The QB Question
January 6th, 2014Lovie Smith will be peppered with questions for the first time as Bucs head coach/personnel chief today, and Joe is most curious to hear how Lovie talks about the quarterback position.
Lovie can direct the perception game all sorts of ways.
Will Lovie heap love on Mike Glennon and craft a perception/smokescreen for the rest of the NFL that Glennon is the man?
Joe would bet a few bucks on that. If the Bucs are looking to trade for a quarterback, score one in free agency, or trade up or down to draft one, then that’s what you want out there. You want to deal from a position of strength. You want teams to believe Glennon is beloved.
Yes, perhaps Lovie really is enamored with Glennon. But Joe wouldn’t wager on that being reality.
Or, Lovie could reference the “C” word — competition — while praising Glennon. That’s what Greg Schiano rolled out last year at this time, saying he was seeking competition at all positions, including quarterback, which signaled the beginning of the end for the sleepy, leaky, Rip Van Freeman era.
That kind of take sends a healthy message to the Bucs roster, and it doesn’t hurt your bargaining position on the market too much.
There’s also a chance Lovie distances himself from Glennon by saying he hasn’t evaluated the team yet. Of course, that would be baloney; there’s no way Lovie didn’t provide Team Glazer with detailed analysis of the quarterback position and the Bucs offense when he interviewed for the job.
Lovie also could deflect quarterback questions and opt to turn them into praise of his new quarterback-friendly offensive staff, specifically offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford and Marcus Arroyo.
Watch for how Lovie handles various versions of the QB question. Joe will break them down later.

Lovie knows that you can win with Glennon. You’ll see
January 6th, 2014 at 12:02 pm
I like Glennon for a backup role. He should not be the starter for the Bucs unless there is an injury, he just is a boring average QB. Nothing stands out.
Grab a young QB in the draft, like Manziel or Bortles and have a QB with a much higher ceiling.
January 6th, 2014 at 12:08 pm
Im guessing something along the lines of “were going to evaluate every position once our staff is in place”.
Not much info will be obtained.
Id be shocked if e proclaimed Glennon is our guy and I took the job to have the opportunity to work with him.
January 6th, 2014 at 12:14 pm
You want teams to believe Glennon is beloved.
——————————
Our local media and wonderful fan based has already ruined that.
January 6th, 2014 at 12:22 pm
Id rather keep Glennon as a back-up at very least…he’s earned that, and I’d rather him go out and play over Orlovsky any day of the week. Why trade away what is at very least a very competent backup when we could trade one of our 3 competent running backs to the same effect?
January 6th, 2014 at 12:27 pm
I sure hope Lovie doesn’t tie himself to Glennon the way he did to Grossman. It would be a huge mistake.
January 6th, 2014 at 12:29 pm
To see how important the QB position is, all you have to do is look at the teams that are still alive in the playoffs and the teams that are picking high in the draft
January 6th, 2014 at 12:29 pm
Bortles is now all in. He could still be there at #7 overall. Derek Carr has family roots to Tedford in his brother, David. If we go BPA in round 1, I would love to see us get Wyoming Junior Brett Smith on board to compete with Glennon. This guy is the closest thing to Manziel there is. He also reminds many of Aaron Rodgers. I suggest you guys check Smith out on youtube, he has 8 games on there from the past two seasons and he looks like a potential star.
January 6th, 2014 at 12:35 pm
I’d be real surpised if they draft a QB at #7 after the fiasco with Freeman. They can’t afford to have 2 first round busts in 5 years. They should bring in Flynn to compete with Glennon.
Draft Sammy Watkins. He is the real deal and will keep defenses honest. Get healthy with Martin, James and Williams. Bring in an OT and OG in free agency. Bring in Hardy or Jared Allen for edge rush. Get another cornerback and cut Johnson.
They would be a much better team and Glennon will do well with that.
January 6th, 2014 at 12:37 pm
Lovie will just say they like Glennn but have a lot of film to watch and study
January 6th, 2014 at 12:38 pm
Glennon*
January 6th, 2014 at 12:38 pm
Sammy Watkins, the questions should be how they plan to get that kid the ball after they draft him.
