Wright Was A Surprise

September 1st, 2013

Perhaps it was Tom Crabtree’s twisted up ankle? Perhaps not.

Regardless, rookie Tim Wright made the Bucs’ roster as a fourth tight end. An undrafted free agent out of (all together now) Rutgers, Wright played wide receiver in college and is trying to make the transition to TE. He’s listed at 6-4, 220, and he looks that skinny in person.

Wright was granted some reps with the first team in practice and he talked to Joe about it a few weeks ago.

Joe kept an eye on Wright after that but really never saw him show much.

Joe gets that a guy like Wright might be a very worthwhile conversion project, so Joe’s surely not down on Wright being a Buccaneer. But it’s an interesting move — and a nice paycheck for Mr. Wright next week.

I would be very surprised if Wright makes it….there were over 700 players cut….surely one of them is more worthy of a roster slot than Wright.
I’m high on the Bucs and like a lot of things they have done…but we don’t need any “projects”…..maybe on the practice squad.
If Dom doesn’t pick up any player off waiver….I may join the Buc Realist…
By the way, Buc Realist….I’m not one of the many who call you an idiot!

  2. RBellBuc Says:

His size and ability doesn’t fit the offensive concept. Noble was closer to what they needed. I’m surprised by this unless they are looking to stash Noble onto the practice squad and Wright is here until a suitable replacement is found.

  3. RBellBuc Says:

Or maybe they want to use Wright as a decoy to get the other team to commit an extra DB to cover. But at Wright’s size he’s definitely a liability as a run blocker. They may decide to go with multiple TE sets and use Wright like a slot receiver. Who knows. I’m a little baffled by it. Then again he may just be here today and gone tomorrow.

  4. BucsQcCity Says:

This Rutgers bias is one of the only thing I don’t like about Schiano. He needs to stop restricting to players he coached or tried to recruit like Glennon.

  5. buc4life24 Says:

It is getting a little much withall the Rutgers connection. Would see it if there were a National Championship squad yr after yr….but cmon.

  6. SeanyMac in SC Says:

BucsQcCity, completely agree. In my opinion (just a Bucs fan here) the Rutgers bias is hurting the team.

  9. Deminion Says:

  10. Biglebowski Says:

Idiots post stupid crap like they’re in the know. 6’4 and 220 as a rookie is skinny but not out of the realm of what is needed to be productive. Winslow was 240 or so. I’m sure this guy can put on 20 lbs.

But hey, TB fans are always smarter than the 30 or so coaches on staff. Hence the drumroll for Glennon.

  11. SacBucs Says:

Im growing tired of this Rutgerrd nonsense

  12. tonytwocents Says:

His Rutgers bias tells me that his heart is still in NJ. Which means he cant shake off his college coach mentality. I hope Im wrong. But he needs to cut the cord from his college career (I’m lookin in the shadows at you Butch).

It looks like Dominik has given him the final say on the roster. With all the recent cuts, its time for Dom to work his magic and find a couple of quality backups. (wont be hard at all with our depth)

And instead of looking for players from NJ, just look around! This is Florida! We grow oranges, smuggle yayo, and breed football players! C’mon!

  13. underdogs Says:

I too, am concerned about he propensity for Rutgers players. It makes me wonder if coach is in touch with reality, or if he is simply awestruck with his old players who were OK in college, but maybe not in the NFL. Sure hope I will be proven wrong. I also hope the rest of the staff are able to put their two cents worth in.

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I am not too concerned about the Rutgers connection……

You can’t count Zuttah….so what do we have..

    Leonard/A Proven Pro
Underwood/Not a bad #4 (Schiano has cut him before)
    Wright (some concern here)

What may be more concerning is the Glennon/Tandy/Goode….(familiarity) issue. I think that works fine if the players work fine. The jury is still out on all three.

  15. RBellBuc Says:

Dominik claimed DT Chris Jones from the Texans

  16. RBellBuc Says:

Dominik claimed WR Russell Shepard from the Eagles.

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    OK…who gets cut?…..I say Wright is gone….

