The Loudest “Chirping” Of All

October 17th, 2013

There’s a good old fashioned Xs and Os disagreement brewing between Bucs coaches and what feels like the rest of the free world.

Earlier today, defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan had strong and fun words for fans and pundits “chirping” about the Bucs allegedly not using lockdown cornerback Darrelle Revis frequently in man coverage. That’s not the case, Sheridan said, echoing prior comments from Greg Schiano.

Hogwash, claimed acclaimed NFL Films icon Greg Cosell. During an interview this morning on WHFS-FM, 98.7, Cosell charted the Eagles-Bucs game and explained it’s clear what the Bucs aren’t doing with Revis.

“Actually, they hardly played any man (coverage),” Cosell said of the Bucs secondary coverage. “We watched that tape over and over and they hardly played any man, it was almost all zone (coverage).”

As for Revis in particular, Cosell was surprised by the Bucs usage of him.

“We counted 2 plays in which you could truly say Darrelle Revis was playing man (coverage),” Cosell said of Revis’ play against the Eagles.  “Revis only lines up on the left side of the defense which makes the defense fairly predictable from a coverage stand point.”

So who’s full of baloney? Joe understands that in life intelligent people can see the same thing and have very different interpretations. The video below is a reminder.

  1. Capt. Tim Says:

Meybe Sheridan was looking at the wrong tape?
Or Revis is SUPPOSED to be playing Man, but plays Zone- cause it’s more Fun!!
Or- meybe Schiano really is running the Defense, and Sheridan can’t see the field from the hot dog Stand!!

Does the SS division( Sheridan/Sullivan) of the Pasta Nazi tell the truth about anything? Why is it that our Coaching staffs statements, conflicts with everything everyone else in the world sees and says???

This season just keeps feeling more and more like a trip to Bizzarro world

  2. bucbucbuc Says:

I trust Cosell more here…he brings an unbiased perspective (or at least less biased than the defensive coordinator of the team). Of course Sheridan is going to downplay the whole ‘man vs. zone’ debate; he’s been catching a lot of heat for it. At the end of the day, we’re not getting the maximum ability out of Revis, plain and simple.

  3. Warrenfb12 Says:

Dude he is playing a ton of zone. It’s just more evidence of the arrogance of this regime. Do they think all fans just turn on the tv for 3 hours on Sunday and that is it?!

  4. Captain Buc Says:

When I was a kid I lived in a fantasy world. When I played I would pretend to be fighting monsters and I would be kicking there butts, or a least that’s what looked like threw my eyes. To everyone else it looked like a crazy kid running around in his yard with a stick. Clearly the coaches for the Bucs are a bunch of crazy kids running around with sticks. They live in a fantasy world where they truly believe they are good coaches.

  5. gulfcoast Says:

So it sounds the Jedi mine trick “these are not the droids you’re looking for” has been adopted by Sheridan as well! Both of them are about as honest as a politician.

I say this with seriousness…. Maybe, just maybe Sheridan himself does not know the difference between zone and man. As stated in comments pertaining to the same subject, different post, I would understand the mixed use if revis is not healthy. I can understand that because banks is not that great on the other side but hey, don’t piss on my back and tell me it’s raining.

Fk it, cosell for def coordinator!! Lol

  6. gulfcoast Says:

    *mind

  7. Pewter Power Says:

Please get rid of these junior high coaches, what are they doing? First it is the offense with their inability to incorporate more then two receivers into the offense, now its the defense misusing the million dollar talent that we have on the field. Hopefully the Glazed over owners are seeing this as well.

    These coaches flat out blow!!!!!

  8. knucknbuc Says:

Cosell is obviously biased and a liar why would our coaches of high integrity ever tell us such misinformation? (Rolls eyes)

  9. Warrenfb12 Says:

A good question for him is acknowledging that he plays SOME man to man but then asking why so much zone? Or ask Schiano why he put his not nfl quality cbs on an island all year last year but won’t let the 16 million dollar man and a second round pick get after it?

