It’s Leslie Frazier As Defensive Coordinator

Leslie Frazier will lead the Bucs defense.
Just because one works for BSPN and has a high profile doesn’t mean what comes from his mouth or fingers is Gospel.
Despite what BSPN’s Adam Schefter reported as fact the other night, Cowboys defensive line coach Rod Marinelli will not be the Bucs defensive coordinator. Instead, it is former Vikings coach and Rip Van Freeman victim Leslie Frazier who will lead Lovie Smith’s charges.
That’s the word of authority by way of Twitter from Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune.

Joe has been lukewarm all along with the hiring of Lovie, the naming of Jeff Tedford as offensive coordinator and now the hiring of Frazier as defensive coordinator. Hiring Marinelli would have made Joe excited. Alas, Joe just shrugs.
But Joe knows Bucs fans love names they recognize, especially if they are connected to Father Dungy. So here goes. Before he became defensive coordinator in Minnesota, Frazier worked for Father Dungy in Indianapolis as a defensive backs coach for two seasons.

These hirings are a win win Joe.
If the Bucs win, then everyone is happy.
But, if this turns out to be a colossal failure, then the Dungy family tree of coaches and the Tampa-2 will lose it’s legacy status in this modern era. So if you are doubting this move, then there is an opportunity to be upbeat regardless the outcome.

Agreed Joe. Going out and prying Marinelli to be our DC would have been the most exciting thing to happen since Schiano was canned. At this point, until we get ourselves a quarterback there is not going to be much to be excited about.

By all accounts Marinelli is a great defensive football, he has a proven track record as such with Lovie and he helped send Sapp into the Hall.

I love this hire! As much as I would have loved Marinelli if not more.
For a positional hire, Frazer brings leadership and experience in the fact he was once an HC of a non 0-16 team like Marinelli once was with the Lions…
The fact Frazer will run Lovie’s defense, all the experience and leadership he brings, I think it’s the best hire available.

I love hiring former head coaches for coordinators. No matter how bad they are at HC, they got that job for some reason. And most reason is they kicked ass at their coordinator job. For example Norv Turner, Wade Phillips, and Rex Ryan. I didn’t know anything about Lezlie before he became head coach of the Vikings, so I looked him up. He has a very, very impressive resume.
I for one, am very excited about this hire. ALL his defenses have improved greatly with him being there.
And just to put a cherry on top, he was with the 85 Bears, and in the Super Bowl shuffle video. That kicks ass with a tasty groove!!

Lovie Smith knows what he’s doing…..he should have a DC that will compliment his experience. Our defense would have improved next year even with Schiano/Sheridan….is there anyone that thinks it won’t be better with Smith/Frazier?

I was luke warm about the Lovie hire, but his staff so far is very intriguing. Tedford has a good possibility so be good, and Lezlie has already proved he is good at DC. And that’s what everyone wants right? A proven coach. Well Lezlie is proven. So far, I’m totally OK with the way this offseason is going.

Its players like Banks, Foster, Gholston, Spence & AC that need to improve…and I think they will.
Your point about former HCs is very valid…sometimes a person just isn’t cut out for the next level and when they fail at it, they are more content with their new responsibility.
There is evidence of that all over the league.

Our defense is going to be intimidating with a “Lovie” and a “Leslie” leading the way, they had to be tough. I really like the way the staff is shaping up, unlike two years ago. I would like to see maybe Brian Cox, Ernest Byner and maybe even Bostad return(he did great with a make shift line 2012), probably won’t happen though. Let’s get this ship going forward.
Admittedly I was on board with Schiano hiring until Rutgers took over, good to see that coaching element gone.

Que589 I completely agree. It seems many folks wanted “somebody” and then list the numerous requirements. I expect the same will happen when the new GM is named on Monday. After two failed attempts to think outside of the box, the Glazers needed to hire an experienced NFL head coach. The number of realistic options, and people please stop with the Gruden and Cowher noise, are not so great.
Lovie will restore some much needed credibility to the Bucs. After the last few seasons, it’s a start.

