Peterson: Glennon Telegraphed Pass

Desert Rats corner Patrick Peterson with one of his two picks today.

With the Bucs leading 10-3 late in the fourth quarter star Desert Rats cornerback Patrick Peterson picked off Bucs rookie quarterback Mike Glennon to set up a short touchdown pass from Carson Palmer to Larry Fitzgerald to tie the game at 10-10.

The play was something Peterson said he had been expecting all day and his patience paid off when Glennon gave him his turkey dinner complete with trimmings all on a silver platter, Peterson said.

“I thought we did a great job of not letting them out and defense being smart, keeping our eyes on our keys, making sure we know what routes and things they wanted to do off the things – the way they lined up,” Peterson said.”We saw that route almost every day of the week this week and it finally paid off. The quarterback, he was telegraphing the throw, he was looking at Vincent [Jackson] pretty much the whole time and I undercut the route and made a huge interception for this Arizona Cardinal team to help that momentum shift for us to go out and get the W.

“You work hard, really hard, on that route [on his first interception] all week and it finally paid off. I had my eyes in the backfield for a little bit so I saw the quarterback looking my way. He’s a young quarterback, so he’s going to telegraph his throws and once Vincent [Jackson] made the break, I kind of undercut it and I became the receiver and made a play on the ball. “

Well, that is what happens when you start a rookie quarterback. He does rookie things, makes rookie mistakes.

Look, Joe understands why Bucs commander Greg Schiano benched now defrocked franchise quarterback Josh Freeman. But to overcome the mistakes a rookie like Glennon will make, the offense has to build a buffer, play well enough so they can overcome them.

The Bucs offense did not.

Damn 76 team played as good on offense.

I was really shocked to come on here and see people saying Glennon played well. He was lucky to only have 2 ints and was constantly overthrowing receivers. He pretty much looked like a Freeman clone.

  3. Raphael Says:

Nope ….still don’t understand why Schiano lied to Freeman and everybody else….if you don’t want Freeman trade him back in march …. Orr create this huge mess of a team … Liars are not respected…no wonder Carson Palmer did want to come here and no wonder Bennett could not wait to leave….pathetic !

You said the other day you did not understand the timing of this benching. Now you say this. You know Josh didn’t go to (how do you say) BSPN until after the unprecedented benching. I’m confident had Freeman played today we would have won. The Cards suck and he would’ve scored better than 10 points. Now we are 0-4 and this coach wants us to believe its all under control. Bull. He will lose his locker room.

He’ll, I heard a number of talking heads say that’s WHY the Bucs drafted him, so there’d be less change , if Free went down. Gotta say it ‘be carefull what you wish for!!

  7. snookau Says:

A rookie telegraphing passes is better than a 5th year QB telegraphing passes.

  8. Fritz50 Says:

Sorry, that was ‘spose to be hell

  9. JamesrunningWilder Says:

Our Offensive Line was Horrible today. It couldn’t open holes for Doug Martin and kept giving up Clean Hits on Glennon Throughout the Whole Game. We’re not getting the Return on the Investment in our O-Line.

  10. Joe Says:

You said the other day you did not understand the timing of this benching.

    Two different animals.

The timing was odd. The fact Freeman was benched is hardly a shock.

  11. Fritz50 Says:

Telegraphing a pass is the same, rookie or veteran. Only difference is HOPE, LOL. Hope is useless with this staff. I know I could be wrong, HOPE I’m wrong, just don’t see it , at this point.

  12. MT Tom Says:

Glennon’s game seemed to mirror Freeman’s career with the Bucs. Started out strong and confident. Had some misteps and got cautious. Fell apart miserably approaching the end.

  13. ctord Says:

I still don’t understand that play call. Schiano typically takes the air out of the ball with a win in sight but today he lets a rookie throw on second down against one of the games better corners. This was the time to play field position with an inexperienced quarterback. It is not second guessing. It is just logical. I just don’t understand and I suppose it does not matter if I do.

  14. MR.T Says:

The only way one can with any certainty evaluate Glennon is to see how he progresses over the next several games. If we see steady improvement and we even win a few he may be indeed be the QB for the future but whether he can progress will also depend not only on him but on the OL playing a lot better than they did today both regarding the run and the pass, better receiver play and better coaching/play calling, will that happen, I hope so.

That’s what I saw all day.

  16. ctord Says:

The o line was fine on pass pro. If you are talking about the run, get used to it. They will stack 8 or 9 against Martin and let the rook beat them. 27 rushes 43 yard.

    @JOE

WRONG AGAIN…I dont know what offense you thought you were looking at today but that wasnt what we’ve been running since schiano got here….isnt that odd that all of a sudden were playing a rookie so we throw shorter passes
and passes over the middle which are high % throws versus the low% back should fades and his 50/50 balls. Not saying you dumb the offense down for freeman but it seems to me freeman is the only reason schiano has 7 wins.