  10. Hawaiian Buc Says:

A blind man can tell that we are playing mostly zone. I’m no football expert, but it’s very obvious. But I’m used to be lied to by this coaching staff, so its not really a big deal.

  11. Northend Says:

Chirp, chirp chirp This staff knows all.The rest of the world just Dosent see the greatness.but hang in folks it’s coming. Our pass rush,Joke of a no fly zone, and juggernaut offensive punch.its all on the way just stick with us.we will use the 16 million dollar man like we did Eric wright.trust us we know what we are doing.we sleep well at night

  12. Illuminati Says:

Well, whatever Man/Zone hybrid coverage schemes they use on Sunday, I just hope Revis can handle a healthy Harry Douglas or a hobbled Roddy White.

  13. Splengo Says:

Joe and every other member of the pen and mic club knows that Schiano has a disregard for the media that borders on disrespect. If the NFL didn’t mandate his presser he wouldn’t have them. Instead of giving an opening statement regarding the team and then opening it up for questions, he walks out, stares at the press and in so many words asks ” OK, what do you jerks want today”?

And please don’t compare him to Belichick because Belichick wins! The guy will say anything nebulous or least informing short of an outright lie. The media is patient and respectful because they have seen this act before and know soon they will exact their revenge with the pen and mic. It is going to be brutal and it’s going to be ugly.

And I can hardly wait! No secret, I don’t like this man!

  14. JN Says:

I really want to support this coaching staff but it is getting tougher and tougher every week. They are either delusional or think the fan base is stupid. I knew they were running mostly zone and I am no football expert by any means.

  15. Tampabaybuctfan Says:

The question is why?…..why would coaches that want to win at just about any cost misuse a player of Revis’ caliber.
The only answer seems to be stubborness…somehow, I just can’t buy that.
There has to be another reason because they absolutely want to win. Their jobs depend on it and they know that Revis won’t stay silent indefinately.

  16. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Tampabaybuctfan,

Stubbornness is probably the reason why. Most coaches are by nature very stubborn (I know this first hand as my dad has coached for over 30 years), but Schiano is on a whole other level. If it’s not his idea, he probably won’t do it. At least that’s the way he strikes me.

  17. Tampabaybuctfan Says:

    @ Hawaiian

If it is stubborness then they deserve the heat….and it it stubborness under the microscope of the players, fans and the press.
If it is…it can’t last long because it contributes to more losses.
I think we can expect some changes soon….I believe we are already starting to see some changes with the offense.

  18. Keith Says:

Maybe the New Schiano Order doesn’t know what man coverage really is? I mean, Dominik once hired an offensive coordinator who didn’t know how to call plays, so anything is possible.

  19. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Tampabaybuctfan,

Schiano is always saying things like “trust in the plan” and “stick with the plan”. The problem is, more often than not, the plan doesn’t work. Their plan never changes within a game. There’s no adjustments on our end.

  20. PRBucFan Says:

    @TBBF

There’s a reason we don’t know of plain and simple.

And it’s not because they don’t want to.

I’m thinking it’s cause he’s just not where he needs to be to be able to do it all game.

  21. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @PRBucFan,

Okay, that’s fine. I can accept that. But explain to me why they insult our intelligence by saying we are playing man when my 9 year old daughter knows we aren’t? What’s the point? I’m pretty sure the opposition can figure it out, regardless of what is said in a press conference, don’t you think?

  22. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Off topic, but it’s a good thing we didn’t get John Abraham. He almost tore Russell Wilson’s head off. He may have caused conflict in the locker room, which is why Schiano didn’t want him. I would hate for anyone to ever challenge Shitler.

  23. PRBucFan Says:

Did I say we were playing man?