Frazier says he’s committed to joining the Bucs as DC. This will work out fine as Frazier will be in holding pattern for a year or two until his ticket comes up for HC again.
Marinelli has 1 year remaining on his contract in Dallas. When that time is up he will surely join Lovie in Tampa. Frazier could move into the role of Asst. HC and take on the role similar to Butch Davis. Marinelli can then become DC. These guys are wedded at the hip. It’s just a matter of time before the reunion!
If you remember, Marenelli was DC in Chicago when Lovie left. He was asked to stay on but refused because of his fierce loyalty to Lovie and the old Tampa2 brotherhood. When Lovie didn’t catch on he chose to take a demotion and go to Dallas with Kiffin as the D-Line coach.
Kiffin is being forced to retire and Jerry Jones is attempting to hold on to Marinelli to complete his transition to a 4-3 defense. With Kiffin gone, it is just a matter of time before Marinelli has a one-way ticket to Tampa and Jerrah can’t stop him. And don’t be surprised if Rich Bisaccia/ST coach is right behind him.

Not impressed with this staff so far….hope I am wrong….I’m right in line with Joe’s perspective. Here again, never said we shouldn’t get rid of Shiano/ Dom…but hoped after going through all that trauma, that we would move upward but seems we have made some improvement, but mostly moved sideways.

I can tell you this…after watching Fraiser and Smith stand on the sidelines during games while their teams consistently lost to the Packers the last few years up here, and really not seeing the “half time adjustments” you guys were looking for this year from Schiano, and without a Marinelli, you better drink a dozen cups of coffee rather than some beer while watching the game, or you might fall asleep before the end of the first quarter.

Lov it! Frazier is a quality DC. He has experience with the Tampa 2 but also was a CB on the historic ’85’ Bears. And was the DB coach for Reid in Philly under the late Jim Johnson. So Frazier has a working knowledge of many different systems which is good. Also Dungy hired him in Indianapolis as an Assistant Coach/DB Coach. Dungy’s main reason for hiring Frazier was to coach his young secondary; Frazier was able to improve the unit from 17th in passing to 2nd.
Frazier was an excellent coach for the Vikings and no Joe Freeman didn’t doom him; his GM did, from what I have read it was the GM who wanted Ponder and Freeman. Many believe it was the GM who should’ve gotten the ax not the coach.

Does anyone see that the one difference is at first we thought we had Marinelli coming to Tampa (Lovie and Tedford were already sown up) but now some feel that we are “settling” for Frazier. You see how influential that premature report concerning Marinelli’s arrival was? It seems that this has caused a step back in our enthusiasm. Does anyone else see this?

Despite enjoying the possibility of Marinelli roaming the sidelines and calling the Tampa Two coverages, I am at ease with this hire because Frazier has a proven track record of top 10 defenses and isn’t that the reason for a new coaching staff change anyways? To find experienced coaches with proven success. Good job, Bucs. There is something to be said about former Head Coaches coaching for others in that they really respect the other guy. Well done, Lovie.

Joe, I usually find myself in agreement with you, but not here. Frazier did a relatively great job in MN. Got them to the playoffs last year with Ponder at QB, and mostly thru being strong on D. I think its a great hire and from my point of view, it has nothing to do with the connection to Father Dungy.
Marinelli is still in play to coach the D-line as far as I know. Until Dallass decides what to do with Kiffin – there is a small chance Jones could still fire him – the Bucs would be a logical destination.

Frazier is a solid hire. Marinelli would’ve added a different element personality wise and he’s one of the best defensive line coach’s in the business, but Frazier is no slouch when it comes to coaching defense. It’ll be interesting to see how Lovie rounds out the staff with position coaches.

Sometimes it pains me to be a bucs fan when the majority of the fan base complains no matter what the situation is. When we had Dungy all of these so called fans would complain because we never got to the Super Bowl. The following year we won the Super Bowl with Gruden as head coach and Dungy’s team and again these fair weathered fans complained because Gruden did not win with his team. Then the tears following the Super Bowl win Gruden got axed for consistently making it to the play offs. Then everything went spiraling down hill with RaH, and Schiano. For those few REAL BUCS FANS we stick it out year in and year out and always hope for the best instead of surrounding our team with negativity and threats of becoming another teams fan. To those fair weathered fan I say good riddance this team does not need you. I Love these picks for our coaching staff. I do hope we pick up manziel regardless of what some of you may think of him he puts asses in the seats and he can perform. For those who compact him to Tebow has lost their minds. Tebow could barely make a 20 years throw and had horrible mechanics. Manziels stats speak for themselves.

I agree Jon the excellence that Lovie/ Frazier bring on the defensive side of the ball, albeit with very little emotion shown by them on the sidelines would be balanced by a Tedford/ Manziel excitement on the offense. It’s time for some winning Buc football… But fans would appreciate to be entertained as well. Manziel would provide that… Question ….how can we possibly get Manziel at our 7th draft position?

