“Mark The Tape”
September 5th, 2013Earlier this week, popular sports radio and television personality Adam Schein decided to give his team-by-team predictions for the coming 2013 NFL season.
And while Schein is a big fan of Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik, and loves the order that Bucs commander Greg Schiano has brought to the team, and likes many Bucs players, there is one player that gives Schein pause.
That would be Bucs franchise quarterback Josh Freeman.
Last year in midseason, Schein famously stated he trusted Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder more than Freeman. And sure enough, come December, Freeman melted down whereas Ponder put together two clutch performances against playoff teams, at Houston and against Green Bay, vaulting the Vikings to the postseason while Freeman and the Bucs, once again, watched the playoffs on TV.
Schein strongly inferred that Freeman will keep the Bucs stuck in third place this year. Schein gave his take during “Schein on Sports,” found on the “Mad Dog Radio” channel heard exclusively on SiriusXM Radio.
“The Bucs: A third place team, winning about eight or nine games. I like the direction in Tampa Bay. I like what they did in the offseason. I like what they did with Darrelle Revis who should play this week, Week One against the Jets. I just don’t like their quarterback.
“I think at some point, Mike Glennon — in fact, if you want, mark the tape. I am just throwing that out there, if you want to, go ahead and mark the tape. — Mike Glennon is going to be the starting quarterback at the end of the year. Take that one to the bank.”
Before Joe’s readers spill their coffee on their keyboards and go hating on Schein, notice that Schein, a Mike Glennon Mob member, actually believes the Bucs could have a better record than what Joe predicted (8-8) for the season.
There are just too many questions marks on a team with a tough schedule in a brutal division and conference to believe the Bucs are playoff-bound.
Of course, if Freeman blows up, the playoffs aren’t that much of a pipe dream.
September 5th, 2013 at 9:41 am
Tired of hearing about your 8-8 prediction and those of other media talking heads.
September 5th, 2013 at 9:47 am
I dont care who the QB is. Just someone step up, take the reigns and lead us to the dam playoffs!!!
September 5th, 2013 at 9:50 am
It probably won’t be a good thing if Glennon is the starting QB by the end of the season. Freeman gives the team the best chance for success at this point. He doesn’t have to be spectacular, just consistently good.
September 5th, 2013 at 9:52 am
CouchFan,
Easy to say. Sorry, doesn’t work that way.
September 5th, 2013 at 9:58 am
Another hater for the JFro Mob to ridicule!
September 5th, 2013 at 10:06 am
If a guy with 56 career NFL starts can’t keep his job from a guy with zero NFL starts, then I just have no sympathy. Sorry.
September 5th, 2013 at 10:07 am
Easy to say. Sorry, doesn’t work that way.
——————————————-
Im sorry I didnt know there was a certain way to get to the playoffs….
September 5th, 2013 at 10:07 am
Besides winning that is.
September 5th, 2013 at 10:08 am
Schein seems like a genuinely nice guy, but he’s not particularly bright. Hell, he looks like a bona fide short bus rider in the picture displayed…
Let’s remember that Schein predicted Freeman would win the MVP in 2011 after Josh’s stellar 2010 campaign. Now he’s going to predict Josh, the incumbent starter with a full year of Sully’s offense under his belt, is going to lose the starting job to an average talent in a year that he predicts the Bucs will finish at .500 or above??? It makes zero sense, but hey he can always drop some mindless cliche like “take it to the bank,” and it’ll generate a buzz.
Can’t blame Schein for making that prediction considering Schiano (not Dominik or the Glazers) has basically setup Freeman to fail and obviously doesn’t have a particular affinity for JFro. That said, talent will win out and Josh will rise to the occasion. Have faith my Buccaneer brethren – the Bucs will be a playoff contender to the end and Josh will be a big part of their success.
September 5th, 2013 at 10:10 am
Whether or not Freeman produces is inconsequential.
First, this team lives and dies with the success of Doug Martin. Freeman needs to be more Trent Dilfer and less Brett Favre.
Second, let’s say Freeman is typical Freeman. You can let Freeman walk, and with the weapons on offense, what quarterback wouldn’t be falling over himself to have Martin, Jackson, Williams, 2 Pro Bowl Guards, and a Pro Bowl LT? A decent GM should be able to sell that to an established QB. You can actually let Glennon DEVELOP a la Aaron Rodgers.
September 5th, 2013 at 10:11 am
The only way Glennon gets the start is if Freeman is injured. All Freeman has to do is put up similar stats to last year and we are playoff bound. The defense will be the difference this year…not Freeman. If the pundits don’t see that then they were not watching us play last year.