  24. Bobby Says:

They may have played him in zone more in the Philly game but the Arizona
game he played man a lot on Fitzgerald, probably 70% of the time. Not sure about the other games. They played a lot of quarter zone against Philly where Revis is responsible for a quarter of the field. It was effective for awhile. The only thing I can figure is that they feel Revis is not yet able to play man to man on someone like McCoy. He isn’t 100% yet but he is getting close. I wouldn’t play Revis man to man exclusively but I would play him man at least 70% of the time. If they aren’t then it’s a waste of a shut down corner in my opinion.

  25. daniel Says:

i was watching espn a few hours ago and they asked jaws the same question and he said the same thing he only saw revis in true 1 on 1 coverage 2 or 3 times the rest was zone or man coverage with help from a lb or safety jaws said he has no idea what the bucs are doing with revis 16 mil a year to play mostly zone summarizes what he was saying

  26. PRBucFan Says:

I think it’s pretty clear that last game it wasn’t the case the majority of the time.

But prior to last game it was definitely more man than zone.

  27. PRBucFan Says:

Oh you said they* my bad.

And maybe to them “that’s not the case” because clearly 1 out of 5 games is the minority.

  28. BigMacAttack Says:

I like Sheridan and think he’s done a decent job, but I have to go with Greg here. Film doesn’t lie but Coaches do. Now maybe Revis isn’t as well as the Bucs want everyone to think he is and the Bucs are afraid to play him in press man coverage. Or maybe Revis himself doesn’t feel that he is there yet. I love Revis but if he can’t find his island or if the Coaches are lost and can’t find it, then why pay him $16MM?

But then again I understand very little that the Bucs do these days. I guess I’m an idiot and my eyes deceive me. I also like the condescending tone our coaches are taking in regards to the fans. Not Sullivan though. He’s open honest and I can’t help think that Schiano is stunting his growth in favor of his boy McNulty. Who knows and very soon it will be more like “who cares?” Fewer each week.

  29. Hawaiian Buc Says:

There is no way in hell we’ve played more man than zone in any of the first 5 games. Absolutely no way. Not sure what you guys are watching. Revisionist history perhaps? People have been complaining all season about the lack of man to man. This is not a new thing.

  30. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @PRBucfan,

And no, they were talking specifically against the Eagles. I like that you guys are getting creative in your defense of him, even when it’s an obvious lie – again.

  31. PRBucFan Says:

Maybe Cosell should break down every game and than say in which coverage the Bucs have used him most this year.

I think than it would truly be indisputable cause honestly 1 game is far from indicative of that.

Was that coach answering based on that game specifically or was it generally speaking? Honest question there

  32. PRBucFan Says:

I don’t feel like continuously arguing over stupid shiite.

Ahahaha It’s not that important to me, in the end it changes nothing.

They have their reasons and that’s that.

All we can do it deal.

I’m going to watch some college ball. Goodnight.

  33. Bobby Says:

No, you’re wrong about that Hawaiian. I know for sure in the AZ game he was man on Fitzgerald 70% of the time. Saw a break down of that game. Revis is playing ‘mostly’ some sort of man coverage but maybe you are just looking for press man. He’s done very little of that. I’m not sure that Revis hasn’t said he’s not 100% yet and isn’t ready for press man yet. I don’t know. All I do know is that the defense has been pretty good at stopping the big play up until the Philly game. Zone, man…whatever. It was working up until last week.

  34. 911bucs Says:

Why were we going after Carson Palmer again?
    Russell Wilson is legit

  35. trusomaroff Says:

You know someone who could’ve helped this D line?… John Abraham. Thanks for not going after him Dominik

  36. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Bobby,

So this is the first you’ve heard of this? You’re talking about one specific game, I’m talking about the whole season. You are crazy as hell if you believe we have run man in 70% of our overall snaps. But keep believing in Schiano. Its kind of cute and admirable.

  37. Hawaiian Buc Says:

And I know the difference between man and press man.

  38. Hawaiian Buc Says:

No we couldn’t get Abraham because they were concerned he would be a bad locker room influence. We are limited as to who we can bring in because our coach can’t handle anyone with any sort of defiance to his personality. But yeah, he just needs more of a chance.

