Cross Michael Bennett Off Wish List

Former Bucs sackmeister and current Seattle DE Michael Bennett Twittered out this photo of his signing a contract extension with the Super Bowl champs this afternoon.

If Joe had one wish this free agent season (that’s a new term Joe just coined: free agent season) it was that Seattle defensive end Michael Bennett be scooped up by new Bucs general manager Jason Licht. That way, Licht would have righted a terrible wrong when last year Bennett, who led the Bucs in sacks in 2012, was allowed to walk away for no good reason.

Alas, that is not going to happen. The Seahawks weren’t that dumb. Today, Bennett signed an extension with the Super Bowl champions — his team — and is still in the fold of the Seahawks.

Terms of the deal have not been announced but Bennett loudly proclaimed to whoever would talk to him that he was not giving anyone a “hometown discount” as he had his Super Bowl ring and was now going for the cash.

“This ain’t Costco or Walmart,” Bennett boasted of his contract demands.

And still, the Bucs have yet to be able to replace him (or Simeon Rice for that matter).

Joe’s a bit melancholy lamenting one of the greatest mistakes of the former rockstar general manager Mark Dominik era.

Joe talked to Bennett at Super Bowl media day for a long time, and Bennett surely was happy with the Bucs and close pal Gerald McCoy but he also was very happy in Seattle.

The stable of available, quality defensive ends is getting thinner, and the Bucs desperately need one.

Congrats to him. Hard work does pay off.

  2. bucfanjeff Says:

Pretty good for a “bad shoulder”.

Truth is, we weren’t getting him anyway. He was going for cash with Seattle and got it. He wasn’t leaving there and everyone knew it. He played the game like he should and got paid.

  3. Patrick in VA Says:

Looks like Seattle is still using fax machines as well. When are they gonna learn

  4. theDON Says:

    dumb bux, let him go

  5. snook Says:

    4 years, 28.5 million. $10m in 2014. 2 others offered more.

  6. jr Says:

Well count me on the who gives a shit list. He ain’t that good. Really he’s not. Call me when he has double digit sack seasons. Key word seasons.

  7. Fishfries Says:

Seahawks are in prime position for a repeat. Meanwhile Bucs will most likely push extremely hard for Johnson.

  8. Ricky D Says:

    Damn Damn Damn!

  9. snook Says:

    Seahawks won’t repeat.

Everyone always thinks the SB champ is primed to repeat. How often does it actually happen?

The target on your back weighs A LOT.

  10. LUVMYBUCS Says:

*Get it son-son, so deserved it ! Value signing the club & extra spending money- to put your girls through college. Cheers 2 U MB!

  11. bucbucbuc Says:

not surprised, never really looked like he would return to tampa.

Joe – any comments on the McCluster rumors?

  12. scotty Says:

I also think we are pushing hard for Johnson! good job Bennett good luck.

  13. Jerry Says:

Seahawks will have trouble keeping the team together after next year. Most of their big names are on rookie contracts that will demand a lot of money when those contracts are up. Russell Wilson for example is going to cost Flacco-like money. And Richard Sherman is going to want Revis-like money.

Seahawks may look smart right now by being young and cheap. But free agency is going to tear that team up.

  14. StAugBuc Says:

    @bucbucbuc:

Where did you see this McCluster news?

  15. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Jerry

Their GM is a genius though. Everybody was calling the man an idiot-Because his methods are unconventional-But dudes a Beast!

  16. Jordon Says:

According to rotoworld.com, the Bucs are pushing hard for DE Michael Johnson from the Bengals.

  17. LUVMYBUCS Says:

O issh. LT Anthony Collins (28) supposebly turned down a 7 mil (per year) offer form the Bengals-He wants $9 or more on FA market

  18. StAugBuc Says:

    @Jordon:

You forgot to set your clock forward . . . 2 days! 🙂

  19. Buc Fan #237 Says:

NEWS: Bucs to sign Anthony Collins…. tomorrow at 4 pm.

