Report: Freeman To Request Trade

Boy, this is going to get some run on the NFL morning pregame shows, especially on the Tiffany Network.
Per good guy Jason La Canfora (his wife was run over by a hit-and-run driver yesterday and he will not appear on TV today as a result) of CBS Sports, who is well plugged in with NFL sources, posted a story this morning that strongly suggests not only will Bucs franchise quarterback Josh Freeman request a trade before the trade deadline next month, but that Schiano’s job status is “perilous” and that he is trying to Pearl Harbor Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik.
Furthermore, several executives on other clubs believe Schiano’s refusal to ever really endorse Freeman is an attempt to undermine general manager Mark Dominik, who drafted Freeman in the first round prior to Schiano’s arrival from Rutgers and who has also worked diligently to add talent to that roster in recent years. Many around the league believe Schiano would like to have full roster control as well, viewing Freeman — who threw for over 4,000 yards and nearly 30 touchdowns last year — as a pawn in a would-be power struggle.
Tampa’s drafting of quarterback Mike Glennon in the third round this spring — Glennon is clearly seen as “Schiano’s guy” within the organization — is just another indication that Freeman’s future is elsewhere. In the final year of his rookie deal, with his value being undermined by the head coach, and with the Bucs making no attempts to extend him, a trade request by Freeman is one of few options available to the youngster.
Freeman, it should be noted, was not the problem in Tampa’s woeful Week 1 loss at the Jets. He actually rallied the team to take the lead in the fourth quarter, only for Schiano’s defense to once again display its issues with discipline as Lavonte David’s personal foul allowed the Jets to kick a game-winning field goal with time expiring. Four times last year Freeman rallied the Bucs late, only for that defense to hand the game away. The timing of Schiano’s remarks about the quarterback this week were seen as curious by several rival team officials. Officials perceived the remarks as a diversionary tactic to get the local media writing about the quarterback instead of about another collapse by Schiano’s defense. A defense reinforced this past offseason with the arrival of Pro Bowl corner Darrelle Revis and Pro Bowl safety Dashon Goldson.
Joe has to be honest. This has so many angles — without one quote, mind you — that Joe is hesitant to swallow this whole.
Schiano’s job in on thin ice? Really? That’s news to Joe after Week 1. Maybe if he goes 2-10, Joe could see that. But, geez, it’s Week Two of the season, people.
Schiano is trying to cut Dominik’s legs out from under him? That’s a new one too. From everything Joe has heard, both Dominik and Schiano have a very good working relationship.
As for Freeman requesting a trade, the three teams that La Canfora floated as trade targets are Minnesota, Tennessee and Oakland.
First, Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder has produced better results than Freeman. Has anyone seen Freeman take a snap in a playoff game yet? Second, why would Tennessee and Oakland, especially Oakland, waste draft picks on a guy who is going to be a free agent and they couldn’t necessarily sign him come next spring?
Further, if you are Freeman, the season is hardly over yet. Why bail now? Besides, as long as the Bucs don’t franchise him, he could pick his landing spot next season and have teams bid for his services. Why request a trade where he might be sent to a team/location he loathes when he could choose one in eight months?
There’s just way too much here for Joe to believe that everything is concrete that La Canfora wrote, and Joe likes the guy a lot.

Lets put it this way: I think Management and the coaching staff already know what they have in Freeman. I think Dom knows his job rides on Freemans success. Remember, Dominik made the final choice to draft Mike Glennon. So it’s not JUST Schiano’s pick. I think there is mutual agreement there that Josh Freeman is not the guy and could look to deal him.
Remember, it was Mark Dominik who said we’re going to see a lot more of Glennon come preseason.
People think there reason we kept 3 QBs is because Glennon isn’t ready. I’m starting to put two and two together here. Orlovsky was kept because there could be a good chance Freeman is traded come October.
Honestly, this timeline and chart would not surprise me one bit.

Article seems like put conjecture. Joe has said himself that Schiano is a refreshing straight talker…so they are lying about their relationship? We are trained to be so skeptical these days, but maybe things are warranted. I would fully expect Schiano to say something like, “you know, things are rocky, but were all professionals and are playing towards one goal” but I don’t think he has even indicated that.
Seems like la Canfora is sensationalizing this a bit…

You really want to fire a coach that completely changed the culture of a team full of bad attitudes and bad work habits in one season after 17 games because our pansy ass QB got his feelings hurt when he wasn’t voted as a captain?
The team has turned on Freeman. If he wants to go, he needs to go. Revis, VJax, Goldson, David, McCoy, Clayborn, Martin, Joseph, and almost all of the others have bought into the Schiano system. Should we get rid of them too???

