Schiano Sheds More Light On Glennon Courting
October 22nd, 2013“I’ve known Mike a long time, you know, I recruited Mike at Rutgers and wanted him to be, you know he was the top quarterback, back however many years ago that was, on our recruiting board. So I’ve been aware of Mike. And always when you recruit a kid and you like him you always follow him. And then when I got to Tampa, you know, and we were in the draft process, my second draft, we started talking about, you know, the position, and we’re talking about guys. He caught our eye, and he caught Mark Dominik’s and our scouts’ eyes. So then, when someone catches your eye, you put more eyeballs on the tape and you watch. And we watched every single throw the guy made. And then we went back to his junior year. And the more you watched, you know, the more I liked him and the more Mark liked him. And so we came to an agreement; that this was going to be our guy, if available. And we’re very fortunate that he was available.” — Greg Schiano, speaking today to the Panthers media.
Joe hadn’t heard the above level of detail previously, regarding the drafting of Mike Glennon. It gives some rare insight into the Bucs’ draft process.
Greg Schiano was very relaxed talking to the Carolina media today, and his comment seemed to paint a picture of Schiano and his staff scouting college players and then comparing notes with rockstar general manager Mark Dominik and his staff before reaching a consensus on what players to pursue further.
Of course, Glennon’s “the guy” now, so the QB study is moot. But one could have fun reading between the lines of Schiano’s comments.
October 22nd, 2013 at 5:16 pm
There you have it. Lots of eyeballs.
October 22nd, 2013 at 5:24 pm
At least he’s better than freefree……Thank God they cut that assclown!
October 22nd, 2013 at 5:28 pm
Yea , the wins are piling up with the phenom and the coach who recruited him.
October 22nd, 2013 at 5:37 pm
He has managed some good drives in his few games… Could have been even better if the o-line could be like a “stone wall” and keep defenders out of the back field and cut out all those penalties!
Still needs quite a bit of work but if he can continue to improve and be a good Qb, maybe the Bucs can focus on the offensive line in the draft…
October 22nd, 2013 at 5:44 pm
While reading that quote I couldn’t help but picture Greggy rubbing his shaft the whole time he was talking. And at every comma he says “oh yeah”
That guy is disgusting
October 22nd, 2013 at 6:11 pm
Yet at the beginning of the season Schiano said Josh was his guy.
October 22nd, 2013 at 6:14 pm
Well, all I know is I like the 59 yrd td play to Jackson, number 1 play on ESPN today, thrown by Glennon, in the one spot the db couldn’t get at. Ehh, apposed to the debacle Freeman put on last night. Guess Schiano knows better third rd qb talent than Dom and Rah knew about 1st rd qb talent.
October 22nd, 2013 at 6:20 pm
This is all part of Jughead’s plan: Once the roster is filled with former Rutgers players, high school players Jughead recruited, and former Big East players Jughead coached against, we will have success. Schiano Men!
What a freakin’ disaster.
October 22nd, 2013 at 6:21 pm
@ JK
Link? Source?
I’ve never heard Schiano say Freeman was “his guy.” All he ever said was that Freeman was “our starter”, which he in fact was whenever Schiano said that.
All this tells me is that the organization intended to go into this season with Freeman as the starter, to at least give him a few games to show whether or not there was any reason to believe he should be the guy going forward.
Freeman failed, and they moved on. Simple as that.
October 22nd, 2013 at 6:28 pm
@ Chris
You do realize that ball was completely underthrown right? We got incredibly lucky VJax stopped his route and pulled it in with one hand, all credit goes to him for that catch. Napoleon does not have a good deep ball.
October 22nd, 2013 at 6:29 pm
It was pretty obvious that Schiano didn’t like Freeman. So why didn’t he give Glennon a legitimate chance to earn the job in the preseason? Why name Freeman the starter only to go through the media circus that made our organization look unprofessional (which it was), when Schiano wanted Glennon to start anyway? And so far Glennon has looked pretty good except for some costly rookie mistakes, but if he had as much experience as Free did then he’d probably be even better. Why throw him into the fire in the middle of the season rather than start him from the beginning? Now was not the time to waste a season “developing” Glennon when Schiano won’t even be back next year to continue this because he has done an awful job all around not just with the QB situation.
