Spence, McCoy Meeting High Expectations
October 6th, 2013Bucs pass rush coach and former NFL star Bryan Cox is always a good listen. Here’s part of his latest weigh-in on the Bucs’ defense, via Bucccaneers.com video.
Cox names rookie nose tackle Akeem Spence as a surprise defensive performer who has done a good job. Cox also explains that Gerald McCoy has taken the next step in his leadership of the team.
Remember, it was Cox who told Joe months ago that McCoy’s greatest challenge was making those around him better.
“I saw a guy that was mature, ready to take the next step, very into it in the meetings, very intelligent. And so you’d just like to think and hope that this year he can build and bring some guys with him,” Cox said of McCoy in June. “Because true great players bring, you know, other players’ level of play to a different level. That’s what we’d like to expect from him this season.”
Joe’s glad to hear McCoy is growing from his Pro Bowl season, versus relaxing after reaching NFL glory.
It’s good news on Spence, as well. Four games isn’t much of a sample, but Spence clearly has more potential than Roy Miller and was well worth trading up for in the fourth round.

Spence is a beasting 4th rounder, just like Mike Williams! I was glad when we picked him….just like I was glad when we traded our 1st for Revis, then we got Banks, and then Glennon. Its coming together. We just need Coach and company to change their ways or they need replacing!

Stongest guy on the field….really developing is Spence. I’m happy with tackle play….DE is another story.

I like Spence a lot. Bright future. And don’t give up on the rook yet Zam. I dont recall very many who were crowned hall of famers after there 1st start.

I don’t know, I think Clayborne is playing well. We just need the other side to step up.

Yes, Spence has been a bright spot.

now when need some Ends, If the pop-star somehow survives this year. Look for him to claim that it is the deepest draft he can remember for d-ends and he will draft 2 of them very high.

Say what you want about Schiano but the guy has a hell of an eye for talent especially defense. Its incredible what he has done with this defense in such a short time. It went from horrid and getting dominated by the jaguars to being able to shut down Drew Bees. Noboby is running the ball on this team.
Hopefully he can recover from the Josh Freeman BS and get a chance to finish what he started. He took the bullet for Freeman when it is on Freeman. A qb late for the game and team bus?!? That’s insane to me. People aren’t seeing it for what it is. Schiano has his flaws and I hope he adapts when it comes to handling players and not treating them like college kids or he won’t last. But if he can keep the team until it comes together I think they will be fine.

If only the offense wasn’t such a disgrace the whole league would be talking about this beastly defense.
October 6th, 2013 at 11:00 am
Also there’s some stupidity out there that the Raiders are gonna sign Freeman and make him starter. If they somehow make that catastrophic mistake we should lob em a call to get Terrelle Pryor. Pryor is much better than Freeman right now and has more upside.

People still riding freeman let it go

October 6th, 2013 at 11:40 am
If only they could get Dquan “MIA” Bowers to show up!!!

@ Tampa Tony
I am also hopeful that players like Gorrer Johnson & Banks will develop along with Means & Gholston.
I think he does have an eye for defensive talent…lets hope his choice of Glennon is right also.

Nice to read a positive spin article. Some will blame Schiano and his coaching staff for Freeman’s regression as a Buc, but Schiano’s group has two of Rah’s draft picks (GMC and Mason Foster) playing the best football of their relatively short careers. Also seeing guys like Martin, David, Barron, Spence and others contribute almost immediately makes me feel comfortable saying Dom + Schiano > Dom + Morris in terms of drafting talent that helps the Bucs now (even if it hasn’t turned into alot of W’s for the team as of yet). I know the past few weeks have been horrible for Bucs fans, but hopefully cooler heads prevail and the coaches and team find a way to turn this thing around.

Good grief, now someone is trying to copy my name too….alright. Play it that way Punk!
….I’ll be under a new name. And the people that matter will know me.
Anymore posts from someone as “MadMax” is an imposter…..sad its coming to this 🙁
Joe, you need to get a forum going where people have user names and passwords.

So apparently the Raiders have told Freeman he can walk right in and start. Bucs have gotta offer a 4th to the Raiders for Pryor, he’s better than Freeman right now and has much more upside. With our weapons and his legs the Bus offense would become instantaneously better.

@ NY Buc
I also welcome not only a positive article but articles that prompt discussions on how to move forward. The Glazers have decided that Schiano is our coach for now….so I’m rooting for him to succeed….not fail….so go the Bucs.
I am encouraged that we are starting to develop some speed with our offense…..Owusu, Underwood, Page & Demps.
We look like we are in slow motion sometimes.
October 6th, 2013 at 1:30 pm
You can try to ignore the obvious, but it keeps coming – great that our defensive guys are showing up – too bad our coach isn’t.
October 6th, 2013 at 1:37 pm
@ White Tiger
You’re posts are getting old…..we know Schiano/Sully are “under seige”….the article is about Spence & McCoy, not coaching.
October 6th, 2013 at 1:59 pm
Watching Pats vs Bengals and watching Chris Jones, who we let walk earlier this year and Wallace Gilberry who we let walk last year, both playing awesome and both with a sack in the first half. Further proof that whoever evaluates talent (DOMINICK!!!!) needs to fired. FIRE DOMINICK!!!!
October 6th, 2013 at 2:50 pm
LOL @ Bucnnole
Brother chill out, they haven’t even established anything consistent to go to the dregree of your stupid hatred. 1 sack, when our D line and LBs have been making sacks.
Oh I forgot we have to be blinded by hatred, Olgetree caught two passes in one game ????? fire Dom!!!!!!!!
October 6th, 2013 at 4:25 pm
According to some, Dominik doesn’t know what he’s doing…so your article can’t possibly be correct, Joe. You must’ve misinterpreted Cox’s statements because the “fire everyone” crowd disagrees.

@TampabaybuCTfan….get a life idiot! Stop copying other names here.
Joe?