This makes it very hard for me to argue against the Bucs being the laughing stock of the NFL. I live in Eagles country and have to hear about Chip Kelly all the time now. Can’t stand it.
I used to work with a guy who was recruited by and played for Schiano for 4 yrs. When he was announced as the coach, I asked what type of coach he was. I was told, hard headed, micro-manager, and will alienate anyone that may be in his way of what he feels will be successful. This went for players, coaches, and the school staff. I must admit, I was concerned when I heard this, but the first year we needed a new culture. Now it seems all of his comments about Schiano may be bubbling up….

Freeman scored better than the lowly guys: Pondner and Gabbert. So that makes him stud franchise QB?
Also, did you not see the defense basically stare down Freeman in “WTF are you doing” after the first few drives?
The defense was catching so much flack last year from Freeman delusional supporters. But they failed to see Freeman didn’t help them much either turning it over and not getting any first downs.
Freeman has done nothing but put himself in the negative spotlight missing meetings, missing team photo, missed his own camp.

Joe’s got it right. None of the comments from Canfora make sense at this time in the season. We are 0-1, not 0-16 for crying out loud! I think some in the media are upset that Schiano gives them nothing to write about, much like Belichick, and until Schiano wins big time and frequently, they will try to move him along, get him fired, etc. The old ‘you scratch my back, I scratch yours’ mentality which Schiano could care less about.

I’m not going to lie, Josh Freeman could do wonders for the Vikings. With AP in the backfield Josh Freeman can throw those deep balls off the play action and the Vikings have a really good TE in Kyle Rudolph. Vikings also have a pretty good defense that won’t soil his fourth quarter comebacks.

What is different in minnesota than Tampa? Even though Doug Martin isn’t as good as AP, he gets the same treatmant. Why? Because defenses aren’t scared of Josh Freeman, just like they aren’t as of Christian Pondner. Freeman doesn’t have the ability to look defenders off or look at reads 2 and 3. Locks onto one side of the field. It’s pathetic almost lol.
So why would they trade for the exact same QB who’s no threat, with lesser talent at WR than what Tampa has, when Pondner executed well down the stretch to get them to the playoffs?

Ponder is PURE GARBAGE. You guys talk about playoffs as if whatever QB gets there is good, but you’re wrong. Ponder can’t even compare to Freeman, and the Vikings know it too. All they need is a good QB, and they will compete in the NFC North. And I know you think Freeman sucks because he hasn’t taken us to the playoffs, but Freeman IS a good QB. It defies logic as to why the Bucs would have even picked up Goldson and Revis if they thought Freeman could not be fixed.
They might have been pulling a Culverhouse type move, by bringing in 2 big names like Goldson and Revis just to sell tickets though as that could be the only reason why I think that they did it. Freeman getting traded midseason just seems nutty to me though. I think even though Freeman has a lot of haters, he also still has a lot of hopeful supporters that bought season tickets for the whole pie and that might piss some fans off. It’s like paying for a buffet and when you get there one of the main items is not there anymore. That means you did not get what you paid for. I know I bought season tickets for the whole buffet.
Raphael Freeman will go before Schiano you can bet your house on it. If Freeman is supposed to be at a meeting at 6:00 and Freeman shows up at 6:01 you can bet your as* that it won’t fly with a Schiano type coach, even if your last name is Manning.
I’m done in here for the rest of the day, because I’m leaving for the game in 20 minutes. Every analyst on NFL Network picked the Saints to win. NFL fans picked the Saints as well with a 93% vote for the Saints. Let’s hope the NFL loving country is wrong today. Enjoy the game if your there. If your not there, enjoy the game in the AC. Christian Ponder does not have a 4 game run like the one Josh is on (3TDs, 13 turnovers). And the Vikes have Matt Cassel. And the Bucs have no leverage. And Freemans agent knows he has to be traded now because the QB class is rich (Bridgewater, Boyd, Hundley, Manziel, Mariota, Fales, Carr), and Freeman is unlikely to be guaranteed a starting job.