October 22nd, 2013 at 6:37 pm
I like Glennon. But not as a the qb of the future. Dude just doesn’t have a good deep ball ever.
October 22nd, 2013 at 6:39 pm
@WalkdaPlank
We can’t know for sure what goes on behind closed doors at One Buc Place, but for all we know Schiano may hev wanted to start Glennon week one. It certainly looks like the Glazers and/or Dom were intent on giving Freeman a chance to either prove himself or shoot himself in the foot.
Hell, the Glazers even admitted that they “still needed some convincing” to move on from Freeman after week three.

Mike glennon mob
October 22nd, 2013 at 6:53 pm
If Glennon is starter-grade by the end of the year (big if), Schi will be back and given the chance to win with his guy and no inherited distractions. Freeman played that poorly last night.
October 22nd, 2013 at 6:57 pm
Mike Williams let slip, that Glennon had been getting half the snaps with the a First team- since training camp.
That was. Posted here.
No, Glennon was Schianos guy since the minute he was drafted.
Problem is- he isn’t very good. I’m starting to like things about him- but he can’t throw the long ball- or deep side line patterns. And while he had ran. He is turtle slow.
Defenses can stack up on him
October 22nd, 2013 at 7:07 pm
Oh, and he’s a rookie. Oh yeah and he didn’t throw a pic last game and shouldn’t have had one in the previous game if it weren’t for eraser head stopping his pattern Now that your love for Josh is over, thanks to argueably the worst game a qb has played in the last 8 yrs, you’ll bring Glennon down. And I love how you make pick on his looks. Why? Do you miss the prettiness of Josh’s looks? Explains a lot then. My god, I don’t think Denver cares about Payton’s looks.
October 22nd, 2013 at 7:14 pm
And I for one miss the era of the ugly football player. I thought Lambert, Nichese, Butkus and Otis Sistrunk( from the planet Mars) were all great looking football players.
October 22nd, 2013 at 7:14 pm
An upgrade for sure
October 22nd, 2013 at 7:17 pm
@ Chris
And that goofy, Bucky Beaver-looking John Elway did pretty well for himself.
October 22nd, 2013 at 7:30 pm
Don’t forget Eli, Stafford, Matt Ryan, and Drew Brees has that thing growing off his face. They all look dumb. Aaron Rodgers looks like pedophile when he grows a beard. Andrew Luck looks like a dope too. All great qbs
October 22nd, 2013 at 7:34 pm
Illuminati,
Watch the way you talk about one of Eric Cartman’s 53 fathers.
October 22nd, 2013 at 7:39 pm
Give Glennon a chance, kid looks good so far! THe deep ball will come….think about this, if that is the only thing his critics can harp on then we’re in good shape.
October 22nd, 2013 at 7:40 pm
I didn’t like glennen at first but I like him better now but let see what he does on Thursday I think were in for a blow out
October 22nd, 2013 at 7:40 pm
But the coach needs to go
October 22nd, 2013 at 7:43 pm
Bucky Beaver! Haven’t heard that in a while
Chris- son! Where have you been?
I’ve said , since he was drafted- that Glennon isn’t a “franchise QB”.
He does some things good, but not enough to be a starter.
He’s a good guy, and is accurate on short to mid range throws. He is careful with the ball
Can’t throw long ball. Immobile, inconsistent, bad decision making when pressured. Gets happy feet in pocket.
Not my assessment. This is the opinion of multiple sourest at the draft. It’s why he was a 3rd round pick.
So far, he hasn’t been under any pressure. He’s been blitzed a lot- but by crappy defenses.
Thursday night will be a real test. Carolina can bring hear.
