“He Will Not Go Back In The Draft”
November 29th, 2013Erin Sheroni, prickly Pete Prisco and former Jets assistant coach and personnel chief Pat Kirwan, a primetime voice on NFL Radio, sit around in this CBSSports.com video and talk about the Bucs sensation sweeping the nation — Mike Glennon.
Kirwan had plenty to say about Glennon, but he also dove into Greg Schiano’s switch to Glennon and expressed certainty that Schiano will cross quarterback off his spring shopping list.
“I think the coach had a lot of courage to do what he did, unorthodox, terminate Freeman. And he will not go back in the draft for another quarterback,” Kirwan said. “So Glennon’s going to get a full shot at this for a couple of years. And I happen to like him. I see improvement almost every week. He’s got size; we all see that. He’s got arm strength. He’s actually a little shiftier than I remember him from the Senior Bowl. So I think he’s going to be around for a while.”
“He’s going to throw around 20 touchdowns this year and we’re all going to say, ‘We saw that coming.’ Of course, we didn’t.”
Joe can’t agree with Kirwan here. Joe still needs to see more in order to believe the Bucs will pass on a quarterback with their first round pick. Say the Bucs finish 5-11 with the ninth overall pick in the 2014 draft, is that enough to ditch a chance to draft Johnny Football, if he’s graded as the best player available?
Why are so many people allergic to quarterback depth, especially when the Bucs have so little cash invested at the position? Glennon has three more seasons left on his rookie contract. A first-round pick in 2014 would be locked up for five seasons, per the labor agreement, at a modest salary.
November 29th, 2013 at 11:51 am
@ Joe – Looks like you’re taking a page out of Schiano’s book with your lobbying for Manziel. Stay the course even if you’re the only one who believes it. My hat’s off to ya for that. Couldn’t disagree more but I admire that you’re sticking to it.
November 29th, 2013 at 11:54 am
I agree with Joe on the Manziel love, but I also think Tebow deserves another chance, so there is that ;o)
November 29th, 2013 at 11:56 am
Joe- Look at Jimmy Garoppolo! He is going to be a good QB and we can get in the 4th Round, he can back up Glennon or beat him out in training camp.
Joe wrote about Garoppolo weeks ago. –Joe>
November 29th, 2013 at 11:56 am
Joe – please cool it with Manziel lobbying and mentions.
Don’t be the fun police. Joe believes in Johnny. Joe sees no reason right now why Johnny couldn’t enhance this roster.–Joe
November 29th, 2013 at 11:58 am
I think the real issue with taking Manziel or any qb in the 1st round is that it would create immediate controversy. No matter what anyone says, the perception will be that the Bucs have doubts with Glennon and people will lobby for the new QB to start. I say we take someone in the 4th round and add depth.
November 29th, 2013 at 11:58 am
Joe even if we go 5-11 (probable) if Glennon throws 20 TD’s and continues to improve there is no way we draft a QB with a top ten pick when we have needs at DE, TE and O-line. I was not a fan of drafting Glennon but he is winning me over with every start.
You’ve said it yourself, Schiano is most likely here in 2014 which means Glennon is our starter and it would be a smarter and a safer bet to draft a QB in the 4th or 5th round (Aaron Murrray) and fill bigger needs in the 1st and 2nd round
Yes, Joe believes Murray will be a strong third-day pick, but he and Johnny Football are in two different classes. –Joe
November 29th, 2013 at 12:03 pm
Agreed @ Ian. 4th or 5th round would be a better spot. Aaron Murray at that spot would be a great pick.
November 29th, 2013 at 12:09 pm
They better not draft a QB in the 1st round. Glennon has been one of the best players on this team so far this year. They have other needs (DE, OT, TE, WR). Draft a QB in the 3rd or 4th round or pick up a veteran via free agency.
November 29th, 2013 at 12:12 pm
Johnny Football = Butts in seats.Fact!
November 29th, 2013 at 12:21 pm
Joe I happen to agree with you that the Bucs should take a QB in round one of the draft, just not on the who part.
I realize you like Johnny Manziel but if you truly believe Greg Schiano will not e fired as you claim, please explaine two things to me.
First, why would Schiano draft a QB that goes against everything he believes? Johnny Manziel has character issues and is a mobile QB. Schiano wants a pocket passer and a high character player.
