Bucs commander Greg Schiano explains why he didn’t run the hurry-up offense more Sunday, despite its success.
The Bucs offense Sunday, for all but two possessions, was about as miserable as you will ever see. Word is Will Muschamp watched the game from Gainesville and grew nauseated. The offense was so bad Father Dungy wanted to kill off a bottle of Crown.
The offense was so bad, Trent Dilfer was laughing.
Again, that was the Bucs offense for all but two possessions. Of the 13 possessions the Bucs had against the 49ers, there were two scoring drives and the remaining 10 possessions the Bucs gained a grand total of 11 yards.
Honestly, Joe thinks that may be one of the worst offensive performances he has ever seen. In retrospect, it was unconscionable.
Bucs commander Greg Schiano wasn’t too happy about it either. When he spoke Monday before the Tampa Bay pen and mic club, Schiano tried to explain why he didn’t run the hurry-up offense more, despite it resulting in two touchdowns Sunday. When the no-huddle wasn’t used, the Bucs offense was, well, ghastly.
“We just weren’t very effective and I think that’s why we went to [a hurry-up] to try to stir it up a little bit, get it going,” Schiano said. “My hope was that we could go back-and-forth. I personally don’t [want to], that’s not who we are and we don’t practice that way and I don’t want – just because it works doesn’t mean that I want to go play a whole game in no-huddle if that’s not what we practice. Otherwise, why practice? Just show up on Sunday.”
Joe thinks that’s just a bit of an overstatement. Just because a certain offense that you hadn’t worked on is working in a game means you shouldn’t conduct practices.
Football is not unlike basketball. Joe has friends that are basketball coaches and they will, like a football coaches, work on certain plays and certain defenses for the next opponent, but that doesn’t mean they are inflexible. How many times have you seen in a basketball game a team jump out quickly to a huge lead, and the team that falls behind calls a timeout and changes defenses if not both a defense and an offense, and said team crawls back into the game? Happens just about every night somewhere.
You don’t see basketball coaches stick to only what they worked on in practice, only to get boat-raced and do nothing. Coaches who might pull that stunt aren’t employed for long.
Joe understands where Schiano is coming from, but who cares if you practiced a certain type of offense or not? If it is working against a defense like the 49ers, imagine how well it would work in other games if you did practice it? If something is working, you force the defense to make you stop running said offense. You don’t just throw in the towel and give up because you didn’t work on said offense during the week. It’s about getting results. Who cares if you never practiced it? It’s working! That’s what counts.
The fact the Bucs’ hurry-up offense was working is well-established. If Schiano was worried about exposing Glennon too much or putting too much on tape for opponents, well, Joe gets that, but again, so what? Schiano had a chance to get a huge, upset win and pretty much secure a return for 2014?
Frankly, it is irrelevant how little you practiced an offense if it is working. That is the key. That’s what matters. It was working. In a close game — in a game in which a win could have granted a coach job security.
That’s like giving some cute chick who is big time hitting on you the cold shoulder because you didn’t work on your pick-up lines the day before.

And this is why he deserves to be fired, but he won’t because it makes too much sense & these are the glazers we’re talking about. Nothing we do this offseason will make me excited knowing that Schiano is head coach because he’ll find a way to screw it up. If Schiano is head coach, I guarantee Glennon is our starter in 2014 & we don’t use 1 draft pick on a QB. Smh

This is really a scary statement for us Buc fans if this is the mentality of our leader. First of all, obviously we have practiced it, or we wouldn’t have done it. Doesn’t our coach preach situational football? Are you going to tell me we don’t practice the no-huddle offense? If so, he’s literally the worst situational football coach that’s ever walked the earth. Second, so if something is working, we aren’t going to do it just because it’s not “who we are”? I have a bright idea: why don’t we make it who we are, since it is literally the only thing that is working. We’ve gone through 14 games of horrendous offense (minus basically one game), yet we are going to continue to do the same thing over and over because it’s “who we are”??? Who we are isn’t good enough. Let’s be someone else. That’s what drives me crazy about this regime. They absolutely refuse to switch things up. It’s been proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that running up the middle on first and second down, then running 4 vertical routes on third down (when the defense has their ears pinned back to rush the passer) does not work in the NFL. That’s painfully obvious. If it’s Sullivan, then make him change or fire his arse. Pretty simple. I believe it is Schiano because we have the same stubbornness on defense with all the stunting. Although I know Schiano is coming back, this statement tells me he shouldn’t.

WOW! Wha a statement by schiano. This shows how big of an idiot he really is. He is basically playing to lose. I can’t even explain how much I dislike schiano as the coach of this team. It is a travesty he made it this far, there is absolutely no way he makes it to next season he is the worst coach in nfl history. Wins/loses might not reflect it but he is the worst.