  18. Big Marlon B Says:

    @ eDDy

i agree 1000%, i even posted it on the original 53 man post. between injuries and solid DT depth, i think it was tough for Austin to see the lineup with the Giants. he has a ton of athletic ability, and i would imagine the Butch Davis connection would work in his favor.

the development of Wright would be a nice story, but i think RBell is correct. Wright might just be a placeholder until another TE can be brought in.

  19. Crotch_McGee Says:

Bucs claimed WR Russell Shepard off waivers from the Eagles.
A second-year undrafted free agent, Shepard found himself near the top of the depth chart earlier this summer after injuries decimated the Eagles’ receiver corps, but faded once the preseason lights came on. He’s just a depth signing.

  20. Bobby Says:

Kind of hoping we take a look at Drake Nevis since the Colts dumped him. He could be depth for that D-line.

  21. bucrightoff Says:

There’s a Rutgers bias, but Underwood was cut last year and Gary Gibson was just cut. Ok then…

  22. Curmudgeon Says:

How many Rutgers players are on the roster now? This is a stupid complaint. I think 4 and Zuttah was here before Schiano, so it doesn’t count… So 3. Brian Leonard is a quality player. Underwood is decent. Wright will probably be gone… So the Rutgers complaint is not supported by reality. Mostly it’s a way for the uninformed to sound like they know what they’re talking about when they bitch and moan about something.

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @bucrightoff

You are right there is a bias and that’s somewhat understandable….but it isn’t out of control

  24. Curmudgeon Says:

“stop restricting to players he coached or tried to recruit like Glennon”

I see no such restriction, as you put it… A restriction would indicate those are the only players he’s interested in… And Schiano, like EVERY OTHER COACH IN THE LEAGUE, will use personal knowledge of a player. If it were true that he was selecting inferior players for this team because of prior knowledge, some criticism might be in order… but that’s not what’s happening. Find some valid criticisms, please.

  25. chris Says:

I hope people know, that Dom has the final say on the final roster moves. Schiano and staff just put theire evals in

  26. RBellBuc Says:

Looks like the Jaguars are completely rebuilding their roster with newly claimed free agents. That a sign of a team that’s drafted poorly.

  27. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Curmudgeon

What’s up with these guys….whining and complaining about everything & not waiting until the final roster is chosen.

Why shouldn’t a coach use their personal knowledge of players to make six-one-have-dozen or the other decisions?
When all else is equal….go with what you know.
We don’t have that many Rutgers players anyway. And when Tim Wright gets cut…we will be less one more!!!

  28. ben Says:

    Owusu > Wright

  29. BucsQcCity Says:

    @Curmudgeon

No need to be aggressive.. It might just be a normal thing that happens when a college football coach gets to be a HC in the NFL. I checked the coaches/assistant with Schiano and there is near 40% (9/24) of the staff that comes from Rutgers, based on their bios:

    Brian Angelichio Tight Ends Coach
Jay Butler Head Strength and Conditioning Coach
    Bob Fraser Assistant Defensive Coordinator
Phil Galiano Assistant Special Teams Coach
Bob Gilmartin Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach
    Jeff Hafley Secondary-Safeties Coach
    Tem Lukabu Defensive Assistant
Kevin MacConnell Director of Football Operations
    Robb Smith Linebackers Coach

Does that matters? Maybe not, only a playoff berth matters to me but there is a Rutgers bias at Bucs One.

  30. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    BucsQcCity Says
“This Rutgers bias is one of the only things I don’t like about Schiano. He needs to stop restricting to players he coached or tried to recruit like Glennon.”

You do know its a myth? He’s only recruited a couple players from Rutgers and half of them have not even made the team.

All he’s done, on a roster of 90, is provide a couple opportunities. Beyond that, he hasn’t been biased at all.

Nothing personal, but I hate seeing this point brought up. Do the Bucs have 2-3 players from any other school? He must be biased for that school too.

  31. Curmudgeon Says:

    “Owusu > Wright”

Remains to be seen… ball security matters… I suspect we will see Owusu and Wright on the practice squad over the next few days.

