“It’s How You Finish”

March 13th, 2014

Lovie Smith soothed the Mike Glennon Mob this morning

An interesting revelation this morning by Lovie Smith was that he enjoys listening to “talk radio.” In the context of his conversation on WDAE-AM 620, it was clear Lovie was talking about the beloved bellowing, analysis and fan ranting of sports radio.

It’s something Lovie says he did plenty of in his Illinois basement after getting booted by the Bears. Man, Lovie must have a strong stomach, especially if he was watching film of the Bucs’ pass rush.

(Perhaps Lovie will be tuned in when Joe joins the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, Steve Duemig of WDAE, later at 5 p.m. for a rescheduled JoeBucsFan Hour?)

Also this morning, Lovie wanted to clarify to fans that backup quarterback Mike Glennon is still important. The reasoning was obvious: “It’s how you finish,” said Lovie, who reminded everyone that if new Bucs No. 1 quarterback Josh McCown falters or goes down, then the Bucs will need to lean on their depth chart.

Enjoy Lovie’s full audio below. He makes it clear again that the Bucs wanted to keep Darrelle Revis, which remains a somewhat mind-blowing concept.

  1. Harry Says:

I am a little concerned we have not had any significant signings for offense; in particular the O-line and the slot receiver. Lovie never did develop an O-line in Chicago. Lets hope he has more success with the Bucs.

  2. stanglassman Says:

Changing the starting QB isn’t significant?

  3. Couch Fan Says:

You and me both Harry. Right now there is no balance it seems. I am guessing that the draft will be mainly offense focused. At least I hope so.

  4. Meh Says:

Changing from one backup QB to another backup QB isn’t significant.

  5. Bucnjim Says:

It looks like they wanted to complete the defensive side of the ball before working on the offense. Nice additions to the D and I’ll bet we’re not done yet.

  6. Mazz Says:

At this point I don’t see any way we do not draft Matthews or Robinson. Which ever one of them is there at 7. Guessing Matthews

  7. theDON Says:

    emmanuel sanders, ted ginn,

  8. Meh Says:

We won’t take Robinson. It is looking like they’re moving to more zone blocking. We’ll need guys lighter on their feet. If Matthews is there he’s a realistic possibility, especially if we don’t end up with Collins.

  9. The_Buc_Realist Says:

just heard a rumor that Patriots will try and trade Mallet for a “higher” draft pick, and then will try to aquire Glennon with a lower draft pick.

  10. stanglassman Says:

Guess that’s where we differ I like Mike G but I do think Josh is a big upgrade. Either way knowing the you have two QBs that can play on the team helps you out going into the draft so you can take the best player available. I always thought Lovie would bring in Vets in His system on Def and they will draft more for the Offense. But it’s not over they still way pick up a WR and OL.

  11. Meh Says:

Well they have to pick up some OL whether its in FA or the draft. We have no guards now.

  12. robert6 Says:

another day another MGM rag piece.

    wearing thin, very thin…..

  13. biff barker Says:

We may draft a QB after all.

Trade Glennon, trade down in the first, pick up a 2nd and draft Garrafolo?

  14. biff barker Says:

Lovie took a beating yesterday after PFT put an article up on McCown being his guy.
Reading through the comments, it seems like the G Mob is a National phenomenon!
Except in Tampa Bay. Our fans gave that moron Freeman 4 years but won’t give Glennon one full season with one decent offense around him.

  15. Barry Says:

Why you wouldn’t go with a young , better QB in MG8 over a over the hill never has been McCown is amazing to me. But we are talking about Lovie.

  16. rdbucfan Says:

Another hit piece on MG8 by the Josh McCown Clown Posse. I bet when the clowns gather at 5 today it will be a laugh fest about MG8 and a total on your knees service for McCown.

  17. Mr. T Says:

Great interview. Well from what Lovie said it appears he’s keeping Glennon but not as the initial starter. And if McCown disappoints or gets injured then put him in. So if we draft a QB then we’re keeping 3 on the roster it seems. We’ll see how this all plays out. Really like how things are going as a whole so far.

  18. flmike Says:

The only thing I see McCown having over Glennon is 12 years of ridin’ the pine and learning the game, the phyiscal tools are all in Glennon’s favor, I’m willin’ to bet a lightly used Revis jersey that Glennon wins the starting job…

  19. Bucsfanman Says:

Biff- You seem torn. In one post you say “trade Glennon” in the next you comment on how fast fans want him gone.
Why would you trade him? He’s a young QB with legitimate starting experience. I’m completely perplexed at how quickly we’re ready to show the door to a QB who as a rookie had ZERO help; No OL, 1 receiver, 4th string RB. And Yet, manages to be the top rookie QB in the league(on the worst freakin’ offense!!!).
Why can’t Glennon also benefit or improve from this? I think the whole team benefits from these signings. Having a solid veteran should help him grow.
I don’t care who the starter is as long as we win. Can we stop bagging on the guy?!

  20. tickrdr Says:

Congrats to Joe, they finally listened and got JM on the team……Josh McCown!

It’s a good thing that the opposing defense doesn’t matter, because JM threw for 6 TD’s against Minn and Dallas last season, the 31st and 32nd ranked passing defenses in the league. I’m practically certain he won’t miss Marshall (100 recs for 1295 yds, 12TDs), Jeffery (89 for 1421, 7TDs), Bennett (65 for 759, 5TDs), and Forte (74 for 594, 3TDs).

  21. pick6 Says:

@tickrdr wow…i think glennon might have looked a wee bit better delivering the ball to that crew with marc trestman calling the plays.

  22. Yeah It's me! Says:

There working on making the Offense better now. Just signed our NEW LT,QB. brought in a TE. There looking a WR’s,C, yesterday and today and probably till season starts. We already have our#1 and #2 WR’s (they still might upgrade either one).We have 3 RB’s.2 half way decent TE’s already. And we have the draft. Calm down people. Give them time. GO BUCS!!!

  23. Yeah It's me! Says:

No matter what they do half of you people are still bitching for one reason or another. “My favorite QB is’nt starting” or whatever. Some of you make me sick. No one cares if you like what Lovie & Licht does. Your not a head coach or GM and never will be so just shut the pie hole.Your never gonna get everything your way. Hehe! GO BUCS!!!

  24. Bucfan#37 Says:

Two backup QB’s is always better than one. We can all take competition, but to trade Glennon to the Patriots would be the stupidest move by Lovie and company.

  25. Sqeeky Says:

Let’s say Joe that Your new “Josh” F’s the duck and Lovey benches him, are we going to hear you and your favorite dog get on his ass right out of the gate again?