    Google it.

  20. Jordon Says:

Panthers trying to trade Steve Smith….

  21. StAugBuc Says:

    Jordan, do you have Tourettes?

  22. Commonjoe Says:

Redirection to the App Store is annoying. Also, pft never had to add the read more link to get more views. Miss the old no money making joe.

Fires, the redirect for mobile users doesn’t happen all the time, and it certainly doesn’t happen to everyone. It does happen to Joe. And it’s really not a big deal. Eventually, Joe will be able to figure out how to stop it permanently. Second, PFT’s entire site is “read more”. You read their headline and click to read more. Let’s stop arguing about clicks. Joe has a very user-friendly site. –Joe

  23. Buc Fan #237 Says:

If Collins gets 9 mil per, then cutting Penn at 8 mil per, would essentially be a 1 million dollar deal for our bottom line…. LOVE IT!

  24. Buc1987 Says:

I stayed in Seattle for a month and it sucks more than Tampa. Enjoy it Bennett!

Yippeeee skippeeee free agency is here.

Who else is excited for tomorrow?

  25. zam Says:

if he doesn’t perform well (which happens a lot after the big payday for players) then I’m glad the Bucs didn’t sign him. It would hurt too much having made two mistakes with the same player.

And sorry to break this to ya, but “Free Agent Season” is at least as old a term as 2003: http://reds.enquirer.com/2003/11/11/wwwred2afree.html

  26. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Buc1987

I know to each his own-Everytime we stay in Seattle-We have a great time. Next time u there -hit up Vancouver (BC). Great Food-Great Beer-Good People-Good Times

  27. Andrew 1 Says:

Eh, no biggie. Good player, but not a premier pass rusher. Lets go get one.

  28. Andrew 1 Says:

And if the rumors are true, the bucs wont be signing Jared Allen. Kind of a bummer, but there are still other options.

  29. buchead407 Says:

Hey Joe, what do you think of cromartie if we can get a good deal. Big physical corner I think he’s still good just played hurt last year. Any thoughts?

  30. buchead407 Says:

It worked well for the jets with Revis and cromartie, I think we can sign him to a one year deal reasonably cheap. With lovie and revis to recruit

  31. killian Says:

Sooo, what about “not taking a hometown discount?”

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I said this would happen two months ago. Not a surprise at all. That’s part of the reason I never agreed we should bring him back.

  33. Macabee Says:

Hindsight is 20/20. But the reality is we should have signed him last year at 4 year 24mil and we would have had him for three more years playing hard trying to get a bigger deal than the one he just got.

Never look back tho, remember the sob’s may be gainin’ on ya!

  34. Snook Says:

I’d much rather see JBF laid out like PFT than it is now. It looks even more cluttered now with all the half stories on the main page. Either do all headlines or do all full stories. Much much cleaner.

Joe appreciates your feedback, but they’re not “half stories” at all. Joe likes things the way they are now. And things will be changing a little more later this year. –Joe

  35. bigpoppabuc Says:

Bennett was never on my wish list. Gholston is the new Bennett in Tampa. We need a dominant blind side rusher like Allen.

  36. Destinjohnny Says:

Dom blew it so hArd with mike, we could have signed him to a 4 year 4 million a year contract all day- it sorta pisses me off

  37. Patrick in VA Says:

PFT is reporting that Revis will be cut Wednesday if he can’t be traded first. Didn’t think we were headed that way but it speaks to a major overhaul coming after a couple days of negotiations with free agents. If they’re trying to clear up that cap room now I’d say it means they’ve got a few folks they’re bringing in. Pretty interesting. It’ll be a fun next few days

  38. Patrick in VA Says:

Disregard that. My browser didn’t show that I was way behind everyone else evidently. My thoughts on the matter still stand though, for what it’s worth

  39. Mumbles Says:

    OK!
