Bucs Seize No. 1 Draft Position
November 10th, 2013How ’bout them Jaguars!
Jacksonville scored its first win of 2013 today in Tennessee. Their leading tackler? Mr. Geno Hayes.
This means the Bucs are the lone winless club in the NFL, proud holders of the No. 1 pick in the 2014 draft, if the season ended today.
Of course, this should make any Bucs fan ill. But when the nausea wears off, Joe’s sure many Bucs fans will be thinking about Johnny Football who the Bucs could land with that pick. It’s at least something interesting to consider before the Bucs kick off tomorrow night and try to penetrate the Dolphins’ porous offensive line.
November 10th, 2013 at 5:15 pm
Johny Football or bust. This guy is a proven winner
November 10th, 2013 at 5:18 pm
If I’m not mistaken, Tampa has tie breakers over Jax anyway due to strength of schedule. So, even if Tampa and Jax have the same record, Tampa gets first pick.
November 10th, 2013 at 5:19 pm
YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! Now we can leverage this unfortunate situation, and acquire some additional premium prospects. Lord knows we’ve got holes all over the place.
November 10th, 2013 at 5:19 pm
Tank for Teddy!!!!!!
November 10th, 2013 at 5:21 pm
Forfeit the rest of the season , blame it on MRSA! Clowney heft we come!
November 10th, 2013 at 5:21 pm
don’t forget about roy miller!
November 10th, 2013 at 5:23 pm
Not to rain on anyone’s parade, but this will change Monday night.
I was hoping the Jags would win…just to keep us in the running for that pick…because I KNOW the Bucs will win this next game.
November 10th, 2013 at 5:24 pm
Well, all eyes are on us now. We will be the talk of the town all day tomorrow! What a way to be famous! Sorry, getting the first pick next year is not doing it for me.
November 10th, 2013 at 5:26 pm
I don’t care how well Glennon does this year. The Number One pick should ALWAYS be a QB. At worse, we end up with quality trade bait. At best we end up with a second chance at a franchise QB after Glennon potentially proves himself to be a one year wonder.
November 10th, 2013 at 5:32 pm
If Glennon plays good for the Rest of the year-Why would you draft another QB?
November 10th, 2013 at 5:32 pm
Excuse me, WHY would you draft another QB in the 1st round?
November 10th, 2013 at 5:41 pm
Johnny Football is a knucklehead. Drafting him would be a colossal mistake.
November 10th, 2013 at 5:44 pm
Clowney!!!
November 10th, 2013 at 5:48 pm
All we need is one win. Let Jacksonville make a run. Go Bucs
November 10th, 2013 at 5:56 pm
Not sure if ‘ol Johnny boy’s overblown ego is what the Bucs need, but he’s a damn good football player (although the 3 picks against Miss State weren’t pretty). Clowney is who we need though. Glennon has been a serviceable QB in his rookie year and he keeps the INT number low. With receivers like Vjax, Williams, an up and coming Tim Wright, and the Muscle Hamster at RB with Mike James looking good so far you don’t have to be Peyton Manning to win with this offense. We do need to patch up our O-Line though.
Getting Clowney will hopefully improve our pass rush greatly, with a good DE to compliment GMC. If anything, the Bucs can always trade back if they decide to go with an O-Lineman or a QB since this year’s draft class is rich with talented QB’s. Johnny Boy, Teddy, underrated Aaron Murray, AJ McCarron, and Zach Mettenberger. Plus Mariota and that Winston kid from FSU (well Famous Jameis is a Freshman).
Although I don’t like being behind the Jags however, and I’m not in favor of tanking it. As bad as we have been I think we are better than Jacksonville. At least now we can win a game and still have a shot at No.1 even if we won’t have sole possession of the pick.
November 10th, 2013 at 5:57 pm
Not sure what’s true, but I heard one talking head state that it would be a coin flip , if there was a tie…just sayin’.
November 10th, 2013 at 6:02 pm
“you don’t have to be Peyton Manning to win with this offense. ”
Hope to high heaven we DON’t still have this offense, next year…LOL
As far as Clowney, I haven’t been impressed this year, don’t know what their doing, but offenses seem to be keeping him in check.
November 10th, 2013 at 6:02 pm
I do not want Johnny “spoiled rotten” Football on the Bucs. His game will not transition to the NFL. He will be an NFL bust. Clowney is a over hyped and takes snaps off. Not sure if he will do well in the NFL either.
November 10th, 2013 at 6:12 pm
Geez, the Falcons got carved up against Seattle. We put up a better fight than that lol. At least we aren’t the only one’s struggling.
