“A Bowling Ball Of Butcher Knives”

November 6th, 2013

Warren Sapp let Greg Schiano know what’s wrong with his defense today. Exhibit A, Sapp said, is mis-using a true superstar in Gerald McCoy.

Warren Sapp held court late this afternoon with media at One Buc Palace and continued raving about Gerald McCoy and being critical of the New Schiano Order defense.

“A bowling ball of butcher knives,” is how Sapp described McCoy’s dominance.

Sapp went on to say — again — that McCoy may be better than him and is just being used incorrectly by the New Schiano Order.

Joe asked Sapp whether he’s uncomfortable at all at One Buc Palace given how critical he’s been of Greg Schiano’s defense on NFL Network.

Sapp said, “No. It’s not personal.”

In fact, Sapp said he met with Schiano this afternoon and told him he’s getting it wrong by not using Darrelle Revis as a lockdown cornerback and not using McCoy properly on the defensive line.

Sapp, seemingly in disbelief of the Bucs defense, also detailed how McCoy is a more effective rusher than Ndamukong Suh because Suh is too one-dimensional as a bull rusher.

Joe will have the fantastic audio of Sapp later this evening. Awesome stuff.

You go Warren! Could not agree with him more, still cannot believe he’s still the coach.

  2. bucfanjeff Says:

Joe, so Schiano’s response to Sapp was…???…what exactly?

  3. Capt. Tim Says:

As usual- Sapp is spot on. Both about McCoy, Revis, and Schiano’s defense.
And poster Chris is still clueless

  4. Mr. Patrick Says:

No matter what advice he gets from people that know a lot more about football than he does, Schiano will still continue to do things his way even though it may be horrible and unsuccessful

  5. Adam L. Says:

(((yawn))) call me when the bowling ball has a couple of sacks.

  6. Mr Lucky Says:

I respect Warren Sapp’s belief but

    here’s the real rub……

WHEN has Warren been a coach? Isn’t everything Warren is talking about strictly HYPOTHETICAL?

I dont’ see the Glazers offering Warren a job as the DC – of course I WOULD like to see that!

PS. I am NOT defending Schiano as I would like to see Greg hit the road…just don’t understand why Warren’s word is gospel. Being a player and being a coach are two COMPLETELY different beasts.

  7. BB Says:

I think schiano stays and glennon works out. The second half the players are buying in and the team wins five to seven games and from here on things will improve and the franchise will be on the right track I saw and heard the turning point in Seattle this team is buying into schiano and glennon and schiano is learning to listen and change adversity us building character now is the time to rally behind these guys and put the negative news to rest.

  8. SteveBucsFan Says:

I’m listening to you Joes on 620. So glad someone finally put Big Dog in his place! I will be surprised if he keeps you on.

one is a hall of famer and one is a ave collage coach. sapp has all the right to tell shiano how he is doing it wrong. you must not remember 10 or so years ago and how amazing mr sapp was.

  10. Adam L. Says:

Wow, BB. My season tickets are in 218. How can I get seats in “La La Land?”

  11. JonBuc Says:

BB is Bill Belicheat for those of you scoring at home…wow.

  12. Splengo Says:

    BuccaneerBonzai(BB),

What are you in the Secret Service now? Lol.

  13. JonBuc Says:

Loving Warren even more of late… His bitterness of not being re-signed ( which he should have been) has been replaced with affection for the team he helped rebuild….only to watch this current dumpster fire. He was great on Dan Patrick as well as Thursday Night Football. Other than being one of the best defensive tackles of all time, he probably doesn’t know what he’s talking about. :/ Keep on keeping it real, # 99!

  14. BB Says:

I stand by my statements and will be proven right. joe is starting to buy in to my comments just heard him on dumeg show discussing the possibility of this happening. I was mad as anyone about sciano and wanted him out but I have now done a complete 180 and see this working out starting with a win against Miami

  15. Analacubana Says:

New to comments but…really? Like this HC would listen to ANYBODY!
Right and Glennon is our new franchise QB, lmao.

