Bryan Cox Got A Promotion

January 12th, 2014

cox and haywardAlways a fun sight in the Bucs locker room over the past two seasons was Bryan Cox walking around in a fancy lid and sporting a cigar thicker and larger than Joe had ever encountered. (No oval-office jokes, please) Yes, Cox confirmed to Joe that they were special, authentic Cubans.

Cox would say a quick, postgame farewell to Bucs defensive linemen before media would get the green light to hound the players.

Cox, the former superstar linebacker, was Tampa Bay’s front-7 coach in 2012 and their pass-rush specialist last season.

Bucs defensive linemen always were quick to express their love and respect for Cox as a coach, but Cox was quick to remind media that he wasn’t the boss. Randy Melvin had the title of Bucs defensive line coach.

Well, now Cox is a boss. He’s got his own defensive line — in the NFC South.

Atlanta named Cox, 45, as its defensive line coach yesterday. It’ll be interesting to see what he does with that struggling unit.

Joe always lauded Cox here, primarily because of the respect he commanded from players, and because the Bucs’ front-7 made such a transformation in 2012. Whether Cox was a supporter of all those Bucs line stunts is unknown.

Well deserved hire and promotion. I like him too. Lovie should have kept Cox and Byner IMO.

  2. DMAD1 Says:

Yes well-deserved promotion wish you were still in pewter and red

  3. Andres Says:

Good for him, one of the bright spots on that staff.

From front 7 here to front 7 there, good for him.

Good thing our system will be completely different.

    No secrets here to spill

  9. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Has Lovie kept anybody from the Schiano staff? As has been posted there were several coaches who probably would have fit in just fine.

I know one school of thought wishes to simply clean house, I’m not sure however that a coach or two from last year wouldn’t have been able to inform Lovie on what happened inside the locker room and on the field last year.

    @StPeteBucsFan

We don’t need one of last year’s coaches to brief Lovie….Lovie can just watch all the surveillance tapes.

  11. PRBucFan Says:

Lovie had enough respect that he can just ask one of last years staff whether he’s bringing em back or not and I’m sure they’d brief em

  12. Gt40bear Says:

As much as I liked Byner and Cox, there has not been enough of a house cleaning yet! After the stench of the last 5 years, not even the secretaries should be employed. I will, however be willing to let them stay as long as Dennis Hickey is told to hit the bricks!

Best wishes to a class act

  14. BucfaninMO Says:

Did Cox also have the Daily Racing Form with him? Don’t know if you Bucs fans knew this but B. Cox was a handicapper for a horse racing channel before retuning to the NFL.
    The man can pick winners..

  15. Clowney Says:

With the 6th pick in the 2014 NFL draft Bryan Cox picks……………..Jadaveon Clowney.

    Uh-oh!!