November 10th, 2013 at 6:17 pm
The Bucs should draft defense 1st round. If it pans out that pick could be worth a lot in trades considering the quality of possible franchise QB’s up for draft.
November 10th, 2013 at 6:21 pm
Teddy SUCKS!!
November 10th, 2013 at 6:24 pm
Buc’s #1 need DE + best player in draft (J. Clowney) = ___________ fill in the blank – Mathematical fact!
November 10th, 2013 at 6:32 pm
Sorry people but Johnny Football is wayyyyyy better than Mike Glenon any day of the week and twice on Sunday’s.
The question is this – who is the next Buc’s HC?????
November 10th, 2013 at 6:36 pm
About Atlanta, I think they are a new contender for the #1 pick (they would take Clowney) even though they have a Franchise QB, they have Tanked it – Good bye Mr. Smith Good bye!!!
November 10th, 2013 at 6:36 pm
Johnny Football just keeps on playing great.
Lose out please, we need this guy. Don’t blow it.
We’ve had enough of serviceable.
November 10th, 2013 at 6:36 pm
It doesn’t matter if Johnny Boy is better than Glennon, what matters is if Glennon can play well enough to win, to determine if QB is our biggest need. Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Drew Brees are better than Alex Smith, but Alex Smith is 8-0.
November 10th, 2013 at 6:43 pm
This is the Bucs were talking about. The Jags winning means that Bucs chances go WAY up that we win tomorrow also. Lol, We always F**k up our draft position.
November 10th, 2013 at 6:58 pm
Bucs are not going to lose every game this season.
They will end up with at least 3 wins.
Johnny Football is only 6 feet tall. And he ain’t Drew Brees. He won’t translate in the NFL because he is too small.
November 10th, 2013 at 6:58 pm
YESSS!!
Finally- Tampa does something right!
We draft Teddy- and are set at QB for the next 12 years!!
Quit talking about Glennon! Good QBs win games!!! Period! Glennon hasn’t come close! QB rating in 4th quarter must be in single digits.
First Pick in Draft- just like Charlie Campell predicted!!
Dumbass jags! Lol
November 10th, 2013 at 7:07 pm
I don’t think Teddy is the one for us. The guy’s largely overrated being in one of the weakest D1 Divisions in college football, and lost to a bad team already this season.
November 10th, 2013 at 7:08 pm
If Schiano is HC and we get the first pick in the draft, I can assure you this man will pick a strong safety. Regardless of our record or Glennons play over the last 8 games, he believes Glennon is the one because he chose him and he will not draft Clowney because he does not value D-Linemen. This is the man that passed over Selvie, Bennett, and Gilberry. And think again if you think he is going to change the defensive scheme!
November 10th, 2013 at 7:08 pm
Rock star drafted freeman then cut him … His choice was Sanchez in that draft. Drafting another QB first round would just prove he SUCKS!
November 10th, 2013 at 7:12 pm
We’re more than capable of losing next eight.
But if we do win watch how fast the wagons get circled on here and Schiano will be exhaulted.
Perfect cover for the Glazer Boys to keep him in 2014, and the worst GM in pro football.
The toughest conference in college football, including pro style defense Alabama, can’t even slow down Johnny Football. He lights it up every week. He’s gonna be awesome in the pros.
November 10th, 2013 at 7:12 pm
If Schiano is still HC during the 2014 draft, the Glazers are gonna be the ones on the hot seat. Besides, he’ll probably just draft a guy from Rutgers and add him to his Rutgerneers squad.
November 10th, 2013 at 7:16 pm
@Eric – If I recall correctly Johnny Football threw 2 picks (one for a defensive TD) in a loss to Alabama this season, and just threw 3 picks against a mediocre Mississippi State defense. He’s good, but I don’t think he’s a sure thing.
November 10th, 2013 at 7:30 pm
Question for WalkdaPlank. What bad team are you in reference to in regards to who Louisville lost to? I sure hope your not talking about UCF. Because they are a very solid team. A team that very easily have been undefeated right now. Hopefully you just don’t know what you are talking about.
November 10th, 2013 at 7:31 pm
With several QBs being better fits than Johnny Manboy and at least a half dozen very athletic man mountain offensive tackles available it’s a shopping spree for Bucs management. What we need to be thinking about right now is whether Rock Star Dominik and Schiano should be in the decision making process! That’s the first order of business and like an election campaign, I say. “Throw The Bums Out”.
November 10th, 2013 at 7:34 pm
@Jeff, Ah yes it was UCF. Yeah, I guess I was just thinking they were a bad team because they were unranked when they beat Louisville and they haven’t been good in years. My bad, lol. But Louisville is still in a crap division and Teddy rarely has to play any solid teams all year. The only way he would have played a team like Alabama, Oregon, or Ohio State is if he made it to the NC, but that’s not happening since Louisville lost to UCF.
