Newcomers Were The Malcontents

September 24th, 2013

The human armoire, Carl Nicks, shared his take on the recent report of Bucs players gathering in training camp to lodge unified complaints toGreg Schiano — about Greg Schiano.

Woody Cummings, of The Tampa Tribune, laid it out yesterday.

Nicks said the group that expressed concern over the nature of the Bucs’ camp workouts was made up entirely of newcomers that were not accustomed to Schiano’s disciplinary style.

“It was some of the guys that came from different teams or were rookies and they just weren’t used to it,” Nicks said. “The guys that were here last year, we’re used to it and to us it wasn’t that difficult.”

Nicks also discussed the nature of a players-only meeting the Bucs held prior to the start of the season, saying it was largely an attempt to get all the players focused on performing as well as possible in the regular season.

As Joe’s written previously, so what if players think they’re being worked too hard and talk about it among themselves to get a message to their boss. Joe watched those 1990s training camp sessions at the University of Tampa. They make what goes on now look like a high school gym class.

Joe’s far more concerned about game-day coaching and lower-tier quarterback play than August adjustment issues.

Can anybody help me out on the timeline here? Wasn’t there a meeting called by Goldson where a list was put together and sent to Schiano from which he met with the team the next day? And wasn’t there a meeting led by Economos right before the start of the regular season? Which meeting is Nicks talking about and which meeting was was the captains vote taken? Help!

  2. joseph mamma Says:

‘Lower-tier quarterback play.’ That about sums up Freeman for you. I concur. You don’t think his erratic cannon doesn’t at least have something to do with the receiver’s drops?

  3. Biff Barker Says:

Ogletree, Carmini, Crabtree, the dear departed Hillis…. cant see it being Leonard, Castillas, Revis or Goldson.
The rooks had no previous exposure to an NFL camp so all they could do is follow the vets lead.
More winning and less whining please.

  4. Biff Barker Says:

J Mama, the loose cannon residing below Free’s shoulder is a factor with the drops? Of course it is! Passes rarely in stride, off target and high too. They are nor expecting any pass to hit them in the hands.

  5. maxx3442 Says:

Hearing all this crap about training camp maybe was too rigid and Schiano’s style, etc…leads me to think that all the old time hardass players from the Chuck Noll, Don Shula et al era HAVE to be shaking their head and not believing the sad state of today’s wealthy and priveleged athlete. They should have a Butkus, Randy White or Jack Lambert type stroll thru the locker room someday and catch anyone whining. BOOM goes the dynamite. Deacon Jones spoke to the team awhile back and was very effective…might be time to revisit that type of motivation and therefore instill some sincere appreciation for what they have.

  6. K_bassuka Says:

Damn, it would’ve been nice if Schiano would’ve taken sometime off and stayed with his dad for at least 2 weeks… On the other hand I continue to say it in order for someone to run a military style type of programs he coach has to be able to walk the walk or have the track record for players to buy into it 100%. You will get those that will go along with the program like Nicks, but there’s no guarantee that they support it 100% like it should be.

  7. Frank Pillow Says:

Agree with the posts above…the real problem is that Schiano has ZERO credibility. ZERO. Sure, he raised Rutgers up to be an average program- an accomplishment considering their history- but in the eyes of NFL players he has done NOTHING in the league and didn’t do enough in college to warrant the blind trust in his system that he expects. Trust that has to be earned, not bestowed. Unlike Coughlin’s 2 Super Bowls and loads of NFL experience before taking over the Jags, Schiano was a DBs coach. Funny, so was Rah.

Where the players didn’t respect Rah, they liked him…here they don’t respect Schiano and they hate him. I think that’s worse.

  8. Buc Neckid Says:

    Carl Nicks = Buccaneer Man

  9. James Says:

Why is a rookie complaining, YOU”RE IN THE NFL!!!

  10. Biff Barker Says:

Maxx, spot on about the old school toughness. May it’s the pussification of modern society, i.e., “everyone gets a trophy for playing” is the root cause.
I remember Bud Grant wouldn’t put heaters on the sidelines when the Vikes played outdoors. Can still see plumes of steam pouring out of Carl Eller’s nostrils. Ah, childhood memories from a different era.

  11. Couch Fan Says:

here they don’t respect Schiano and they hate him. I think that’s worse

    ——————————————-

Please stop talking out your backside. There is NO proof, at all, that anybody “hates” schiano.

  12. Couch Fan Says:

I take that back, nobody besides Makadum@zz or TonyNobrains, whatever name he decides to use for the day.

  13. Biff Barker Says:

So its Schiano and staff dropping passes, jumping offside, lining up incorrectly, running the wrong routes, missing open receivers, kicking wide, blowing coverage and taking stupid personal foul penalties…. shall I go on?
And it’s the FA’s and Rooks are complaining about the preparation methodology?
Sorry Couch, you’re wide right on this take. The coaches had them in the position to be 2-1.

  14. Couch Fan Says:

No no that wasnt me that said that. I was quoting the other person who said they hate Schiano. Lol

  15. Splengo Says:

    Couch Fan,

You’re already on record calling for Schiano’s head as long as Freeman is part of the deal. The word hate does not belong in this discussion and is not in my vocabulary.

But would help your MGM brethren understand the malcontents are not just rookies. It was team captain Dashon that called the meeting and sent the letter to Schiano.

If you need help I have the Alfred Breer link and Goldson’s words where he admitted it, but played down that it was a mutiny.

I know I can count on you to get the truth out.

  16. Couch Fan Says:

Wrong Splengo. Very wrong but feel free to try to twist words around if you like. I will be here to correct you every time.