  16. WalkdaPlank Says:

Sapp used to be a guy that couldn’t keep his mouth shut. A little trash talk is fine, but sometimes he just sounded stupid. Nice to see that he has some good things to say about this horrible Bucs team that is a disgrace to the one that we knew him from.

  17. WalkdaPlank Says:

You know the sad thing is that for a second I have hope that the Bucs will punch Miami in the mouth on Monday because of the way they played against such a good team in Seattle. Then I come back to reality and realize that it won’t matter because Schiano and the Bucs will find a way to lose in the second half whether they are winning or losing. The interesting thing though would be how the Ray Jay crowd reacts to a Bucs win on Monday Night. Will there still be the same vile, vicious fans yelling obscenities at Schiano even if they win? Because I certainly don’t think even a win against Miami saves Schiano’s job at this point. We have a chance to beat them, but after watching the choke job last Sunday my expectations are still low.

  18. The Dom must go Says:

JOE think we all agree there needs to be a coaching change! No way this team is going 6 and 2 like y’all were talking on the big dogs show! I know you love Dom and maybe he is the guy for the job… BUT when Kelly turned them down Schiano was the next best choice????? Glazer hire or not they did not gave a second coach in line! Do YOU think Dom can get the right guy in here? They had NO plan at all when Kelly said No????

  19. Capt. Tim Says:

    Mr.Lucky
You don’t think Warren Sapp can appraise a Defensive Tackle? The position he reinvented?

    Riiiiight

  20. Mr. Patrick Says:

Guys, to keep this in perspective, the Bucs lost to an injury depleted Seattle team that the week before almost lost to the horrible Rams. Period

  21. Harry Says:

Wow, I am so relieved Sapp advised Schiano on how to better utilize Revis and McCoy. Now we are bound to start putting together our playoff push!! LOL

  22. Harry Says:

    What a blow hard

  23. Harry Says:

Oh, I am sorry Warren, its not personal buddy. You know that though, right?

  24. Chris Says:

The only thing I disagree with sapp: McCoy being an elite DT. I guess Oklahoma didn’t know how to use him bc he wasn’t dominate there. Raheem didn’t and now schiano doesn’t.

I know mccoy made a pro bowl with a measly 5 sacks against weak interiors. I said it when he was coming out as a prospect. Guy is stout in the run defense and average pass rusher. Best fit was a 3-4 de.

I hope he listens to sapp (schiano) because I do not believe its just the scheme that’s “holding him back” from being the best DT in the game.

  25. Chris Says:

    Capt Tim,

There have been many DTs that have come out in the past several years that many tried comparing to warren sapp. McCoy was one of the. Sor
Was Dwayne Roberston and Glenn Dorsey.

Geno Atkins hands down is the best DT in the game. Period.

  26. Chris Says:

Hey guys , Matt Millen was a heck of a football player. But one of the worst talent evaluators in nfl history. It’s why sapp is an analysts. Just because he reinvented the position does not make him right about McCoy.

And capt Tim, I know nothing? I think I’ve been correct on all my analysis on Freeman, bowers, 2010 draft class , etc. I was the only one who said Freeman’s 2010 season was not as good as everyone made it out to be and got so much “you know nothing” flack.

  27. Patrickbucs Says:

So Warren Sapp’s comments don’t mean anything because he’s not a coach but bloggers posts are correct? C’mon man

  28. Chris Says:

I do tend to agree with BB to a point. Schiano needs to do a lot of selling in that final meeting. Sorry guys glazers won’t fire him in season. Don’t operate that way.

Schiano has seemed a bit looser in his recent press conferences. Maybe easing up a bit. Remember bill bellichik was just like this. Cleveland was calling for his head. Look what happened when he adjusted. There are many that see bellichik in schiano. I see it as well but he needs to adjust. X’s and O’s wise schiano is a great teacher. He needs his players just like every other team operates to establish a foundation. I’ve said it many times I don’t think him and Dom get a long nor see eye to eye. He didn’t draft the likes of Clayborn Bowes McCoy price. He nixed price after the first day of TC. Briscoe and tankard Jackson. He was right. He was right about freeman since day one he didn’t think he was a franchise qb. He’s been right about glennon so far.

