Gruden: Glennon Throws With Historic Ease

September 28th, 2013

“Don’t let that pencil neck fool you. This Glennon kid’s got a rocket in that right arm. NASA might have to register that *&^%’n thing. You turn the damn college tape on and he’s Brett Favre with five inches and a brain the size of a basketball.”

Good Ol’ Chucky loves every football player, but Joe’s surely not going to urinate on the words of praise Jon Gruden has for rookie Bucs gunslinger Mike Glennon. Chucky said Glennon may be the smoothest

Chucky spent many hours of film preparation for his annual BSPN special on soon-to-be-drafted quarterbacks, and he recalled recently the ways in which Glennon was elite. NFC South blogger Pat Yasinskas shared yesterday.

“When I worked with Glennon, I told him there are some things he did better than anyone else in college football last year,’’ Gruden said. “Specifically, he can flat-out drive the football. The guy can absolutely hum it. Glennon can throw the ball to the wide side of the field effortlessly. In college, with the wider hashmarks, when you throw the ball to the wide side of the field, it’s a big-time throw. In fact, there are some programs that don’t even attempt it — they don’t even bother asking a QB to attempt a wide-side throw down the field. That’s not the case with Glennon.

“This guy can make some really difficult down-the-field throws. If you watch the camp session with Glennon, you’ll see we went through a “Fox Two XY Hook.” I coached that pattern for 18 years. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a QB at any level throw it with the ease Glennon can. Brett Favre threw a certain second-reaction post, by my count, about four times in his career. I saw Glennon throw it four times last season.”

Chucky picked the Bucs to win the NFC South, and given this scouting on Glennon, perhaps Bucs fans will be uplifted with renewed up of turning an 0-3 start into something special.

Joe wonders how Chucky will eventually scout Josh Freeman for BSPN in some sort of “where-can-Freeman-fit” feature? Ironically, Freeman was dominant in 2010 running Chucky’s playbook under Greg Olson. (Yes, that was Chucky’s playbook. Earnest Graham detailed that to Joe.)

  1. Walter Says:

Chucky loves every QB, but there are honestly good things to like about Mike Glennon.

But there are things to like about every QB. Chucky raved about Freeman too.

  2. Tony Two Cents Says:

    Gruden loves everybody.

    Mrs Gruden: not true.

(sorry Gru. Ive had one too many coffees)

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I live in NC now and have many NC State friends. Every last one of them love Glennon…they say he is a class act..waiting his turn, taking over for Russell Wilson, is very, very smart and and threw the ball great with awful recievers.

They say he is very accurate and gets rid of the ball quickly.
If you’re a Buc fan no matter who you hate….Glazers, Dom, Schiano, Sully, Freeman…..you have to, in your heart, be rooting for Glennon to succeed.

I think the line & recievers will do everything in their power to help Glennon win.

  4. Walter Says:

So now instead of “Hope for Freeman” it’s “Hope for Glennon?”

    Grrrrrrrrrreat.

  5. Bobby Says:

That caption under the photo of Chucky was just too funny!! LOL! I almost spit out my coffee reading it.

  6. RBellBuc Says:

I liken Mike Glennon to a young version of Brad Johnson. Brad was not a scrambler. He stood tall in the pocket, showed great awareness, and could throw a 25 yard frozen rope. Glennon has the same arm but now has to learn to feel the pressure around him and step around it at a whole faster speed than college. Hopefully for our sakes, he’s a savant going forward.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Walter

Hope for Freeman lasted over 4 years….I think we can invest hope for Glennon for 3 hours Sunday….

  8. PRBucFan Says:

    What does Gruden know right?

  9. Tony Two Cents Says:

Joe, a little off topic regarding your advertisiting blogs.

I was thinkin, if you allowed comments on those, you could get some dialog going on some of those ads, or sometimes none at all. And you might get a few trolls, but the more interactive you make it, including the 620 plugs, the more hits and views keep coming back to the ad.

Just a thought. (I gotta million of em! its this blue mountain fresh roast! dont know what those jamacains are putting in my coffee!)