  32. Splengo Says:

Prior to the draft I read that WR Chris Harper, Kansas State was high on the Bucs radar. Was a 4th round pick at the Seahawks. Don’t know what went wrong, but still worth a look. Some of us are partial to K-State guys.

  33. tonytwocents Says:

You cant deny the fact that there were almost a dozen or so Rutgers players on our training camp roster. Yes, most of them got cut, but we should have been doing everything we could to find the 90 best players available in the nation to compete for a starting job.

So are you telling me that 10% of the most talented rookies/free agents were from Rutgers?

Also, the fact that he signed all those guys only to cut almost all of them, tells me it was a waste of locker space that could have been used on someone less familiar, but more talented.

  34. Couch Fan Says:

Wow, people will find anything to complain about these days.

  35. Couch Fan Says:

Yes let’s complain that we didnt have anyone better to cut. You got to be kidding me with the this sillyness.

  36. tonytwocents Says:

please couch. are you really trying to come across as the voice of reason? you?? youre practically the co-founder of the Mike Glennon Mob. and YOU wanna talk about complaining?

you’re actually complaining about all the complaints…

  37. BucfansSUCK Says:

^^^Nothing worse than be scolded by a guy who spent all summer hating on Freeman. Nobody gives a rats arse what you think. Go back to drinking your prune juice Mr. High and Mighty

  38. bucrightoff Says:

There’s also a ton of Rutgers players on New England too…such a silly argument.

  39. chris Says:

Looking at this team from an outside view, I’d say this could be a bad bad year.

  40. Couch Fan Says:

Are you really trying to compare my opinion about a 5th year guy to you bitching about a couple rutger players who got cut? lmao come on you idiots… think, just a little bit.

  41. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Chris

All you have is an outside view….and I’d like to know why you think this team is worse than last year.
After all…..we replaced Myron Lewis with Darrelle Revis

I really feel sorry for you so-called fans who spout nothing but negativity. I prayed for you guys this morning…but I guess it didn’t work!!!

  42. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Couch

I agree…the Rutgers chatter is a waste of time….how about a discussion on these two new players
    Chris Jones & Russell Shepard

What’s with these guys?…I’m starting to feel we are being spammed by a bunch of redneck Panther fans….

  43. tonytwocents Says:

@bucrightoff, NE can suck my balls. theres your argument.

  44. Couch Fan Says:

I’ve seen russeel a few times being a gators fan. Definately worth a look. Dont know much about Jones but 12.5 sacks is impressive

  45. Curmudgeon Says:

Yeah, prayer doesn’t work… That aside, optimism was abundant until they got onto the field against opponents, and then they looked like the Keystone Cops. Does the clown show suddenly stop when the regular season hits?

On paper, this team should be vastly improved and challenge for the playoffs, but the evidence thus far is not encouraging.

  46. tonytwocents Says:

speaking of Russel Shepard, he also played some QB. start cheerleading couch fan.

  47. RBellBuc Says:

To make room on the 53-man roster for Jones & Shepard, Tampa Bay waived LB Najee Goode & released WR Tiquan Underwood.

  48. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Curmudgeon…..

    “Thus far”……

  49. Couch Fan Says:

Nah, Im confident Glennon will be fine at QB. After all, it’s not like he’s had his chance to prove he’s just a 6 wins a year QB yet.

  50. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers claimed DT Chris D. Jones (Texans) and WR Russell Shepard (Eagles) off waivers. LB Najee Goode and WR Tiquan Underwood were waived. They re-signed CB Deveron Carr, OL Jace Daniels, LB Ka’lial Glaud, DT Matthew Masifilo, TE Danny Noble, WR Chris Owusu and OT Mike Remmers to the practice squad.

Dam, I liked Goode. Best of luck to him

  52. BucfansSUCK Says:

    Couch

That’s only if Big Bird’s longneck is somehow fitted with a Hans Device so he doesn’t suffer a broken neck or whiplash when he ‘s sacked by a blitzing player. You’re the idiot.

  53. tonytwocents Says:

thanks for the update scotty… so they kept Wright on the 53. well alright. I guess we’ll have to trust Dom & Schiano. I still believe!

  54. bucrightoff Says:

So Underwood, another Rutgers guy, got released. Can we all please get off that stupid notion now?