He also didn’t get his choices of OCs and DCs when hired late in the ball game. His first choice is currently the qbs coach of the team. sully is horrid. Sheridan is horrid. His first choice was McNulty and Donahue (DBS coach sf). Couldn’t get a sniff at the time.

All I know is: Dom , if he stays needs to be more of a cap guy. Not talent evaluator.

  29. MTM Says:

Who knows more about defense college coach drop out or a HOF defensive icon. I’ll go with the Hall of Fame player. Schiano is the new Munson.

  30. Buc1987 Says:

I’m think I’m Sapp’s BIGGEST fan of all time. BUT I think he’s stealing a line from NFL.com’s Marc Sessler when talking about McCoy being a bowling ball with butcher knives.

This is Sessler’s exact quote when talking about Doug Martin last summer.

” Adrian Peterson aside, Doug Martin might be the most enjoyable running back to watch on tape. Tiny in stature,” Martin becomes a rolling ball of butcher knives on the field”. Schiano has preached physical football from the start, and Martin gives Tampa a fever dream in the backfield.”

You tell me is Sapp faking it or not? Why not come up with something original? How unSapp-like.

  31. Buc1987 Says:

“Joe will have the fantastic audio of Sapp later this evening. Awesome stuff.”

@Joe exactly how later this evening will that audio be available? It’s 11:43 PM right now. Which is 17 minutes away from tomorrow.

Ya know if your going to put something in print you have to back it up. Drunk or not. Is this an amateur site now or what?

Not being critical but atleast delete the above quote, if your not going to have the audio.

  32. Buc1987 Says:

@Joe gotcha sunshine. Keep up the good work. My PC has technical problems with your site all the time and that’s no lie.

  33. Capt. Tim Says:

Chris. Doesn’t matter if you disagree with Sapp.
Here’s a shocker- but I think we’ll trust the hall of famer, over some delusional wanker posting his opinions from his couch.

    Ok?
    Lmao!

  34. Chris Says:

    Capt Tim. ,

Because hall of famers are always right?

Sapp/brooks are my favorite bucs of all time and I respect there opinions. But sapp also said josh freeman would win nfl MVP in 2011.

You never respond to the evaluation of how McCoy wasn’t a dominate pass rusher at the collegiate level. Yet think he is now? I’m not saying mccoy is a terrible football player. He just hasn’t produced nor played like the 3rd overall pick.

  35. Chris Says:

    Capt Tim,

Some wanker from my couch? Doesn’t that make you the same thing?

  36. Bobby Says:

@Chris….answer me this genius boy….why did McCoy go #3 in the draft if he wasn’t dominant at Oklahoma? Why did Mayock have him ahead of Suh on his board? Why do so many in the NFL and other pundits have him as an all pro DT? Do they just not have your insight for evaluating talent?? That has to be it. People that are good enough at evaluating talent they get paid for it are all wrong and you the couch potato fan are right. Don’t mind me if I just call you clueless and move on…..

  37. Chris Says:

Answer me this bobby: why did Atkins go 4th round? Every team misses on top 5 picks once in a while. Jets took Vernon Gholston and Dwayne Robertson in the top 5. They were collosal busts.

McCoy had talent and a lot of scouts projected that quick first step off the ball could translate into a dominate DT. But it didn’t happen yet. Still hasn’t. He’s a good run defender.

  38. Chris Says:

Also bobby , the only ones who have mccoy pegged as an all pro mid season is PFF.

  39. Broy3434 Says:

Bb your ridic. How can you say Schiano is changing. They just blew a 3td lead that we ALL saw coming. And if you didn’t your in denial. Me and my brother(who used to work PR for the team) said I think they lose by 10 when it was 21-7