Personally- I hope he hangs in there.
He’s our QB.
But to date- he hasn’t throw the long pass well. He is horrible in 4th quarter, and hasn’t been able to beat horrible teams/ defenses.
I haven’t changed anything I say- except that I am growing fonder of Glennon.
But still don’t think he is the long term answer
October 22nd, 2013 at 7:43 pm
Technically Chris, Otis was from the “University of Mars”. Carry on : )
October 22nd, 2013 at 7:47 pm
But would love to be wrong about him!
October 22nd, 2013 at 7:51 pm
LOL, Bucs, yeah, Dandy Don did say from the University of Mars
October 22nd, 2013 at 8:15 pm
@ Chris, believe it or not it was Alex Karras who actually said it!
October 22nd, 2013 at 8:21 pm
Next year’s coach may want to bring in “His Guy” also. The biggest mistake the Bucs made with Freeman was drafting him in the first place.
October 22nd, 2013 at 8:26 pm
Patrick
Schiano is the biggest mistake
October 22nd, 2013 at 8:40 pm
Geez, it was Karras, all over the place on my history.
October 22nd, 2013 at 9:26 pm
“The biggest mistake the Bucs made with Freeman was drafting him in the first place.”
Years wasted
October 22nd, 2013 at 9:45 pm
Free was Rah’s mancrush. And Dom got roped in. Thank God the Bus’s didn’t extend him…money saved there may save Schiano & Dom. Imagine if the Bucs had signed the Moron for $100 mil. Apocalypse Now.
October 22nd, 2013 at 9:56 pm
Again, any of you pin heads who think Glennon doesn’t have a deep ball….GO BACK AND WATCH HIS COLLEGE TAPE!!! Something about stupid fans who watch a guy obviously throw away some deep balls in the three games he’s been in and then act like he was trying to hit the receiver just amazes me with the ignorance. If you would get off you dumb, numb a#@!s and watch his college film you would see that this kid has all the throws Freeman has but he’s just a hell of a lot more accurate. Did any of you see one of our receivers open on a deep ball that Glennon over threw?? Every pass they were covered and he just tossed it over their head and out of bounds. It keeps the defense honest. Unlike Freeman he wasn’t stupid to throw into tight coverage and risk a pick. On the throw to V-Jax it was right where it had to be. It wasn’t underthrown, V-Jax just had to adjust to the ball. If you watch the film (A novelty for most of you) you’ll see that the defender was behind Jackson, not in front. Glennon threw the ball to the perfect spot, allowing Jackson to adjust to the ball before the defender got turned around. If anything, it may have been overthrown. It would have been easier for Jackson to cut in front of the defender and make the play but V-Jax was the only one who was going to catch that pass. That makes it a good pass. Stop ragging on stuff you no nothing about. You have plenty to bitch about this season without making stuff up.
October 22nd, 2013 at 10:07 pm
@Bobby Amen
October 22nd, 2013 at 10:14 pm
Umm..we keep playing the way we been and we drafting Manziel or Mariota
October 22nd, 2013 at 10:26 pm
So how about the rest of the QBs that you couldn’t recruit because they weren’t in your area genius. If Dominik actually did this then he has to go before we draft the next QB, cause that was probably the same reason why we drafted Freeman, cause the HC knew the guy…. What a tool…
Glennon is ok, but he is not going to be any good as long as he continues to play for this coaching staff and checking down even when there are deep receivers open…
October 22nd, 2013 at 10:28 pm
Mariota please.
October 22nd, 2013 at 10:35 pm
Damn Bobby thanks for that. I still have to go to Thursday nights game. Stop bashing Beaker. I have to cheer for him in 2 days. Bring us the win Beaker Dynamite.
Bring me something to cheer about Glennon. Even if you don’t win the game for the Bucs. Just score points on this Panthers D. Show us something kid. Your at home under the lights. Bring it!
October 22nd, 2013 at 10:38 pm
I really do kind of like Glennon. But let’s face it, anybody would look good after watching Josh all this time.