Hard to grasp the logic behind what he’s saying. If something is working you stick with it until they make you change. If the hurry up is working….why change voluntarily? Glennon was in a rhythm and even Ronde commented that the offense had finally found a rhythm. I’m beginning to see more of Schiano’s influence on the play calling and that along with vanilla x’s and o’s is a recipe for failure. He’s great at developing talent but he coaches a game that died in the 70’s.

Anyone still think it’s Sullivan calling the shots on offense? This should’ve been obvious after Seattle, when they came out with a creative game plan and scored some points. All of a sudden, Gregory is in the offensive huddle and the team goes into a shell again.

If he’s retained as coach I’m going to start anticipating the 2015 off-season head coach search. 2014 will be a tank season.

Like I said yesterday. Schiano is stubborn to a detriment. The hurry up offense isn’t HIS WAY of running an offense, so even though it was working we couldn’t stay in it because it wasn’t HIS WAY.
So let me get this straight… If a team takes you out of what you WANT to do, you should just continue to do the same thing because that’s how you WANT to run your offense??? This explanation is complete nonsense and such a weak excuse for Sunday’s decision to continue to slam our heads against a 49er wall.
What gets me is Schiano is supposed to be a Belichick “disciple”. How often do you see Tom Brady find a match up against the defense and continue to exploit that mismatch until the defense adjusts??? Ask Leonard Johnson about Tom Brady throwing to Edleman 5 times in a row when he was matched up against him.
A good offense should be versatile enough to run offensive plays in multiple schemes. This coaching staff cannot handle that. Any scheme that requires more than 3 formations will overload their brains.

@Hawaiian and others — I couldn’t agree more! I was willing to consider the idea of allowing him 1 more season depending on these last 3-4 games (like it’s my decision or something).
But this is the whole problem with Schiano! it was working but he doesn’t want to do it cuz it’s not what he likes, not what he practices! seriously? Its INFURIATING!!
Hey Coach, no one is telling you to do it the whole damn game, but maybe more than twice when it’s the ONLY thing working! Can we demote him to defensive coordinator and get a real guy(s) in here for HC and OC?

I don’t know who is calling the plays, but as OC and HC there’s enough blame to go around. Sully and Greg are not doing their jobs. Whether Sully runs the offense with a little intervention from Schiano, or vice versa, it ain’t workin’! This really reminds me of the 2011 season, when Rah was HC and predictable OC Greg Olsen was still here. This was after an astonishing 10-win season in which players like Josh Freeman, LeGarrette Blount, Mike Williams, and others seemingly took the NFL by storm.
They were doing pretty well honestly, until that trip to London. Blount was hurt, so Earnest Graham got his second straight start of the season and unfortunately suffered a career-ending injury that game. The offense played horribly, and the defense couldn’t tackle Matt Forte worth a damn! After that everything went downhill. Blount came back and all Greg Olsen did was run him up the middle. Blount wouldn’t even look up when he was running, he would have his head down and wait to run into something and try to run over whatever he ran into, which didn’t work except for one time against Green Bay, that’s it. This was before we had VJax so Mike Williams was the No.1 receiver, and he had the second most drops in the league that season behind Roddy White, if he could ever get open. Every play seemed like, Blount up the middle, Checkdown/screen to Kregg Lumpkin, and then a short pass or another Blount run. And of course that year the defense quit on Raheem so they weren’t even worth watching. I am just sick and tired of a predictable offense. Doesn’t matter who the players are running them, the opposing defense will know how to stop the Bucs 9 times out of 10. This is ridiculous, we went through a coaching staff overhaul after 2011 to see PROGRESS, not to keep doing circles.

@Walkdaplank Good points. Difference between this team & 2011 is we have a lot more talent defensively but we could still end up with the same record at 4-12. We fired Raheem for going 4-12. Schiano’s doing it with a much more talented team!!

I’m not going to say “fire schiano” just because of this statement, but if I see him run the same offense in St. Louis that he just got demolished by the 49ers I’m going to seriously start doubting him again. I said it before, he needs 5 wins to be considered for another season, any less than that and he should be kicked to the curb. I’m not satisfied with 5 or 6 wins, but if he can manage that after starting 0-8, it would be impressive. A turnaround like that is not easy. But IMO, he needs to shut his trap a little more. He talks to the media way too much for a losing coach. He has these interviews or a press conference almost everyday, and sometimes he ends up saying stupid stuff like this.

