“I Think They Are Aghast”
September 26th, 2013Sort of lost in the wake of the benching of franchise quarterback Josh Freeman for rookie third round pick Mike Glennon is that not just Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik signed off on the move. Team Glazer also gave Schiano their blessings.
So who are bitter Freemanites going to blame, the entire organization? From Schiano on up, the Bucs suits, by all accounts, were on the same page.
Still, the Curator of Canton, eye-RAH! Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune, believes the visit by Dominik and Schiano to Team Glazer’s office must have been a stunner for Team Glazer, so Kaufman told the co-hosts of “Movin’ the Chains,” Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio.
“I think they are aghast. I haven’t used that word in about five years and I bet Pat you haven’t heard that word used on your show in about five years,” Kaufman said. “These guys used the words “franchise quarterback” repeatedly over the years. And I am not going to be a hypocrite. I have to be honest. After 2010, I thought he was going to be the next great young quarterback. With a team, guys, that was a lot less talented than this one. A lot less talented. They haven’t done a great job of developing this kid.
“As far as ownership is concerned. I think after Dominik and Schiano got together [Tuesday], I think Schiano did a lot of talking, and Dominik did a lot of listening. They did run it past the Glazers. A move of this magnitude, you have to get them involved. They are not involved on a daily basis but they want to be involved when it is important.
“You know what guys, [Team Glazer] could have stopped it. They could have said, ‘You are not changing quarterbacks.’ And that would have been the way it is. They have seen it as the head coach’s decision. I think you can say this is a Greg Schiano decision. It was certainly not something Mark Dominik wanted to see, his first round draft pick placed to the side.”
For all the hand-wringing and kvetching, it is telling to Joe that, again, every person from Schiano up on the Bucs food chain signed off on the move.
Team Glazer may have been upset. Dominik may have been upset. Hell, Schiano was probably upset about making the move. But no one above Schiano nixed the decision.
September 26th, 2013 at 6:30 am
….and no one below Schiano complained about the decision. Go and sleep in somewhere else JF5.
September 26th, 2013 at 6:41 am
Freeman will get traded and out perform Glennon this season. But Schiano will still get us deep into the playoffs, and maybe win the division. Just watch.
September 26th, 2013 at 6:53 am
Agahst? Please Ira, it’s a business. You have contingency plans in place well before the season even started.
The Glazer’s, Dom and Schiano were prepared for this eventuality long before.
September 26th, 2013 at 6:59 am
The Glazers should have no say in this. Schiano is the coach, and he should have final say. This is Schianos team, not the Glazers. And Dom should be fired all togethr,

My thoughts are that Freeman lost his job when he missed the Freeman Football camp, if ownership was there and had to see bummed out kids faces, How can you put big bucks and a future into a guy that misses his own camp and it was expensive at that 150, May seem minor but I believe set this in motion. This is not a talent issue, its a personal issue and trust issue
September 26th, 2013 at 7:08 am
One thing that can be said now, This IS Schianos team, no doubt with Glennon.
September 26th, 2013 at 7:10 am
What everyone is failing to see is, it’s not a talent issue with Freeman it’s a scheme issue, what this offense requires is a stay at home pocket-passer who makes quick decisions and accurate passes based on pre-snap reads & options, none of which are Freeman’s strengths. Freeman is at his best when he’s on the move, improvising and extending plays, that’s not the offense we run, Freeman needs an offense that will allow his to roll and move, think Jay Cutler. What Schiano and Sullivan want is Eli Manning, but without all the ints…

Dominik is the loan hold over from the Allen/Gru regime and it shows with ALL HIS DRAFT BUSTS! So many busts it screams, “I have no talent or skill in the professional level of scouting!” He is hanging on/is taking partial credit (as GM, only cause he’s in that position) from Schiano’s knowledge of collegiac ties of drafting well. He has only looked improved because of Schiano.
When they cleaned out the front office of Allen & Co., they forget to take Dominik with them.
I thought the continuous years of drafting horribly were over instead Dominik was there to help continue that trend of not knowing what he’s doing when it comes to building through the draft.
Thanks to Schiano, Schiano has been able to get value and contribution from each and every draft pick it’s not even funny. That’s the benefit of have a coach from the collegiac level, they know it and players better than anyone.
September 26th, 2013 at 7:25 am
A meeting of four of the biggest buffoons in the NFL.
Bound to work.
September 26th, 2013 at 7:30 am
Couch Fan,
Turning on Dom? I mean, I’ve never like him, but I know you were somewhat of a fan of his.
September 26th, 2013 at 7:32 am
This team is going nowhere fast.
September 26th, 2013 at 7:34 am
You I sat down and thought about the drafting and talent evaluation under schiano compared to rah and Dom. Since schiano arrived doms drafting suddenly improved.
I think if you give schiano the control full control over his roster and hire a guy to manage the cap, bucs would be a lot better.
September 26th, 2013 at 7:36 am
This is Schiano’s team, period! Not the Glazers team, and Dom is just in the way.
September 26th, 2013 at 7:36 am
If we are not going to win, at least we got some baby-mama drama going to keep it interesting. All we need now id for Dominick to knock up Schiano’s wife… Awesome
September 26th, 2013 at 7:45 am
@lightningbuc
That’s somebody posing as Couch Fan. Ignore him
September 26th, 2013 at 7:45 am
Couch, If Free’s off the field issues were a part of the equation, and there are documented instances of him missing important functions, the ownership needs to step in and protect their brand.