Nice thought. But Joe doesn’t need to babysit comments for a few extra nickels. The discussion of sex acts in the back of Paradise limo, or great oil changes at Ed Morse Auto Plaza, (or negative commentary0 is not worth anyone’s time time. –Joe

  10. Eric Says:

With chucky coaching I could see it. We’d be making a run at NFC south title.

With coach nut case not a chance.

  11. Tony Two Cents Says:

Gruden has to love everyone, who knows where’s gonna coch at next. Dont wanna burn any bridges.

BRING CHUCKY BACK HOME TO OBP!!!

  12. Walter Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan

Oh, I’m investing those three hours regardless of who’s playing QB. I just wish it wasn’t Big Bird taking the snaps. I’d take Palmer over him any day.

  13. Tony Two Cents Says:

    a man can dream Eric…..

Gruden didnt have a chance with our salary cap situation, and he was good with his draft suggestions…(Bruce Allen seems to have been the competent one)

But a Gruden/Dominik alliance, with THIS roster???? …..I think it moved..

  14. Tony Two Cents Says:

*Gruden WASNT good with his draft input….

  15. Harry Says:

Interesting… I had either forgotten or just did not pick up on this sickening fact: Bucs drafted Myron Lewis with the 3rd pic in the 3rd round (of course many of us remember that), but then, 28 picks LATER, the Saints drafted TE Jimmy Graham, damn!

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Walter

I’ll take ‘big bird” that can throw accurately over “Don Juan” who can’t hit a garage door from 20 feet…..

  17. Mike Says:

Yeah but not nearly as much as Glennon. I’m not sold on glennon but as an FSU fan….. He did show me he can get it done with that comeback. I truly do hope the young man shuts everybody up! I hated the freeman pick but it is what it is. If he shows me what I would like 2 see from him then this is just gravy. I will say that I am high on Schiano. He has shown that he does have a plan and it shows on the D

  18. RBellBuc Says:

    @harry

Go look at the pre draft rankings, they had Lewis ranked around twenty spots in front of Graham.

  19. Mike Says:

TBBF, I grew up in WPB, Fl and also reside in NC now. So I know what u mean about the Glennon talk

  20. Lev Says:

I think Glennon will show enough to save Schiano’s job

  21. Bobby Says:

I know one thing….Mike Glennon will be better than Josh Freeman. I went back once again and looked at some of his college tape. The Clemson game
from last year when he puts up 45 points in a loss but what a performance. The thing I love about Glennon is he makes a decision and he makes it quickly. The first open receiver is going to get the ball and if he has any time to throw he is deadly accurate. He can throw on the move too. I’m not predicting Glennon to set the world on fire in his first game but when he gets a handle on the speed of the game and things start to slow down for him I think he will be franchise quality. Any QB who can make the throws he makes with the touch he has…I just don’t see them not being successful at the next level. We have the receivers and I believe Glennon will do a much better job of distributing the ball. He DOES NOT STARE DOWN HIS RECEIVERS. He is excellent at going through his progressions. Check this game out.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uygMU8GbWPE

    He is impressive.

  22. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

I don’t care about the leftover grumblers, I’m excited this week!!

    GO BUCS!

  23. Buc1987 Says:

“He DOES NOT STARE DOWN HIS RECEIVERS. He is excellent at going through his progressions.”

Bobby..I’ve been watching a lot of Glennon highlights too lately, and your right about that.

  24. Walter Says:

    Maybe he’ll be good.

Didn’t impress at all in the pre season against scrubs.

    I doubt he’ll impress now.

  25. Tony Two Cents Says:

I admit, he looked good in those youtube vids. but so did every other college prospect.

But bottom line, I want a win going into the bye. I want our DBs to get nasty again like in the 1st 2 weeks.. they went on hiatus in NE.. Let the Eagles WRs piss themselves for the next two weeks.

  26. Buc1987 Says:

Glennon is going to have a lot of pressure on him though. Coming in at 0-3, not an away game, but if he struggles, I hope the home crowd will have mercy on the kid. I for one won’t boo at all this Sunday. I hope I will be cheering.

The game will be locally televised too. Smart move by the Glazers. I call that a 2 pronged idea by the Glazers. Not only will Buc fans be happy it’s on TV, but it turns the heat up on their coach knowing every Buc fan in the Bay area will be watching.