GIven this and Stroud’s article, there has to be something going on behind the scenes. It appears info is leaking out by the drip….God help us if they lose today as the spigot will be wide open and we’ll be hearing all sorts of things.
Curious thing though.. There are a lot of 0-1 teams out there and this is the only team with so many rumors circulating. The info is coming from somewhere and I guess we have to question why are there so many undermining forces at work.
Personally, I don’t care who the QB is as long as they win. The drama surrounding the team although intriguing is counterproductive.

It should be obvious even though this report is crap (Joe is right, there are too many factors that make a trade silly, unless someone is doing a sign and trade) that Freeman has the next 3 games to save his job. 1-3 or 0-4 and I think we’ll see Glennon. After 4 years you know whether you’re keeping the guy. I’m not going anywhere. I’m a fan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, not the Tampa Bay Buccaneers only if Josh Freeman is the guy. I’m so remarkably indifferent to who the starting QB is so long as he wins and produces. Freeman has 4 years that show he does win, and produce…but he also loses and makes costly mistakes. If you put most starting QBs on this team with this talent on offense there wouldn’t be a huge dropoff (likely no dropoff) from Freeman.

@Horice – 11 QBs passed for over 4,000 yards last season so passing for 4,000 yards is hardly an accomplishment to hang your hat on. I don’t know why anyone cares about franchise records. The only thing it shows is how terrible our franchise has been all these years. The guy we’re facing today has passed for over 4,000 yards for the last 7 seasons.
What is concerning about Josh is his decision making and accuracy. Only Sanchez, Luck, and Henne had worse completion percentages than Josh’s 54.8 last year.
I’ll be at the game cheering for Josh Freeman and the ENTIRE TEAM to pull out a win. We can definitely be a playoff team WITH Josh IF he plays consistently and limits turnovers. He’s good enough to win with a great defense and solid run game but let’s not pretend that he’s a great QB.

You people acting like Freeman gets all the blame for everything don’t pay much attention huh? He gets the blame for his terrible finish last year because who else can you blame for back to back 4 INT games (including against the worst defense of all-time), but the defense let him down consistently last year. Last week the defense provides as good as can possibly be asked and Josh cannot do anything. He deserves the blame, not Lavonte who played lights out 99% of the game.
And if Freeman can’t take a little heat, why do we want him? Eli Manning faced adversity, and didn’t cry and complain. So did Drew Brees, who didn’t cry and complain. But Josh wants out now? Sorry, if he’s that mentally weak I don’t want a guy like that anyways.

I hate him as a professional QB. Yes. because he sucks. His record and play on field suggests it. If he goes on to have success somewhere else. Great for him. I want Josh right now. But do I want him next year? At the moment, no he hasn’t shown me he deserves an extension. And if the Bucs don’t plan on offering him one, why not see what you have in Glennon if you get to 0-4, when your season is, at least historically speak, 98% likely over. If they really don’t plan on resigning Freeman, I’d rather go with Glennon because if he sucks, then we’re in position to get one of the top QBs, and if Glennon shows he can be the guy, whats wrong with that?

That is true as evident by the #9 ranked offense last year. But Ponder has a defense which the bucs did not. You can not state one without the other. Also, Ponder only threw 18 tds with 2900 yrds. He started this season with 1 td and 3 picks. Surely Freeman is better and if you do not see that then yes your credibility is crap!!! BTW…..Ponder has not taking a playoff snap either. He was hurt for the playoffs. Credibility?

I’ve been a huge Josh supporter for the last 4 years, but I’m beginning to think that he may need a change of scenery and the Bucs may need a change at QB. With the weapons we have, we just shouldn’t have such an inconsistent signal caller. I don’t think the Bucs trade Freeman unless they get a high pick for him ( and I don’t know who would give it.), but if they did get it, this could be a good learning experience for Glennon.(or the Bucs could try to trade for another guy too…Mallet?) Sad to say, but this has all the signs of a really tough season in Tampa unless we can get our QB situation settled and settled quickly!