No one can convince me that with Joseph and Nicks back in the mix, Freeman in his second year of this system, Doug Martin in year 2, the addition of Hillis and Leonard, and adding some receivers like Eric Page and Ogletree along with Tim Wright that we are going to be worse offensively than last year and we were a top 10 offense last year.
On the defensive side of the ball we added Revis and Goldson, Spence and Banks. We have Clayborn back healthy and I still believe Bowers will come back to prove his worth. How does this not improve our defense which was #1 against the run last year? Does anyone really believe that the addition of Revis and Goldson isn’t going to vastly improve our secondary?? I just don’t understand all the doom and gloom. This team as a whole is improved from last year. We were competitive in every game but one last year and I expect us to win the majority of our games this year. I’m still believing playoffs.
September 5th, 2013 at 10:13 am
so does this mean us glennon mob members are NOT morans now that Schein has the same opinion?
WAR GLENNON, GLENNON FOR PRESIDENT!
September 5th, 2013 at 10:17 am
@Adam
“You can actually let Glennon DEVELOP a la Aaron Rodgers.”
Wow, you’re totally right…any QB drafted in the 3rd round that rides the bench for a few years will develop similarly to Aaron Rodgers. I’m glad you’ve uncovered this little known NFL secret….All it takes is three years of film study, binder carrying, and ass pats. I’m so glad we’ve got a future MVP and Super Bowl Champ backing up Freeman.
Let’s see – You’re right that Doug Martin, VJax, and Mike Will are all FANTASTIC weapons…
The O line is another story…superlatives like PRO BOWLER don’t mean much when two of said pro bowlers are hobbled by horrific injuries and the other (Donny Penn) has been a shell of himself since his pro bowl campaign. The O line is sadly not a strength – Joe has known this for some time, but he refuses to fully acknowledge it because it conflicts with his pro Bob Bostad and anti Freeman narrative.
September 5th, 2013 at 10:18 am
Third place is fair. No one is going to say we will be better than the Aint’s or Dixie chicks. I get it. I don’t agree with it, but I get it. Freeman and the gang will just have to prove everyone wrong. I for one, think he will.
September 5th, 2013 at 10:20 am
Mark the tape …… Marked
Lol
September 5th, 2013 at 10:22 am
Christian Ponder sucks in case anyone forgot. I mean Viking fans would take Favre back right now over Mr. One Hop Pass. Ponder might be clutch, but they should have gone 14-2 with the season AP had last year. Instead they needed every yard he ran for the get embarassed in the playoffs.
September 5th, 2013 at 10:22 am
LMAO @ Anti Freeman
Joe doesnt need me to defend him but I’ll just say this, If you all you want is positive stuff… go watch the care bears.
The reason I love this site is because Joe doesnt cater to anyone or kiss @ss, he tells it how he sees it.
September 5th, 2013 at 10:26 am
@Couch Fan – I’m not looking for sunshine, I’m just pointing out that Joe’s Freeman narrative is negative and that’s completely fine…I still love Joe’s coverage. However, it’s not the unbiased, objective analysis some of his kool-aid drinking readers believe it to be.
September 5th, 2013 at 10:32 am
And I can understand that but coming off a 7-9 season, 2 losing seasons in a row, 4 losing seasons out of the last 5 years… there isn’t a whole lot of positive in that. I dont look at it as negativity as it is constructive criticism, even though I know people hate that phrase. Joe has posted a lot of positive articles, not as many as some would like but again, can’t really expect positive from what has been a bleek situation so far.
September 5th, 2013 at 10:34 am
Mike Glennon or Freeman are not the answer we need better scouting and better QB
September 5th, 2013 at 10:39 am
As long as we all chant my mantra of “Don’t F@(k it up Freeman” before every offensive possession it may be a good year 🙂
September 5th, 2013 at 10:41 am
There has been quite a few positives, clearly not as many as you would like but after a 7-9 season. 2 losing seasons in a row and 4 losing seasons in the last 5 years. There isn’t a lot of positives to be found yet… But regardless of whether its positive or negative… how can you imply his opinion is bias? How can you really say without a shadow of a doubt that he really just doesn’t believe in Freeman?
To me, to dismiss someones opinion because that person doesn’t like it or agree with it, makes them the bias one… and closed minded.
September 5th, 2013 at 10:47 am
I actually think Freeman’s stats will go down, including his interceptions. With an improved defense he won’t have to force it so much. We will rely less on his arm and more on dougies legs.