January 6th, 2014 at 12:40 pm
Glennon had an aging Vincent Jackson, a offense from the 1950’s, no other weapons at all, and you guy’s don’t think he played well, despite all of that? None of these rookies could come in and play better from day one, in my opinion, especially if he makes a big improvement from year 1 to year 2.
January 6th, 2014 at 12:40 pm
Thanks, Patrick, but this is not a message board. Please understand.–Joe
January 6th, 2014 at 12:49 pm
Glennon needs competion, but to say he cant be our starter or be successful is kind of premature. Glennon has the work ethic, smarts, leadership, and skills. He has alot to learn as do all young qbs but the question can we win with him. I really really hope we can but it will depend on the kind of offense we are going to have.
January 6th, 2014 at 12:49 pm
We will evaluate every player at every position once our staff is fully assembled….yadda yadda yadda
January 6th, 2014 at 12:56 pm
@Joe
That’s fine. Just making a topical point for discussion about the importance of the QB position. Hopefully you read it before you deleted it
January 6th, 2014 at 12:58 pm
Watkins is the real deal and would add another dimension to the offense.
Side note: GO NOLES! Prediction 45-20, game will never be close. You will see a complete game from FSU, much like the clemson game.
January 6th, 2014 at 12:58 pm
Lovie has a plan. He’s had one just like the bucs had a plan after going 0-8. It’s like everything has been written for months now. But I’m excited to hear how this story will unfold. One thing for sure is Lovie isn’t gonna BS us like schiano did. Not gonna lie Schiano made me feel stupid sometimes.
January 6th, 2014 at 1:01 pm
This next season is so well put together. The schedule is favorable, our team will have plenty of coaches/teachers to aid in their development. Oh and how about Derrick Brooks getting in the HOF and gettin his number retired just like sapp on a Monday night (that last one is a prediction but seriously how can that not happen!) I’m telling ya this season will be one we will never forget!
January 6th, 2014 at 1:01 pm
He just need to defer the question to Tedford… Lovie shouldn’t interfere with offense at all..
January 6th, 2014 at 1:02 pm
Just woke up here on the west coast, had this great dream:
I’m listening to Gene Derkerhoff internet broadcast of a Bucs game and he says, “The pass is away……Glennon to Watkins deep down the middle…….he catches it in stride……jukes right for the pylon…..no one’s going to catch him……….TOUCHDOWN!!!! GLENNON TO WATKINS, FIRE THE CANNONS!!!! BUCS WIN, BUCS WIN!!!!!
Woke up mad though when I looked to the sideline and saw an offensive holding flag had been thrown right in front of Schiano….he was still coaching the team! Thank God it was only a dream.
Can’t wait to hear your press conference Lovie, GO BUCS!

Sounds like me last July!
I’m not getting caught in that trap again.

I don’t think any QB could succeed with the crappy O-line and worn out weapons Glennon had to work with. Not saying Glennon is the man, but for a rookie, with the garbage he had to work with, he didn’t do that badly.
I suspect Joe has been working more on his Photoshop skills with more Johny “Spoiled Rotten” Football pictures in a Bucs uniform.
In regards to the PC @ 2, I really don’t think we will hear anything detailed. Just the usual “glad to be here”, “Thank you Glazers”, “bring championship to Tampa”. Lovie has played this media game before and knows what to say and what not to say.

@JOE
Joe Cullen D-line coach, solid hire
January 6th, 2014 at 1:59 pm
will this be on Nfl network or espn?
January 6th, 2014 at 2:04 pm
He really did do that badly.
January 6th, 2014 at 2:10 pm
Probably NFL Network. Can’t speak to BSPN.
January 6th, 2014 at 2:12 pm
Glennon couldn’t hit Vjax in stride deep no way he can hit Watkins in stride. Please Lovie get a franchise QB. I know you can’t tell us today but please.
January 6th, 2014 at 2:42 pm
Lovie please tell Vern that there are no franchise QB’s in this draft.
January 6th, 2014 at 2:44 pm
1987,
Are we going to have this conversation again?