November 10th, 2013 at 7:50 pm
I gotcha. I concur Bridgewater would be a risk to take, to me hes just average. Johnny Football would also be a risk. I say we dont go after a QB and just try to trade back in the draft and get more players. We def need D and O line and another solid WR or CB. TE too. Wright is good but I still think we need another TE. As fans we just need to see Glennon to continue to improve. I think he has the skills to be the man, but for us not to take a QB he has to continue to improve. The main thing is whoever we take in this years draft we have to get it right, and I don’t think Dominik would be the right guy making those decisions. Don’t be surprised if we win these next two games as well. Go Bucs!
November 10th, 2013 at 7:51 pm
UCF is hardly a bad team. in fact its the opposite of that, they are a darn good team. the way it looks right now they might even be headed to a BCS bowl game. and their QB, Bortles, dont sleep on this guy, he could make for a good QB in the NFL. if hes there in the 3rd round I would definatly take him.
November 10th, 2013 at 7:59 pm
Andrew I have to agree with you completely. Bortles could be a steal in the draft. Go Knights! lol
November 10th, 2013 at 7:59 pm
I like some of these other players, but we need to take a QB. even if Glennon starts lighting it up, its no sure thing he will next year. plus you have to remember that when a new coach comes in, they usually like to draft there own guy.
November 10th, 2013 at 8:12 pm
I’ve been all for Aaron Murray. Nobody talks about that guy and he is beating SEC records this year in passing yards and TD’s. Keep in mind that the SEC has sported QB’s such as Peyton, Eli, and Archie Manning, as well as Tim Tebow, Matthew Stafford, and Joe Namath. Murray is surpassing them all. If he had a healthy offense his team could’ve gone to the Title game this year. However, he did beat Zach Mettenberger and Clowney this year, and he has to play No.9 Auburn next Saturday. A game I will be watching closely.
November 10th, 2013 at 8:14 pm
@ WalkdaPlank
I like him too. I would be cheering if we drafted him.
November 10th, 2013 at 8:15 pm
Very true Andrew.
November 10th, 2013 at 8:15 pm
and hes from Tampa.
November 10th, 2013 at 8:38 pm
QB in the 2nd round. The draft is stacked with QB’s. Clowney in the 1st or trade down and aquire additional picks.
November 10th, 2013 at 8:44 pm
Just booked my hotel for the MNF game tomorrow. So excited!! Go Bucs!

The first tie breaker is “strength of schedule”, second tie breaker is “divisional and conference record”, third tie breaker is “coin toss”. The talking head is wrong, just saying.
November 10th, 2013 at 9:24 pm
I didn’t read through all the comments but I saw Joe’s Tweet about drafting Matthews and Manziel in Round 2. I agree, none of these QBs are worth the 1st overall pick. To draft Teddy Bridgewater or Marcus Mariota over Clowney, Matthews, Lewan, Barr or Kahlil Mack would be a huge mistake. To me the logical solution is to kick the tires on the this Ben Roethlisberger rumor. If he could be had for the Bucs 2nd round pick, he would make this team a championship contender with a smart 1st pick and some added depth. Don’t be so sure this team doesn’t look at Cutler also. We don’t know the head coach, but odds are he will want to win now, not wait for a rookie to get used to the NFL.
Roethlisberger is problematic because of his salary cap number. Makes it challenging to have him and Revis on the roster. Definitley worth exploring, though. –Joe

Jesus Christ guy, you DO realize he set the SEC record for most total yards in a game don’t you? Against a team that’s won 3 out of the last 4 championships. You point out 2 picks, but conveniently leave out that he had about 450 yrds passing and another 130 or so rushing. Then I see other comments from other people saying his game won’t translate to the NFL because he’s too small. Yep – this is why I read the comment section of blogs. For the fans’ brilliant in depth analysis….
November 10th, 2013 at 9:32 pm
No, if you want a QB you get one early because the drop off in talent will be huge. Sure, every so often there are steals in later rounds, but they aren’t the norm.
November 10th, 2013 at 9:38 pm
@tampa2 – That comment was in response to Eric saying that not even Alabama could slow Johnny Boy down because he’s SOOOO GREAT! I simply pointed out that he lost to Alabama and threw 2 picks in that loss, I’m not an expert but I think that qualifies as getting slowed down. I never questioned the guy’s overall ability, but clearly you are punch drunk on the Johnny Football Kool-Aid.