September 5th, 2013 at 10:58 am
I Agree and thats probably why Schiano and Co. decided to keep all 4 RBs & Lorig. Run them all, pass when needed and count on a good defense showing up and keeping the score relatively close.
September 5th, 2013 at 11:00 am
CouchFan,
You and SteveK are famous for saying that you don’t care who the QB is you just want to get to the playoffs. Every legitimate analyst that questions the Bucs playoff chances questions both Freeman’s consistency and the pass rush. Even your favorite website constantly points out the thin D-Line.
My point is you can’t just wish for a QB savior, you need a complete team on both sides of the ball. Your even-handedness would be more believable if your plea for the playoffs was more evenly balanced.
September 5th, 2013 at 11:01 am
@FR,
I agree I’m definitely not a Freeman believer and I’m skeptic of Glennon.
Whatever the case maybe we simply must have a stellar Freeman season for playoffs. A good Glennon season will not be good enough. The degrees of freedom is completely separate. Today, the expectations are playoffs but if Glennon sees the field the the expectation is all of a sudden competitiveness.
With this roster and payroll that’s a disaster of a season.
September 5th, 2013 at 11:08 am
Lol Schein is dumb as a rock. We’re gonna win 8-9 games, but bench Freeman? How many games into the season? How many games will Glennon win out of those 9? His prediction makes no sense.
September 5th, 2013 at 11:17 am
I agree Walter. The only way we win 8-9 games AND Glennon is the QB at the end of the year is if we lose our first 4 because of Freeman and Glennon goes 8-4 or 9-3. Could it happen? Yes, anything is possible, but not probable. It just doesn’t add up
September 5th, 2013 at 11:26 am
Most people, who I have read when giving their predictions, gives the same reasoning for the prediction of the Bucs remaining mediocre in 2013… Look no further than the QB!
Unfortunately for the Bucs so many see the same issue and are in the same mindset (I just don’t like their quarterback.)… I would not be at all surprised if Good Ole JF doesn’t cost someone {everyone} their job this year…
September 5th, 2013 at 11:27 am
My point is you can’t just wish for a QB savior, you need a complete team on both sides of the ball.
———————————————
I dont understand your point. I dont wish for any savior. I wish for the whole team to get better. Including Freeman, including the D-Line… Do I harp on Freeman? Yes because I realize that a Franchise QB is the easiest way to get to the playoffs…
Do you NOT think Freeman has problems? If you do then obviously you would want Freeman to fix those flaws or get a new QB correct?
It seems to me you just want to believe the best in your QB. And that is fine… but to suggest others “bias” or even lying as you just implying I’m doing…. is just silly.
September 5th, 2013 at 11:27 am
@Bucs4life Donald Penn still plays at a high level what games are you watching….?
September 5th, 2013 at 11:30 am
@Bucs4Life… aka Captain Sarcastic –
Lay out the laundry list of rookie QBs thrown into the fray on BAD teams that got hammered in their first 3 years in the league and NEVER developed? I can name 5 on the Bucs alone. Not to mention Brady Quinn, David Carr, Tim Couch, Akili Smith… Heck, even ALEX SMITH got thrown to the wolves and only JUST started to show his mettle last season.
Look at the QBs who won Super Bowls. How many of them were just thrown into the mix? Aaron Rodgers, Brett Favre, Kurt Warner, Tom Brady, Brad Johnson…. All did sufficient bench time, learning the game and it paid off.
I moved to Tampa in 1980. The Bucs have NEVER actually developed a quarterback BEHIND a veteran. Never. I really think that Josh Freeman would have been a different quarterback if the Bucs would have RE-SIGNED JEFF GARCIA and let Freeman learn from him. Garcia was a mobile quarterback with a good arm and Freeman could have molded his game around him. I remember when Garcia was not resigned, someone offered him a job backing up a rookie and he turned it down. He said that he wanted to START and MENTOR a rookie, but he didn’t want to be a bench guy. Why the Bucs went with Byron Leftwich over Garcia when they wanted Leftwich to do EXACTLY what Garcia WANTED TO DO is beyond me….
… I take that back. It’s NOT beyond me. Mark Dominik WAS the GM and bringing in Leftwich was a STUPID move.
September 5th, 2013 at 11:35 am
Glennon is definitely not the way to the playoffs or even a winning season. Freeman will keep us stuck in the middle of the NFC south and a serviceable qb at best. Freeman is not the answer either. In a more polished, controlled, low key way, we are as lost as the jets. No game on our schedule is a definite win. With freeman under center there will always be doubts.