@Bucs or GTFO – Exactly, when thinking about Schiano, I often ask myself “What could Raheem have done with all this talent?”. His best players on defense were trigger-fingered, pill popping Aqib Talib (always suspended or injured), green machine Tanard Jackson (always serving a suspension), and Ronde Barber (at that point, he was a nickel corner at best). His best players on offense were Mike Williams (always double-covered or dropping the ball), Dezmon Briscoe, ball-hogging K2, and bull-rush LeGarrette Blount (had a good rookie year, not as good as Martin’s, and after that he stunk). GMC was always injured, Bennett didn’t have his breakout year yet, and Brian Price was a starter, as well as E.J Biggers and Elbert Mack.
No Doug Martin, no Mark Barron, no Goldson, no GMC (not a healthy one at least), no VJax, no Lavonte David, no Darrelle Revis, and no Tim Wright. The only thing that Rah had that was better was a younger, more productive O-line, and a healthy Connor Barth!
But Rah had his own problems, he wasn’t the coach for us. But I still wonder how much better (or worse) we would be if he had the same team as Schiano.

Schiano is damn lucky he isn’t coaching for a big market team, or he would be eaten alive for this nationally. What if Tom Coughlin had said this, or even worse, Jason Garrett? He’s getting a pass because nationally nobody really cares about us (sad, but true). I would hope and expect the media to drill him with question after question about this at his press conference tomorrow. Hopefully he’s got his excuses ready. This guy is a clown, and in WAY above his head. I know many of us are hoping he would go to Texas, but there’s no way in hell Texas would even give him an interview. So isn’t that just wonderful that the head coach of our team can’t even get a college football job? But I guess we’ve just got to “stay the course”. We’ll get it figured out, he promised us that.

Than again I don’t know what’s really going on either.
Your naive to think we have the whole picture.
Schiano doesn’t have the luxury of doing that so I hope for his sake that that’s not the case.
Also I hope the offensive coordinator grows a pair and starts insisting that they become what works.
If Schiano allows Sully’s predictable playcalling and unimaginative offense to continue than I can’t say much other than its on him the outcome of that.

What exactly have you seen this year that would lead you to believe there’s ANY chance we are going to do anything differently? I mean, we are 14 games in and nothing has changed! Same bullcrap from week 1. Losses pile up, but we’re just going to keep on doing what we do – which is nothing. He’s already come out and told the Rams we aren’t going hurry up, so they don’t have to worry about that. Kind of funny that the same coach that won’t tell the media what the teams protocol for the QB’s headset going out, tells everyone that we won’t be doing hurry-up against the Rams. Genius Schiano, genius.

@Hawaiian – Not gonna lie, the Bucs looked like a damn good team in the first half of the year last season before collapsing for some reason. That’s the only thing that is keeping Schiano in the game right now other than winning these last few games. No 7-9 last year and I guarantee you we would have gone interim because of the 0-8 start this year.

I’m assuming what he meant to say was that we have a gameplan in place and want to stick with it during the game for as long as possible because those plays in theory gives us the best chance to win and a comfort level because we practice them. Calm down, did you not take your meds or something? If you’d been on this site for more than a few months you’d know better. I supported Raheem for most of his tenure (only when the team quit on him did I stop). I supported Schiano all of last year. But this has been the season from hell, and look no further than the man on the top for responsibility. You can deflect blame to Dominik (which is probably deserved as well), but the coach is at minimum equally to blame.
This is beyond the stupidest comment I’ve ever heard from a head coach. It’s so crazy, I almost don’t believe he really said it. There’s no understanding of what’s going on inside, this is right out there in the open. Only a complete buffoon would try to defend him. Shouldn’t Sully at least get the benefit of the doubt after this? I mean not completely let off the hook, but how can we be so sure its on Sully. Maybe, just Maybe that top 10 offense last year was all Sully. And this year Schiano dictated more. I find that easier to believe than Sully just forgot how to call plays.

Huh?? If it works you keep doing it till it doesn’t work. How many times did Kaepernick roll out to the sideline and burn us with a throw to a receiver just barely in bounds? I lost count. It was working so why not keep doing it…I just don’t see the logic in voluntarily quitting something that was successful just because “we didn’t work on it”. Who cares?!? Work on it now ’cause IT is working on Frisco!!! Schiano is great with developing talent but his coaching style seems prehistoric.

Stick that on his NFL Head Coach Tombstone. If that’s truly his mindset once the game starts, and it obviously is, then he just signed his death sentence. If you refuse to adjust in the NFL then you have no business being there.