October 22nd, 2013 at 11:31 pm
I hate the damn Carolina Pussycats!
Be nice to at least make a game of it!
October 22nd, 2013 at 11:52 pm
did anyone see Glennon deep ball in college day? That kids can make it happen….

Glennon highlight from NC St day!
October 23rd, 2013 at 12:06 am
Glennon used his TE in the actual game,,,, and I haven’t see deer in the headlight look in Glennon yet.
October 23rd, 2013 at 1:30 am
I, for one, would rather have a QB who can make every throw but the deepball over a guy who can only throw the deepball. Plus he is a rook, many successful QB’s have developed a better deep ball over the course of their careers.
October 23rd, 2013 at 1:55 am
Oh good lord it’s Bucsparilla day on Thursday night. Fans are encouraged to dress up in pirate garb. Here I was thinking of dressing my face up like a clown and wearing a coach t-shirt with a whistle around my neck.
October 23rd, 2013 at 3:44 am
Tom, can you see him on the field to support your observation? Are you the middle linebacker? Just wondering?
October 23rd, 2013 at 6:13 am
Viking fans get ur SB tickets. The idea that Dom didn’t have a back up plan to @ least trade freeman for @ least a draft pick is really piss poor.
October 23rd, 2013 at 6:31 am
Bobby: I love your comments; but those deep passes Glennon has attempted thus far have been anything but accurate. Both of the passes to Jackson were under thrown. As for the ones thrown out of bounds on purpose. I didn’t think that when he threw them. Good QB’s are willing to throw it to let the receiver make a play. You know that.
I’ll cheer for whomever is taking the snaps and right now that’s Glennon. As far as I’m concerned now Freeman is a Viking.
None of us know f Glennon is the “franchise” QB. After Freeman’s first three games he sure looked like he could be. Around here I’m not sure we know what one looks like. We’ve been searching for 38 years.
Bucky Beaver…….that brought back some memories. Do they even make Ipana toothpaste anymore?
October 23rd, 2013 at 6:45 am
Does it matter how schiano handles drafts? he won’t be participating in another one
October 23rd, 2013 at 6:56 am
@Bobby – Some of us have jobs, families and interests outside of devoting the hours a day it would take to go back and watch the college tape on every player we have on the team. I’m not interested in what Glennon did in college. That’s for coaches to worry about. I’m interested in what they do in the pros, specifically with our team. In the pros, Glennon underthrows a ton of deep balls when he manages to not check down. I’m not knocking him because I realize he’s a rookie in his 3rd game as a starter. He’s gotten progressively better but I would hesitate to call him a serviceable quarterback yet. By year’s end we’ll see if he’s good enough to hold the spot for another year while we’re maneuvering for a chance to draft Winston
October 23rd, 2013 at 7:12 am
I have no issue with Schiano’s drafts so far. As for Glennon, I also have no issue with Dom and Schiano drafting a QB that Schiano is familiar with in the THIRD ROUND as a backup plan. Some of you are acting like he drafted him first overall. Ownership and Dom decided to give Freeman a chance to prove himself, and Schiano probably asked to bring someone that runs the game the way he likes just in case Freeman falls apart. Seems to have worked out alright so far.
October 23rd, 2013 at 8:29 am
After reading this article I am completely assured in the entire organization that these tremendous talent evaluators will get it fixed. The bar is so low now that fans are looking atcsingle plays during games for bright spots. Hit the bricks Dominick, Schiano and other 80 assistants. Get this virus out of the building.
October 23rd, 2013 at 9:44 am
Patrick in VA,
Let’s just see if Glennon can continue to improve each game. If that is the case, then we might FINALLY see a Tampa QB develop.
A win tomorrow would be huge.
October 23rd, 2013 at 9:55 am
I’m really tired of Schiano & Co. continuing to “sell” Glennon to the fans. Sheesh, take it easy already. He hasn’t really done anything yet.