Just my opinion. ( no bashing please)
September 5th, 2013 at 11:39 am
Glennon??? really?? there is NO way… Freeman is a good young QB, Glennon needs like 2 to 3 years on the bench before he can play… DID YALL SEE HIM AGAINST THE BACK UPS ON THE REDSKINS. COME ON THIS IS CRAZY!!!
September 5th, 2013 at 11:43 am
CouchFan,
Finally the truth. Yes I do believe in my QB. If and when we do get another one, I’ll support him too.
How silly of me to think you might be biased. This loyalty thing is tough sledding.
September 5th, 2013 at 11:48 am
Lol who would I be bias against him for? We have nobody else on the roster that has proven to be better. If I have sounded bias, that isnt my intention. I just want our team in the playoffs… so I put my opinion out there on how we should do that. Instead of just hoping for the best.
Only loyalty I have is to the Bucs, not specific players.
September 5th, 2013 at 11:55 am
4000+ yards. More TDs than all but six quarterbacks. Yes, please, let’s replace this bum with a third round pick as soon as possible. I like that second worst pass defense in NFL history is guaranteed to improve this season. I mean, it’s almost an after thought in comparison to a QB that, overall, had a very good year. I just don’t get the logic here. It’s as if our defense didn’t lose several games last year.
How many games did we lose by more than one score? The answer is two. And I promise it was not the defense that kept us in most games. It was the offense led by the QB everyone loves to hate.
3 days…
September 5th, 2013 at 11:57 am
“Only loyalty I have is to the Bucs, not specific players.”
A’frickinMen!! And not every person who posts on here can say the same.
September 5th, 2013 at 12:11 pm
CouchFan,
My last word and I take you at your word that your only desire is to win. We share that desire and I hold no ill opinion of you for expressing that desire.
I know that Freeman is a concern. Muhammad Wilkerson just leaked the Jets defensive plans on ESPN and it concerns me. But right now he’s our best hope and it won’t help if I try to undermine what little confidence he has left.
Have a nice day.
September 5th, 2013 at 12:14 pm
Splengo,
Do you really feel that we, as posters on a message board, are able to undermine a professional athlete’s confidence? Let’s not take ourselves too seriously here.
September 5th, 2013 at 12:16 pm
**** both of you
your an idiot for saying 8-8 and hes an idiot as well
September 5th, 2013 at 12:17 pm
Same ol’ tired argument. Same ol’ stupid, and demeaning comments. Same ol’ shitty Buc fans. Waaaa I wanna winnnnn …. I wanna win now… waaaa … I’m used to getting what I want waaaaa If we don’t win I’m gonna take back my fan membership. waaaaaaa If we don’t win now I’m gonna march on OPB waaaaa ….. fckin sickening.
September 5th, 2013 at 12:27 pm
I just quickly scrolled down to the comment box without reading 1 comment from anyone. Why? Because I’m sure it’s the same old BS that has been going on since oh I don’t know July. People bashing and people defending. Ho Hum don’t you people get tired of debating this Freeman crap? Can’t you just read the article and go ho hum like I just did?
Move along nothing more to see here folks…
September 5th, 2013 at 12:35 pm
Rbell,
I know, right? I mean, can you believe there are actually fans that want the Bucs to go to the playoffs. Geez, the Bucs were there in 2008. More crazy, some fans want the Bucs to win a playoff game. But they did that too – in 2003. It’s only been 10 years. Who cares about winning – at least the Bucs have cool uniforms!
September 5th, 2013 at 12:46 pm
just another drive-by sports analyst. he picks a “controversial” statement to go with, and moves on. its a Shaun King tactic.
our success will depend more on a healthy run game & a solid D, than on Freeman. our DEFENSE needs to be held accountable for last season’s collapse – not Freeman. why cant you Mike Glennon Mobsters pull your head off his jock, and see the big picture?? Ignorant a$$ fans.
September 5th, 2013 at 12:46 pm
Lightningbuc,
My website name is Splengo. That in itself should tell you that nobody is taking themselves seriously. Lol
But I will say that some players read what is written about them, even websites. I offer the Donald Penn retort to PR and his conditioning.
September 5th, 2013 at 12:48 pm
…and Adam Schein is part of the (all together now) Mike Glennon Mob.
September 5th, 2013 at 12:51 pm
….and in walks tonytwocents. My jbf hero. Thanks for playing Tony.