I had wanted Marinelli as well, but I’m totally cool with this hire. I think the two L’s will make a great team for the defense. I think players will want to play for them and they will get results. And if they can bring in players like Peppers or Allen for the line that only have a year or two left in the tank, that’s cool too. You only play one year at a time anyway, but Schiano and his 1 Game Seasons was really stupid. A game is a game and a season is a bunch of them. The players were always uncomfortable saying it too, you could tell by their voices.
I’m so glad that idiot coach is gone and just can’t trample on his grave enough.

Agreed Jon…..Bucs fans have been “putzing” around waiting for Freeman to develop. I really love Glennon , and his ceiling I believe will be higher than Josh’s but if we can get a QB with a higher ceiling potential we must do everything we can to get him to be a Buc. With Drew, Cam and Matt in our division it should be our first priority….. Glazers and Lovie…… Make it happen!

If we can somehow bring in Tillman to compliment revis, jared Allen to compliment GMC, pick up manziel, and a speedy receiver to compete with Jackson and Williams we will be set. Yea our O line needs help but this years draft doesn’t have that large of an Oline selection. I could just imagine the frustration that Brees, Newton, and Ryan would have trying to thrown while their receivers are being covered by Tillman and revis and with gmc and Allen in there faces all game. It would be really exciting to watch.

Architek…what ever that is…I said that wasn’t nearly what I expected when Schiano and Dom were fired. I expected a seasoned and successful GM, and with a little luck, a coach maybe that had won a SB. Marv Levy was a good coach, but I didn’t want him with a rookie GM either…and it appears that is what we will have. Wake up and stop seeing though your Pewter colored glasses….my Packer friends saw Lovie and Frasier up close the last few years…not impressed…actually surprised we would hire them. And I doubt there are, as a group, more knowledgeable fans as a whole than Packer fans are…at least in Wisconsin.

Traded our defrocked former franchise QB for the Vikings defrocked former HC. Hopefully we got the better deal. Still not 100% thrilled on the Lovie hire, but it’s probably a decent move to get Frazier as a DC and not have to potentially give up anything to a knucklehead like Jerry Jones just to get Rod out of his contract there. As always hopefully it works out for the Bucs or two years from now we’ll be starting the rebuilding process yet again.

Chef…I really don’t have anything against Frazer as an assistant. But I was hoping for a guy like Marinelli with more fire. The staff is made up of many personalities….Tomlin, Smith, Marinelli, Kiffin, and Dungy all had very different personalities….but they worked together to create a great coaching team. I don’t know we have that here. I don’t see the fire. Hope I’m wrong.

Though I understand, Joe, your hesitation with the hiring of a Tony Dungy “clone” (Historical philosophy of-Great Defense, boring offense) I believe this hire has a ton of potential for future Super Bowl appearance(s), and, at the very least, a definite upgrade in what we have had since the early part of the Jon Gruden era. Lovie’s last season as head coach he went 10-6. That’s “only” 6 more wins that we had this year. It would also seem to me that Coach Smith is well aware that he needs a more potent offense than what the Dungy tree has traditionally employed. He once hired former Rams offensive genius Coach Martz to run his offense, though it had mixed results, it shows that Lovie is not dogmatic about 3 yards and a cloud of dust style offense. Now he has hired OC Tedford, who appears to be somewhat innovative on offense, and widely considered to be a great QB coach, just ask Aaron Rodgers. Now we have the hiring of the DC, Leslie Frazier, another Dungy disciple, who is being compared with Rod Marinelli, who is another, you guessed it, Dungy disciple! When it comes to defense, I don’t really question Dungy’s tree, it is the offensive side that I may question. But let’s also not forget, Coach Dungy also is a Super Bowl Champion HC. Yes, he had Peyton Manning, but has Mr. Manning ever won a Superbowl with out Dungy? NO! interestingly, Tony’s first choice for his OC in Tampa was the same OC he eventually won a Super bowl with in Indy. Also, Mike Tomlin, yes, another Dungy Disciple, is also a Superbowl champ HC. It seems that the whole NFL world is excited for the Bucs, so I think we should be excited as well.