I have to agree with Hawaiian. I keep trying to like Schiano. I mean, I’m Italian, but I just can’t. This stubbornness is beyond understanding. We are trying to play 1967 football in 2013. The game is changed. You better adjust with it. This is a passing league. Does anybody remember Schiano when he first got here? His very first press conference he explained that we were going to run, run, run the football and throw it deep. That never translated to me. So, let me get this straight coach. We run on 1st and 2nd down and throw long? Intermittently take our shots down field? Umm, no, no we haven’t. Either this overpaid O Line does not give Glennon time or he is nowhere near being on point with the deep ball. Any deep passes that happened basically go to V Jax and thats because he outduels the cornerback for a catch. Is that even an offensive scheme? All I know is last year we had a top 10 offense with Sully calling the shots. Now, we have more of a defense and our offense is horrific. What gives? Somebody or some people have got to go? The Glazers need to chop wood.

Do you really believe that Dominik hired Schiano? I blame the Glazers. Who knows what they’re up to. Maybe kill fan interest in order to move the team?

I really believe that Dom hired Schiano. I mean think about it, do you think that some billion dollar owners are going to do the research to see who is qualified to be the next head coach? No, thats what you pay the GM for imo. Now, did the Glazer’s have the final say in who was hire? Sure, but Dom sold the Glazer’s on Schiano. This is of course imo.

That was the most ignorant non answer I ever heard because he never answered the question and it’s shows how rigid and unaware and unwilling he truly is. So last year we have the #7 ranked offense in the league and almost lost Mike Sullivan to the bears then a year later he’s falling on the sword got the worst offense? He follows orders of the boss too, Schiano is a control freak so he’s the problem and maybe that’s why sully has been trying to get outta town since he got here…..
Maybe the it isn’t much of a coincidence that the offense is pathetic after every players favorite coach left……anyone else missing p.j. fleck right now….. JOE how did his college coaching debut go, he’s the forgotten man here

Ultimately like I stated already Schiano is responsible for allowing Sully’s predictable, unimaginative playcalling and offense to continue.
And if he continues to repeatedly watch our offense run on first and second downs and pass on third and long and stall without making the necessary changes than that’s on him as the head coach as is whatever fallout comes from it. Including the whole staff getting fired.
Someone is doing a phenomenal job of scouting/evaluating and bringing in talent and they, whoever they are, should be retained in that field for our team next year.
As far as everyone else, IMO, their fair game.
Also if their is a complete coaching change someone needs to make sure there is no drop off in the defense and their development.

Well this is the most outrageous thing Schiano has said. It’s scary that he thinks this way. If the way we are included all his injured players well guy, they are gone and you saw for yourself how well the no huddle worked. And you abandoned it???? Geez, this is really disappointing. I now have to question this guys approach. This kind of thinking has to change or he will be out of here.

Granted we’ve had a lot of injuries on offense this year, but it’s not like the offense was humming when we were healthy. It doesn’t matter how good your RB is (speaking of Doug Martin), you can’t run in the NFL when the other team knows exactly what is coming. You can’t throw the ball when you run the same routes over and over again (which other teams have said we do on numerous occassions). We haven’t looked like an NFL offense all year except for one game. We have scored 20 or less points in 8 out of 14 games. That’s beyond pathetic. We’ve score over 30 points one time! Let that sink in. I have serious doubts Glennon is the answer at QB, but let’s at least give the kid a shot. But really, it’s too late. Schiano isn’t going to do anything differently in the next two games, because he’s absolutely convinced we are going to be able to force our will on the other team. We aren’t Florida State and have twice the talent our opponents have. To win in this league you have to have some deception schematically. We have absolute none of that with Schiano.

Schiano seems to be in a world of hurt by those who want him gone. Opinions change with the winning percentage. Most want him gone yesterday. At this point of the back and forth wrangling amongst fans, I don’t care whether he stays or goes.

I don’t want to get into a war of words with you. This is a legitimate question.

How do you know he’s allowing it to happen instead of forcing it to happen?
For example, he says we take a shot downfield when HE feels it’s the right time. –HE dont want to run the no huddle even when its working. –We are a run first team.
To me, it seems more like an order than an allowance.

Schiano’s idiotic statement shows its more of his offense than Sullivans. If you are the Glazers and you have any shred of football sense. Those statements are very hard to overlook.
How can the Glazers look the fanbase in the eye and say we are trying to put the best product on the field. It’s hard to fathom how a head coach can be this dense and stay employed.
Schiano’s record is worse than Raheem’s and the team has more talent than Raheem had. And I am not saying Raheem needed to stay but Schiano is cut more slack for some reason.

Instead of going for an experienced pro coach with a track record, the Glazers are hooked by the interview. Rah charmed the pants off the Glazers in his interview and Schiano impressed them with his “I run a tight ship” discipline speech.
Unfortunately the candidates like Mike Sherman or Schottenheimer were the better choices, but will not blow you away in the interview. Unless this changes we will be stuck drafting in the to ten for years to come.