  27. PRBucFan Says:

Yes, because we’ve seen everything we need to see out of a rookie whilst not even even playing behind a complete first team offense for a few quarters during the preseason of his first season to determine whether he’ll be a failure or not in this league…

RIIIGHT, negative ghost rider. Any Freeman fan would be a hypocrite not to give Glennon ample opportunities. Or was Free the only one that deserved them?

  28. SteveK (MGM) Says:

    Walter,

ALL of your GLENNON and SCIANO DOUBT seeds from FREEMAN’s inadequecies. Your denial for Freeman failing Buc Nation has pushed your feelings to DOUBT the UNKNOWN.

Schiano and Glennon deserve at least the rest of this year to right the ship.

Dominick and Freeman have been together for 5 years, but we are still rebuilding.

I hope Josh gets a chance to go elsewhere and succeed, but he is a BUST in Tampa.

My biggest question for the Freemanites:

Why can the blind faith be applied to Freeman, but automatic doubt for Schiano and Glennon?

Look at Captain Hindsight over here! 30 teams passed over him 3 times in that draft. fucc outta here..

  30. Buc1987 Says:

    “but automatic doubt for Schiano”

Well I’m not a Freemanite anymore since the Saints game. I think the doubt for Schiano has to do with the record of the team dating back to last season. There are few of us, me included that think the NFL has caught up to Sully’s offense and that dates back to last season as well.

  31. Walter Says:

    @Stevek

Oh, they get the rest of the season. I just expect that the results will be so poor that Schiano will be fired.

  32. Tony Two Cents Says:

@SteveK, I cant speak for anyone else, but I dont doubt Glennon. You might see me knockin on his Napoleon Dynamite references, but even Revis jokes about the resemblance.

As for Schiano??? “Automatic Doubt” Schiano’s didnt just come out of nowhere. I’ve seen enough of him after a year and a half to know the guy is a straight up mind game playing, control freak. He’s never won, and he’s more interested in putting in HIS players and HIS friends in coaching spots so they can feed HIS ego while he drives this team into mediocrity for as long as he’s here. And you’re gonna drink his kool aid the whole way.

  33. Deminion Says:

Just want a win Glennon does look impressive in the video I like how he moves in the pocket

  34. Bucfever40 Says:

Why people draw their conclusions on a QB based on looks is beyond me, I mean Big Bird? C’mon, so the guy does not have Tom Brady looks, doesn’t mean that he can’t become a great QB for the Bucs. I think Glennon can be a special QB, it’s true, he had poor wide receivers at NC State, he actually made them look way better than they are, he’s got a quick release, which bodes well for the NFL -as he will avoid many sacks with a fast launcher, along with standing in that pocket until the last second, knowing he’s going to get smashed, shows that he’s a gutsy type player, and lets not forget, he’s as smart as they come. Now I’ve been a Freeman supporter, but I have to concede that he blew his chances here (perhaps literally), but he’s only 25, and if he can get it together, which I believe he will, he’s going to make a huge impact with whoever decides to trade for him, I firmly believe this. But moving forward with Glennon, I think Buc fans will really take to him, as it appears his teammates already have, he’s got better than average skills for the NFL QB, can make all the throws effortlessly (as Gruden says), coupled with a high football IQ, I think Glennon may have backed into the perfect situation, ass backwards! As they say, things happen for a reason, and maybe starting off 0-3 may have been the best thing that could’ve happened in Tampa Bay!

  35. Tony Two Cents Says:

per S. Reynolds (thanks again for that read Patrick):

“In his season-ending press conference last year, Schiano told the media that everyone had to compete for their jobs the next season, including the quarterback, before clarifying that statement over a month later at the NFL Scouting Combine and suggesting that Freeman was his starter.

At Schiano’s direction, the Bucs didn’t sign Freeman to an extension and let him enter a contract year in 2013.

Then the Bucs flirted with Carson Palmer prior to the draft and it gets out into the media.

Then they drafted a quarterback in the third round in Glennon, but Schiano maintains that Freeman is the starter.

Then weeks later on May 19, Schiano said he is “not against” Glennon beating out Freeman as the starter.

