson in such a rich WR draft? I don’t even know what I would do here, leave alone predicting what the Bucs would do.
I want Watson, but the more I look, I’m liking everything I see in the 1st round, so I’m of the opinion that whoever they pick is going to help out a lot and only the previous administration could get this wrong (unnecessary shot but I had to take it)!

Woopity doopity do. Like any of us fans even have a clue what will happen come draft day.
I like the idea of taking Watkins at 7 or a T at 7 but best bet would be trade down get more picks and draft BPA, not really “joelovestruck” on any of the QB’s in first round. But to trade you need a trade partner. Not sure we will find one willing to trade more than just swapping first rounders. Be great if we trade down for their first maybe a second and a third/fourth. This sounds like a fantasy dream Imo.
Regardless what will happen will happen with and without my favorite buccaneer blog’s writers write about or not about.

Recirver is only as good as the QB who will deliver the ball. Plus he wouldn’t touch the ball as much as a QB does. You always draft the best QB if your specific team is in need, the bucs NEED one.

Wr in this draft is deep. Doesn’t mean there is a receiver as good as Watkins. To me behind online, wr is our biggest need then just pure depth across the board. I’m with ya Joe. Rather see clowney Bridgewater or jfb fall to us but if not Watkins or tackle is the pick. If that’s the case id try to trade down

It’s official…joe is stark raving bonkers! Pass on Sammy Watkins! Seriously! An AJ Green, Julio Jones type playmaker that only comes along a few times a decade! A dynamic player that along with V-Jax, Doug Martin, Mike Williams, Timmy Wright, Mike James, etc. would make any QB (even Josh McCown) look like Tom Brady? No freakin way! If Watkins is there at 7 we grab him instantly and giggle like schoolgirls over our stroke of luck!

I stated this yesterday but the Bucs can deal the 7th pick to Chicago or Dallas who are desperate for DL help. Tampa could and move down a bit and get whatever their board dictates. If they want Carr there then hey it’s their jobs and risks on the line, success or failure.
The important thing is getting more picks and they’re in perfect position to do that.

I think that the Bucs drafting Manziel would be a horrible thing for JBF. Once Manziel has to get the restraining order on the Joes and they aren’t allowed anywhere near the team anymore then all of the coverage that we enjoy from the site will not be there anymore. Think big picture here Joes.

Joe has lost it completely! Watkins is an AJ Green/Julio Jones type playmaker…the kind that comes along maybe 4-5 times a decade! We would be NUTS not to take him if he’s there! He would make our offense INSTANTLY better. Paired with v-Jax, Williams, Doug Martin, etc… Watkins would give us more weapons than the opposing team could cover! If the Bucs brain trust truly want McCown/ Glennon to succeed, they will not pass on this guy and I don’t think they will!

OT and O-line is the biggest waste of a top tier pick you can make these days sans spending it on a RB/FB. Go ask the Dolphins how “investing 1st round picks” in the trenches served them; multiple 1st day picks and one of the worst lines in the league. OL can be found and developed in the later rounds, look no further then our starters/line man the last few years. Our most productive guys Penn/Zuttah were a FA off the street and a 3rd round pick. Our highly coveted & high picks Joesph/Trueblood were either terrible or injured. I’m all with taking that best player available sans O-line (good teams do this) bad teams panic. Hopefully we draft a QB/WR/TE or LB/DE with that 7th pick and leave the trenches to be filled later on.

The same could be said of QB. This draft goes deeper than recent ones. With Garropollo, Murray, Mettenberger, McCarron, and maybe Carr lasting past the 1st round. Let’s not forget Jordan Lynch who finished in front of Johnny Boy this year in votes for Heisman Finalists. With Glennon coming in with more experience and the addition of McCown, there are now bigger holes than QB, and WR is one of them. After Williams we have who exactly? Skye Dawson? Eric Page? I wouldn’t trade up for Watkins, but if he’s there it would be insane to pass on him. I would not trade up for Mancrush either.

Well Joe, to the poor sap that twittered you: tough luck. He won’t be there. Most people have recognized that Watkins is cant miss talent. Unlike the QBs, or even Mack and Barr. Shoot, he’s more of a lock to be good than Joes boy Taylor (yuck) Lewan. (My personal philosophy is you never draft USC, or Big 10 in the fist round. RARELY works out for you.) As of now, I think the best option is to trade back, use the Mathews pick as leverage to a tackle needy team, and get a second rounder this year and MAYBE next year. Then take one of the following 4 people. Evans, Gilbert, Nix, Hageman. They have value there and the additional second makes it go down easier.

Love Watkins, but dang we just have never had any luck drafting a WR in round one.
Of course, the same could be said for QB.
Its hard to say, good points can be made either way. The man sure impressed me in that bowl game. Unstoppable.
Id rather get the great prospect than trade down. We need star power and we did enough in FA to address the lines.
That Bengals guy started 13 games last year. Zero sacks I think.

This year i have not been agreement with Joe’s selections but I do agree here, partially. If the 2 big O tackles and Mack are off the board at our #7 pick, I would trade down. I am not sold on any of the top QB’s in this years draft and would bolster my O line and receiving corp with additional picks.

So if we pick one of the top 3 tackles, that means we have 3 starting tackles for our offensive line. The bucs currently need a guard, do we push somebody inside? Do we draft a guard in the 2nd also? Im confused why we would provide depth for our 7th pick of the draft

I want Manziel. The guy is a winner, he is cocky as hell, and will rally the guys around him. McCown is a good solid experienced back-up that can fill in while Johnny gets comfy. If we hit on Manziel, we will have our starting QB for possibly 10 plus years. I am hoping he falls to number 7.