  39. Architek Says:

All of it is garbage – Schiano is going to ride this circus to the unemployment line. Silly of him to not adjust being that he’s granted smart traits!

  40. Patrickbucs Says:

Waste of a pick and cash until this coaching staff moves on to high school

  41. Buc1987 Says:

So we are all stuck with this BS until the end. It’s becoming more tough to even have hope anymore. I saw the but with Jaws on ESPN too. I’m starting to question whether or not the Glazers have any clue about american football in general. I think maybe they lucked out with Dungy and finished it off by paying Gruden to win us a SB. I really am starting to question how much they actually care about this franchise. I never thought I would think like this about them, or have these doubts. As far as smearing our franchise though, it really is no big deal considering the history of this team. It’s been smeared through most of it’s existence. They spent money on the FA’s because they had to. I don’t see them spending any money on a quality coach, because that’s what it would take. A big namer Cowher, Mooch, Schotty or anyone else and the Glazers would have to shell out big time money in order to lure them to this sh!thole. I think they are too cheap to do it. Notice how the Bucs still had money to spend after Revis and Goldson and did not spend it?

Like I said last night on a thread. This starting look and smell like Culverhouse 2.0. The owners bring in a big name FA or 2 and fans buy up tickets hoping to see the team shine for once. Not saying I’m right, just saying what it reminds me of. I feel like I got suckered when I bought my season tickets. Like the old days. All that’s missing is the creamsicle jerseys.

  42. Buc1987 Says:

Cue Hawaiian Buc at any moment.

  43. Buc1987 Says:

I’m going to renew my tickets for next season though. When they call about it. I’m going to ask. Do I get them for 1/2 price this next season since I had to endure what they put me through this season?

  44. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I think the Glazers want to win, but wanting to win and winning is two entirely different things. There’s no way they want the embarrassment that has been brought to this franchise by Schiano. Its not a a matter of if he gets fired, it’s when. Why delay the inevitable and lose good players and coaches???

  45. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    Nice call 1987, lol

  46. SteveK Says:

    Buc1987,

You should ask them if Dom plans on addressing depth, SLB, TE, Slot WR with the 18m in cap?

Also, ask them why they will pay Freeman 500k per week, for nada, but let Mike Bennett walk for 5m on the year?

  47. Buc1987 Says:

I don’t Stevek…It’s like they like throwing money away…ala Gruden.

  48. Buc1987 Says:

These owners make no sense to me anymore. Maybe it is truly goofy Bryan and Joel Glazer playing around with daddy’s money and are clueless. The Bucs are like their leggos or something or tinkertoys.

  49. Buc1987 Says:

They say stuff like we’re committed to winning now. It’s almost like hogwash, like it’s all spin or just a silly little game that they are playing. I’m a confused mofo right now and that’s not just the vodka talking.

  50. Buc1987 Says:

I want to give them the benefit of the doubt…they basically bought my team its first SB. They have money, so throw everything you have it. Have some moral decency for your fans. The fans of your team are suffering right now. They paid there money this season. Season ticket sales jumped in the offseason for the first time in years. Fix this effing mess in the offseason.

  51. Buc1987 Says:

And no I don’t blame the coach. I blame the person that hired the coach.

  52. Buc1987 Says:

Okay I’m done “chirping” for now.

  53. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    Great link ronco.

The Glazers are in a bit of a tough situation at this point. If they fire Schiano now (which I still think they should), they run the risk of looking like trigger happy owners that don’t give their coaches an opportunity to succeed. I don’t think anyone aside from Peter King would feel that way, but that probably is a legit concern. If they don’t fire Schiano and he goes on to win 3 of the last 4 or so, there may be people calling for us to keep him, thinking that we have turned the corner. Plus, by keeping him, they may be able to get a franchise QB with a premium pick.

