Greg Schiano is no fan of common NFL chatter that doesn’t expect or account for players improving during a season.

This week, Schiano said that’s hogwash and not what his regime is about.

Schiano was detailing the evolution and implementation of the Bucs’ 2013 pass rush, and Schiano became passionate when discussing that the defensive line, or any other unit on the field, isn’t limited by their skills and abilities on opening day — or on paper.

“I think we’re getting better in our four-man rush. I think we’re starting to understand the concepts better, techniques better,” And that’s one of the things, you know, sometimes in pro football people think just, you know, ‘Well that’s who you got.’ Well, no. You can get better,” Schiano said.

“That’s why we go out there and practice every day. And let’s practice and work technique and be a better pass rush team, or a whatever-it-is team five weeks from now, four weeks from now as we go through the season. So I think we are improving.”

Not only will Greg Schiano’s record be scrutinized by Team Glazer in the coming weeks, but so too will be the progression and regression of players on the roster, as well as the development of units.

Schiano’s got plenty of success stories, but the biggest red marks are at defensive end.

It’s hard for Joe to imagine how Schiano, Butch Davis, whose got a Super Bowl ring as Cowboys d-line coach, along with current defensive line coaches Randy Melvin and Bryan Cox (two more guys with Super Bowl rings) came to the conclusion that Da’Quan Bowers was a double-digit sackmaster ready to replace Michael Bennett, and that Adrian Clayborn (four sacks in his last 18 games) was ready to shine. 

Those bad calls could get overshadowed if emerging, versatile rookie Will Gholston (two sacks) finishes strong.

Of course, the ultimate development/improvement project is Mike Glennon. He’s been up and down. If he’s got one more upswing in him this season, then Schiano’s staff has done a masterful job with him.