It’s not Schiano vs Morris & Dominick.
It’s Schiano & Dominick vs Morris & Dominick.
The head coach is always given the final say in draft picks. Yes, a GM can try to infuence them, but in the end it is the HCs job on the line more often so he gets the final say.
In regard to free agents, which are roster spots that affect the salary cap to a higher degree, the GM has much more say. Sometimes, owners give a directive to tame a QB in the first round. It happens but it is rare.
In the case of Josh Freeman it did happen. The Glazers made it clear when Dominate ck got the job that they wanted a franchise QB taken in the first round that year. The Bucs knew Sanchez and Stafford would be gone when they picked and so they had to take Freeman. Morris was sold on him anyway.
So blaming Dominic for the drafts is kind of off. If you want to say he had say with Morris, then you have /o accept that he had say with Schiano. But the truth is probably somewhere in the middle as I described above.
September 26th, 2013 at 7:58 am
@Sensible,
what the heck are you talking about?
@lightningbuc.
Freeman was Dom’s number one guy. The guy hasnt given us a winning season since he’s been a GM. Its time for him to go and let Schiano pick guys that fit his system.
September 26th, 2013 at 7:59 am
Gotta love that auto correct.
September 26th, 2013 at 8:05 am
Lol so now we are handing over the entire team to Schiano?? Damn, we’re fu(ked!
September 26th, 2013 at 8:21 am
Why can’t Coach and Dom acutally just agree to this decision? Why do we all just continue to ass-u-me that there is drama. Maybe Glennon is acutally better, let’s just sit back and enjoy the rest of what is still 13 games. Heck only 5 teams in the NFC have a winning record.
September 26th, 2013 at 8:23 am
@CouchFan
The usual “Couch Fan” has a space between the “Couch” and the “Fan” name and I can’t remember him ever getting on Dominick. There was some imposter posting yesterday too.
September 26th, 2013 at 8:24 am
Blame it on dropped passes and scheme all you want, but when you have 4+ years in which you can’t prove to the team you are worth a team giving you another contract, you gotta go. Team has too much talent and sticking with Free is just running in place, goin nowhere!!!
September 26th, 2013 at 8:30 am
Lol what, people on this site think that now that Freeman is benched it’s going to get better?? That’s right, we still have 13 games of torture left, and with each loss, the feeling of “hope” that Glennon is giving you guys is going to fade away fast, and be replaced with a desire to watch Schiano and Dom get run out of town too. Then we can hire a real coach, who actually knows how to develope a Quarterback, not just spit out the company line and act like the team is going to win a Superbowl by doing more push ups than anybody else.
September 26th, 2013 at 8:32 am
Gee Walter, my definition of torture was watching your boy Josh over the last 10 games. Carry on!
September 26th, 2013 at 8:35 am
Don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m excited for Sunday. I was a Freeman supporter, but the tape doesn’t lie. The change had to happen because Freeman was regressing. Can’t do that as a QB in the NFL after 5 years. I’m ready to see what the rookie can do and will support him as he’s a Buc and I’m a Bucs fan. But one telling thing on Freeman is not one player has come out, even anonymously, saying they disagree with the move. Freeman had lost the confidence and support of his teammates and that’s a death knell for a QB.

AGAST = Terrible offensive coordinator
AGAST= Terrible head coach for sticking with offensive coordinator
AGAST = Terrible coaching staff that can not scheme/adjust out of the box
AGAST= Terrible coaching staff that refuses to build around players strengths
AGAST = Too many cooks in the kitchen. Hell of a result for having more coaching staff than any of the other 31 teams.
AGAST = Pissed off Fans
AGAST= Starting rookie QB on a team stacked with pro bowlers
AGAST= Management thinking a few high profile offensive weapons offset a balanced offense. Meaning no Slot Receiver and no Tight End so opposing teams can’t just focus on the obvious 2 weapons.
AGAST= This fan who believes this was inevitable from the debacle of a sloth like coaching search last year. It’s what happens when you “settle” for the dregs.
Agast my ass !
September 26th, 2013 at 8:40 am
@biff barker
Wait til you see Glennon then bro, I’m sure you’ll just love watching it.
September 26th, 2013 at 8:52 am
@Walter,
A rookie making rookie mistakes I can stomach. A 5th year starter making rookie mistakes? Not so much. Please tell me ONE THING that you’ve seen this season that shows you Josh Freeman should be a starting QB for this team. Everyone harps on drops, but when you’re constantly expecting to have to contort to a badly thrown ball the rare accurate pass catches you off guard.
September 26th, 2013 at 8:55 am
@TampaMac
Did I say Freeman should still be starting? No.
I’m just letting you guys know what’s going to happen that way y’all don’t set yourselves up to be disappointed.
It’s rebuilding time in Tampa Bay. AGAIN.
September 26th, 2013 at 9:02 am
Walter,
Anything is better than the Freeman Show. Running in place, was a great way to put it (kudos to whomever typed that).
We were going nowhere. We all wanted Josh to pan out. Hopefully Glennon will.
I am just curious as to why the Freemanites are doubting Glennon, but would routinely fail to see Freeman for the truth.
Go Bucs!
September 26th, 2013 at 9:05 am
@Stevek
I’m part of the Mike Glennon Mob!
The one that’s going to run him out of town when he fails.
Schiano and Dom too.
September 26th, 2013 at 9:27 am
@ BullDog
Were you a supporter of Mike Sullivan last season when we were the hottest offense in the NFL?
People forget around here with Rah that we were losing 42-0 in the mid second quarter of the final game of 2011….
Yeah okay frustrated, I hear you but pissed off? No I use to be pissed off but like you BullDog this roster is talented.
Im sure Schiano wanted Crabtree to be injured.
September 26th, 2013 at 9:27 am
OK so we have imposters in the comment section now. Well as if these comments weren’t childish enough. I’m leaving the comment section. I don’t have time to double check every friging name for authenticity.
Joe, I’ll still read your great articles but the comment section is dead to me