You people are kidding yourself.
Even though I wanted an offensive coach, I like the Lovie Smith hire.
I hate both coordinator hires though. Frazier was one of the worst coaches in football. He was worse than even Raheem was. He was a backstabber to his player and made nothing but bad choices.
Tedford has a winning record in college, but so did Schiano. Tedford ran college style offense…a lot of QB mobility and running the football. Even though he had a winning record, on a college level he sucked. That’s why he was fired. Good teams in college win 10-12 games each season. He did not even sniff that.
I figured Rod was a long shot, but there were better options. You want alternatives? I’ll give them.
HC – Brian Billick
DC – Herm Edwards
OC – Norv Turner
Even with Lovie as HC we could have had those guys as coordinators. What? You think Frazier is a lame duck coordinator holding a spot for Rod? Good luck getting production out of players on defense because if you can figure that out so can they.
I can and will get behind the Lovie Smith hire. I understand that one at least. But because there is no GM in place to help guide Lovie’s choices, he is settling.
I swear to God if Michael Vick becomes our QB now I will boycott my team next year. Why would he? Because everything else I didn’t want happening is doing so.
Newsflash…Schiano’s defensive staff was better.
I’m peeved and blowing off steam. I’m hoping to wrap my head around these bonehead moves.
You guys keep telling people to name alternatives. Thats the same as saying Lovie settled. So I return a challenge to you.
Convince me why these are good move without being dellusional. I want to feel good about this, but I don’t. The desire is there. Convince me.

Agreed on the Michael Vick part. Please dear Lord do not let that guys end up on the Bucs roster. Talk about changing the team culture yet again (this time for the worse).

Very happy with all the Hires. . I don’t think we could have found a better coach and staff. Leslie Frazier may have had some struggles as a HC, but he is an outstanding DC!
Unlike the last hire, this hire has me very excited about The teams future!

Here is what we’ll see. Lovie will seek out current or former bears assistants. Tedford will seek out college assistants…likely guys he worked with.
We’re going to have a college style offense.

He was a small college coach, in over his head. Said that day one. Was right.
I’m right about this one, also. Lovie Smith will make this team a contender. This will be a very good team,With his leadership.

I will never be negative towards anyone on our team until I see them in action. On paper this seems like a very good staff so far. I’m excited to see it all put together.

He was defensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals from 2003 to 2004 where he helped turn the unit into a group that increased takeaways from 24 in 2003 to 36 in 2004. The Bengals’ 36 takeaways ranked third in the NFL in 2004. The 2004 Bengals notched 20 interceptions, the most since 1996. The Bengals’ defense improved from 28th in the league in total yards allowed in 2003 to 19th in 2004, and declined in the two years following his dismissal.
He was specifically brought in by Dungy to help the Colts’ young corps of defensive backs. During his time in Indianapolis the Colts passing defense improved from 15th in 2005 to second in 2006.
And if you don’t like Frazier because he wasn’t a good Head Coach, how did Norv and Herm do as Head Coach. Not that great.

Couch…on paper this staff has never won a SB, other than as a position coach. We don’t even have a GM….so on paper, we don’t have much…yet.

Listened to Palakowski on the booger show talk about Tedford and his offenses and it’s got me stoked.
His offenses were prolific their words not mine. This is going to be a fun ride.

Schiano went 7 years straight with winning records. In all he was 68-67. That qualifies as a WINNING record.
In his last 7 years at Rutgers he went 56-33. Seven years is enough to establish a track record, which Schiano did.
So no…you were not right.

Oh yeah and technically speaking, if u want to go by how they did as head coach, Leslie never went 0-16 like Rod did.
Don’t get this confused with me not liking rod. I’m only defending Frazier. I wanted Rod more than Frazier, but I’m perfectly happy with Frazier

okay, you don’t want comparisons. I understand that. All I’m saying is you can’t judge a defensive coordinator by how he did as a head coach. Leslie did great as a defensive coordinator. Yes poorly as head coach. Its like if a guy works in the mail room and all mail is timely and accurate so they promote him to, let’s say, VP. Now if he sucks at VP that doesn’t mean he’s going to suck in the mail room now.

It does’nt matter what fans think about the new Lovie Bucs. The coaches have been hired. It will be a more exciting outlook waiting for next season than it was waiting for this past season.

Sorry to disagree with you Capt. Tim, but I would wager GMC’s two pro bowl appearances under Schiano’s tenure (where GMC admitted to learning how to tackle) don’t qualify as wasting two years of the man’s career. As far as Schiano’s record at Rutgers is concerned Bonzai is absolutely correct. Sometimes it takes a few years for a HC to turn around a mess of a program, the difference was Rutgers gave him more than two years to turn their mess into a winning program unlike Tampa did.