January 6th, 2014 at 2:46 pm
One thing is for sure, Lovie doesn’t play that whole manipulative game with his words.
He’s an honest man, who says the truth.
So, I expect to hear what he’s actually feeling.
Dungy didn’t play those games with the media, I don’t expect Lovie to.
January 6th, 2014 at 2:49 pm
Where did all the pewter punch go? Glennon is great…Lovie is great…one draft and a Superbowl….another round, please.
January 6th, 2014 at 2:51 pm
We just don’t wanna join the perennial whiners, that’s all 😉
January 6th, 2014 at 2:51 pm
PR Bucs…do you remember what Tony used to say? I listened to all those interviews….”we have to play better” was the most you would here from Tony, and almost on a weekly basis when we lost. Truthful? Yes. But we all knew that already.
January 6th, 2014 at 2:52 pm
Excuse me…hear of course. Tony never lied…but don’t think for a second he told you everything he thought.
January 6th, 2014 at 2:52 pm
And? lol
What does that have to do with what I said? lmao
So truthful = losers? bwahaha
Your a funny guy
January 6th, 2014 at 2:53 pm
Auburn…hate em. Fla. St….hate em worse. Go Tigers, secure another SEC national title and extend the SEC stranglehold on winning the big game.
January 6th, 2014 at 2:54 pm
Just stop lol, your making yourself look silly.
My point was pretty clear, I’m done even talking to you ahahaha.
January 6th, 2014 at 2:54 pm
Next thread lol.
January 6th, 2014 at 2:56 pm
Look at the way the Rays do things. A good manager of personnel plays the game, if there is better, he should upgrade this year. If there is not, he should improve his team elsewhere. I am not sure any of these QB’s coming out of college are guarantee’s. But, if one of the top 3 or 4 were available at draft, i would probably take a shot, if not I would fill other holes.
January 6th, 2014 at 3:00 pm
You know what will be funny….
I remember when Tony was on the sidelines, looking Stoically while we ran three times up the middle and punted. And at the end of the game, after alose, he would never change that expression. No word, but we “have to play better”. It didn’t bother me much, but many fans, as I recall, went somewhat ballistic. Remember Clyde? Boy did the fans roast him.
Get ready to relive those memories.
January 6th, 2014 at 3:05 pm
PR…you said Lovie wouldn’t manipulate his words and says the truth…he doesn’t have to…all he has to say is that he will give Glennon a chance to have the starting job. That doesn’t make him a liar, but doesn’t mean he won’t “tailor what he says to mean nothing but the obvious”. It doesn’t mean that is what he really thinks will happen. So what is the difference between saying that and saying nothing? Your point was rather meaningless.
January 6th, 2014 at 3:06 pm
what’s so bad about being a “boring” pocket passer? in the last 7 years, 5 SBs have been won by teams whose QB mainly drops back and lets it rip – Aaron Rodgers and Rothlisberger being the 2 who are more improvisational in their approach. moreover, 4 of those 5 games were won by QBs (Brees, Eli, Flacco) who would’ve looked worse (or did look worse) than Glennon under these circumstances in their rookie campaigns. i bet if any of those guys came into the league with Glennon’s draft status, they would’ve had the majority of fans eager to turn the page. i’m not saying glennon is guaranteed to win superbowls, just that most QBs who get there are “boring” pocket passers, many of whom did not look close to elite in their rookie seasons.
January 6th, 2014 at 4:28 pm
My hope is that we can get Sammy Watkins if he’s available when we pick. Other than VJ n mike Williams the backups suck. There’s a player out of Kent St by the name of Dri Archer who reminds me of the Eagles Desean Jackson. This kid plays with tenacity. His only knock is size…5’8 176. However, he’s tough as nails n has good hands. He’s a speedster 4.21-4.35. We should take him in the later rounds. We should play him the way the Saints play Sproles. This would be a steal. Spread the offense n take pressure off of Glennon.
January 6th, 2014 at 5:09 pm
Dmatt. That is the way I would hope we can go in the first round. You need at least 4 good receivers in this day and age…the three receiver package, and a young one learning the system and possibly playing punt or kick off returns. We have two.
