Bucs Defense Ranked No. 16
October 15th, 2013The Bucs’ defense has had extreme highs and lows this season, which explains their No. 16 ranking (350.8 yards per game) through Week 6 of the 2013 NFL season.
Sunday against the Eagles surely was the low point, with the Bucs getting burned for huge plays in the passing game and letting Philly ice the win with 11 consecutive runs on a fourth-quarter drive.
For those who don’t think total yards allowed is a fair way to measure a defense, Joe always remembers Derrick Brooks discussing how the glory-years defense set out to fight for “every blade of grass.”
The Bucs are middle-of-the-pack in most defensive categories. But one bright spot remains the rush defense. The Bucs led the NFL last season in run defense, and this year they’re allowing 3.8 yards per carry, good for seventh best in the league. And 20.2 points allowed per game is 10th best.
As for the offense’s ranking, well, Joe doesn’t want to further depress anyone.

“As for the offense’s ranking, well, Joe doesn’t want to further depress anyone.”
lol thanks for that. Ive always felt like points per game was the most important stat for a defense.
October 15th, 2013 at 1:31 pm
Our offense would be better if we didn’t get so many penalties. How many drives did a holding call kill on Sunday? I think 3-4 Times. We had the ball from inside our 5 yard line and glennon lead us out of there past the 50 for a holding call on first down.
Get it together Bucs, quit shooting yourself in the foot
October 15th, 2013 at 1:36 pm
@buc89, we Martin would’ve had over 100 yards rushing if not for the penaties that brought back 4 nice runs he made.
Nah………that’s not coaching, not at all. THAT is the reason they’re making so many mistakes! Coach Toes on the Line gives them so much crap about the trivial issues, they’re scared to death about making mistakes……consequently they make even more.

were 16th? Ticker Tape parade baby!
October 15th, 2013 at 2:16 pm
I can take a hint..im leaving…this site is for homers
October 15th, 2013 at 2:21 pm
McCoy, David, and Foster are quietly having monster years. Dom needs to start resigning, pronto. Who knows how much worse this year is gonna get, making them want to get out of dodge.
Too bad our secondary is being held back by schematics. Thought it was supposec to be the “no fly zone”. Tell nick foles that
October 15th, 2013 at 2:21 pm
I thought Schiano was doing a fantastic job with the defense? Isn’t he Dungy 2.0? These stats must be wrong. I’m going to find someone to blame. I blame the offense. Or Dominik. Maybe its because of the weather. Perhaps its the stat keepers. They must have it out for Schiano. Schiano is perfect.
October 15th, 2013 at 2:27 pm
@ SacBucs
Homers would be here trying to tell you what a fine job Schiano is doing, and not to worry, ANY move made by the team is a slice of 14 karat gold.
See anyone here saying that?
October 15th, 2013 at 2:31 pm
If we keep losing this stat will get worse. Afterall, they are just human and subject to continuous losses will weaken their will to succeed.

