Dolphins Hire Dennis Hickey

Well now. The Miami Dolphins made a big splash today when they hired a Buccaneer Man who was the right-hand man of a guy who got fired. Bucs director of player personnel Dennis Hickey is the new general manager of the Miami Dolphins.
Oddly enough, Hickey took a job that a few others passed on, including new Bucs general manager Jason Licht. Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald has all the details.
Hickey accepted the job this morning after multiple people turned down the offer, according to a source who decliend to say which people. It is known Nick Caserio turned down the job on Saturday.
Hickey succeeds Jeff Ireland, who mutually agreed with the team to leave after serving as GM since 2008. Interestingly, Hickey gets this shot despite not interviewing with Tampa Bay, the team he’s worked for 18 years, when that team looked for a GM this offseason.
So it looks like Licht will be hiring a new trusted confidant sooner than expected.
Joe knows former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik has had feelers put out to him for work. It will be interesting to see if Dominik decides to pull a Scott Pioli, where he takes off a season and does some TV work, or if Hickey lures Dominik to Miami to be his right-hand man and turn the Dolphins into Tampa Bay South.

Peter King was asked about the hire on Twitter and his response was he’s never met Hickey. Combine that with King’s preseason “visit” with the Bucs a few years ago, which consisted of stopping in to eat breakfast at One Buc and leaving without talking to anyone with the team, or his “sources” assuring him that Schiano would be retained, and you know why you shouldn’t take anything King writes about the Bucs seriously.

Not sure too many national guys make a point to talk to a guy like Hickey when they are bouncing between 20 different camps in three weeks.
Additionally, the Bucs media relations office would have to make Hickey available. Not like King can just walk up and knock on his door. Getting to talk to Hickey on the record was a rarity, even for the local guys.

It’s better that way. I understand Licht pov of giving everyone a chance but now he can hire a trusted employe who he already worked with.

good luck to dennis hickey…..nothing personal towards him who was always behind the scenes and basically shined a light on potential from college, im sure greg schiano didnt use him either because honestly who else had anything to do with drafting mike glennon. He’s simply not needed anymore, we have a gm that gets to do what he does best which is scout so were not losing someone that cant be replaced….good luck no i take that back because he was scouting for us so our scouting report will probably match his for the most part, if were competing and playing a chess game for players in later rounds nah he’s on the other side now so dolphins suck because they got beat by greg schiano coached team

Great point joe…..i have a feeling national media will be sniffing even more for stories this offseason, getting ready for bandwagon predictions even though all this season we were hearing that the bucs didnt have a talented roster

isnt shelton quarles in charge of the pro player side because if he is it would be a step down to go scout college instead of evaluating pro’s

I hope Dennis doesn’t take our guys in that department with him to Miami.

So Average that another team wanted him to be their GM. Really smart comment, care to share with us how you have this insight and opinion that nobody else seem to have of him?
I think this may slow the transition for the new GM and Coach down therefore disappointed to see him go. Hickey, Dominic and Mckay will always be Buccaneer men. I wish them all luck in the future unless we play their team.

We are no worse off with him leaving. Bucs didn’t even interview him for the open GM position. That should tell you quite a bit about his value.
Dolphins only interviewed him after every other breathing person had turned the job down. Being in the room when others make good selections doesn’t mean you know how to run the show.

I have a question Joe. This is one that truly baffles me and I seek the answer. If some of our executives are aware that they are likely going to be canned in April after the draft, how would that be a good thing for the Bucs organization? Doesn’t the knowledge of likely being without a job impair one’s astute ability to scout etc.?

Trick is, good luck putting together a reputable scouting staff this time of the year. Getting rid of the football operations staff now is pretty much p!ssing away an entire draft, much like Bruce Almighty and Chucky did regularly.

Fair enough, I guess. It’s the guys loyal to Hickey that are problematic now. If they will be following him to Miami, now we got a problem. They are already mentally checked out. Weeding these guys out or having them weeded out by Hickey and bringing in a couple of Licht guys needs to happen immediately.

If one knows they are not worthy of being retained, they might sandbag the scouting role. But this real life, if they haven’t been fired, they have a job to do. They will be working with the new coach/GM and trying to impress to keep their job.
And if that doesn’t work out, they don’t want word to get out they were sandbagging.

Agreed New Day TB,
You would have to expect these guys to act professional. It would behoove nobody to sandbag. In light of Licht’s willingness to keep staff on, you would be inclined to think that existing staff would take that seriously. The cream usually rises to the top. With that said, give me the guys that are here to stay ASAP. The sooner the staff is firmly in place without uncertainty of their roles, the better.

I’m glad Hickey is gone. It’s time for fresh blood. Stokes may get a Bump. When I met Dom a while back, Hickey was with him. Dom was cool and chatted it up while Hick was a dick and couldn’t leave fast enough. He won’t last in Miami.

Pissing away the draft is preferable to pissing away the season, which Mr. Dominik and crew were masterful at.
Unless of course one likes routine 8-10 game losing streaks and zero playoffs.

Ran into Mark Dominik in a suite at Billy Joel concert last week. He was tossing back a few cold ones (as we all were). I approached him, nice guy- asked him about his plans. He said he’s seriously looking at the tv analyst gig. Why wouldn’t he? No stress, good money, still on Bucs payroll. Gruden may never coach again because of it.