Second, please tell me the last mobile quarterback to win a superbowl?
November 29th, 2013 at 12:24 pm
The pop-star has left too many holes on this roster. Qb will not be drafted in found 1, (unless an epic collapse and everyone is fired) write it down!
November 29th, 2013 at 12:26 pm
BillT Says
“They better not draft a QB in the 1st round…”
Just your insistance on that statement shows you don’t know the history of Buccaneer QBs.
November 29th, 2013 at 12:26 pm
1) DE… we need a Simeon Rice type DE to enhance the line like he did with Sapp. 1st round pick.
2) CB again… can’t have too many of these guys… perhaps free agency?
3) Oline… draft some young lineman 2nd and 4th rnd. No free agents
4) TE. Free agent.
5) WR. Draft.
6) Depth at line backer.
7) Find Tom Brady in the late rounds. 🙂
November 29th, 2013 at 12:28 pm
the_buc_realist, what holes thatcannot be addressed in later rounds?
November 29th, 2013 at 12:30 pm
Kirwin originally said Schiano was making a mistake by hitching his wagon to Glennon, and that he was a statue that was gonna get creamed. These guys don’t know sh$t about the Bucs.
November 29th, 2013 at 12:33 pm
Manziel would be a disaster of a pick anywhere before the 4th round.
You know what I’m thankful for this year? And every year? That the Bucs front office is completely insulated from ridiculous fan input regarding the draft and free agency. Thankful it’ll stay that way forever, too.
November 29th, 2013 at 12:34 pm
No, no, no to Johnny “Spoiled Rotten” Football. Not a Buccaneer Man. NFL Bust #TimTebow. The LSU game is a small taste of what he will be in the NFL. I’d rather have Mike Evans his go to WR.
November 29th, 2013 at 12:37 pm
^Agreed…if LSU can figure him out on multiple occasions imagine what NFL defensive coordinators will do. The guy is vastly overrated by fans. Glad he’s properly rated by NFL front offices.
November 29th, 2013 at 12:43 pm
If RGIII is struggling in the nfl, what makes you think Manziel would be any better?
November 29th, 2013 at 12:44 pm
I agree that the (backup) QB position needs to be addressed. I strongly disagree that the first round is the time to do it. Defense wins championships. The Bucs do not have a championship caliber defense. The first (or second) pick should be for someone who can make GMCs’ job a little easier. If the Bucs had another GMC type of player, even Myron Lewis could look like a Pro Bowl candidate. Next is the O-line, and then another receiver. A decent (or surprise) QB can be had in the later rounds. I do not understand the incessant need for TWO ‘star’ QBs. It creates controversy and becomes a waste for one players’ talents. It could also create a bad atmosphere if the ‘benched’ QB doesn’t like it. Then you’re back to one QB again, and a wasted pick. All that, of course, is assuming that the first round QB isn’t a bust.
November 29th, 2013 at 12:44 pm
Joe,
I agree, in theory, that that Manziel would be a good pick for any team. If you think there is any chance that Schiano will draft a guy like that you must not have been paying attention much over the last 1 1/2 years.
Glennon is the prototypical “Buccaneer Man” that Schiano is always talking about. I think Schiano values a players behavior off the field nearly as much as their play on the field.
That’s not to say that Johnny Football has done anything really that bad off the field but just the fact that he allowed himself to get caught up in all of the nonsense he did last offseason shows that he’s not really putting his team first.
Schiano always says they look for guys that eat sleep and breathe football.
That definitely does not describe Manziel.
If they do draft a QB it won’t be him. Whether he is the best player in the board or not.
November 29th, 2013 at 12:46 pm
Hey Joe ! when are you going to get off the Johnny train? against top notch Defenses he sucks !
Glennon has better arm strength, better size, and posses a better understanding of the game.
Johnny isn’t going to be able to look at his first see that it’s covered and then run around in the backfield for 5 seconds until a WR uncovers and then throw up a jump ball, and he want have Evans pushing off every play and not getting called for it in the NFL.
November 29th, 2013 at 12:52 pm
No, pass rusher in round 1.
November 29th, 2013 at 12:55 pm
Your constant blubbering over “johnny football” has me wondering about your sanity. He is not an NFL QB, Joe.