Flip floppers untalented talent evaluators
October 15th, 2013 at 2:43 pm

Where migel magnif at he know wassup
October 15th, 2013 at 3:00 pm
We are on pace to surpass last years measly sack total of 32.
October 15th, 2013 at 3:18 pm
@SacBucs
Whats good brotha. Had plenty of faith in Schiano I’ll admit that. And gave him plenty enough rope to hang himself (Well..smh). Damn near, reminiscent of Louis Leo “Lou” Holtz while he was with the Jets.
October 15th, 2013 at 3:34 pm
@ SacBucs
There were people telling me over and over that Schiano was going to be a great hire. I chose to believe them, but since the start of training camp this season and the first preseason game, you could tell something just wasn’t right. I don’t know if it was the way he handled the qb situation with Freeman, the MRSA outbreak or what, but it’s gone down hill faster than crap through a goose.
October 15th, 2013 at 3:46 pm
We ARE 10th in scoring D which is a more accurate representation of defensive prowess…but we’re 31st on 0…just counting down the days until the offseason at this point.
October 15th, 2013 at 3:47 pm
“Untalented talent evaluators”?! That really is it in a nutshell, isn’t it?! Well, sort of. There might be one or two we hit on…let me see…Dougy, Barron, A.C., G.M.C., David, Spence, Zuttah, Mikey, and others…
Are the Bucs perfect SacBucs? Hardly! But clearly, judging by the “homer” comment you are not a fan of the Bucs.
The defense is vastly improved over last year. The Philly game was an anomaly. I expect better things to come because I am an unabashed, unapologetic, optimistic, non flip-flopping Homer from Tampa Bay!!!
Go Bucs!
October 15th, 2013 at 3:57 pm
Hawaiian,
16th place isn’t fantastic? It’s twice as good as our overall record, tied for last place in league!
Always a silver lining, here in Schianoland!
October 15th, 2013 at 4:08 pm
I’m not sure but I think SacBucs was being sarcastic…..
October 15th, 2013 at 4:18 pm
Bucsfanman.
Um, defense actually isn’t improved from last year.
Last year, we were 1st against the run, last against pass
1st plus last = 16th
This year, 16th.
I am normally beaten up for being a homer. But just can’t do it right now. Schiano is a terrible coach.
And Brian Price, Arrelious Benn, Myron Lewis, and Luke Stocker alone is enough to get Dom fired! And there have been many more.
I think we need a house cleaning, and experienced GM /coach , to restore my optimism for the future. All these rookie GM/ coach moves aren’t working.
I hate seeing our team, with a lot of great players- struggle so badly.
October 15th, 2013 at 4:38 pm
Bah! What GM hits home runs with every single pick? Hmmm checking over your list there is only one that was picked within the last 3 drafts!!! The entire team is easy pickins these days with a recod of 0-5 but the fact is Dom is getting better at finding talent in drafts and has set up this team to win in free agency. Get used to Dom as our GM. Schiano, however…
We are on the right path. LAME DUCK FOR LOVIE!!!!
October 15th, 2013 at 4:51 pm
If Schiano goes, as does Dominick. He is responsible for all the hiring of coaches. He is responsible for trading up for Freeman. He is not the worst GM ever, but, he is incredibly middling. How much $ did he put into that offensive line this year? He chose to go with an unproven Bowers at DE, when there was plenty of $ to sign a vet. He signed Ogletree.
October 15th, 2013 at 4:53 pm
@joe, 16th in defense?
Actually we are tenth in points allowed which makes us 10th best.
now couple that with 2nd worst offense, and our defense is a lot better than our record. Which is all due to our coach.
October 15th, 2013 at 5:00 pm
All the hiring of coaches. So he dialed up all those rutgers coaches that came with Schiano. Good to know.
If i remember correctly we made splash signings in our biggest weakness – the secondary. As well as draft the thorpe award winner from last year. I dont remember everyone groaning about the Ogletree signing and we havent even seen Crabtree yet!
Im not goinh yo nitpick here but I definitely dont see failure on Doms part. Imagine what yall would be saying if he signed Freeman!
October 15th, 2013 at 5:02 pm
Resigned*
October 15th, 2013 at 5:15 pm
He drafted Freeman!! and traded up at that.
Every job title lists responsibilities. Whether it’s your job or my job or Dominick’s job. He controls all personnel. He drafts the players and signs the FA’s. That’s what his job responsibility is. Not coaching the players. Not game planning. That’s on Schiano.
Whether he let Raheem talk him into Freeman, or allowed Schiano to pick his staff, it’s ultimately his name on the line. He approves it all.
October 15th, 2013 at 5:41 pm
We are a horrible team. We are 0-5. 1-11.
This isn’t a mistake. Or a bad bounce, or a voodoo curse( hmm, meybe that!)
It’s who we are, and a good barometer of the team.
Schiano isn’t doing” a great job with the defense”
Great defenses aren’t 0-5
Dom hasn’t done a great job of building a secondary.
Great secondaries don’t go 0-5
I think most of us had high hopes for this season. But we weren’t realistic. We only have 2 WRs. Our QB and coach couldn’t co- exsist, no line depth, no pass rusher( thanks Dom, appreciate loosing Bennett), recovering Revis, with no depth behind him.
We weren’t a good team. We bought the stage show.
Dom and Shiano’s heads should roll.
And I can’t even imagine the uproar- if Freeman starts winning in Minnesota
October 15th, 2013 at 5:48 pm
I dont know, that rush D didnt help out much on the last drive.
October 15th, 2013 at 7:35 pm
Freeman winning in Minn is not happening.
October 15th, 2013 at 8:05 pm
“We are a horrible team. We are 0-5. 1-11.

Bingo! They must believe Schiano when he says we’ll get it right. It may take 10-15 years, but eventually Schiano may win his first close game. I can feel it. We just have to be patient. I mean, this team was a laughingstock before he took over. He said so himself. He wouldn’t lie.
October 15th, 2013 at 9:00 pm
Capt Tim,
We are a horrible team because our offense sucks. This is due to freeman.
If we drafted A huge high draft pick tight end, Freeman might still be here with an easy target to throw high percentage short passes to. But we went all defense and now our defense is great and the offense blows.
Schiano did the right thing by getting rid of freeman. It’s going to suck for this year. But if we develop Glennon he might turn into something special.
If not we get a high draft pick and a QB. And I would trade up for a high quality tight end.
October 15th, 2013 at 11:20 pm
@capt Tim. You say you hate to watch the team struggle with great players and you want Dom out? That doesn’t jive. You say Dom did a bad job of rebuilding the secondary but we were worst, almost worst in the history of the league, and this year we are ranked 16th do some homework before you just spout off will you?
October 15th, 2013 at 11:55 pm
@Jeb Buc,
I agree that is a bit hypocritical. However, Dominik also hired Schiano, which unfortunately makes him responsible for the mess we are in. He also either had his hands in or allowed Schiano to screw up the Freeman debacle. I am torn as to whether or not he should be fired, but firing him would be justified.
October 16th, 2013 at 9:32 am
Cool Bucs can stop the run! in a passing league…