November 10th, 2013 at 10:29 pm
We should trade down…..a couple of slots and we can still pick up a good QB…
November 10th, 2013 at 10:34 pm
Rob,
Roethlisberger says that report is BS! Which means it’s probably true.
November 10th, 2013 at 10:35 pm
Two weeks ago joe was all over Mariota now he’s switched to Johnny football. I wish there was a way the glazers could send you packing when they send Greg packing. You waffler!
November 10th, 2013 at 10:48 pm
I think if we get the first pick we should trade down and get an RG3 type deal and still be able to pick up Clowney or Anthony Barr, give Glennon a chance and if he does bad next season then we can draft a QB like Jameis Winston but I really like what I’m seeing from Glennon and think he can be the answer.
November 10th, 2013 at 10:58 pm
LUVMYBUCS Says
“Excuse me, WHY would you draft another QB in the 1st round?”
Because if you have the first pick in the draft you should ALWAYS take a QB. It is an opportunity that rarely comes along. You can get other positions easy enough later. Heck, last year we had 2 first rounders.
This town has seen more that its share of one year wonders. When you have a shot at the best QB in the draft…you take him.
Glennon won’t have a winning record anyway. You don’t waste a #1 pick in the “hopes” that he’ll work out.
You take a QB and make him earn the start. Then, if Glennon turns out to be elite late…you have very good trade bait in a backup.
November 10th, 2013 at 11:23 pm
I’m glad some of you guys aren’t front office and GM material!!!
You all clamor over a 5′ 11″ party animal of a leader playing on a team that has no defense thus he always will have big numbers – on opportunities alone!
Knuckleheads don’t pick a franchise player because it’s a fad or the numbers !
November 10th, 2013 at 11:26 pm
Johnny football threw for 464 yards and five td’s against Alabama. Yes two picks but ill take that with 5td’s, 71% completion percentage.
Saban said after the game that the A&M passing game almost gave him a heart attack. And he had two weeks to prepare.
He also threw for five TD’s this last week against Miss. State.
This is the type of guy we need to inject some life into this team. Badly needed.
Why the usual buc conservative crap, lets try something different.
Didn’t RG iii run a similar offense? He’s damn good.
November 11th, 2013 at 12:47 am
UHHHH HELLO?! AREN’T YOU GUYS FORGETTING, WE HAVE NO 1ST ROUND PICK! Idiots………HOW AM I THE ONLY ONE TO NOTICE THIS!? Does Darelle Revis ring any bells?
November 11th, 2013 at 12:56 am
OH WAIT ! you all mean the 1st overall in the 2nd round. OHHHH! okay. SORRY FELLAS I’M ONLY 16! lol. but uh….yeah…the caps lock is my friend. THE WORD IS LEGS. SPREAD THE WORD
November 11th, 2013 at 1:16 am
Teddy is not a good as advertised he struggles with decent competition. And they played no one the last 2 years and that includes gators. Notice all qb’s are spoken as good but not great. Aaron murruy will be like ponder.. Get Clowny a DE LIKE THAT Comes around evey 10 years. If qb he better be considered great like colts QB
November 11th, 2013 at 1:18 am
If they go qb I prefer the ducks qb 4.5 speed , size and Arm
November 11th, 2013 at 1:29 am
Johnny Football is the most exciting QB in the nation and it isn’t close.
So was Mike Vick.
These guys run around looking spectacular until they get popped. I would much rather have a guy that knows how to sit in the pocket than have a guy slinging it around but hurt 4-6 games a year.
November 11th, 2013 at 1:34 am
We waited over 4 years….for Freeman….wasted years….are we gonna waste another 4 years on Glennon??? We finally have a chance to get a franchise QBwe are in a division with Brees Newton and Ryan…finally finally a chance to solidify the main position On any football team. Sure Clowney is talented but will he REALLY come to work everyday??? This is our chance…don’t blow it Glazers…..Mariota please…. Or another top ranker….SOLIDFY the best at a position that touches the ball each play on offence finally please!!!
November 11th, 2013 at 1:34 am
Forget the stats and actually watch Manziel sometimes. He’s extremely raw as a QB. To quote scouts, his footwork is poor and he often throws without setting them properly. His listed 6’1 height is questionable and is a legitimate issue as his release point on throws is lower than both Russell Wilson and Drew Brees. He also has no experience undercenter and needs to work on his presnaps reads (also important for shorter QBs). All of that without bringing up his personality and off the field issues and concerns.
@Eric
Both Baylor and Texas A&M, as well as many other teams, run a variant of the spread offense.
November 11th, 2013 at 1:42 am
@THETRUTH
The Gators had a respectable defense that had many first and second round prospects. At the time, they were expected to put Louisville’s offense into the ground, but that didn’t happen. That game only solidified Bridgewater’s claim to fame.
