Bucs Look Toward Gamble In Philly

January 11th, 2014

The Bucs appear to be widening their search for the right 1b to Lovie Smith’s 1a.

Longtime Eagles beat writer Les Bowen, of the Philadelphia Daily News, reports this morning that the Bucs will reach out to Eagles VP of player personnel Tom Gamble about their vacant general manager gig.

Gamble, whose father Harry was once Eagles’ GM and team president, joined the Eagles last season after the team recruited him from the 49ers front office, where he spent eight seasons and left as director of player and college personnel.

Losing Gamble would be a blow to Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, who pursued him for a few years as the replacement to Ryan Grigson, now general manager in Indianapolis. But Roseman, once criticized for a lack of personnel experience, has assembled a deep team in that area that includes former Steelers and Bills GM Tom Donohoe, former Saints player personnel director Rick Mueller and former University of Alabama personnel director Ed Marynowitz.

Gamble also is a former Jets assistant coach, and a scout for the Panthers, Colts and Ravens.

Bowen speculates that Gamble only would be interested in a GM job that offers him power over the roster.

I made a rant the other day under the article “Lovie Needs a Bad Guy” and as it turns out, I’m not that far off in my assessment of the division of labor between the HC and the GM. Below is a tweet from Adam Caplan.

This is a device created by the Glazers to get the HC and GM on the same page and to forge a close working relationship. As I said in my rant, with Lovie’s personality and the right GM, this should work with no problems!

  2. Patrick in VA Says:

Looks like a good candidate. I’m not sure that Lovie’s final say on the roster means the GM spot in Tampa wouldn’t have enough power to entice gamble. Lovie seems like the kind of guy that understands and respects the roles of the people he works with. I think w all heard “final say” and attributed a Greg schiano type dictatorial sort of thing to it. Strong leaders know that your job is to bring in smart, capable people and then you allow them to do their job and ensure they have the necessary told to perform. The GM that comes to work with us will be one that the organization believes on so I can’t see Lovie yelling him to sit in the corner and color when it comes to making roster decisions.

Hate gambling on Philly. Such a hateful city.

  4. Kirk Mattingly Says:

I don’t what the big deal is all about. The team is looking for a GM that can work in unison with Coach Smith. GM will locate possible talent upgrade, coach will determine the fit. What is so difficult to understand? Joe seems to be beating this horse to death. Lighten up dude, go drink another beer.

  5. Eric Says:

    I like that 49ers connection.

Remember they traded up for Kaepernick when they already had Smith, demonstrating the importance they placed on that position.

I’m pretty sure they are pleased with that decision.

All the Lovie power stuff is much ado about nothing. The article says Chip Kelly has same level of authority in Philly.

  6. Jon Says:

I like it too, thankfully he only traded for A. Benn and not Gaines Adams.

  7. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Maybe someone from the Bucs front office is also auditioning for the gig. Shelton Quarles comes to mind. Someone has got to be pulling strings right now to include signing those players the other day to future’s contracts.

  8. Tackleblockwin Says:

Can’t wait until we get a GM…the 1st Press Conference should be a good watch. BTW, Is there anyone already in the ranks at One Buc that could do the job?

  9. Eric Says:

After what happened with Dominik I doubt the Glazers go down the hallway to make this hire.

    Nor should they.

As a matter of fact they need to clean out the rest of the Hallway and have the new GM and Lovie reset the scouting department.

Some folks there that have been in place way too long, and a fresh approach is badly needed.

Right down to whoever gets coffee.

  10. Demetrios Liaros Says:

Who will be the Capologist? He is just as important as the GM. That is something at which Dominik’s staff excelled.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Glazers have so many candidates….looks like they aren’t close to one…the keep adding interviews…..no problem with that….just an observatrion….

  12. The_Buc_Realist Says:

    @Demetrois Liaros

They excelled cause most of there picks and free agents bombed. when you are not handing out second and third contracts, your team will be way under the salary cap, and so will the win total.

  13. biff barker Says:

It’s PM, not GM, as in Partial Manager.

The Glazers have failed repeatedly in acquiring the right talent to run their franchise. Organizational stability is compromised by not having a proven NFL GM or President of Football Operations running the show. Top down, with full authority.

Since it’s not top down, the players reporting structure is occluded.

  14. Go Bucs Says:

I really think the Bucs have painted themselves into a corner here, but giving Lovie the final say of the 53 man roster? I have a feeling that’s weighing in on a lot of minds that are considering the GM job.

  15. Jon Says:

@ buc realist. Tired of you being an expert on everything. It is hard to have Jackson, revis, nicks, goldson, draft picks, and free agent signing and still be in good cap shape. I hope the grass is greener but you seem to take things personal like you worked for the Bucs and got fired or something.

  16. stevek Says:

“Good cap shape” must mean featuring a lesser and inferior product. One that lacks the ability to have pass rush, O-Line playing up their paychecks and team depth.

“Good cap shape” is a reflection of how many holes our roster has.

  17. TBBfan Says:

Amen to what you said, Jon. That could also be said about Eric!

  18. PRBucFan Says:

He helped develop one the the deepest teams in the NFL in san fran.

He would be one of the better hires, the way things have been. I won’t get my hopes until its official lol