Then Schiano clarifies his statement, saying that Freeman is still the starter.

Then Schiano spends most of the preseason playing the backup quarterback, Glennon, rather than preparing Freeman for the regular season and getting the first-team offense in sync. (By the way, Greg, the offense still isn’t in sync nearly two months later.)

No wonder Freeman has had trouble performing.

    It’s called head games…….

Unfortunately, Freeman wasn’t mentally strong enough….”

  36. Tony Two Cents Says:

^^^^^ this sums up my loss of faith in Greg.

  37. Tony Two Cents Says:

Why do you think we “flirted with Carson Palmer”???? Well the guys QB coach out in AZ was none other than JohnRutgers McNulty.

  38. Biff Barker Says:

Too bad Chucky got run out of town by that mean Duemeg guy!

  39. Eric Says:

Whatever chucky was good or not good at, at the end of the game his team had more points a lot more than times that has occured since he was jettisoned.

He could make a run with this team, although he would surely be playing Free.

Coach nut case is gonna be damn lucky to win one game this year.

  40. snookau Says:

Glennon has no pressure actually. Everyone is expecting him to lose.

  41. Tony Two Cents Says:

Kiffin went and announced his move to Tenn in the middle of our playoff run in Grudens last season. That was the main reason our defense quit on Monte, and then our “fans” quit on Gruden.

I was pissed at Kiffin. Not for leaving, but for not keeping it under wraps until the end of the season.

  42. JonBuc Says:

Miss you, Jonny…24-43 since you were shoved out the saloon doors.

  43. Illuminati Says:

After four years in the league, Freeman is still clay to be molded. He has all the physical tools, but he needs to be in the right system, and needs to be surrounded by people who know just how to handle him and coach him up. He can probably still be successful in the right place.

Glennon is more of a self-starter who can improve his own game just by studying his own film. Regardless of how he plays tomorrow or against the Eagles, I think we’ll see steady progression in Glennon’s game as the season goes forward.

  44. rdbucfan Says:

    Walter

“Didn’t impress at all in the pre season against scrubs.”

So Glennon didn’t impress against scrubs playing with scrubs. Most of the players he played with are out of the NFL. We all know that our depth is putrid. Just admit that you hate Glennon because you believed Josh was a franchise QB.

Josh didn’t impress at all in the preseason or regular season playing with pro bowlers.

    There fixed it for you.

Joshstrappers don’t hate them. I just feel sorry for them.

  45. rdbucfan Says:

    Illuminati

Josh doesn’t posses all of the tools. He lacks the most import tool, accuracy.

  46. SteveK (MGM) Says:

    Tony Two Cents,

Prior to the LVD pick (Schiano’s 1st draft), Dom by and large WASTED our 2nd round picks.

  47. Illuminati Says:

    @rdbucfan

    I said “physical” tools.

  48. Tony Two Cents Says:

    “Tony Two Cents,

Prior to the LVD pick (Schiano’s 1st draft), Dom by and large WASTED our 2nd round picks.”

Just look at the core group of talent we have on offense AND defense?? you telling me that Dom didnt build that, is like Obamma telling Bill Gates he didnt Build Microsoft. he didnt build that!

(sorry liberal people. dont mean to get political, but fck politics. fck dems. fck republicans.)

  49. Bucamania Says:

Glennon looks decisive, shows pocket presence, and has a cannon for an arm. We’ll see!

  50. Mike J Says:

Back in April, Greg Cosell had some nice things to say about Glennon. One could surmise Greg didn’t like any QB in the draft class better.FWIW.

  51. Tony Two Cents Says:

    _______________________________________________________________

my bad. Palmer was still with the Raiders during the trade.

  52. zam Says:

really I haven’t seen Glennon being accurate, quite the opposite. I just watched his game on youtube against FSU and it was quite Freeman-esque. Bad things a-comin’…

And since when does Chucky get to have an opinion on training QB’s? Without Rich Gannon or the Bucs legendary defense, he’s a big nobody.

  53. BigMacAttack Says:

Chucky, please come back and coach our team.

Our Head Coach really sucks out loud.

Schiano may call a butt fumble play with 2 minutes to go on 4’th down.