And there are no elite QB prospects in this year’s draft like Luck, Peyton, or Marino. There wont be another until Winston declares for the draft.
November 11th, 2013 at 2:17 am
I am all about Clowney with our first pick this year. Ya he is a bit down this year and offenses are game planning for him. But you can’t game plan for him AND GMC on the same line. It will be like Warren Sapp and Simeon Rice days all over. GMC BADLY needs an outside threat to keep the QB from just stepping back from him. I still believe Clowney is the best choice for us.
Having Clowney/GMC/Spence/Clayborn is a dream team front 4. We wouldn’t need all the stupid stunts or blitzes. Just rush the front 4 and let them wreak havoc on the NFL. Clowney and GMC are once in a generation type players. Spence and Clayborn have the unstoppable motors. It’s a recipe for success.
There are plenty of QB’s to choose from this year and their talent doesn’t drop off that bad from round 1 to 2. But the drop off in talent for a pass rusher from Clowney to the next guy is HUGE.
November 11th, 2013 at 2:54 am
When Clowney does not wish to play he does not play. Tired of wishing and hoping for freeman all these years… Get the top QB available…. The QBS in our division are all elite…. Except us….don’t we deserve to be the same….must we always be the red headed step child…do we have such low self esteem that we don’t deserve the very best…go for the gusto….we won’t always have such a high draft choice….it’s our chance…don’t blow it take the best QB available!!!
November 11th, 2013 at 3:23 am
number 1 pick or not… i still want us to get a win.
You want to know the only thing worse than a franchise going 0-for on a season?
Going 0-for TWICE in your franchise’s history.
GoBucs
November 11th, 2013 at 3:38 am
I say the NEW coach trades that pick up and gets 2 First rounders and maybe more. See what’s on the market. The draft next year is going to be pretty deep. Let’s get more value. If the NEW coach thinks Glennon is serviceable, go after a free agent veteran to compete then teach the young man. Go after more pressing needs like getting somebody to Really replace Bowers and get some depth at O-Line and definitely some depth at WR. Sure could use a TE as well. The problem is we have a little talent in spots but exactly ZERO Depth. GO Bucs!
November 11th, 2013 at 6:50 am
If the ‘Rockstar” is our GM next year ( hopefully not), He will draft a guy with a blown out knee with the first overall pick…..regardless of position…
” We can rebuild him”
November 11th, 2013 at 8:01 am
Umm usn we gave our first round pick this year!! Idiot. We have the first round for 2014. Please do your homework before posting.
November 11th, 2013 at 8:14 am
We need @ least 2 defensive linemen. I still can’t get over the fact that we let Bennett go. That was really stupid.
November 11th, 2013 at 8:15 am
All I know for sure is that if we get the number one pick and we let the rock make the selection we have the dumbest owners in history.
The same if they let coach nut case anywhere near the guy.
And I love how you guys point out a negative stat on Manziel, but when I point out the near 500 yards and five td’s vs. Bama suddenly stats don’t matter.
He’s done more against way better competition than either the Louisville or Oregon QBs.
November 11th, 2013 at 8:30 am
“He’s done more against way better competition than either the Louisville or Oregon QBs.”
So has other College Superstars like Tebow. That didn’t stop them from busting. The kid has some legitimate red flags on him.
November 11th, 2013 at 8:42 am
raise your hand if you trust the pop star with an over all number 1 pick….if you do you’re probably playing golf with him
November 11th, 2013 at 10:18 am
Clowney!
To complete our defense!
Then sign Brent Grimes away from Miami.
Boom.
Super Bowl quality defense.
And oh yeah,
A tall, long, fast, ball hawking FS to sub in on nickle and dime packages.
Mark Barron and Dashon Goldson are both SS’s.
Keith Tandy and Leonard Johnson are NOT starting caliber players in the NFL!
Good backups, bad starters.
Go Bucs!
November 11th, 2013 at 10:20 am
Clowny is not giving full effort cause he does not want an injury that will lose him millions especially now that his team has no chance. Lattimore his friend last year lost millions from his injury and Clowny was there to see it all play out. At least having a pick in top 2 will make for interesting offseason and a good problem to have
November 11th, 2013 at 10:38 am
Manziel would not be a good pick! He has is way to many issues in college can’t imagaine what that punk would be like once he starts getting paid Millions.Besides Glennon looks good and Im thinking we aren’t going to get first pick and we wont need a qb. Bucs will when 5 out of last 8..starts tonight!!
November 11th, 2013 at 12:27 pm
So the kid drinks beer and chases woman in college.
Wtf?