What I said was I’d be ok with Schiano getting fired as long as Freeman went with him BUT i would rather Schiano stay… It’s ok I can see how you would need to leave that part out to make your statement sound a bit better…

But I’m the one who is untruthful? LMAO… keep it comin buddy

  17. Bullet_Bob Says:

From what I hear his “it’s my way or the highway” approach with nothing in his background to substaniate his demands is a real problem. “I staying with my program” is also a problem. He has lost 8 of the last 9 and isn’t going to change his approach, game planning, anything. It only gets uglier from here.

  18. Splengo Says:

    OK Couch,

I’ll buy your qualified statement, but still damning though. You left out the most important part and that’s letting your followers know the real source of the locker room unrest.

If you choose not to respond, don’t worry the unrest heats up after the Arizona game. See ya around bud.

  19. K_bassuka Says:

    @Biff Barker

“So its Schiano and staff dropping passes, jumping offside, lining up incorrectly, running the wrong routes, missing open receivers, kicking wide, blowing coverage and taking stupid personal foul penalties….”

That’s what the good coaches do, make sure that the players don’t drop passes, jump offside, line up correctly, run the right routes and be on the same page with the QB, the QB hits the target, the K makes it’s reliable, don’t blow coverage and don’t commit personal fouls… I mean are you serious?

I guess that’s the football they teach at Rutgers where all players are born with all those traits and the HC it’s only there to substitute and act like he is a bad@ss…

Real source of the locker room unrest? I have no idea what you are talking about. I left my crystal ball at the 7-11. I’m sure someone picked it up by now. Would you mind enlightening us on “what the real source is”?

I find it interesting that you seem to know this real source when Schiano himself doesn’t even seem to know.

  21. K_bassuka Says:

    @Couch

You have to be able to recognize the Rutgers crowd here, the only interest it’s to support Schiano cause he is the only HC that sings the unknown players from that putrid program. They’re not Bucs fans…

  22. Biff Barker Says:

    K_bassuka, said…

But you missed the part where NFL players, pro’s right?, just cant carry out their assignments.
I’ve worked both for and with Dow Jones corporations as clients, and had practiced disdain for some superiors and charges over the years. I still performed my duties to a professional standard.
It’s life, stop making excuses for shitty play.

  23. K_bassuka Says:

    @Bill Barker

I’m not making excuses. As an American soldier we tried to do our best to be perfect and do everything the way we train to do, but as humans we make mistakes. Now taking that to the NFL, every single player in the NFL makes one or two mistakes per game that’s the nature of the game, even the great ones have their share of dropping the ball moments.

For instance against the Jets the NE receivers couldn’t catch anything, what good coaches do? Fix the problem in a week, and those are young players. We had the same problems for over a year and Schiano can’t fix anything.

And tell me something, when was he last time you heard a player say that Schiano taught him something that made him a better player? And the Rutgers practice squad level players don’t count. That’s what HC supposed to do and Schiano couldn’t do it in college and I will be shocked if he is able to do it in the NFL.

I saw something on Michael Bennett, how he’s already got 2.5 sacks in 3 games and 7 tackles. And his Seahawks are 3-0. Well I did some fckin around on Google, and came up with this GEM of an article from non other than……JoeBucsFan:
    _____________________________________________________________

Bennett explained why he’s skeptical of New Schiano Order tactics and said he doesn’t believe it’s an ideal method for grown men

“The coaches are very different. You know, Coach Schiano is more hard-nosed, military-type guy. And Coach Carroll is so laid back, it gives the guys chances to not be on their back but still coach them at the same time,” Bennett said. “Because I think a lot of players, they’re adults, too, and when you treat them like kids they get offended by that. You know what I mean? Because players, you know, they got their mortgages, they got their kids, they got wives, they got family, they got things they can do.

“So they know it’s their job and they know when they make mistakes. But it’s a coach’s job to keep them honest, you know what I mean. But when a coach is just too much on them, I think the players rebel. Because, you know, they’re going to be like, ’Why is he on me like this? It’s my fifth year in the league. I know more than him.’ Guys are just like, you know, it just becomes a big conflict, I think.”

None of this surprises Joe. However, Joe is troubled hearing it come from Bennett, who is a very level-headed guy. Bennett also appeared to be the textbook Buccaneer Man under Schiano. He was hard-working, versatile and he played through an injury and took on a tremendous number of snaps.

Current Buccaneers surely share Bennett’s attitude. But Joe has no problem with that. You don’t have to love your boss. Numerous hard-nosed NFL coaches have achieved greatness, including Tom Coughlin winning two Super Bowls recently. Schiano’s tactics can work. Joe’s more skeptical of Schiano’s ability as a game-day coach. (You can hear the Bennett audio below.)

I think it goes beyond players thinking theyre being worked too hard. Like the Bennett article ^^^^^, it seems like Schiano doesn’t know how to adjust his style of coaching to work with grown adult professional athletes.

Please stop cutting and pasting the Bennett article. It’s annoying and needless. Feel free to reference it with a link in a relevant way.–Joe

I dont see where any “real source of unrest” comes from in that article. Though I am sure one can twist words around to mean anything they want.

You know, here we have an explanation by Nicks and it still isn’t good enough for some people. Why take it from the horses mouth when you can make things up as you go along?

you got it. I just thought I was given the green light after I mentioned it last night:

@Joe, I really want to get this article you wrote circulating. But f I go a little too overboard with it, just let me know or delete it.

It just seems most relevant now…. with the media’s perception of Schiano, and the fans’ difference of opinions on Schiano.

At least here, we get a “level-headed” player’s perspective.

Joe doesn’t delete articles. Share whatever you want. –Joe

    But no worries. I’ll stop.