November 29th, 2013 at 12:58 pm
If Barr and Clowney are gone, Watkins is the pick, followed by Amaro/Ebron/Jenkins
All about #8
November 29th, 2013 at 1:15 pm
You people do realize that Joe does NOT want the Bucs to draft Manziel with the first pick right?
JOE…wants OT Matthews and then have the Bucs trade back into the 1st round for Manziel.
Somehow this has escaped you JBF posters. Joe mentions Manziel and most of you immediately think that, that’s what he wants them to do with his first pick. Not true.
Joe I’ve noticed that you have forgotten about Matthews in your articles, and concentrate on Johnny FB. How come? Why not let people know where you stand on Manziel for real?
November 29th, 2013 at 1:19 pm
I wouldn’t be opposed to trading back up into the sixth round for Manziel.
November 29th, 2013 at 1:46 pm
Joe….if Johnny is there at 10, I say there will be someone who wants and needs him worse than we do….lets trade the pick and pick up at least another 2nd round pick and then either in that round or later select one of the following(if available)…..McCarron, Mettenberger, Boyd, Murray…. we need our first round pick to be a starter….either a TE (Ebron) or 3rd WR (Watkins, Evans) or OT (Lewan).
The QB we pick can provide some “competiton” and serve a s backup without wasting a 1st round pick. The above QB are no less of a crapshoot than Johnny.
November 29th, 2013 at 2:01 pm
Schiano didn’t like K2 spinning discs in Cali, Schiano didn’t like Freeman missing his alarm clock, I don’t think Schiano is going to like a spoiled party boy who gets thrown out of frat parties in ATX or gets arrested for disorderly conduct, failure to identify, and having a fake license. With Glennon playing well, it would be a waste of a pick on Johnny Boy when the Bucs don’t have such good players at other positions.
November 29th, 2013 at 2:18 pm
Manziel will play in the NFL. Just not at the Bucs and most of the teams in the NFL. Foles is working for the Eagles, but the offense was not designed. Manziel brings a whole nother dimension to Chip’s offense.
Add Manziel with Tavon Austin at the Rams and that offense become electric. The Rams have two first round picks. Watch out!
November 29th, 2013 at 2:32 pm
Correction: offense was not designed for Foles.
November 29th, 2013 at 2:38 pm
Way to stir the pot.
My opinion is simple. If he plays well the rest of the year, and he has touch on the deep ball, there is no need to spend big bucks on a QB. You get a veteran backup signal caller, then draft what the team desperately needs:
Linemen. On both sides. Regardless of specialty. Best player available.
With solid line play, any QB and RB look like world-beaters. Ask the Giants. Eli is vastly overrated. And with bad line play, it shows.
November 29th, 2013 at 2:44 pm
Drafting Manziel is inviting unnecessary non-football related attention, something the Buccaneers and Schiano do not need. They will have to do with Manziel’s antics outside of the gridiron, and how do we know that handing him millions of dollars won’t exacerbate the issue?
November 29th, 2013 at 3:46 pm
Manziel’s style more or less ensures he’s going to be injury plagued. And oh yeah, all those crappy college defensive players he can break away from or spin out of tackles from in college, yeah that’s not gonna happen in the NFL. And oh yeah we still need to see what he’s like not chucking it up for Mike Evans to catch. If the Bucs draft a QB first round and Dominik is the GM making the pick, he just signed his own firing papers.
November 29th, 2013 at 3:47 pm
We won’t draft a QB, especially not Manziel.
If we go for anyone it will most likely be a veteran quality FA just as security in case Glennon gets injured.
We will fill all our positions of need before we go after a QB.
November 29th, 2013 at 3:59 pm
Joe,
No chance we go with a party animal for QB in the 1st round. I love Johnny Football as a fan and think he’s awesome as a dude. But to put my franchise on the shoulders of a 20 year old party animal is pretty tough to commit millions of dollars and a 1st round pick to.
He is literally a beast,Slammin Tequila with Model chicks all over him… Strait up, Vinny Chase sh*t… But I wouldn’t take the risk…
At some point he ends up in rehab during his career…
November 29th, 2013 at 4:10 pm
And your crazy if you think ownership would allow a risk pick like that after the debacle they just went through and losing out on millions with a QB with the same type of lifestyle and character type concerns.