Greg Schiano’s words were this is a performance based business and benching freeman was performance based…..regardless of the plays called for glennon he was actually a breath of fresh air and i thought he looked great and made quicker decisions with the ball than freeman ever did

but this isnt about the quarterback position. media loves to say freeman is 1-8 in his last 9 starts but ok well schiano is 0-6 in games decided by a touchdown or less!!! based on performance and his overall record he should be benched lol he wasted the entire offseason playing mind games when freeman could have been traded for a draft pick this offseason and glennon could have had his tight end not a graduate of rutgers.

cocky bastard calling pass plays and making freeman look bad at the end of the game when that would have been the perfect time to run martin, punt and put arizona in bad field position but no he’s trying to say i told you so i told you i was right, they are losing because of the coach…..

every team in the nfl knows their route tree by heart, they know that if they hang until halftime and make adjustments that this coaching staff clearly has no idea of how to go into the locker room and make adjustments….its bad karma

its one thing to bench a guy but its another to try to ruin his career and make him look like a drug addict and like he’s always late…he’s been called a liar more than josh freeman has since he got into the nfl…mind you we need freeman to have some kind of trade value for a draft pick to fool some dumb team like we did with chicago bears twice. just shows you he’s an amateur looking for glory

Fire the staff im tired of watching this crap that they call offense this is ridiculous anyone that scores twice beats us wtf smfh

  21. Bobby Says:

If you watch that first pick by Peterson it really should have never been picked. It wasn’t that bad of a throw but V-Jax made no move one the ball at all. He could have fought for the ball but basically let Peterson take it right out of his hands. Granted…I don’t like Glennon throwing into tight coverage when it’s Patrick Peterson but V-Jax didn’t help Glennon at all on that throw. I don’t know if his ribs were hurting or what but he needs to at least knock the ball down or something.

I thought Glennon had a good first half and a rough second half. Still, I don’t mind that from a rookie in his first game who showed promise as opposed to a 5th year QB who does the same thing.

And what the heck is up with our o-line??? Can we get our money back? Those guys should be charged with theft for taking pay and playing like that. Martin was getting tackled in the backfield all day long and Glennon had people in his grill constantly. I thought this offense was ready to rock and roll but our receivers can’t get open, our O-line can’t block and we have a rookie QB who is going to have a learning curve. If we could just score 20 points we’d probably be 4-0. We struggle to get a TD. Pitiful. Sully was better today but still not good enough. How he ever thought we didn’t need a TE is beyond me. 31 other teams need one but we don’t?? They come in pretty handy for every other team in our division.

Oh well. The good news is that I believe Glennon can be the QB we need if he learns from his mistakes and progresses. He made some great throws in that game. I’m just not convinced our receivers are all that great. Why isn’t Page or Demps in there instead of Ogletree? I predict Sully will be gone at the end of the season. Schiano isn’t going anywhere.

  22. Bobby Says:

    @buc4lyfe …..

Dude….there was no conspiracy with Freeman. It was just time for him to go.

  23. McBuc Says:

I would not call him a freeman clone… Otherwise he would only have thrown 45% of his passes complete. I believe he was well over that mark. Still was better than watching Freeman.

  24. Jerry Says:

Glennon is a rookie QB in his first NFL start. He played pretty well in the first half. He also had no running game and O-line play was bad. It’s hard to get any rhythm when you are constantly facing 2nd and 12 and 3rd and 10.

You really can’t grade Glennon much here. The entire offense has regressed and looks bad.

You Freeman fans need to move on. Regardless if Glennon is better or worse, Freeman’s time was up. NFL QBs in their 5th year do not survive after losing 8 of 9 and consistently under a 50% completion. There is no conspiracy. Watching Freeman over the last year, his accuracy seemed like it was regressing.

  25. D-Rome Says:

You really can’t grade Glennon much here. The entire offense has regressed and looks bad.

Hey, this is a performace based league right? I mean, couldn’t one argue it’s time to sit them all down for the backups? Doug Martin had a poor day through no fault of his own especially when he was facing 8-man fronts all day.

I guess this is how it’s going to go with the MGM here. When Glennon plays poorly (and he did so today) the excuse is going to be “the entire offense regressed and looks bad” but with Freeman it was somehow his fault. Today proved that what the weakness of the team is not Josh Freeman.

  26. MR.T Says:

I think Glennon will do better as time goes on so I’m going to give him some slack and hope the whole offense will get it in gear after the bye. Geno Smith of the Jets had 4 turnovers today, 2 pics and 2 fumbles, so don’t knock Glennon as though he’s the only rookie whose having problems while learning the NFL ropes.

  27. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Bottom line:

If Glennon is going to be the solution for the Bucs QB woes, I hope he starts lighting it up. If not, I would rather we get a good pick in the draft to get our QB. We should have gone after Alex Smith but what’s done is done.

Glennon is the starter now. It was his first nfl start. He can be blamed for those picks. Should never have thrown to Jackson. He went most of the game without doing so. Why he changed is beyond me.

His mistakes hurt and he is partly why the Bucs lost. However, he should also get a pass. This time.

Sully is the one hurting the offense though. He needs to addapt it to the strengths of his players. Martin is not the only one on the field. Heneeds to pass more. I understand not doing so this week though.

  28. White Tiger Says:

If you understand the Freeman benching? Share it – because I think there is one – but it’s not been discussed.

The reality is that Greg Schiano never met a QB he didn’t (eventually) hate.

When he was at Rutgers…he went through SEVEN starting QB’s in 6 years.

Unfortunately, the NFL doesn’t give you the chance to eat your own QB for 6 years straight – see, as Tony Dungy proved – you really do need a QB and an OFFENSE to win in the NFL. In college you can build a strong enough defense to win the Big East – regardless of your starting QB or the issues you have with him.

In the NFL, you find that rare talent and you design your team around him – you find it, you’re good for 10 years. You don’t, you struggle for 10 years…

Guess which path Schiano has us on?

He’s trying to recreate the scenario Tony Dungy couldn’t pull off – there is absolutely no chance a gutless, low-class, no character, defensive minded coach like Schiano can pull off what Tony Dungy could not.

Time to understand your coach is a liability sports writerz of Tampa Bay.

Rats are usually the first to know that the ship is sinking…and they don’t hang around long…

The Schiano era is over, we’re jut waiting to see how long before they cut the body down from the masts…and how many players he forces to walk the plank of his stubborn ineptitude.

The leader shouldn’t sacrifice players to save himself – it’s not only unseemly – it eventually becomes obvious what you’re doing…