September 5th, 2013 at 1:01 pm
’87 said: “I just quickly scrolled down to the comment box without reading 1 comment from anyone.”
lmao. did the same thing before commenting… but then had to skim through to see some of the dialog. looks like a few Mike Glennon Mobsters are changing their tone to, “I don’t care who’s QB, I just wanna win”. Please..
September 5th, 2013 at 1:04 pm
tonytwocents…I seriously think we need to clone you about 5 times. So people like you can stay on the site at all times while the other tonytwocents can go off and do other things if they choose too. LOL
September 5th, 2013 at 1:04 pm
I’m so tired of the Freeman bashing. He will thrive in his second season under Mike Sullivan’s offense. Take that to the bank.
September 5th, 2013 at 1:27 pm
’87, I just speak from the heart……and my balls. let your balls guide your words people. just speak from your balls…
September 5th, 2013 at 1:42 pm
^^As opposed to from the arse as some posters do.
September 5th, 2013 at 1:44 pm
FREEMAN is the first legitimate quarterback we’ve ever had in tampa looking at our history drafting and trading for qb’s i dont think jeff garcia was any better and he was a veteran that was up and down. If warren sapp says he wished freeman was the qb when he played thats good enough for me. This has always been a defensive town so it just shows people are hacking on freeman because thats what media keeps putting in your head about quarterback league. if we had a defense last year we would have had another 3-4 wins, he is the one that won the game in the last seconds against carolina but there was no bashing after that game hmm. he had fewer collapses than our defense, tom brady, aaron rodgers, luck, RG3, Russell Wilson, their great qb’s but not perfect, everyone qb has up and downs freeman to be honest has had more than most qb’s since he was drafted minus that one magical year he had but we still only won 10 games….Defense matters
September 5th, 2013 at 1:50 pm
Saints defense should be garbage by changing coordinators and have 4-3 players trying to change over to 4-3, if panthers or bucs cant top that team then we can say qb league. but once again why did a hall of fame quarterback in drew brees finish with the same record as a guy on the bubble in josh freeman…hmmm apparently thats a mystery. saints had the worst statistical number in the history of the nfl but had the #2 offense and apparently the only team they could stop on defense was us.
September 5th, 2013 at 2:26 pm
So…the Bucs would have a winning record and STILL replace the starting QB? Riiiiight.
September 5th, 2013 at 2:33 pm
lightningbuc. Way to take what he said and turn it into a hyperbole. There is a difference between wanting your team to go the playoffs (which we all do) and getting on a website and pissing and moaning about every single thing that this team does. So yes he is accurate with waaaa waaaa comment.
September 5th, 2013 at 4:23 pm
none of the analysts have the time to watche every team. nobody is gonna watch the bucs when they could watch peyton and brady. nobody but bucs fans and personel realize the talent we have. ive been saying it all summer this team has fewer question marks than anyone in the south. and remember when freeman had his best season? nothing was proven, had no weapons other than a 4th round wideout and bad backfield. no defense to speak of. hes in a contract year, the only other year that he will have to prove himself
September 5th, 2013 at 7:02 pm
Splengo,
I don’t care who is throwing the ball, catching the passes, getting the interceptions, collecting the sacks or throwing the block, I just care about that enough of those things happen throughout the 16 games season.
Maybe the GM needs to answer questions about the D-Line depth. I lost faith in Dom when he signed Haynesworth. That was the straw that broke this camel jockey’s back. There is no excuse for not having a better D-Line at this point in the game.
The same GM, Rock Star Mark, traded up to draft Freeman.
Our best sacker was shown the door, for what?
We need to come out swinging against the Jets. I don’t what our fan base reaction will be if we lose for some stupid, unfathomable reason.
September 5th, 2013 at 7:06 pm
WCBF,
You speak from your arse about Freeman sometimes, it is my sole purpose to present you with an equally alternative mindset.
Both “Good Josh” and “Bad Josh” have shown up, and it all rests on this year.
September 5th, 2013 at 7:09 pm
TonyTwoCents,
Speak from your balls, if you must, just know that mine hang lower and are bigger.
WHO GIVES A DAMN WHO OUR QB IS? PLAYOFFS ARE ALL THAT MATTERS.
September 5th, 2013 at 7:14 pm
If I had to pick one Bucs QB to win a game for me I’m picking Jeff Garcia.
September 5th, 2013 at 9:59 pm
^^Yea OK .. Goodluck with that, the dudes collecting social security.