November 29th, 2013 at 4:21 pm
If Schiano is your coach next year they will not even sniff around the rookie qb’s, mark my words. You really think Schiano wants to go through that circus again next year? Build around Glennon and let this one play out.
November 29th, 2013 at 4:28 pm
Get off Murray cause he is hometown boy please the kid is not great in anyway .. Led SEC big deal see KIRWIN BELL. HE looks like another ponder to me. Again I hear no one say that any qb from college is great they say good. There is no one that rtes close to Andrew luck. MURRY wasn’t from tampa we would not be calling for him.
November 29th, 2013 at 5:01 pm
@TheTruth, you clearly haven’t seen him play then lol. I don’t care if he is from Antarctica, he can throw the ball! He was 4 yards away from a national championship if only he had a better team around him, he beat LSU (who Johnny Boy just got shut down by) as well as Clowney’s Gamecock’s. He led an unbelievable comeback against an undefeated Auburn team that he should’ve won if it wasn’t for the selfish play of Tray Matthews, and UGA would be back in the SEC Championship if his team could stay healthy, they are more banged up than the Bucs are.
Matthew Stafford had A.J Green and Knowshon Moreno for two years before going to the draft to be No.1 overall. Murray has had no such WR’s or RB’s like those guys (Although Gurley is comin along) and he holds the SEC record for passing yards and TD’s while working with a mediocre offense. If Murray was on a team like Alabama or Oregon I’d bet he’d be more hyped up than McCarron or Mariota. Just my two cents.
November 29th, 2013 at 5:12 pm
The way Glennon is maturing, why would you even think about QB in the first round???? Trying to find QB’s who are doing what Glennon is doing his rookie year is like trying to find a chicken that craps platinum. It might happen but my guess is it’s pretty damn rare.
November 29th, 2013 at 5:28 pm
Teams don’t spend two high picks in back to back drafts on a QB when the first pick is playing as well as Glennon. Put down the pipe, Joe, and come join us sane folk back here in the real world.
November 29th, 2013 at 6:29 pm
Rather see them trade back in round 1 to get another team’s 1st and 3rd round pick which we could use for a DE in the first and maybe Murray (if he looks like he’ll come back from the ACL surgery OK) for a QB in round 3 (or 4). Also grab a veteran cast-off whose currently a starting QB but won’t be after the draft for depth (maybe a guy like Matt Shaub or Chad Henne?) in case Glennon gets hurt.
November 29th, 2013 at 7:32 pm
Joe (Lee)
Luvs him some Johnny Football, I have to appreciate his convictions. I’ll wait till the end of the year to agree or disagree with his possible selection.
Been a long time since seeing your name, Trox. Blast from the past. Welcome back.–Joe
November 29th, 2013 at 10:53 pm
Wow imagine being blest with your team having 2 good QBs. I still feel some TB fans feel that they don’t deserve this. I agree with you Joe let’s go for one of these much talked about QBs in first or perhaps the second round. If they are both very good what trade bait we would have to get someone really good already playing in the NFL at another position…..it’s a win-win.
November 30th, 2013 at 9:04 am
Always a loyal reader, my friend. Best wishes to you and your family during the holidays.
November 30th, 2013 at 10:05 am
The Buc’s need to add competition to the quarterback position, i think that was the reason for the down fall of Freeman,no other quarterback ever challenged him. It is sad when we allow a coach to continue to coach who may win 5 games, what have we become as fans.
November 30th, 2013 at 10:42 am
OL won’t be the choice either, if Schiano is still here.. because that means Dominik is still here and Dominik doesn’t draft OL high The pick will likely be for the DL.
November 30th, 2013 at 10:44 am
I’m all for Joe’s love of Johnny Football, but he’s got way too many redflags to be considered much higher than a late first round pick.
November 30th, 2013 at 11:46 am
We need DL,OL,CB and WR!!!! Get a good FA back up QB!! Maybe a trade down in the first round and get a extra 2nd and 3rd pick ?
December 1st, 2013 at 1:06 am
Johnny football will only be playing for the buccs is if Schiano gets fired cuz no way it’s he a “buccaneer man” not the type of character guy Schiano would tie his hat too