^^^^^ ditto. but I see Sully being thrown out too. even though I’d rather see him as the interim right now. he just seems like a guy who can loosen up the locker room while still having a direction. Schiano’s just too uptight & I dont think our guys are having fun out there.
September 26th, 2013 at 10:05 am
Super , no I wasn’t. Too many points left on the field because of the coaching staffs inability or refusal to adapt and change. Jersey Shore has moved south. Buon Appetito!
September 26th, 2013 at 10:27 am
LMAO Someone is using my name, to funny.
September 26th, 2013 at 10:29 am
Just for the record the REAL Couch Fan is a fan of Doms. Lol
September 26th, 2013 at 10:41 am
Haha I figured that wasn’t you. Unless I missed a post where you endorsed cocaine in the past.
September 26th, 2013 at 10:48 am
Its all gonna be fine.
Guy from Rutgers is HC, never won the conference, barely above 500.
Franchise QB we have been building the team around for five years is abandoned.
Starting a guy at QB who was very shaky in preseason, with no mobility, who has never taken a snap in the NFL. Scouting report says he throws a lot of picks.
Our GM has a winning percentage to rival Matt Millen.
1-8 in last nine.
Oh Happy Days are here again!
September 26th, 2013 at 11:17 am
The Glazers were wise to let Schiano make the change, regardless if the decision is right or wrong. It’s Schiano’s responsibility to put the team in a position to win. If he feels a QB change is needed, the ownership can’t meddle by forcing him to start a QB he doesn’t feel will get the job done. At the end of the day, Schiano’s job is on the line based on results. The training wheels are off.
September 26th, 2013 at 11:21 am
A binch of you are missing the point! How can u make pre snap read and the COACHES don’t gget a play in until 15 sec left on the playclock. U tell me a QB that can get to the line make adjustments, call the play, send your guys in motion, audible if nessasary and read over the defenae all befor getting the the snap off in 14 sec. That rushed your QB. that’s a scheme and coaching mentality issue not freeman fault totally. Holding calls, false start. Illeagal provedure, illegal motion, missed blocks and dropped passes in big situation and dropped TDS. AND ALSO COACHING did I mention that? While Freeman wasn’t playing good it wasn’t horrible amd he’s getting blamed for all these last min losses when he’s not even on the field and when he does make a great read or pass is wrs are not catching the ball. Not gettinf any help will get you bench now? So everyone else isnr accountable for thier mistakes. Only Freeman? Hey. Defense was or poor coaching to allow the other team to het the ball back! You all should really watch rhe game the right way!
September 26th, 2013 at 11:52 am
This article was a waste of space and time! If they watch the games,.. they were thinking the same thing!
September 26th, 2013 at 1:21 pm
Derrick I definitely agree with you lotta blame needs to be on coaching for undisciplined play, and a denial to in game adjustments, but the freeman decision needed to occur as much as I do believe he is a good quarterback who from day one has gotten screwed over in the sense of coaching and turmoil of this rocky last few years this organization has been in (which it deserved through stupid ownership, and management desicions) but again it was time for it to end for free he just didn’t look like he was having fun anymore here I think that all the issues with schiano and his off-field issues he just doesn’t wanna be here anymore so he needed to be benched his play this year looked uninspired and reckless more of some one who is sick if this place and to that I bid goodbye and good luck don’t wanna be here please leave and don’t let the door hit you on the ass as to walk out, with glennon we are done as well he is a developing qb who needs to sit behind an established veteran and learn for 2-3 years then he might be ready but ehhh I’m not impressed and believe he will fail which in result will end the employments of Dom(I actually like him and believe he is good but five years?!?! Time to go), and schiano who is useless as a game coach so new regime a top 3 pick and a new face will be brought with the 3rd pick the bucs select Marcus mariota university of oregan or we could tank for teddy I like that idea more!!!
