Special Teams Love & Marketing 101
September 10th, 2013The Bucs have more than 700,000 followers on social media, yet the team did nothing yesterday to tell those fans about the season kickoffs of The Greg Schiano Show and The Doug Martin Show on WDAE-AM 620/95.3 FM last night.
For Joe, this is an inexcusable oversight, especially when the team is battling so hard to sell tickets and a potential TV blackout looms for Sunday’s home-opener.
Schiano and Martin are two faces of the franchise. They’re “Buccaneer Men.” They speak well, and if Joe were a member of Team Glazer, Joe would want every possible local sports fan to hear Schiano and Martin represent the Buccaneers on the radio.
Joe’s passionate about this kind of stuff because Joe wants to see the Bucs thrive, and this was a missed opportunity. Perhaps the resignation of the Bucs’ Chief of Marketing on Monday had something to do with the oversight. Regardless, that shouldn’t ever happen.
Schiano carried himself well on the air in the face of callers expressing their outrage over the loss at the Meadowlands.
Schiano raved about his defense and special teams. It was very clear that Schiano is completely jazzed about what the future holds on the defensive side of the ball.
Special teams were excellent in “all six phases” in Dave Wannstedt’s debut as coordinator, Schiano said. And Joe agrees. Wannstedt had his unit ready and prepared in hostile territory, and the punting and kicking was standout. Eric Page also did some good things in the return game.

Agree with you Joe. My other gripe is the always being renovated Bucs Fan Forum on their home website. Says coming soon for the past three years now.
More talking needs to happen concerning Eric Page. Dude returned very well this weekend

The best marketing is winning games. If you can’t do that nothing else matters. I dont want to hear them on shows or see them on TV telling us what they are going to do. Only thing I want to hear is that they are busting there @sses back on the practice field to get better because what we’ve seen the last 5 or 6 weeks is absolute garbage.
September 10th, 2013 at 10:02 am
Why would the Buccaneers promote WDAE shows with the constant bashing by the talking heads (Duemig)? Steve Deumig is individually responsible for the decline in attendance with his constant negativity and bashing of the coaches (Gruden, and Schiano). Tom Jones and Rick Stroud’s morning show shows how you can be constructive in criticism, generate callers, and keep listeners. Their show by far is much better than Duemig’s show, no matter what the ratings, imo.
@Morgan – The Schiano show and the player shows are run and controlled by the Buccaneers Radio Network, often broadcasting live from One Buc. –Joe