In reality, I think they put too much trust in the guys they’ve hired. Problem is, the guys they have hired aren’t very good at what they do. It’s not like the Glazers are football savvy enough to call Schiano and tell him to run more press coverage, or not to be so predictable on offense, or to make a certain adjustment at halftime. They probably have about the same amount of football knowledge as most of us, if not even less. They need to hire guys who know what they are doing, instead of taking a chance on questionable guys, with the hopes of hitting a home run.

  54. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“And no I don’t blame the coach. I blame the person that hired the coach”

    —–

That’s a cop out. They are both to blame, but you can’t not blame the coach. Why? He has guys in his ear telling him what to do. He’s choosing to be stubborn and do his thing. Does he strike you as the kind of guy that takes other people’s advice very often?

  55. Hawaiian Buc Says:

By that same standard, why did you blame Freeman for playing poorly? Why not blame the guy coaching him? Do you blame Wannstedt for the kicker missing a FG too? Seriously, Schiano sucks, period.

  56. Buc1987 Says:

Hawaiian Buc…if the Glazers were TRULY committed to winning in they would have brought in big name coach to begin with. From a DB coach (Raheem) to a college coach (Schiano). That’s why I don’t blame the coach. He didn’t call them. They called him.

  57. Buc1987 Says:

Schotty did interview for the job. I don’t know what happened there. I’m pretty sure Cowher won’t go near us or might not even want to coach altogether anymore. It might be that the_Buc_Realist was saying all summer long. Dominik is the problem.

  58. PRBucFan Says:

    Ronco

    Great article man.

As I said before, we have no idea what’s really going on.

And it seem’s that technically they aren’t lying as some would suggest

  59. Buc1987 Says:

All I can think of is there better be a major facelift on this franchise in the offseason. The Glazers better start showing a MAJOR commitment to winning or the Culverhouse days are upon us. It’s sad. I did say to my wife after Gruden hoisted that trophy, “well I can die now honey”. So atleast I got to see that. So I thank the Glazers for that. I’m 43 now, and I don’t think I will see that trophy raised anytime soon.

  60. Joe Says:

The Glazers better start showing a MAJOR commitment to winning or the Culverhouse days are upon us. I

Dropping a quarter-billion dollars on free agents the past two years ain’t enough for you?

  61. Buc1987 Says:

Good post ronco. Thanks for that.

  62. Buc1987 Says:

No Joe it’s not. Is there cap money left?

  63. Buc1987 Says:

Joe I’m of the belief that good coaching wins games. I’m sorry but Dungy gave me this belief. It does not matter how much talent a player has if he does not have a good coach, he will under-perform. You could stock the team up with talent and hire Richard Williamson and the team would suck. That’s just my belief.

  64. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Buc1987,

Problem with spending all the cap money is that we will be in salary cap hell within a year or two. We have some guys coming up with some big time contracts, and we have to have room for them. Also, there were a bunch of guys we didn’t go after simply because they didn’t want them, due to their “locker room presence”. John Abraham and Dwight Freeney are two examples of this. When your coach can’t get along with people, it creates a problem in getting free agents. Most big time players have an ego and may not be the easiest to deal with. But guess what, that’s your job as an NFL coach. If Bill Parcells can deal with Lawrence Taylor, I don’t want to hear about Schiano not being able to deal with John Abraham. Give me a freaking break!

  65. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @1987,

So does that mean you’ve finally officially woken up from la la land and realized how terrible Schiano is (even though you won’t blame him so you can save a little face)? Good to have you back buddy.

  66. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I promise you that if Schiano wanted some more free agents, he would have them. He’s gotten everything he’s wanted from the day he walked in One Buc. His offense doesn’t need a good tight end, remember? We don’t need a slot WR, because we love to go power formations with only one or two WR’s. We are just going to run the ball into a brick wall, and we are even going to tell you when we are going to run it by our formation. We don’t even attempt to fool anyone. And we’re not going to make any adjustments at halftime (or at any other point), because we are just going to continue to do what we do time and time again. I just can’t figure out why we are winless.