Like LaConfora said, the bucs have given up 10 fourth quarter leads since Freeman has been here. Four times he rallied the team late only to have the defense screw up. You add those to his win total and the bucs would have been in the playoffs at least 2 years and Jfree’s leadership is not in question at this point. As many has pointed out, winning cures all warts. 1st of all, let’s pretend there is truth to Freeman wanting traded through “league sources” or whoever, then it would make sense that Schiano is just a power-hungry kind of guy. So, he throws Freeman under the bus & essentially the entire team because they all told us what we think they were really trying to say this week. All that is true? Then I am out because this is all bull & I have better things to do than watch as The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Turn. Unfortunately, nothing surprises me much anymore, so this all could be true in which case, like I said, I do NOT care anymore.
However, there is still a FOOTBALL game to be played today. Football is the only sport I watch anymore. Hey, I got a great idea why don’t they just put Glennon in today to start that way they can lose 56-0, instead of 41-0, like their last meeting. I said it before if Glennon has such a grip on this offense, why the hell isn’t he already starting? If he starts, this season is OVER, guys!
Ok it would not be the 1st time a player and/or coach has not been honest with the media, but this report would definitely make them both outright liars. I’ve read Schiano & teammates defending Freeman & Freeman admitting he felt that the captains deserved to be captains. Freeman is better than Ponder & Glennon put together right now IN THIS OFFENSE, but call me stupid & crazy. I got a feeling the way the media has blown this up that somebody or some people (“league sources”) hates Schiano, Freeman or both, or hates the Bucs in general, which does what? Causes all the fans & “fans” to divide (sounds familiar, like our own country), which is what I refuse to continue to be a part of.

Ponder pick returned for td just raised Freeman value. Hope we get at least 2nd round pick and maybe a conditional 1st round if vikings makes the playoffs or more. They had like 3 picks in first round last year and they can afford to skip 1 year to win now. I was very critical of Freeman and he has its share of problem but Schiano is clearly committed to let the team implode.
When you come out of college without a proven record, you just can’t expect the get all the decisional power in a NFL franchise.

You guys are looking at the forest and all you see is trees. Get beyond playing the dozens and think about what is alleged to have happened. Why is this story leaked 3 hours before game time and Freeman’s agent Eric Burkhardt is refusing to comment on the story? I think it is a pre-emptive strike. What if Freeman has been told that if he struggles he will be benched in favor of Glennon. If that happens, then his agent can say they expected it, hence the call for a trade. If everything is fine and by miracle we win, the they can deny all knowledge or spin it as a misunderstanding. There is something to this report.

Everyone here makes Sully out to be this all world coach. I still think his play calling comes into question as well. Remember, Sully was NOT his first choice.

Freeman wants out because he’s about to be benched and it will cost him millions in free agency. Don’t be shocked if the mole in this entire fiasco is Dominick. There’s definitely a power play in affect as none of Dominicks picks before Schiano arrived have been worth their weight. I also wouldn’t be shocked if Bowers is leaking info to the media since his demotion. Which side do you think Bowers is on, I doubt its Schiano’s. Also, Dominick built this team of dysfunction and the guy should be held responsible for the results. In classic Dominick form, he’s saving face by working the media to create the impression that the Bucs would be a winner if Freeman and Schiano could co-exist.

I’m going to continue to support Freeman as long as he’s our QB. However, I’m not going to sit here and be delusional either. When he stinks, and he does, I call it like I see it. Some Bucs fan here will praise him if he has a good game. We’ve seen 57 starts of Freeman. We know he implodes more times than dominates.
The last time we played the Saints, 4 INTs 41-0 route.

Josh has only been pampered his entire career and as soon as things get hot he bails. Raheem was his buddy from college, then his coach in the pros. Just over this guy, move on already. This is dragging the entire team down. The more and more I hear the more and more I think he is a cancer.

Just thinking out loud…NE and the Redskins like our players….I’d def take a Ryan Mallet or Kirk Cousins…..but NE doesnt have another bu qb….Redskins has 3, and Im sure they want to keep Kirk in case RG3 goes down again.

Maybe just trade him for some picks to move as close to the 1st pick of the draft. We could start playing Glennon (I know, he needs a lot of work). But if Freeman really doesnt want to be here, then why trust him with the ball? Id rather trust someone who DOES want to be here. Plus, you never know…Glennon could develop into something..he is a rookie, so at least he has that going for him…..understandable if he screws up and then we’ll try to draft a QB in 2014.