  55. kh Says:

    @Curmudgeon

Doug Martin could have more carries on the first drive then he had all preseason. Martin makes our offense go, without him any “evidence” is far from complete.

  56. Tampabaybucfan Says:

So much for all the Rutgers BS….we now have exactly two players Schiano is responsible for….Tim Wright & Brian Leonard…..and I stll think Wright doesn’t make it.

  57. Couch Fan Says:

your azz sucks buttermilk, you think you’re smart but you come across as a pretentious fool. A smartazz and ringleader for every thing wrong with JBF. A crappy fan.

  61. Couch Fan Says:

Aww, I must of made you look stupid a few times huh? It’s ok I forgive you for having to make up a new name to hide behind. LMAO

  62. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Bucfanssuck

What kind of message are you trying to send with that name. You can’t blame me for being skeptical.

Are you saying we all suck?……are you one of those redneck Panther fans spamming JBF?

I’m just asking….clear the air here…are you really a Buc Fan?

  63. BucfansSUCK Says:

NOLA will kick yalls azz both times, whiners

  64. Couch Fan Says:

LMAO. A saints fan. Coming to JBF… they must be worried

  65. RBellBuc Says:

I think the Bucs are going to try to stash Goode on the practice squad. Hopefully his pick six isn’t still fresh on the minds of any of the GM’s if they even watched. lol

  66. Tampabaybucfan Says:

BucfansSuck calling someone else a crappy fan…..that is laughable.
How can you have a name like that and call yourself a fan.

    I think it should be:

    TheBucFansSucksucks

  67. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I will put Buc 1987 on your azz and you will be history!!!

    Actually, I figured it out.

YOU ARE AMANDA TYNES IN DRAG!!!

  68. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Goode might make the practice squad but there are already 7 on it and we have linebacker Glaud there….so don’t know about Goode….

  69. Stanglassman Says:

Underwood went from making the team to not making the Practice squad, that’s harsh. Shepard takes his WR spot on the 53 and Uwusu gets the P.S. spot.

  70. chris Says:

Its that we lack depth in the front 7, we don;t have a pass rush, which will hurt the secondary regardless if Revis and Sherman were back there. We have two Safeties who get burned deep. Barron cannout cover.

And we have a huge question mark at the QB position and two all pro guards who are injury prone with no depth behind them.

  71. chris Says:

Sorry guys, I’m a realist and sure it may come off negative, but it’s the truth

  72. Couch Fan Says:

Dont ever apologize for having an opinion. Screw the cry babies that can’t handle it.

  73. Splengo Says:

    TampaBay,

Get a grip dude, Goode has 1 year of accrued service on the active roster. He is not eligible for the PS.

Just kidding about the grip, but I owed you one remember? Lol

  74. RBellBuc Says:

Bucs waived LB Najee Goode. ^^^^^
He’ll be a prime candidate for the practice squad after initially making the 53. The Bucs needed to clear room for new receiver Russell Shepard.

  75. Bucnjim Says:

Having a difference of opinion is one thing, but it gets old when guys are bitching and complaining every single day. There is a lot to get excited about this year! Martin & Leonard in the backfield; Jackson & Williams; Joseph and the rest of the line getting healthy; McCoy & Clayborne; Revis & Goldson; David & Foster; Page returning kicks; even though most of you disagree I would include Freeman as well. I think he has a great year, but I guess that’s just my opinion.

  76. Dmac21bucs Says:

This is like an episode of the Real Housewives of Tampa Bay

  77. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Splengo

Your’e right about Goode….he was so invisible last year, I forgot.

Don’t remember you owe me one but I’ll take your word for it.

    Bye, Bye

  78. Splengo Says:

    Tampabay,

Just kidding man, I ‘m on your team. Enjoy your holiday.

  79. scubog Says:

Now that was some funny banter. I didn’t see much from Wright this pre-season and suspect he is on the 53 man roster only until Crabtree heals. Underwood isn’t eligible for the Practice Squad, but I believe Goode may be if the Bucs choose to bring him back. See how easy it is to stay on topic.