  67. Joe Says:

No Joe it’s not. Is there cap money left?

So the Glazers should go Danny Snyder and Jerry Jones and buy all sorts of free agents and get into salary cap hell?

Gee, that’s proven to be a winner, hasn’t it?

  68. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“Joe I’m of the belief that good coaching wins games.”

“And no I don’t blame the coach. I blame the person that hired the coach”

“if the Glazers were TRULY committed to winning in they would have brought in big name coach to begin with.”

    “Dominik is the problem.”

    “Is there cap money left?”

    ———

You’re all over the place on these comments. Must be some good Vodka. So you believe you can’t win without good coaching, but it’s the owners fault because there’s cap room left, which obviously means they aren’t committed to winning. But wait, it’s Dominik’s fault. Oh no, it’s not the coach, but it’s the guy who hired the coach. So basically it’s everyone’s fault. In your drunken ways, you are probably 100% right, with the exception that you appear to be giving Schiano a pass. He is front and center in this debacle, make no mistake.

  69. Eric Says:

I kinda think we’re in some sort of hell now.

  70. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Eric,

No we are just fine. Schiano told us that the wins are going to come. Doesn’t that make you feel better?

  71. Eric Says:

I haven’t felt good since Raheem Morris took the podium in 08.

I had a sick feeling in my stomach then, and it ain’t getting any better.

  72. Splengo Says:

    Go Bucs!

  73. Paul Says:

I think he’s still injured and can’t run man all day yet.

  74. Chef Paul Says:

Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz says we know what we are going to do and the other team knows what we are going to do. Everyone knows what we are going to do. We are just going to out execute them.

To me that sounds like Greggies philosophy. The only time it works in college is the one year a decade the Hawkeyes have better talent than the other teams.(Except they never have better talent than Ohio State or Michigan) In the NFL everyone is talented so it won’t, and doesn’t work here for sure

  75. jb Says:

Same Old Chit with this coaching staff!

  76. PRBucFan Says:

Hawaiian you have literally have had something to say for almost everyones post.

    Ahahaha That’s too funny lol

  77. buccanAy Says:

the Glazers have done everything, IMO, they can to build a winning team over the past few years, EXCEPT, hire a competent GM. Not a “cap manager”, but a real General Manager of Football Operations. Dominik seems to have very little vision and seems to capitulate to whoever seems to hold the power…it shoud be the GM. We need a strong GM, with a proven history in the NFL.

  78. JonBuc Says:

It would be like Denver having Manning run the pistol. Perhaps that example is over the top…but not by much.

  79. Buc1987 Says:

I think it’s wonderful that people were answering me at 2-2:30 in the a.m. Yes Hawaiian I am all over the map. Joe yes if there were still players out there to get, then why the hell not. Either way from what I’ve read on these boards is the Glazers HAD to spend the money. They had no choice, because I think if they did have the choice, they might not have. It’s quite obvious that as far as coaching goes they have went on the cheap back to back. What’s Schiano’s salary anyways? I know Raheem was getting paid peanuts. I used to like the fact that the owners stayed away from the fb operations and only signed checks. I thought it was a good thing, and still do to a point, but not if they are going to do it on the cheap as far as coaching goes.

  80. Buc1987 Says:

buccanAy…the Glazers LOVE Dominik. He’s there Boy Wonder.

  81. TJ Ware Says:

Have you idiots read that revis is the second ranked Corner in the league in MAN OR ZONE. Our defense is fine..you cant be perfect…Richard Sherman played A TON of zone Last night. Patrick Peterson got abused by Golden Tate in the 2nd half because he was playing man the whole game… Richard sherman got abused by TY hilton when he played man. Check the ALL 22 Footage…ITS IMPOSSIBLE to ask a guy to play Man 90% of the time. Find another topic. We have the worst fans and reporters. You guys are idiots
