Gerald McCoy weighs in on drafting Johnny Football
Everybody’s got a take on Johnny Football, and that includes Bucs back-to-back Pro Bowler Gerald McCoy.
Asked on Jay Mohr Sports today whether Johnny Football could be a good pro quarterback drafted by Tampa Bay with the seventh overall pick in the 2014 draft, McCoy didn’t do a wacky Greg Schiano line stunt with the question; he bull rushed it.
“That depends on the Johnny Manziel you get, I believe,” McCoy said. “Are going to get the one who plays for the Aggies, or the one outside of that? Because once you get to the NFL, you can’t, I mean, he’s going to bring a circus with him regardless, because of his quote-unquote off-the-field issues. But when this guy steps on the field he performs.
“But can he focus under pressure?
“College pressure is completely different pressure than the NFL. NFL is an unheard of pressure. And if you are drafted as high as No. 7, you’re the franchise guy. And are you willing to put in the work and take over a team as a rookie? And that’s going to be left on him. So me, personally, I think he has all the gifts and talent to be that. But it just depends which Johnny Manziel you get.”

People, including NFL players, can’t divide themselves into two different people…one for work and one for play. You are who you are. Period. We don’t have to wonder which of Joe’s JFF’s we’d get because we already know: the same exact one we’ve already seen.

As an aside, has anyone else noticed how McCoy is suddenly opening up and being totally frank in the media now that Schiano is gone? I’ll bet that Lovie removed the Belichick-inspired shackles from his players and told them they are free to express themselves. How refreshing. I’m liking this new regime already.

Didn’t we release a franchise quarterback this season who had “off the field issues”? I have never heard about Joe’s mancrush and his studying habits. But that seems to be the biggest difference between a franchise QB and a QB…. how much time you put in off the field. No matter the talent.

That’s a little unfair, McCoy never made a direct (or even indirect for that matter) reference to military service.
I think it would be safe to say that McCoy meant compared to anything Manziel has experienced to date (unless he has some Military service in his background I’m unaware of).
The people athletes/entertainers who compare themselves to military or even law enforcement should be called out on it, but that’s not the case here.

Some believe he will be great in the NFL, some think he will be a failure. I don’t see him being successful between getting hurt and off field personality (remember…he will be the “Face of a Franchise”) The Bucs cant afford to take JF and he ends up being a big failure. Not after the 5 years we just went threw. It will probably be a Make or Break pick for whatever GM & Team that takes him. I sure would rather miss out on him if he is Mega Successful than have him and it’s a Complete Failure. we would continue to be a laughing stock to most around the NFL. Just not worth it.

i remember years ago in a league far far away, there was a quarterback nobody gave a chance-he was younng-brash-opinionated-cocky-loved to party-and loved the ladies.he also loved the spotlight,the big stage-and when his big day finally came he was facing down the best team in the league,with the best qb-an h.o.f. to be quarterback,who was mature-steady,established,patriotic and well groomed-no chance this up start young brash qb hippie type could pull it off,so he gave a gaurantee and backed it up!his name was joe-and he became a legend.no not montana,if thats what your thinking-broadway joe was the man-and namath became legend! bring on the circus-go get manziel

If you draft Manziel with the 7th pick you are instantly making him the face of the franchise. Does Lovie want to hitch his horse to that wagon? I would say probably not, unless he’s absolutely convinced Manziel will be the consummate pro. That’s impossible to predict at this point.

Manziel is definitely a wild card. The kid’s a gamer on the field, there’s no questioning that. His will be a case of chance; who’s willing to take it?

Just FYI Buc1987, Vinny played for 21 years in the NFL. While he may not have the accolades, lumping him in with the other losers you mention is totally out of bounds. 21 years, I’m just saying!

When you think about it, the league needs a guy like Johnny. We’ve become so accustomed to the “gentlemen-ly” players like the Mannings and Brees’s. Think about why Kaepernick is so popular. Is it really because he is sooo good or is it that he’s the anti-hero, the opposite of those guys I mentioned. We don’t have any more “bad guys” in football. Gone are the Jim McMahons and the Joe Namaths with all their swag. Heck, I’ve even found myself missing Favre and all of his drama. There’s a cockiness to this guy that makes you hate him with a passion, but yet can’t help but be mesmerized by his performance. It’s like a car crash, you just can’t help it!
Does any of this make him a good NFL QB? Of course not. He’ll have to cut his teeth just like everybody else. But stop fooling yourself and admit, this dude is fun to watch. Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised either way, bust or wild success.
Frankly, I can’t see the Bucs drafting him because clearly there are larger holes to fill(no pun intended OL). If they did though, what a wild ride that’ll be!

I was for letting Glennon start next year but the more I think about it the more I want a dual threat guy. Watching Cam, Kaepernick and Wilson and just the way they move in the pocket with a threat to run and then throw over the top as defenders step up and leave their man to stop the run. It’s exciting and creates so many opportunities. I’m not saying to move up to get Johnny Football but I’m getting on the draft a QB bandwagon if one of the top 3 falls to us at 7.