Once the offense gets going we can beat anyone. But right now it’s an if not a when
September 10th, 2013 at 10:15 am
No sell-out against the Saints, a division rival in the home opener? How pathetic. Looks like the media has done their part to turn potential fans off. All I can say is,
Welcome to Las VEGAS!!!! BABY!!!
It will happen, it’s just a matter of time now.
September 10th, 2013 at 10:18 am
Lol Everyone needs a dream.
September 10th, 2013 at 10:19 am
Yeah, keep telling yourself that! ^^^^
September 10th, 2013 at 10:24 am
Nope I’ll keep telling you that. Good luck with your dream buddy. I hear your arena league team is nice. You should stick to them since thats probably the closest to any pro team youll get. Lol
September 10th, 2013 at 10:24 am
Gee, what could possibly go wrong with having a pro sports franchise right in Las Vegas amongst all the sports books and the nefarious mobsters who run them?
September 10th, 2013 at 10:26 am
Joe’s passionate about this kind of stuff because Joe wants to see the Bucs thrive
Don’t worry Joe, you’ll be able to keep your blog. You’ll just have to travel to get personal interviews everyday, or move to Vegas. Don’t worry, if that happens, just give me a holler and I’ll have my buddy, who’s the concierge for Harrah’s, to comp you a suite. lol
September 10th, 2013 at 10:31 am
laugh fellas, if things keep going like they are over there. Where the media has become the enemy and the local population doesn’t support, don’t think for one NY second the Glazer’s wouldn’t move if a sweet deal comes along. It may not be Vegas, it could be LA, or anywhere for that matter. You’re already going to lose the Rays.
September 10th, 2013 at 10:33 am
20,000 tickets as of 10 am remain for the home opener against the Saints, I predict by 2017 both the Bucs and Rays will be playing in new cities, if it want for the saints fans buying up tickets, Plant High School would have more fan at their game Friday night lol
September 10th, 2013 at 10:51 am
The marketing department has gone through several changes in recent years. Not sure why the constant changes, other than the Glazers possibly blaming the failure to sell enough tickets on the lack of the marketing departments ability to identify and communicate with fans. A winning football team fixes those issues.
September 10th, 2013 at 10:52 am
The NFL will NEVER allow any team in Vegas. Ever. If you want to troll, at least troll realistic.
September 10th, 2013 at 10:52 am
Since this guy was barely a .500 coach in college, if the losses start to pile up and he doesn’t prepare the team to play, Schiano will lose the locker room quickly. Then he is done as an NFL head coach. With his style he can’t have another losing season.
September 10th, 2013 at 10:58 am
LMFAO Harrahs….I think Joe can find a better place than that dump! How bout Palace Station while your at it?!
Back to the topic….as one poster said, wins is the ultimate marketing tool especially in Trendy Tampa. At this point I would settle with a competitive team against a playoff caliber team like the saints. Sunday cant come fast enough!
September 10th, 2013 at 11:00 am
It’s pretty transparent that JBF and WDAE have a business relationship – and this is one way to bash the Bucs while promoting WDAE at the same time.
September 10th, 2013 at 11:02 am
Joseph mamma…You sir are correct…or mam, either way you are correct.
September 10th, 2013 at 11:02 am
my doesn’t work for anyone else. you have to comprehend what you read to make a comment that makes since
Oil Derrick Brooks — glad you know what the NFL will do, they happen to like money…lots of money.
September 10th, 2013 at 11:02 am
my friend
September 10th, 2013 at 11:03 am
I’m pulling for Couch Fan and SteveK. The sooner Josh Freeman is driven out of town, the deeper the stake is driven into Schiano’s heart. I can’t wait.
September 10th, 2013 at 11:08 am
Anyone who suggests the Bucs will move because of attendance is woefully ignorant of their sweetheart lease and profoundly ignorant of the revenue streams of the NFL which essentially render attendance largely insignificant.
Joe has come to believe the Tampa Bay area has been ahead of the curve and smart (notice the Lightning have never had attendance issues yet hockey on TV is really poor?). Attendance at sporting events has trended down for years. The locals were just smart enough to learn before most that they get a better viewing product at home.
September 10th, 2013 at 11:09 am
There is one word why the NFL will never, ever be in Vegas.
Gambling.
September 10th, 2013 at 11:10 am
Says who? The Bucs do not release this information.
If you are getting this info from Ticketmaster, you are a sap. Sorry.
September 10th, 2013 at 11:15 am
Fix the OL and penalties and we’ll be ok.
September 10th, 2013 at 11:17 am
@Morgan – You’re really putting some misleading stuff out here about Joe. Of course, Joe has a business partnership with WDAE. But Joe didn’t write this post with the slightest thought of that in mind. Keep in mind, Joe himself, didn’t even promote the radio shows in question on this site.
The content of this post is clear and not debatable. The Bucs whiffed on a great marketing opportunity — one that not only could help sell tickets but one that could soothe the fan base. That’s not good for the team.
September 10th, 2013 at 11:17 am
RBellBuc:
One more mention of Vegas in your comments will be your last. Knock off the trolling.
September 10th, 2013 at 11:19 am
Morgan:
You are aware the Bucs (not WDAE) produce these shows, right?
You may continue your conspiracy theories.
September 10th, 2013 at 11:21 am
Is it me or am I starting to notice that this entire organization is a mess from the front office (marketing director fired) right down to the guy who sweeps the locker room (MRSA) infection).
If there is one area where they have depth, it futility.
September 10th, 2013 at 11:30 am
Alright I haven’t been on here since before we lost but can somebody just answer this question. Yes I’m one of those who don’t think it was a penalty on lavonte yeah yeah old news, doesn’t matter whatever. But let’s say. Lavonte hit him and the ball.. Neither were out of bounds yet. Ball pops back on field. Is that not a fumble? They thru the flag before genos foot hit the ground.
September 10th, 2013 at 11:42 am
On the special teams note.. My question is a simple one, Maybe someone can help me. I was wondering is it legal in the NFL to pick up a punt returner and head slam him into the turf??
September 10th, 2013 at 11:57 am
Hawkeye…It was a penalty becasue the runner was headed out of bounds. If he turned and ran along the sideline he is free game. Running out of bounds is kin to a QB sliding, the player is considered giving up so you cannot hit him. It may be silly, but it is the rule. Hence GMC pulling back, and if you see Revis’s look on his face he knew thae flag was coming too. The replays have a great view of his face with a WTF look as David shoves him. Needless to say, the Bucs should have not been in the situation had they been prepared to play an NFL game.
September 10th, 2013 at 12:06 pm
Jbeach,
It is if you are a Jet doing it to a Buc player.
September 10th, 2013 at 12:47 pm
Joe, I suspect marketing didn’t want to invite any more criticism from the fans towards Schiano. Pushing his show on social media would have thrown even more fuel on the fire. Bet they push the Schiano show after the first win.
September 10th, 2013 at 1:28 pm
JBF, with all the issues facing the team right now, I found it odd that you’d attack the marketing department for not promoting WDAE (your business partner) shows – sure, TJ Rives works for the Bucs, but the shows bring listeners to WDAE (your business partner). Transparent. Maybe it’s time to return to PR.com for insight on what’s happening on the field, and not at Clear Channel.
September 10th, 2013 at 2:34 pm
Joe says,
Attendance at sporting events has trended down for years. The locals were just smart enough to learn before most that they get a better viewing product at home.
_____________________________________________________________
Yeah, well enjoy watching your local game from HD illegal internet feeds in the mean time because of your great fanbase and constant blackouts.. Better viewing product ? The only time you get to watch them on your HD TV’s is when they play away. How’s that better? Continue to drop in attendance and see if the NFL doesn’t become concerned. Continue to not spend money on your stadium. The national media has been slamming Tampa for awhile now. Sure other cities are struggling for attendance, like SD, but I only here about Tampa and I live in the west. Keep on thinking you’re untouchable. That’s what Cleveland thought. That’s what LA learned.
Keep slamming your team, when you should be building a fan base.
September 10th, 2013 at 2:39 pm
since this marketing guy is resigning does that mean we can finally stop seeing those GODAWFUL “it’s a bucslife for me” commercials…those make me physically cringe
September 10th, 2013 at 3:21 pm
@MAX
more like “#itsabucsDEATH”
September 10th, 2013 at 4:46 pm
Duemig is slamming the team right now – mostly Schiano. Why should I as a local fan attend the game if their flagship network constantly slams the team – calling the head coach imcompetent.
And next week, the flagship station will wonder why the stadium is half-filled and the team isn’t being supported.
September 11th, 2013 at 5:34 pm
Schiano considered a special teams unit that gave up a 64-yard net punt to be “excellent in all phases”? What the hell is he smoking? We had them at 4th down on their own 16, and we ended up back at our own 20. That was a huge negative.