Does the defense play bad, yes. But that doesn’t excuse Josh Freeman’s play. Freeman lacks poise, confidence, decision making, ability to read defenses, locks onto WRs, poor footwork, inconsistency drives you insane.
Care to comment on that Raphael? Care to comment how he was the 4th wrost QB out of 32 last week? Care to wonder how PFF ranked him as one of the worst QBs in 2012? How he balled out in 6 of the 16 games, but sucked in the other 10? Care to explain to me how other teams, overcome bad defensive performances and still find themselves winning 10+ games a year?
Come on Raphael, I want some hard nosed facts to EXCUSE Freeman’s play. Look at TOP. We lost that by almost 6 minutes. Which is a TD drive. That means our offense isn’t sustaining drives.
We had more firepower on offense than the Jets. Why couldnt we move the chains?

It really sickens me that so many fans think this whole situation is funny, hence all the lol’s and crap. Some people would rather be right versus having the team win. They are cheering for an implosion and having the guy they hate get the boot, so they can shove it down their JBF rival’s throat. Losing Freeman is going to absolutely kill any possible good season we could have. Losing Schiano will be very difficult to recover from as well.
Some people are so blind with their love, and others are so blind with their hate. In my opinion, both Schiano and Freeman are to blame. They are both acting like children, and it’s embarrassing. I really like Dominik, but he needs to step in and fix this one way or the other. If he doesn’t, then he is going to lose his job too – deservedly so.

If Schiano goes with MG then as a fan I’m fine with that since it’s his neck on the line and not mine. As far as MG struggling it’s expected, he is a rookie. Josh is in his fifth year-4th as a starter, 2nd year in the same system. There are no more excuses for Josh. It’s put up or go away this year. He doesn’t even have to get us to the playoffs. Just show progess and consistency.
Before you say I’m nof a fan. I’m a total homer. Josh was my QB, VJ was one of my WR’s and the bucs were my Defense last year in fantasy football. I was going to draft Dougie but he was selected right before my next pick. Barth was my kicker also.

Schiano also wants to build his team. He was a late hire in 2012, meaning he didnt have an awful lot to choose from in the assistant coaching category. I thin Sully was his 3rd or 4th option. He wanted McNulty. Cards denied. He wanted the Niners secondary coach for defensive coord., San Fransisco denied that as well.

If Freeman’s agent won’t comment, and we know Freeman didn’t because he’s always tight-lipped….who was Jason La Canfora’s source?
I’ll tell you:
National reporter calls local reporter. Asks “What is really going on down there?”
Local reporter thinks “oh, I can generate a source now!”
He goes on to make things up. Later, national reporter says “according to my sources…”
Local reporter can now say “national reporter now reporting…”
And boom, the local reporter has generated a source and a made-up story.
No accountability at all.

People on this site think that I’m supporting Freeman because I have some kind of man crush on him. And don’t get me wrong, I like Freeman, but the reason I support him so much is because we need him to play well, we need him to produce and be that franchise QB. This team has young talent, but a few of our leaders, like V-Jax, Revis, Goldson, Nicks, Penn, and Joseph are all approaching their 30’s. we simply don’t have time to groom a rookie QB, we need to be competing NOW. Our window is not as big as some people like to think it is. Either Freeman steps up, or we find a veteran replacement, because in all honesty, starting over with a rookie is kind of out of the question. Either find a better QB than Freeman, or hit the reset button.

I support Freeman. Heck I’m wearing his jersey right now. I want this team to be a playoff team with him.
But I can’t help it that I see the reality behind it. Freeman isn’t magicially going to improve his flaws what I’ve stated above after 5 years into the nfl and still not improvements in those areas. Those are also flaws he had coming out of college when he was drafted.
I guess you can say this: You can’t coach talent. Freeman has all the phyiscal talent in the world. Big arm, size, strength. But, you can’t fix stupid either. And the mental make up is something Freeman doesn’t have.
Listening to Eric Stukes, our director of Pro scouting. He was the guy who pleaded for Russell Wilson in Seattle. What he said when he evaluated him?
– Intangibles? Great.
– Intellegence? Excellent.
– Leadership? Excellent.
– Accuracy: Great.
– Awareness: Great.
– Arm Strength: Good enough to make all the throws.
Arm strength was the last thing evaluated and is the most overated skill of a QB.

Dallas Game? explain 31% complettion percentage. Explain 43% completion percentage against Philly. TOP was lost in all of them.
Want the Giants game ? The defense forced 3 INTs that led to points. Offense didnt do anything in the 2nd half. Not excusing the defense, but not excusing the offense either.
And I did look at last week. If Jackson isn’t wide open, we don’t convert.
